when he was introduced at the "stadium." He also had to be the "last" person to enter, and therefore have the most attention, where ever he went too. His brother Dom had more class in his baby finger than Joe. There is no doubt that Joe was a great ball player and very well could be the greatest to ever play the game, but he destroyed, in my opinion his greatness, with his own narcissism. Setting the record strait never does.
Yankee Clipper.......2006-07-30
Very enjoyable book! It's amazing how devoted Morris was to Joe D. What a great friendship they shared. I admired both men in reading about it. And what a pro Joe D. was! I liked how he always insisted on looking his best and would not sign those bats!! He was tough and men today just aren't as strong as the great Dimaggio was! He's such a legend and his 56 game hitting streak amazes me every time I read about it. I can't imagine anyone being good enough to break his record. He was an amazing man and a real class act. Great book!
Enjoyable and Personable Account of Joe DiMaggio's Life.......2006-06-08
Had I read the readers' reviews of this book prior to reading the book itself, I might have passed it up and missed out on an exceptionally well-done, thoughtful and moving account of Joe DiMaggio's life (particurly the later years). Engelberg's biography of Joe is, of course (since he is telling the story of a man he knew intimately and worked with for over 25 years) also a look at the relationship between the two men; Sports Icon and shrewd businessman/lawyer/confidant. Too many of the little details about Joe ring true for me to doubt that the overall tenor of this book is not on the mark. I read this with a dual interest (being a long time Marilyn Monroe fan, as well as a fan of the Yankee Clipper), and the relationship between the two, which Engelberg recounts based on his own conversations and knowledge, rings true. Engelberg makes no attempt to hide his disdain of Joe's brother, Dom, nor of a few other folks that apparently there were conflicts with, particulary concerning memorabilia and what happened to Joe's World Series rings. This is no way detracted from the story itself. Setting the Record Straight takes on the task of doing that, at least from the viewpoint of someone who appears to have been a dear friend of DiMaggio's. While I am sure there are other agendas out there, particularly in the readers review section, those issues are beyond the scope of the book itself.
I found this moving, sad at times, and altogether a sensitive and sympathetic view of Engelberg's hero, who became his friend as well. Other books may be better for biographic details, particularly of Joe D's playing years, but this book makes an effort to maintain the dignity that DiMaggio displayed his entire life, and rebuts and/or clarifies some incidents that were reported in other biographies.
Engelberg and Cramer are both scum.......2005-06-23
After knowing little of the Dimaggio, Cramer, Engelberg situation this book sheds little light on who actually was looking out for Joe. Engelberg portrays himself as a Joe D worshipper in most unbelievable ways. He details how he helped Joe make millions of dollars without any compensation while Joe was alive. Basically the book is Engelberg's long winded attempt to clear his name when, in doing so, the book heightens suspicions of Engelberg. In my humble opinion, Engelberg and Cramer were both out to take advantage of Joe and some claims made in each book are likely valid. I enjoyed reading the book up to 80 pages, after which the book goes on to glorify Engelberg to ad nauseam.
Setting the record straight - Engelberg full of lies.......2005-03-03
Just an FYI - DO NOT buy this book if you are concerned about wasting your money. This book was written for one purpose ONLY - to set the record straight about Mr. Engelberg himself and to make more profit off the DiMaggio name.
Remember, this book was written by the very man who, according to MULTIPLE news reports, literally ripped the World Series ring off of Joe D's finger immediately after the legend himself passed away. To top that off, this same man, who claims to have been Joe's closest "friend" and confidant, has been continuously investigated by the FBI for defrauding Joe during his lifetime, and for defrauding his estate after his death. Don't believe me? Do the research online...
The intentions are not to "set the record straight" but instead to for the author to defend himself against claims made against him (some verifiably true) about HIS true intentions behind his relationship with Joltin' Joe.
The author of this book is in fact the executor of Joe's estate. His sole purpose is to make as much money off of the DiMaggio name as possible. Greedy and dishonest as he is, please don't help add to his fortune by purchasing the book. If you REALLY want to read it, even out of curiousity, buy it off of eBay or find a friend who can lend it to you.
And if you are a true fan of Joltin' Joe, I don't recommend you read the book at all. Misrepresentations and lies about one of baseball's legends are all you will find. Joe himself is tossing in his grave at the thought of this book having been published in the first place!

Book Description
Why do I have to repeat everything? Why does every conversation end in an argument?
Communicating with our children. Conversing. Connecting. When did it become so difficult? And how do we begin to change it for the better?
This book was designed to help parents answer these important questions, and it is based on two fundamental ideas: The first is that there are no bad children, and no deliberately bad parents -- but that sometimes, despite the best of intentions on both sides, there can be bad relationships between parents and children. The second is that, as parents, we must do everything we can to save those relationships, to reach out and really communicate with our children, because it is only through talking to them that we can create an environment for inspiration and change.
In this compelling book, Shmuley Boteach, passionate social commentator and outspoken relationship guru, walks you through the critical conversations, including: cherishing childhood; developing intellectual curiosity; knowing who you are and what you want to become; learning to forgive; realizing the importance of family and tradition; being fearless and courageous. As a father of eight, Rabbi Shmuley speaks from a wealth of experience. He has written a book for parents of children of all ages, from toddlers, who are just beginning to become aware of the world around them, to adolescents, who must learn to navigate all sorts of tricky social and academic pressures.
10 Conversations will help you stay connected to your children so that they develop the kind of strong moral character that leads to rich, meaningful lives.
Customer Reviews:
Good source of inspiration and opportunity for realignment.......2007-08-12
I found this book both inspiring, & easy to follow. This book granted me the opportunity to realign my perspective as parent.. the read offers an array of suggestions on how to bring more fun, values and inspiration into one's home.. A must have for any parent who wishes to grow and grow his or her family in an authentic funfilled way.
Namaste!
Another treasure chest of wisdom.......2007-06-23
I absolutely love rabbi Shmuley's passion for the family, and I have certainly found inspiration from him to be a better parent. This book will give you some power tools in creating what I believe will be a lasting and influential relationship with your children while also instilling strong moral values. I have several good books of Shmuley's, but unlike the others, I have totally marked this one up with notes and highlights. I'll be keeping this book for years to come and I'm certain I will be refering to it often.
Even if you only cover 4 or 5..........2007-06-18
This synthesizes the message that Rabbi Boteach tries to teach his children: "Wherever I go, wherever you go, I'm always with you because my children are always the number one thing in my heart and mind." If you can communicate this to your kids in any of the 10 conversations, then I feel that Rabbi Shmuley would be happy.
Great parenting principles explained well.......2007-05-28
This book is filled with commonsense ideas about parenting and living. It advocates respect, dignity and the importance of becoming a good person. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach gives many great examples of those conversations with his own children (he has A LOT of them) and also writes about the times when he did not follow the advice he is giving. This is an important book to read and reread as the children grow and the application of these conversations change to fit the new stage of the child's life.
Not for everyone, apparently.......2007-03-09
I found this author's Christianity-bashing offensive and his smugness off-putting. I read just the chapters on fear and God and needed to read no farther. His is not a worldview that produces meditations of much value for me. He does not hold even his own views with conviction, emphatically stating that God demands righteousness, but then coaching agnostics and atheists on how they can measure up anyway. Apparently only Christians (and Muslims) are beyond hope. Thankfully, in this country, an author can say whatever she/he wants, but I am sorry our little cash-strapped library spent its precious resources on this book and glad that I did not.

SQL in a Nutshell applies the classic O'Reilly "Nutshell" format to Structured Query Language (SQL), the elegant descriptive language that's used to create and manipulate stores of data. This book explains the purpose and proper syntax of hundreds of SQL statements, as defined in four major SQL implementations, and details each entry with explanatory text and illustrative examples. Perhaps best of all, authors Kevin and Daniel Kline feature MySQL in their coverage, and give it billing that's equal to that of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL. Their inclusion of open-source MySQL, which in most situations carries no license fee, is recognition of its growing popularity and suitability for serious database applications; also, it improves this book's appeal to Unix and Linux developers.
The majority of this slender book comprises eminently useful syntax documentation (which is in the style of Unix man pages, with bracketed options and monospace arguments) and the other information that's specific to individual statements and functions. Additionally, it includes a relatively small amount of conceptual information, such as a section on the proper use of NULL values. The material that's not statement-specific also contrasts data-type implementations of the four covered platforms--for example, readers learn that a PostgreSQL int2 value is known as a smallint in ANSI standard SQL. This is a particularly handy reference book, if you use one of the emphasized SQL implementations. --David Wall
Topics covered: Structured Query Language (SQL), as implemented in Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, as well as in ANSI standard SQL (SQL92 and SQL99). After an introduction to data types and relational database fundamentals (the latter is not emphasized), the authors document SQL statements and functions, one by one and alphabetically. They take care to point out differences among the four implementations.
Book Description
SQL in a Nutshell applies the eminently useful "Nutshell" format to Structured Query Language (SQL), the elegant--but complex--descriptive language that is used to create and manipulate large stores of data. For SQL programmers, analysts, and database administrators, the new second edition of SQL in a Nutshell is the essential date language reference for the world's top SQL database products. SQL in a Nutshell is a lean, focused, and thoroughly comprehensive reference for those who live in a deadline-driven world. This invaluable desktop quick reference drills down and documents every SQL command and how to use it in both commercial (Oracle, DB2, and Microsoft SQL Server) and open source implementations (PostgreSQL, and MySQL). It describes every command and reference and includes the command syntax (by vendor, if the syntax differs across implementations), a clear description, and practical examples that illustrate important concepts and uses. And it also explains how the leading commercial and open sources database product implement SQL. This wealth of information is packed into a succinct, comprehensive, and extraordinarily easy-to-use format that covers the SQL syntax of no less than 4 different databases. When you need fast, accurate, detailed, and up-to-date SQL information, SQL in a Nutshell, Second Edition will be the quick reference you'll reach for every time. SQL in a Nutshell is small enough to keep by your keyboard, and concise (as well as clearly organized) enough that you can look up the syntax you need quickly without having to wade through a lot of useless fluff. You won't want to work on a project involving SQL without it.
Customer Reviews:
An SQL Reference Book.......2006-11-05
This book covers various "flavors" of SQL, but not all of them. This was a "recommended" reference book for a college-level Introduction to SQL course. I will keep the book around as a technical reference even though I discovered it was a lot easier to find PostgreSQL syntax information by typing a command into Google and scanning the results for examples.
Nice Pocket Reference For SQL.......2005-06-10
This is a nice, quick guide for referencing SQL. This book is not a 900 page behemoth to teach you all the ins and outs of SQL setup and performance tweaking, nor is it a 30 page list of commands. Rather, it is a nice "tweener" guide (200+ pages) to get your feet wet and remind you of what commands are and how SQL can be used. 'SQL In A Nutshell' covers SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL, going over the SQL standards that you can expect from these favorite flavors of SQL. Light on examples but heavy on syntax, I feel that this is a nice companion manual to have at your side when you need to remind yourself how a particular command should be written.
If you are a SQL developer could you live without this manual? Yes you probably could live without it, but it's handy to have at your side and I would recommend it.
**** RECOMMENDED
Cross platform syntax reference.......2004-11-07
This is a solid desk reference for SQL syntax which provides invaluable material on the portability of each type of statement. The heart of the book is the four hundred pages of statement reference. Each statement is described with it's syntax and options. Then the support for each database (DB2, MySQL, Oracle, PostgresSQL, and SQL Server) is described in detail. There is a similar 120 page reference on SQL functions.
This is classic O'Reilly. The text is well written, and the book is very dense and well organized. There is a little introductory material but the heart of the book is the statement and function reference. You will get the most out of this book if you already have a reasonable understanding of SQL. This is not a book for beginners.
This would make an ideal desktop reference, particularly for someone working in a cross-platform environment that goes directly to the SQL.
Maintaining several SQL implementations?.......2004-10-29
[A review of the 2nd edition, 2004.]
Perhaps the best virtue of this book is that it spans all the major variants of SQL - db2, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft's SQL Server. The authors are not beholden to any particular vendor. Thus the book describes the common ground. That is, the commands and usage that are most likely to be the same or similar across these implementations. Because a major use of this book might be in migrating. To this end, the more code you can have in this common area, the less painful the migration.
Another possible usage is if you are a DBA in charge of running 2 [or more] of these implementations. Perhaps due to some legacy issues, you have to support them. If you cannot merge SQL code into one common version, you can get problems. Being able to use this book to find quickly common commands and options to those commands might greatly help you maximise a common body of code.
Great reference, but tough to find what you're looking for.......2004-10-15
I have the 2nd Edition, which is 600+ pages.
The amount of information included is incredible. Each description of the individual statements has a "Programming Tips and Gotchas" which can be really helpful. I appreciated the "Rules at a Glance" in each section which give just a quick overview of each statement - the details are described in the section for each database (DB2, Oracle, MySQL, etc).
However, for me personally, the massive amount of quantity also leads to my frustration trying to look up a specific statement. The font is small (or at least appears small) and the text looks crammed together - it's tough to see where one thing starts and another ends. There is a margin indicator marking 400+ pages as the "Statement" section, which is just a big black streak down the edge of the book. I think would have been more helpful had it been alphabetic margin indicator tabs (A, B, C and so on) - this would have made finding statements easier.
So, there's my problem - a great book on content (I wouldn't want to see less), but tough (at least for me) to quickly find what I'm looking for - which is what you want in a desktop reference.
Content = 5 stars
Readability = 3 stars

The second edition of ASP in a Nutshell gives developers of Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) a quick reference guide for looking up object usage on a dime. This guide is geared toward working ASP programmers who need to get their answers quickly, without wading through long examples.
The book is organized into three parts: an introduction to ASP, a language reference, and appendices. This edition has been updated for IIS 5.0 and ASP 3.0--respectively the latest flavors of Microsoft's flagship Web server and scripting engines. The ASP introduction is very brief, but it adequately explains the basic concepts behind ASP and server-side scripting.
The heart of the title is the language reference that covers the intrinsic ASP objects, plus ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) 2.6, Collaboration Data Objects, file access, and more. Each section is tagged with staggered page markers that usually make it unnecessary to resort to the book's index to find a topic.
While there are no full-blown code examples, the small code fragments that are included for most objects are valuable in illustrating usage. Throughout, the information is accurate and to the point, which is exactly what busy programmers really need in a desktop reference. --Stephen W. Plain

Book Description
ASP in a Nutshell provides the high-quality reference documentation that web application developers really need to create effective Active Server Pages. It focuses on how features are used in a real application and highlights little-known or undocumented features. This book also includes an overview of the interaction between the latest release of Internet Information Server (version 5) and ASP 3.0, with an introduction to the IIS object model and the objects it comprises. The examples shown in this section and throughout the book are illustrated in VBScript. The main components of this book are:
- Active Server Pages Introduction. Brief overview of the ASP application paradigm with examples in VBScript. Also included is an introduction to Microsoft's Internet Information Server 5.0, the IIS object model, and the objects that it comprises.
- Object Reference. Each object is discussed in the following manner: descriptions, properties, collections, methods, events, accessory files/required DLLs, and remarks, including real-world uses, tips and tricks, and author's experience (where applicable). The objects--Application, Response, Request, Server, Session, ObjectContext, and ASPError, as well as ASP Directives, Global.ASA, and Server-Side Includes--all follow this paradigm.
- Component Reference. This section follows the same paradigm found in Object Reference. The discussion covers all of the additional components included with IIS, such as ActiveX Data Objects, the Ad Rotator, the Browser capabilities component, the File System Object, and more.
- Appendixes. Gives examples in one or two objects and components using Perl, REXX, and Python in ASP.
Like other books in the "In a Nutshell" series this book offers the facts, including critical background information, in a no-nonsense manner that users will refer to again and again. It is a detailed reference that enables even experienced web developers to advance their ASP applications to new levels.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent ASP reference book.......2005-10-06
This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.
Excellent book!.......2005-05-17
As a student in college, I want to learn some advanced web programming language. I found this book is very helpful for beginner. I also get a discount from couponsky.com when buying this book. This book is not only useful for beginner's studying, you also can take it as reference after you finish the studying. I recommend this book to the beginners in ASP.
Good reference and code samples, but..........2004-05-07
Somewhat in a rush and while trying to learn ASP I purchased this book. I thought it was aweful and it collected dust for nearly 6 months while I searched elsehwere to boot myself up on ASP. However, now that I'm fairly proficient at ASP, this book has been helpful as a reference. No so much for the actual reference value but becasue the sample code helps put things in perspective.
Best book to brush up ASP concepts before moving to ASP.NET.......2003-04-21
I was an ASP programmer several years ago after which I moved to a different technology. Now, I need to come to speed on .NET, but unfortunately all the ASP.NET books make innumerous references to the old ASP which I have almost forgotten.
The book helped me *VERY* quickly go through ASP 3.0 and now I feel very comfortable reading the .NET books and can now truly appreciate ASP.NET.
A GREAT reference book!
Needs a VBScript/JScript book to complement it..........2003-02-20
Be warned, if like I did, you think that this is the only book you'll need to be able to build ASP scripts; you're very much mistaken. Whenever I recommend this book, I always recommend it alongside VBScript in a Nutshell as you really need knowledge of an ASP supported scripting language before you can use ASP in a Nutshell to it's full potential!
This is yet another reference book that I've owned both editions of because I thought it was useful enough to update; but then, my site is developed using ASP, so I'm probably biased in this respect. Ok, so I got the 1st Edition late on in the game and was a little reluctant to part with cash for the new edition - but as IIS 5 started to become standard for Windows hosting, and I had access to it after getting Windows XP Pro... I thought it was about time I updated it.
ASP in a Nutshell is my first point of reference when I'm looking up the properties of a particular ASP object. I've also found it an invaluable guide for connecting and manipulating ASP scripts that used ADO for data storage and manipulation. For a while it was the only book I owned that covered the issue of connecting ASP scripts to databases.
Most of the installable components I'd never heard of before getting the book, just as well really because few are of much use - even if they aren't available on your system, a lot can be easily reproduced. The areas I find myself most frequently refering to are the main set of ASP objects, the FileSystem Object and the ActiveX Data Objects. These go into enough detail to keep all but the experienced programmers happy.
For those new to the Windows scene, there is a brief but detailed guide to setting up ASP to work with your IIS server; but it's hardly rocket science since a clean install of IIS will set up most (if not all) of what you need anyway! If you use ASP regularly, or you intend to, then ASP in a Nutshell should be on your desktop... but please remember it won't fulfill all your ASP development needs without another book to fill in the language gaps. What book you choose to accompany it depends on your language and experience... I personally like VBScript in a Nutshell.
