    Book Description

As a follow-up to his popular book "A Steeler Odyssey", former Pittsburgh Steelers star Andy Russell delves deeper into the world of professional football with "An Odd Steeler's Journey." Russell gives readers a sense for what it is like to be on the field with a championship team and provides an up-close look at several of the unforgettable personalties who have touched his life. He passes on some of the lessons he learned from such mentors as Dan Devine, Chuck Noll and Art Rooney, and the values he attained from Hall of Fame locker mates like Rocky Bleier, Franco Harris, and "Mean Joe" Greene. Russell also tells stories about his ten most memorable games, and the opponents he and the Steelers faced during their storied run to four Super Bowl championships. This book is almost as good as a pair of 50-yard-line seats at Heinz Field.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Captain Andy.......2003-08-19

Andy Russell's journey has been a personal expedition which has lead to a huge life outside of football, but I think readers should also appreciate Andy Russell's journey as a Steeler, and how his environment as a player changed throughout his career. He arrived in Pittsburgh fresh from college, where he had been a star on a National Championship team to a 'backwater' of the NFL, where rookies were given no regard at all. The Steelers were the acknowledged 'dead-end kids', translated into "if you don't shape up we're trading you to the Steelers." The pay was poor, the equipment was used, and rookies had to pick up the rocks off the field so the team could practice. And the Steelers couldn't figure where to play their games, Forbes Field, home of the Pirates, or Pitt Stadium, home of the Univ. of Pittsburg (they used both).

He made the team as a rookie linebacker and started in a season ending game against the NY Giants that put the Steelers where they had never been before--one game away from the NFL Championship. The Giants won. Then Andy rode the Steeler bus on an agonizing downhill journey lasting several years, sticking with it and suffering the indignities of playing on a team going nowhere. No bitching, no requests for a trade. He was tough enough to stay the course and to be there to help build the great championship teams of the 70's. This took the better part of two decades. All that needs to be said is that Andy Russell was the captain of those fabled Steeler teams of the 70's. Teams that rewrote the NFL Hall of Fame and featured people like Jack Ham, Joe Green, Ray Mansfield, Jack Lambert, Lynn Swann, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Mel Blount and others. Andy was their captain. That's enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars A real insight into the NFL.......2002-12-18

Andy Russell gives us a real insight into the NFL and what it takes to be successful and a winner at the highest level of competition. He does this with humour and with stories that illustrate football`s complexity. It is a great read and a must for any fan of the game. You don`t have to be a Steeler fan to enjoy these stories as they give you a rare look into what happens of and off he field.

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up To His First Book.......2002-12-14

This book, while containing stories and episodes of Andy Russell's career as a Pittsburgh Steeler, has lessons on life for all sports fans. Whether in the sports arena, or business world or in life, the message and many of the chapters are about experiencing life events; about perservering when things are darkest; and about the importance of teamwork in or out of sports. I found myself going back and reading some of the chapters over again, not just because of the story, but of the message. Andy has added to his wonderful first book, and hopefully there will be another one in the future. His stature as author is growing.

In this story Theodore the Tugboat rescues a young whale. At first he doesn't like being responsible for the little cetacean, but soon finds himself upset when its pod is found and the youngster's going to leave.

This is a gentle lesson with a beloved cast of characters, though I'd say it's the weakest of the three Theodore books we have read. If you already have other books in the series, this is a fine addition; if you are choosing an introduction to the characters, Theodore's Whistle is a better book.

5 out of 5 stars We think Theodore is TERRIFIC!.......2001-07-14

Theodore Tugboat is one of the best kid story lines that is on the market today! My two year old has the whole set of Theodore tugboat books and we just love all of them, especially this one! My little boy laughs everytime he sees the whale squirting water at the tugboats! The whole idea behind Theodore is wonderful and imaginative! The stories are easy to follow and fun to read for both children and adults! The stories include life lessons and how the tugboats deal with the situation and their feelings. In this story, Theodore finds a lost whale and has to deal with "whale sitting" until the whale is reunited with its family. Theodore learns to say goodbye in this book while making a new friend. It is a great book with a good moral in the end! The story is easy to read alound and the illustrations are vivid and crisp! Plus the whole gang of tugboats are included in the story, which is a plus considering we love to see all the tugboats. I strongly reccommend the whole series of the Theodore Tugboat books to kids of all ages!

How would you like a chance to win $100,000? A lot of people would like this but it's not always as great as you think. The Hostage by Theodore Taylor is a book just about this. It takes place during the 1980's at Lumber Landing, a small fishing town near Vancouver. This story is fiction but it could really happen.

Jamie Tidd is the main character of this story. He is a fourteen year old who is in a fishing camp for the summer with his dad. They live on their boat called the Dawn Girl. They catch fish and take them to market. Jamie and his dad like to fish and get along well. Jamie's best friend is Angie. She works with her dad on another boat. Zach Cooke is a man who works for a Sea World type place that is being built. Doc Greenlee is a man who works for Zach Cooke.

Zack Cooke put out an add for a twenty-five foot killer whale in good condition. The reward is one hundred thousand dollars. He wants it to be an attraction at a new water park. Jamie and his Dad are fishing one day and a killer whale gets into a small cove. They remember the add and trap the whale with nets. They then send out a call to another boat that they know to see if they can buy some fish from them. They get the fish and feed the whale.

Jamie's dad calls Zack Cooke and tells him that they have a whale. Zack Cooke doesn't believe it at first. He sends Doc Greenlee to check out the whale. You will want to find out how this opportunity to make one hundred thousand dollars affects everyone.

There is a lot in this book about being a good friend. The book is also about making important decisions. I recommend this book because it is more than just an animal story.

                  Book Description

In the late 1920s, "streamlined" became the term businessmen used to described new models that were easier to produce as well as those that met with less sales resistance than older products. Illustrating this concept with streamlined objects from soup cans to the Chrysler building, Jeffrey Meikle's classic book, Twentieth Century Limited, celebrates the birth of the industrial design profession from 1925-1939. This second edition includes a new preface and improved photographic reproduction.

Commercial artists who answered the call of business—Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, and Raymond Loewy the best known among them—were pioneers who envisioned a coherent machine-age environment in which life would be clean, efficient, and harmonious. Working with new materials—chrome, stainless steel, Bakelite plastic—they created a streamlined expressionist style which reflected the desire of the Depression-era public for a frictionless, static society.

Appliances such as Loewy's Coldspot refrigerator "set a new standard" (according to the advertisements), and its usefulness extended to the way it improved the middle-class consumer's taste for sleek new products.

Profusely illustrated with 150 photographs, Twentieth Century Limited pays tribute to the industrial designers and the way they transformed American culture; a generation after its initial publication, this book remains the best introduction to the subject. The new edition will fascinate anyone interested in art, architecture, technology, and American culture of the 1930s.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great example of life in the depression years.......2007-03-12

The author does an excellent job of showing how industrial design grew in the United States and diffused throughout the economy. The idea of making products and buildings consumer friendly began growing in the 1920's and hit its peak in the 1930's. The depression spurred a need for consumers to have their preferences swayed by what industrial designers would create. Geddes and others would create a pantheon of designs that revolutionized America. The sky scrappers and offices that would look remarkable were the products of mostly four men (Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, and Raymond Loewy). The pictures in this book do an excellent job of illustrating all the authors' main points and provide a unique insight into an older world. The final part of the book and the best in my opinion is the coverage of the two world fairs. The worlds fairs were a great example of how the country could look forward and embrace consumerism even in the heart of the depression. This is an interesting topic covered very well here. Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for enterprise application........2006-11-08

This book covered material for those people work in enterprise level enviornments who are concern about their servers and wanted to keep their servers running 24X7.

This is a book for those professional want to enhance their professional skills and work in distributed system environment (Clustered Servers).

This book give you a good guidance to design great applications in simple readable manner. It covered areas such as Client Tier, Application Tier, Web Tier, and Data Tier. It shows how the .Net Service inter-related and gives you an overview of the .Net framework architect.

The book give you better understand of where .Net is heading and how to organize your programming structure along with your server configuration etc.,

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners!.......2006-10-05

Actually, this book a great book for beginners.

But, it is a *must* read for Microsoft Solutions Architects and Senior Software Engineers.

However, I recommend that you read Martin Fowler's (et al) book "Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture", before you read this one. And the book "Design Patterns - Elements of Reusable OO Software" before either of the above.

I know, you have to deal with enough dependancies while coding, you don't want someone you don't know telling you there are dependancies for reading a book. I practice "tough love". Deal with it. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Complex Patterns simply explained.......2006-09-25

If you have been programming for a few years, you would have used a few patterns without even knowing it. Encapsulating rules into a class is a classic one - also called the command pattern. But, describing the concept in a common way is what makes communication easier among the community. Patterns are documented approaches to solving common problems in software design. Microsoft's Enterprise Solution patterns Using Microsoft .Net: Version 2.0 comes off with a great deal of success in explaining the various patterns in a simple and lucid way.

If you use .Net languages for designing software, this book is pretty much a must in your library. Many pattern books so far (even the Gang of four book as well as the classic one by Martin Fowler) have been primarily in other languages AND a bit esoteric/abstract; thus they don't come close to being very useful right out-off-the-book if you are a .Net developer. Using .Net technologies make the sample easier to understand i.e., if you use ASP.Net and C#, the examples have a greater appeal.

The patterns are grouped as a cluster of related patterns. I like the fact that the patterns presented are progressively better at solving a problem. The web presentation patterns section is an example. The examples themselves are easy to understand i.e., if you are familiar to the .Net programming space, unlike the Gang of Four book which had non-business application samples. I also recommend the `Do Factory' set of examples for understanding and applying various patterns.

Don't get confused by the 2.0 in the title which refers to the version of the book rather than usage of .Net 2.0 for the samples (which by the way isn't an issue at all). If you are at a point where you want to understand what patterns are and/or understand more of them, this book is a great starting point mostly for the simplicity of presentation and clear examples.

4 out of 5 stars If you're interested how design patterns are implemented.......2006-07-16

I bought this book since I wanted to know not only what design patterns are feasible on the .NET framework, but how to implement it.

This book takes a text book approach to discussing the pros and cons of a particular design to solve a recurring problem in application design.

This book assumes you have some enterprise application experience and are familiar with the .NET framework. This is an patterns book that is applicable to .NET.

Since I'm a developer, the items of most interest to me were chapter 3, discussing web presentation designs: MVC (implemented in 3 ways), Page Controller, and Front Controller.

What I didn't like was the way that the example in the Front Controller didn't have the capability to dynamically specify which view was to be the target page following a command object execution.

Although the sequence diagrams were very good in helping understanding the concepts of web design patterns; I felt that they should have used more diagrams in the later chapters.

Other than that, I found the book to have sufficient enough information that I needed to know to buy it when I came across it at Borders.

3 out of 5 stars good introduction - poor examples.......2006-04-27

The book provides a good starting point to learn Microsoft .NET, especially if you would like to implement applications using patterns approach. However the book does give you a feeling of good read that it was hurried, and the examples really does not adress the challenges you will face in real .NET projects. I should've picked up the electronic version of the book available free at Microsoft rather than buying this book.
