Book Description

At least one out of four people prefers to avoid the limelight, tends to listen more than they speak, feels alone in large groups, and requires lots of private time to restore their energy. They're introverts, and here is the book to help them boost their confidence while learning strategies for successfully living in an extrovert world.

After dispelling common myths about introverts-they're not necessarily shy, aloof, or antisocial--The Introvert Advantage explains the real issues. Introverts are hardwired from birth to focus inward, so outside stimulation-chitchat, phone calls, parties, office meetings-can easily become "too much."

The Introvert Advantage dispels introverts' belief that something is wrong with them and instead helps them recognize their inner strengths-their analytical skills, ability to think outside the box, and strong powers of concentration. It helps readers understand introversion and shows them how to determine where they fall on the introvert/extrovert continuum. It provides tools to improve relationships with partners, kids, colleagues, and friends, offering dozens of tips, including 10 ways to talk less and communicate more, 8 ways to showcase your abilities at work, how to take a child's temperament temperature, and strategies for socializing. Finally, it shows how to not just survive, but thrive-how to take advantage of the introvert's special qualities to create a life that's just right for the introvert temperament, to discover new ways to expand their energy reserves, and even how, when necessary, to confidently become a temporary extrovert.

Dr. Laney writes an interesting and engaging book; teaches us introverts what we already know, but forgot - and makes us realize that who we are is not only okay, but a gift!

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the topic.......2007-06-29

I am an introvert who, from early childhood, has been surrounded by a Greek chorus incessantly chanting that there was something profoundly wrong with me: "Why don't you talk more? Why aren't you more assertive? Why can't you get in with the other girls? Why are you so shy? You have to overcome this nonsense!" Introversion, in the view of my mother, grandmother, and teachers, was a mental illness, and I got sent to an assortment of psychiatrists and therapists in the hope that I would one day turn into a lively chatterbox, just like my cousins. That never happened. How different everything might have been if they had all read "The Introvert Advantage"! Laney states that introversion is a temperament, something just as inborn as right-handedness. The introversion-extraversion continuum doesn't have anything to do with liking people or even with sociability, but rather how one gets one's energy, either from spending time alone to recharge (introversion) or interacting with others (extraversion). Evidence suggests that there might even be a physiological basis for these differences. If this book stops even one parent from trying to force his or her introverted little one into an extraverted mold, then it has served a great purpose.

All that said, there were some aspects that bothered me. The fluffy-cutesy language (Innie! Outie! Itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny!) has been noted in several other reviews. I suppose Laney used it to make her book seem friendly and accessible, but I found it annoying. Same goes for the rather generic Self-Help section that could have been copied from any number of books (Drink water, sleep more, take breaks during work days...I found myself skipping past it). Also, from a Myers-Briggs/Typology standpoint (upon which Laney briefly touches in the beginning) she seems to use the term "introvert" to refer to an individual with an Introverted-iNtuitive (IN) personality. This is evident in some of her agree-or-disagree statements in the Self-Assesment to determine the degree of one's introversion: "I am creative/imaginative." "If two people have just had a fight, I can feel the tension in the air." Extraverts can be Intuitive as well, and Introverts can be Sensors (the opposite, for lack of a better word, of Intuitives).

But that's all rather advanced material. For a basic, layman-accesible introduction to the topic of introversion, or if you're just an introvert in need of some reassurance, this book is a good place to turn.

1 out of 5 stars Not terribly helpful. .......2007-06-13

"Be more extroverted" is essentially the theme of this text. It's essentially a list of things Introverts are supposed to excel at. In all honesty, speaking to another person provided better results.

3 out of 5 stars It's alright, but dissapointing.......2007-04-20

I randomly picked this book up the other day, not knowing what to expect. I started reading it and was instantly sucked in. It was amazing how well she described myself as introverted, and it was fascinating how she explained how an introverted brain works. And this was only the first couple of chapters!

Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. After a good start is reverts to standard self-help fluff, and like others have said, becomes a little too cute. Worst of all, it suffers from the very problem its trying to address. The book never says just what the advantage of being an introvert is, but instead says repeatedly how I have low energy and get overwhelmed easily. The book treats introversion as a disease, and how to cope.

Not that the book is completely worthless. The beginning is quite good, and there are some good tips and ideas throughout. I'm sure there are worse books out there, but there are probably much better ones too.

5 out of 5 stars NOW I know why..................2007-02-20

Now I know why my boss talks so fast, and why I need to mull something over; why I get my best ideas in the morning shower, and why I prefer a quiet restaurant to a big party-type bar. This book not only confirms that I'm an introvert, but helps me celebrate it. The information (with diagrams) on the physical differences in the way introverts think is amazing and, by itself, worth the price of the book.

    Book Description

The "Innie" and "Outie" Guide to a Great Relationship

We use the words everyday, but what does it really mean to be an "introvert" or an "extrovert?" And what does it mean to be an introvert in a romantic relationship with an extrovert? Can it work? Surprisingly, psychologists tell us that despite their obvious differences, introverts and extroverts can enjoy a strong, stable--and fun--relationship. The key to introvert/extrovert bliss lies in understanding what makes the other person tick and using your differences to help balance and enrich the relationship.

This book offers advice for making it happen:
    · Learn how "innies" and "outies" process information and communicate differently
    · Discover ways to create a fulfilling social life for yourself and your partner
    · Find creative ways to blend decision-making and future-planning styles
    · Get past the dangerous question, "why can't you be more like me?"
    · Turn up the heat in the introvert/extrovert bedroom

The book is based on current scientific research and innie/outie interviews. The book is based upon the authors' personal experiences as a "mixed" couple--introvert Marti Olsen Laney and extrovert Michael Laney have been happily married for more than forty-two years. They must be doing something right!

2 out of 5 stars Same old same old...and targeted at women..........2004-04-19

As a male introvert trying to improve my networking skills, I found this book very disappointing. There is only one, fairly unhelpful, chapter about men near the end of the book.

This book pushed MBTI and it showed some case studies of where introverted women have failed, but it really didn't offer anything on networking that a google search wouldn't turn up.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2003-01-15

This is the only book I have ever returned to Amazon. Take it from an INTJ -- it is totally devoid of useful, substantive suggestions on the claimed subject. It is the same old basic networking suggestions rehashed -- nominally adapted for introverts but as far as I could tell, not in any useful way. Its primary purpose seems to be as a promotional piece for the author's seminars, but given the quality of the book I doubt it will stir up much interest.

For a better read on the subject, try Thomas Murphy's book on selling for introverts or one of the many books on NLP.

2 out of 5 stars What a waste of time.......2003-01-05

Thank god that I only borrowed this book, and didn't have to actually buy the thing. There were a few quizzes, but it was mostly stories and comments on how networking for introverts will be addressed in the book. I made it three-quarters of the way through before I finally gave up. There was no meat to the book. I have gotten more out of magazine articles.

    4 out of 5 stars Hey, I'm not weird!.......2002-12-04

Well, not for being an introvert, anyway... Like Balzano, I'm an officially tested, rather scarce commodity known as an INTP (1% of the population). I've had a lot of problem fitting into the wheeling-dealing crazy world of the extrovert, and networking is something I've looked on with absolute horror, almost like a deer caught in headlights. I'd rather be shot than experience the joy of a company get-together, and I'd far rather clean the toilet and scrub the bathtub than go out with the coworkers for a Friday evening drink.

This book does have some great hints for trying to gradually work your way into the wide world of small-talk, business connections, parties, public speaking, etc. It also pinpointed several problems I'd had over the years with a few of my more extroverted bosses.

It's not a very concrete book, but the hints do come in handy, even if going into a room filled with people fills me with as much joy as a trip to a proctologist. And it is unique, addressing networking from a perspective that only a fellow introvert would think of. Many of the other networking books I've read haven't even attempted to consider the special concerns that an introvert has, and that alone makes it well worth the cover price.

It's very reassuring to know that you're not alone!

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Exercises But A Little Loss Of Focus.......2001-12-20

Why Should Extroverts Make All The Money certainly has its merits. The exercises specifically the one describing problematic bosses are quite helpful. Balzano's basic analysis of introverts as the thinkers behind the organization is pretty accurate. The basic solution to getting introverts to open up is to discover your passion and go about it full blast.

Balzano should discuss more how introverts can overcome their fear of approaching others. Merely comparing it to a less desireable situation does not stand alone as the answer.

Also Balzano needs to realize that there are many people who are part extrovert and part introvert. On the 30 question test to discover if you are an introvert, I answered about 12 as an introvert. So what does that make me? More description is need there.

The analysis on the different types of extroverts and introverts are basically good. However, there are people who do fall in between these categories. A little more detail would ahve been nice.

At times the book loses focus on whether it wants to analyze introverts networking practices or just the general human nature. Each person has their own unique ways and Balzano does pidgeon hole the situation a bit too much. None the less, there are some good ideas.

I really enjoy personality tests...both giving and taking them. I had so much fun taking the 51 tests in this book and evaluating my friends. If you are interested in learning more about yourself or you just want a few evenings of fun...this is the book for you. I think I am going to print some of the tests and use them at my next party.

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2005-12-29

This book was recommended by a friend and I not only found it to be personally helpful, but have incorporated it into our organizational Supervisory Management Program. It is entertaining, but very conducive to learning which is a difficut task with most seasoned managers. This book is well written, has many useful self analysis evaluations that are fun, but will make you stop and think. It is usefull and a very pleasant surprise.

There are just so many things that make you think the Author followed you around, and knows the story of your life. I would recommend this anyone to discover more about themselves. With a title like this, yes, I would want to read it. I'm ashamed of being an introvert. Poor paying jobs where you are shoved into the back of the comapny and forgotten. All the while the extroverts with millions of job choices are making the big money. Friends don't call because you have little to say. People don't remember you when you were with them at an event or party. The title is what I want, but the book behind the cover is seriously lacking the content that I need.

1 out of 5 stars Zebra to Elephant..........2006-07-29

Give me a break! The title is offensive. Who would want to read a book with such a title? Certainly not this introvert. Maybe one of those stripe changing zebras? I'm an introvert, I'll never be an extravert, could never be an extrovert, and would never want to be an extrovert. The author (and his editor) obviously do not understand what an introvert or an extrovert is.

1 out of 5 stars doesn't understand the word "introvert".......2006-07-22

Al Spokoiny may be a shy man turned confident, but he has no idea what it means to be an introvert. If he even thinks that it is possible to stop being an introvert, he probably is not one himself. I am an introvert but I am not shy. And, the truth is, introverts process information differently, it is in their brain's chemistry -- it is not possible to become an extrovert. It may be possible to become more comfortable with people, but a true introvert will always be an introvert. It's not a bad thing.

Meaning of introvert: someone who gets energy from being alone.
Meaning of extrovert: someone who gets energy from being with other people.

Shyness has nothing to do with it. This book will not help our extroverted society to understand the introverted mind.

      Book Description

The contributions of Carl Jung to understanding of the human psyche are immense. Starting as Freud's most famous disciple, Jung soon broke away from his mentor to follow his own lines of investigation and discovery. Many of Jung's ideas are now considered fundamentals in the study of the mind, but other, more controversial theories dealing with the psychological relevance of alchemy, ESP, astrology, and occultism are only now being seriously examined. This condensation and summary of Jung's life and work by two eminent psychology professors is written with deep understanding and extraordinary clarity and, along with its companion volume, A Primer Of Jungian Psychology is essential reading for anyone interested in the hidden depths of the mind.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Jungian Psychology.......2006-11-25

Although it may be rather brief, this book does an excellent job with introducing people to the basics of Jungian psychology. For people beginning to learn about Jung's theories, I think this is one of the best starting points, and after reading it I've had a good basis to continue learning more about this subject. It's well-written, easy to understand, provides real-life examples to clarify concepts, and the information is organized in a logical sequence. Altogether it is a wonderful overview.

3 out of 5 stars Very cursory introduction.......2006-10-27

It's a waste of money. Get it at the library, instead. The informational contents are minimal. The paper is of the lowest quality causing the contrast to be very low and very difficult to read. A much better introduction is "What Jung Really Said" by E.A. Bennet, ISBN: 0805210466.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jung cover.......2003-10-30

Jung builds off many of Freuds concepts, therefore the author Calvin Hall had to, and does have a sense of Freudian psychology. There are also many things that are Jungs own such as ideas about: a collective unconscious, archetypes, dreams and symbols and various personality types. All these things and more covered by Calvin Hall - originating from Carl Gustov Jung. Read it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Jungian Gem.......2003-10-21

This book is absolutly wonderfull; it defines all of Jung's major psychological contributions in layman's terms. A very, "to the point" book with minute, clear examples in each area.

5 out of 5 stars A superb summary of Jungian psychology.......2000-06-26

This is an indispensable book for anyone beginning their studies in Jungian psychology. At 140 pages in length, the text is an easy read with no wasted words and no convoluted passages to unravel. It addresses Jung's entire system and provides succinct, memorable summaries of each concept.

The Book is broken up into seven chapters:
      1. Carl Gustav Jung (biographical background)
      2. The Structure of Personality (the psyche, conscious, personal unconscious and collective unconscious)
      3. The Dynamics of Personality (psychic energy and values, the principles of equivalence and entropy, etc.)
      4. The Development of Personality (individuation, transcendence and integration, etc.)
      5. Psychological Types (thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuitive)
      6. Symbols and Dreams
      7. Jung's Place in Psychology.

For more eminently readable Jungian psychology, try Marie-Louise von Franz.

                Book Description

The Vietnam War has been depicted by every available medium, each presenting a message, an agenda, of what the filmmakers and producers choose to project about America's involvement in Southeast Asia. This collection of essays, most of which are previously unpublished, analyzes the themes, modes, and stylistic strategies seen in a broad range of films and television programs.

From diverse perspectives, the contributors comprehensively examine early documentary and fiction films, postwar films of the 1970s such as The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now, and the reformulated postwar films of the 1980s—Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Born on the Fourth of July. They also address made-for-television movies and serial dramas like China Beach and Tour of Duty. The authors show how the earliest film responses to America's involvement in Vietnam employ myth and metaphor and are at times unable to escape glamorized Hollywood. Later films strive to portray a more realistic Vietnam experience, often creating images that are an attempt to memorialize or to manufacture different kinds of myths. As they consider direct and indirect representations of the war, the contributors also examine the power or powerlessness of individual soldiers, the racial views presented, and inscriptions of gender roles. Also included in this volume is a chapter that discusses teaching Vietnam films and helping students discern and understand film rhetoric, what the movies say, and who they chose to communicate those messages.

Few inventions evoke such nostalgia, such deeply personal and vivid memories as radio—from Amos 'n' Andy and Edward R. Murrow to Wolfman Jack and Howard Stern. Listening In is the first in-depth history of how radio culture and content have kneaded and expanded the American psyche.

But Listening In is more than a history. It is also a reconsideration of what listening to radio has done to American culture in the twentieth century and how it has brought a completely new auditory dimension to our lives. Susan Douglas explores how listening has altered our day-to-day experiences and our own generational identities, cultivating different modes of listening in different eras; how radio has shaped our views of race, gender roles, ethnic barriers, family dynamics, leadership, and the generation gap. With her trademark wit, Douglas has created an eminently readable cultural history of radio.

"Douglas's wonderful book offers a sophisticated history of radio listening." —Journal of American History

5 out of 5 stars Superb social and cultural history of the medium.......2000-06-28

Radio has become such a background part of our lives, we forget just how astounding an impact it has had on our culture and psyche. Susan Douglas brings it all back to the foreground in her book "Listening In." This is not just a chronicle of the development of the media, this book takes us deep into the social impacts of radio, and how it changed how we react and interact with each other. Douglas has perfectly captured the feel and "tone" of different periods of radio listening, and explores a lot of the psychological aspects of how radio let us sample and explore different parts of our American cultue in a safe and nonthreatening way.

As a present-day radio fanatic, the book gave me hope: hope that the medium hasn't been corporatized into complete blandness. Radio will continue to evolve, just like our American culture.

Whether your're a radio technology type, an old time radio fan, or just a student of American history, you'll find something to love in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a history, not just a textbook.......2000-05-05

Please take note that Susan J. Douglas' (Times Books, 1999) is no mere history of radio. It was triggered by a request from the Sloan Foundation that was preparing a series of books on technology and American culture; and the emphasis is not on the details but on the general effect radio has on us from its beginnings. And take another note. This is too enjoyable a read to be considered a textbook.

My favorite chapter was the one called "Radio Comedy and Linguistic Slapstick." Here only a few comics are used as examples to support her several theses, one of which is the emasculation of the American male by the use of such high-pitched speakers as Jack Benny and Joe Penner. Of course there is lots of room for argument, but she does let the facts speak for themselves (pun intended).

The other chapters are "The Zen of Listening," "The Ethereal World," "Exploratory Listening in the 1920s," "Tuning In to Jazz" "The Invention of the Audience," "World War II and the Invention of Broadcast Journalism," "Playing Fields of the Mind," "The Kids Take Over: Transistors, DJs, and Rock 'n' Roll," "The FM Revolution," "Talk Talk," "Why Ham Radio Matters," and "Conclusion: Is Listening Dead?"

Which of us has not been affected in many of the ways Ms. Douglas points out in this book? Therefore, which of us can afford to miss being shown how radio has helped make us what we are? And I do hope she produces a similar book about television.

5 out of 5 stars A great read! "Radio is a sound salvation...".......2000-04-08

I've got Douglas' book today for her take on ham radio (I'm part of the Amateur Radio community) and I was very impressed with the rest of the book. Though I wrinkled my nose at the over-emphasis on the gender conflict in radio, Listening In reminded me of a time when people participate in a common culture instead of idly sitting by listening to the umpteenth Top 40 hit made by over-commercialized "plastic" bands.

The ham radio chapter was simply great and I give Dr. Douglas her due for mentioning the American Radio Relay League as the national association for hams. From this chapter, I can see why hams have a nurturing touch in their approach to life! The section on radio comedy is well done (the comedy bits are good for a chuckle or two). I recommend it to those who have a deep affinity for radio and communications.

It seems you don't have to be American to dream about cowboys. Lucy Rees, a writer from Wales, and her companion Rick, travel all the way to Arizona in order to exercise a rather loopy dream of traveling through the American Southwest on horseback. It becomes apparent from the opening pages of The Maze that this is no ordinary travelogue. To begin, Lucy and Rick's original destination had been Mongolia. Equally extraordinary is their aversion to "betraying" the horses they will live with for several months by leaving them at the end of the trip. Their solution to this problem is to consciously choose delinquent horses, which they hope to rehabilitate and then resell to good homes. What they get are Rosie and Duchess: one a "spoiled brat," the other suspicious of people, "unpredictable, hysterical, and dangerous." Lesser beings might have been daunted at this point, deciding to trade in the horses for an RV, but not Lucy and Rick.

Lucy and Rick's goal is a Hopi mesa where a sevenfold maze similar to ones found in Cornwall, Spain, India, Scotland, Scandinavia, and Crete is carved in a rock. To get there, they must "cross desert, high plateau and half Navajoland, which itself is bigger than Wales." But as all good travel stories prove, the journey is the destination, and long before Lucy and Rick arrive at Hopi, they have learned some valuable lessons about themselves and each other.

5 out of 5 stars Gets You Started Quickly.......2004-11-27

Aimed at the beginning and intermediate user of Microsoft Office for Macintosh, this book is part of the Visual Quickstart Guide. The philosophy of the series is to use a lot of photographs so that you can see what the screen should look like as you do various tasks during the learning process.

The organization of the book, after an introduction that you really should read or at least glance over, is modular just like the software. There's a part on Word, on Excel, on PowerPoint, and on Entourage. Each part is self standing and can be used independently of the other parts. You can read the part on the software you need without having to go do everything at once. Although to be sure you will sooner or later want to use the various applications together, and for this there is Part VI: Combining the Applications.

As a visually oriented book, there are hundreds of pictures/drawings to illustrate just about every point. It's a very fast way to get started.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quick guide to Microsoft Office.......2004-11-15

This 453-page book is written for beginning and intermediate users of Microsoft Office 2004. It blends short, well-written sections on the various parts of Office 2004 with screen shots and other graphics that show you visually how to do things. This is a winning combination and makes learning about Office 2004 easy and fun. I also was pleased to find short "tips" following the various discussions that further enhanced your ability to use the feature being discussed.

Starting the book is a good summary of what's new with the four components of Office 2004, namely Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. This is followed by separate "Parts" for each of these four applications plus an introductory section and a special ending section. The latter contains instruction on combining some of the aspects of the four applications. Within each of the major "Parts" are Chapters of major features each broken down further into short sections focusing on the various useful ways to use various features of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage.

For example, Part II is on Microsoft Word. It is broken down into 6 chapters focusing on working with word, document formatting, text formatting, adding graphics, creating tables, and other word features. Then within each of those are several subsections providing specific help on various aspects of each chapter topic. For instance, within "document formatting" you'll find specific focus on paper size and orientation, margins, headers and footers, page numbers, inserting page breaks, creating multiple sections, and multiple columns. And all are user-friendly and quite helpful!

This book is part of the "Visual Quickstart Guide" series of Peachpit Press, and the again lives up to the other fine visual guides from this company. I was also impressed by the knowledge shared in this book by the skilled author whose past works included more than 50 other books and hundreds of computer-related reviews and articles for various well-known computer magazines. He knows his subject and has the skills to guide the reader to a most satisfying understanding of Office 2004.

All and all, I would highly recommend this helpful book and I'm sure I will be referring to it many times whenever I have a question about Office 2004 - and I have confidence that I'll find the answer!
