Gary Rocks.......2007-08-28
This is a great book! The Torah shape or Genesis shape of the scriptures is revealed well in this book. The Torah Story: An Apprenticeship on the Pentateuch
This is a great response to help postmodern people.
Exceptional work.......2007-05-07
After having Dr. Schnittjer as a professor at Philadelphia Biblical University, I was extremely thrilled to obtain his book. It is one of the most amazing resources that I have ever read. It is not only an exhaustive resource but it is a visually pleasing book as well. What an amazing thing to have your life's work become a reality and be able to impact so many people's lives as Dr. Schnittjer has done!!
Great Read.......2007-03-21
I have read the Bible five times straight through and find myself reading it again thanks to Dr. Schnittjer's excellent textbook. Written for the Bible scholar, it is readable by the average student and will inspire those readers to dig into the Torah like no other book I have read. It is honest in its approach and thoroughly enjoyable. It will challenge and stretch the reader. The exercises at the end of each chapter and the guide points throughout each chapter stimulate learning and comprehension. This is a must read for anyone interested in the foundational chapters of the Bible. If you are not an apprentice when you begin this book, you will be by the time you have finished it.
A Book for Scholars and Laymen.......2007-03-09
This book is easy to use by anyone who wants to understand or teach the first five books of Moses. Outlines, charts, and easy to read but rich information pervade the text. I can't stop taking down notes to use in my teaching ministry!
Amazing.......2007-01-11
This book is simply amazing. It is in a textbook format, but that makes it an easy read even if you are not taking an Old Testament History class. Dr. Schnittjer is well versed in OT History and Hebrew, so this book was a perfect fit for him, and he geared it to his students and their peers, not his colleagues. This book is very helpful!
Book Description
By turns suspenseful, philosophical, and humorous, this book chronicles the first seven years of an extraordinary apprenticeship in Toronto between a young man and a celebrated chi kung master from Shanghai. Many astonishing events occurred, such as frequent telepathic exchanges between master and student, the throwing of chi-energy over great distances, and at least one instance of what could be called Jedi mind control, right out of the movie Star Wars.

Enchanting, Witty Journey .......2007-07-17
In 1985, the author encountered the world of Chi Kung, an eastern discipline which supposedly involves tapping into a mysterious and immensely powerful "Life Force".
In MYSTERIES OF THE LIFE FORCE, the author is not trying to convince us that Chi Kung exists nor is he attempting to proselytize us with a "Why You Must" tract nor is he offering us an illustrated "How You Can" manual.
The book is more of a "Let me tell you a story about some strange things that happened to me." In the end, it is up to the reader to make of the account what he or she will.
The story relates the author's experiences as he enters a rather weird and magical landscape filled with things that Western science can not contemplate, let alone explain.
Because of the author's intelligent, articulate, engaging, non-judgmental and very witty approach, we gladly accompany him along on a journey which traverses a landscape somewhere between GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THE DANCING WU-LI MASTERS.
The slender book is populated with quirky, humorous characters who are presented with grace and generosity. As we accompany him on his narrative journey, the author draws on excellent background in literature, lore, philosophy, Eastern traditions and shares with us a delicious treat full of whimsical insights and little known facts.
The story itself is highly readable, wise and witty.
Whether one believe in the Chi or not, one can not help but be enchanted by this charming, well-written book.
A refreshing and intelligent departure from what you'd expect.......2007-07-02
The most delightful and unexpectedly witty tale about the study of chi kung I've yet read. Spare, engaging style gets you in the first sentence. Totally enjoyable, thoughtful, subtle, and unique. No "woo woo". It's just fresh.

Author Mary Rose O'Reilley is decidedly eclectic. She confidently blends sheep tending with her Quaker background as well as her passion for Mahayana Buddhism (a form of Buddhism taught by Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh). This may sound like the recipe for a soup of spiritual mush, but nothing could be further from the truth. Like Anne Lamott, O'Reilley also happens to be a hysterically funny storyteller who understands the importance of humility when writing spiritual autobiography. (One reviewer called O'Reilley a "social anthropologist from the Planet Mongo, a stand-up mystic going for the belly laugh...")
Whether she's talking about grief over dying lambs, the plague of Monkey Mind, flipping sheep, or a barnyard fashion crisis, O'Reilley keeps her metaphors down to earth and her epiphanies humble. The structure is especially inviting: a collection of brief essays of only about three to five pages each. But this collection also reads like a journey with a beginning and an end. It starts with O'Reilley as a college professor who decides to try some part-time animal husbandry at a local farm and ends with her finding a new direction in life that we can only hope will inspire her to write a sequel. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Deciding that her spirituality needed to be grounded in the real world, Mary Rose O'Reilley, a Quaker with a Catholic past and a Buddhist future, embarked on a year of tending sheep, whom she called her "two hundred spiritual teachers." In this seriocomic work of guerilla spirituality, O'Reilley takes the reader into a working barn, where she learns to "flip" sheep, inoculate them, and help them lamb (among other, earthier things). Dividing her spare time equally between meditation and dreaming of French pastries, the author happily fashions a spirituality based not in "climbing out of the body" but in existing fully in the world.

One of the Best Spiritual Memoirs.......2007-01-23
My first impressions of this book were that it was weird. That really describes the first section and a half of this book. It *is* weird reading about the excrutiating details of sheep farming coupled with deep religious insights. But it was weird in a good way, like waking up one morning in the middle of the winter at 6 AM and having the sun already be risen. The further along in the book I went, the more I enjoyed her weird combination of sheep farming, Buddhist retreat, music, and Quaker imagery. I found myself thinking about what she just said constantly; quite frankly, it was an absolute inspiration to me, especially when she starts delving into her life at Plum Village.
Her format also makes the book easy to read. You can pick it up for just 5 minutes at a time. With some memoirs, the format of short essays makes the memoir feel disjointed; with this one, it makes it feel whole.
I've read many memoirs and many spiritual/religious books. If I had to give a list of my top 3, this book would be on it.
Didn't interest me.......2006-11-10
I found this book boring. Her message was good, but her delivery did nothing for me.
Profound, Poetic, Perfect .......2006-04-10
In the past 15 years, I've read two, "personal memoir"-type books by women writers that totally blew my doors off: Terry Tempest Williams' "Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place" and Mary Rose O'Reilly's "The Barn at the End of the World: The Apprenticeship of a Quaker, Buddhist Shepherd." Very different books, at the end of the day, but both women think and write from deep religious traditions in their lives. Likewise, both have an abiding love for "the land," concretely and metaphorically, so what you hear at the end of that same day are calm but passonate voices that make you listen, make you want to listen hard to the observations, but with sense of deep fulfillment for the experience of it.
As for "Barn," I am neither a Quaker, a Buddhist, a farmer, a teacher nor an "older, adventurous woman" (as one reviewer suggested would be the type of person who would enjoy "Barn"). SO WHAT! "Barn" is a truly a banquet of wise and penetrating insights into the essence work (and working with and caring for animals in particular), of friendship, love, responsibility, accountability to yourself and to others, silence, mediation, the sacred, and, ultimately living honestly. There is much humor, gentleness, and "character" (for want of a better word to describe her inner strength) in the 90-odd "chapters" (some as short as 1 page) that are more like mini-essays on discrete but interrelated topics, so much so that I found myself going back, often, re-reading passages, savoring her prose and her insights, shutting the book, just letting the writing sink in. "Barn," resonated with me (an "semi-older, adventurous man") on more levels than I could ever have predicted. I'm a big fan of Thich Nhat Hanh's work, so the chapters recounting her experience at Plum Village and Thay's "dharma talks" were an added "bonus." Give it a shot, and take your time reading it; it's worth it.
Perfect Summer Reading.......2005-07-07
The Barn at the End of the World: The Apprenticeship of a Quaker, Buddhist Shepherd by Mary Rose O'Reilley is a beautiful and insightful memoir. There is something to be learned, pondered over, and highlighted for posterity on almost every page of this book. O'Reilley's humor and down-to-earth honesty regarding spiritual and personal matters made me feel at home, even in unknown territory. While reading this memoir, I learned to pause, remember, and cherish my own breath, to accept what is and what is not.
One of my favorite books ever...........2004-07-07
I loved reading Ms. O'Reilley's thoughts as she delved into her spiritual life through the retelling of the "everyday." As a fairly young woman with children myself, I enjoyed this author's empty-nester vitality and exploration of a life she obviously enjoys living. She does things that I hope I would do someday when I no longer have the children at home. Again, as a woman with children, I could relate in a very earthy way to finding holiness in... well... "dirty work." I like that Ms. O'Reilly doesn't mince the details in an attempt to be pious or meek. On the other hand, much of her writing style is absolutely delicious to read, no matter what the subject matter. This author can make sheep rectums something wonderful to read about!
I also love the way the author lives, something I would describe as very loving living. I love the value she places on many aspects of different spiritual traditions. It comes together in wonderful harmony, something that is very soothing and pleasing to read. (I would agree with some other reviewers that this book is not a solid reference for Buddhism or Quaker beliefs, but it certainly has a wonderfully lovely tone!) This book is about spiritual living - with or without a denominational label. I often found myself feeling a great sense of peace and calm while reading it, and enjoyed it immensely.
This book is heartily recommended!

Book Description
Upon its first publication,
Loving with a Vengeance was a groundbreaking study of women readers and their relationship to mass-market romance fiction. Feminist scholar and cultural critic Tania Modleski has revisited her widely read book, bringing to this new edition a review of the issues that have, in the intervening years, shaped and reshaped questions of women's reading. With her trademark acuity and understanding of the power both of the mass-produced object--film, television, or popular literature--and the complex workings of reading and reception, she offers here a framework for thinking about one of popular culture's central issues.
This edition includes a new introduction, a new chapter, and changes throughout the existing text.
Customer Reviews:
Loving With a Vengeance: Mass-Produced Fantasies for Women.......2000-04-21
This is a great book for anyone interested in contemporary women's studies. Modleski looks at women's entertainment genres (soap operas, romances, gothic novels, and women's film) that have previously been over-looked by critics and theorists alike. Modleski gives a convincing argument for resistence within the orthodox plot that shows how these seemingly simple-minded story lines offer women a chance to escape subjectivity and find a place of power in a patriarchal society. Though Modelski's argument can be a bit hard to wade through, it is worth taking the extra time to understand her point. It will influence the way you look at popular women's entertainment forever.

Book Description
In this innovative book, John Hutnyk questions the meaning of cultural hybridity. Using the growing popularity of Asian culture in the West as a case study, he looks at just who benefits from this intermingling of culture.
What does it mean when Madonna dons a bindi or Kula Shaker incorporate sitar music in their music? When Cherie Blair wears a sari to a public dinner? When the national dish in the UK is chicken tikka masala? Is this a celebration of multiculturalism or cultural appropriation? Hutnyk offers a cogently theorized political critique of the claims made in the name of hybridity and challenges the academic world to come out of its ivory tower and to engage in a critical debate around the real issues in cultural politics at the turn of the century

Customer Reviews:
Original.......2005-08-30
A very original and innovative game system. Something new for the old players and something easy for the new players. Definately a good system.
The Penultimate AlterRules.......2005-04-22
The rules are fast flexable and adustable, easy to learn, and any time of game can be played with them, from dungeon cralling to space opera and everything in between.
Desert Island? No Problem!.......2004-07-27
This book says that it is "The ideal companion if you're going to be stuck on a desert island and can only bring one role-playing game book with you." I agree. The rules are very easy to learn and use, and are extremely flexible. Several character's could have the same stat and it could do different things, such as different types of Force Fields or Special Attacks. You can make a vampire, Mecha pilot, or even Agent Smith from the Matrix (with a little work).
In Tri-Stat dX, there are different power levels, ranging from Sub-human to Godlike, and you use different dice types with each power level (hence dX).
The only real problem I have with it is that the difficulty modifiers can be a bit much at times, especially on using two weapons at once. Other than this, it's just a matter of getting used to rolling against yourself rather than your opponents. Overall, I like it a lot and am using it in the game I run. Thank you very much Guardians of Order, Inc.! Ciao.

Huges Help with Acorbat 7.0.......2006-03-10
I have been using Acrobat for projects since version 3.0. I've also bought a number of books on all these versions. This particular book is one of the best because it gives a specific problem or situation and then gives you specific instructions. No generalizations, just instructions. I found this approach very helpful with a last minute project and can see where it would have so many useful applications. Even for an experienced user of Acrobat, I found lots of nifty shortcuts that will make my Acrobat life better.
Not for the Beginner, Very Helpful for the Novice.......2005-03-01
Adobe Acrobat is a powerful program, capable of many things. In this book 150 of the best of thest tips and tricks are described in clear and easy language and illustrations using primarily screen shots that clearly show what should be done.

The descriptions are well written, easy to follow and clearly explained in terms of their functionality. This is not exactly a beginners book as it presumes you are familar with the basic program and how to use it.
