No book has done more to instruct, enlighten, and inform conservatives about economics than Adam Smith's undisputed classic.

a classic.......2007-07-20
It's a big book, but not in any way complicated. In a nutshell, it details the mechanisms by which personal liberty -- accompanied by personal responsibility and a just system of government -- make nations, and the individuals who live in them, wealthy. I had a Marxist professor who did not like Adam Smith because Marxist theory prefers to emphasize class warfare, while Smith is saying that everyone is capable of providing for themselves and the less the government interferes, the better off we all are. Many conservatives, meanwhile, like Adam Smith because they seem to perceive a "survival of the fittest" philosophy in his works. They are both wrong.
Really, The Wealth of Nations ought to be read along with Smith's other classic, The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Together, the message in them is that government should leave people alone as much as possible, but people ought to exercise that liberty without greed.
hard to find a serviceable edition.......2007-07-07
"The Wealth of Nations" is more readable than you probably think, and if you actually sit down to it you'll be repeatedly astounded by Smith's shrewdness.
But parts of Smith's original can be tough going in many ways. Why don't publishers acknowledge this by coming out with something more helpful than just the raw text?
Unfortunately, finding an edition that will be of great use to you is problematic. That's why I'm giving this book 1 star: not for the text itself, but rather for the paucity of well-done printings out there.
Anyhow. I have three before me:
1. The "Modern Library Classics" edition, the one you see on this page. This is complete and unabridged in a single volume, and has a handsome, sturdy feel to it. There is a 4-page introduction and a well-done index, but what irks about this edition is that while it has a plethora of footnotes, all the footnotes are of the "textual comparison" variety (e.g., "12 Car. II., C. 32"), rather than the kind that really help you understand antiquated terms and convoluted wordings. In other words, you'll get no help from the editors here.
2. Then there is the barren Wealth of Nations (Great Minds Series). There is a 2-page introduction at the beginning and an index, but beyond that it's nothing more than the original text, complete with the original punctuation and spellings (neither of which has been made more merciful for the modern reader).
3. The Penguin Classics edition, in two volumes: The Wealth of Nations: Books 1-3 (Penguin Classics) and The Wealth of Nations, Books IV-V (Penguin Classics). This is probably the least worst edition I have seen, with a superb introduction (nearly 100 pages long), and a glossary, all done by Glasgow's Andrew Skinner. But the only footnotes in the text itself are apparently Smith's own. They appear directly on the bottom of the page in question.
So good luck, whichever one you choose.
In case you need to know, Smith's original consists of five long chapters, or "books."
If anybody has a more respectable edition at hand, please comment and I'll incorporate it into this review.
Free trade and pro biz.......2007-01-25
Great study material - very difficult read, but a must read that should be taught in high school.
Buy this if you support free trade, less government, and the American dream. Beware, this books represents everything a liberal opposes, ideals which are deeply hated by those who support liberal gods like Barak Hussein Obama and Miss H. Rodham.
Must have........2007-01-03
They shouldn't let you out of school unless you have this one in your head. Nice to have a copy around.
Readable introduction to economic theory.......2006-06-15
For anyone coming to Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations the first surprise is how readable it is. Famous classic of economic theory though it may be, this is no dry academic tome to be read only by people with a scholarly interest in economic history. There are no detailed tables of statistics of the sort one might expect to find in a modern book on the subject, and no mathematical analysis, indeed not very much quantitative information at all. Instead there is a long series of examples to explain such ideas as why it is more efficient to divide work among several specialists rather than have a complete task fulfilled by one person, or why slave labour is ultimately more expensive than paying free workers, even workers in cities like Boston or New York, where wages were far higher in Smith's time than those in his native Scotland.
To illustrate the principle of the division of labour Smith discusses the manufacture of nails. Even a blacksmith -- skilled in working with a hammer but with no special training in nail making -- could not make more than a few hundred nails in a day, and those of poor quality. A specialist nail maker could make more than two thousand, but much greater improvements, both in quality and quantity, come from recognizing that even a task as apparently simple as manufacturing a nail can be broken up into smaller tasks: maintaining the fire at the right temperature, hammering the nail into the right shape, using a different tool to form the head, and so on.
A popular edition of Wealth of Nations is inevitably abridged, as one can hardly expect to buy a complete scholarly edition for a price not much more than that of a novel. Complete editions are available as well, but they are much more expensive. With sensible editing, however, an abridged version can include as much of Smith's writing as the ordinary reader is likely to want, together with notes to explain points that will be obscure to the modern reader. In the Oxford World's Classics edition Kathryn Sutherland has made an excellent job of this, with notes that fill around a fifth of the length of the book.

Buy another book.......2000-08-28
This book is easy to read that is the only good thing about it. You won't master JavaScript with this book.
If you are looking to use the examples in this book you will be sadly mistaken. The mirely don't work. In short a disappointment. If you buy this book don't be suprised if you want your money back. Part II is just as bad.
In you want a book that is easy to understand for all levels and scripting from the first day buy JavaScript Bible, It's excellent.
Buy another Book.......2000-08-26
This book is Easy to read being how it only 145 pages. As far as Mastering Java Script you won't do it with this book. The big flaw in this book it THE EXAMPLE CODE DOES NOT WORK. If you are new to JavaScript and you don't yet have the knowledge to start debugging don't buy this book. If you want to buy a GOOD Book with examples that work thats tells you what browser they will work on buy the JavaSript Bible. You will be writing script from the first day with the JavaScript Bible, an Excellent Book and its 900-pages of knowledge. If you buy Mastering JavaSript Part I or II you will be asking for you money back .. I PROMISE!
The book was great.......2000-03-27
I really liked this book because it picked up where the first book left off. It taught me every thing that the last book didn't.
My Personal Opinion.......2000-03-25
This is a very good book for the people who wish to make fancy personal web pages. This book grooms your Java Script concepts and also touches some nerves of advanced scripting techniques. It is a good start for the beginners and a good reference book for the advanced users. In short, it is wrth the price !

Cars, egos, leadership, family, unions, and rises and falls ..........2007-10-03
I'm really not into cars. However, I happened onto The Reckoning because of having read and liked earlier Halberstam books but ... and found it to be one of the best I have ever read, an absolutely great book. On more than one occasion, I have talked way too much about the remarkable stories it includes, way too long. The Ford:Nissan comparative history is a good mechanism, but the stories are the really great part - the totally hilarious (the salesman in the Port of LA changing the nameplates, trying to explain about the brakes and the engine blankets to the Japanese engineers); the absolutely tragic (Ford and his son, Edsel); the truly remarkable (the business dream team after WWII, the family actions after Edsel's death), the bizarre (pulling the chassis through a barn with a rope and measuring the elapsed time, any color as long as it's black) etc., etc. Lots of car and manufacturing and labor relations stuff, but a really readable book for anyone. And I am truly not into cars ...
A wonderful book.......2006-12-14
The Reckoning is a wonderful book that shows how the United States lost its dominance in the automobile industry. In true Halberstam fashion MacNamara is one of the main villains but through stunning research Halberstam paints a very clear picture of what happened. Japans attention to detail and innovation overshadow America's downfall. The big three are unable to respond and those who are running the Japanese business in the United States who were far more inventive. This book is still relevant even in today's world.
Relevant even today.......2006-09-23
If "The Reckoning" is not a classic then certainly it is an authoritative account of Nissan's assault on the U.S. market (and Ford's subsequent demise). The account of the Big Three's arrogance has been told many times since Halberstam published this book, but Halberstam deserves a lot of credit for so much of his book being so relevant to what American automakers are facing today. Insert big SUVs and big trucks any time Halberstam talks about Big Cars = Big Profits and you've got a pretty good idea of what's going on today with Ford and GM and their reluctance to come out with small, fuel-efficient vehicles in favor of high-margin SUVs. It is necessary to point out, though, that even though American auto executives were truly arrogant and complacent with their market share, Japanese manufacturing (lean production) was a paradigm shift. In order to compete on quality with the Japanese American auto would have had to spend billions of dollars on new plants and capital equipment (in essence, almost "betting the farm" that Demings' TQM was the wave of the future). The Japanese had the distinct advantage of having to start from scratch.
Execellent Book........2005-12-27
A fascinating book. FIVE STARS but some of the writing is flawed and difficult to read though 95% of it is engrossing. It's a long book! Very thought provoking.
Masterpiece.......2005-07-09
I have read this book twice. Enjoyed it and learnt from it both times.
The book compares US and Japan, particularly the Auto industry, taking Ford and Nissan as two representative companies.
The book provides remakable insights into how the two reacted to the '70s oil crisis. Walking down the streets in US, and counting the 'Non US' cars, confirms how correct Mr. Halberstam was in assessing the 'reckoning'. The financial performance of GM and Ford futher confirm it. The book clearly shows how the finance and number oriented 'whiz kids' at Ford, led by Robert Mcnamara, destroyed the soul of car lovers whose passion was cars. It also shows how the Japanese overcame tremendous challenges to win the Auto war.
Along with rich insights, the book scores well on style. A racy narrative, story-like style, with entertaining anecdotes and description of lively characters, make this book very readable.
Mr. Halberstam identified Korea as the next reckoning. Today the next one - China, is getting ready. Current events makes this book very relevant in today's age.

From the supplier: The final IRS regulations under IRC section 704(c) are much improved over the proposed regulations, but the burdens placed on partnerships when certain property is contributed to the partnership can still be substantial. Section 704(c) details how partnership taxpayers should account for differences between the book value and the tax basis of property contributed to the partnership. The final regulations do provide taxpayers with the flexibility of three accounting methods: the remedial allocation method, the traditional method and the traditional method with curative allocations.

Book Description
Preston Sturges' independence was at least partially responsible for his unique filmmaking style, marked by razor-sharp dialogue, wild plot turns and wondrously original supporting characters. Works such as The Power and the Glory, The Lady Eve and The Sin of Harold Diddlebock offer a distinctive and often satirical view of American life, deflating many of the ideals (honesty, justice, hard work, democracy, and others) that Americans feel a need to embrace. Each entry includes full filmographic data, a plot synopsis, and critical analysis of the movie.
Book Description
In its seven years on television, Buffy the Vampire Slayer earned critical acclaim and a massive cult following among teen viewers. One of the most distinguishing features of the show is the innovative way its writers play with language--fabricating new words, morphing existing ones, and throwing usage on its head. The result has been a strikingly resonant lexicon that reflects the power of both youth culture and television in the evolution of American slang. Using the show to illustrate how new slang is formed, transformed, and transmitted, Slayer Slang is one of those rare books that combines a serious explanation of a pop culture phenomenon with an engrossing read for Buffy fans, language mavens, and pop culture critics. Noted linguist Michael Adams offers a synopsis of the program's history, an essay on the nature and evolution of the show's language, and a detailed glossary of slayer slang, annotated with actual dialogue. Introduced by Jane Espenson, one of the show's most inventive writers (and herself a linguist), Slayer Slang offers a quintessential example of contemporary youth culture serving as a vehicle for slang.

Dry as dust and more disappointing.......2007-05-15
This is probably the only Buffy book which has bored me. I thought I was interested in Buffy-speak, and that's why I bought this book. But it only took about two paragraphs to put me to sleep, every time. It's very, very dry, and I think that people who don't have an academic background in linguistics would find it as impenetrable as I did. I'm sure that it's a very thorough piece of work - I just wasn't able to understand much of what Adams wrote. One other thing I didn't like was that much of the language referred to is used only on the fan discussion boards e.g. The Bronze. In my opinion, only Buffy-isms found in the show itself should have been included.
Uber-awesome.......2005-10-29
I love how the characters on Buffy speak. So distinctive and so funny and so clever. And now here's a book all about their use of language and "Slayer Slang!!!!" Sometimes I wish Buffy weren't so successful on TV, because other shows have tried to imitate this way of speaking and the results have been awful. Exhibit #1: Charmed. But as for Buffy, it's all good, and this book is great reading for fans, because the way that Buffy and her Scooby friends talk is a critical appeal of the show. I highly recommend this if you like the Buffyverse.
nice reference.......2005-08-15
I enjoy the banter on BTVS, and I'm glad that someone thought to create an entire book full of character quotes. The book also has it's own history of vampyr and gives more background information about characters in case an episode was missed. A good book for any BTVS fan.
An intellectual, fun read.......2005-04-04
This is not your typical collection of academic essays on "Buffy" ( How long I've waited to use that phrase!). Adams' book is a foray into the linguistic and lexiconical depths of the show. This is not the first piece written about the peculiar dialect of "Slayer Slang," but is perhaps the deepest investigation thus far. This is due, at least in part, to Mr. Adams' considerable background in linguistics and associated fields. Overall, he treats the material with the necessary gravitas while still celebrating its levity.
Recommended for all true Buffyologists
A tedious read.......2005-02-01
Although I am a fan of this series, I found Adams' writing style to be monotonous, convoluted, and dull. It's a shame that the disorganized style of the writer prevents readers from being able to truly enjoy the half way interesting concepts addressed in his book. I think this is a fascinating topic, but unfortunately Adams was not able to pull of this type of book due to his ostentatious writing style. I doubt I would read another Adams book again, but if someone else wrote on this subject I would be interested.

Customer Reviews:
Good preliminary to Mastering ArcGIS.......2007-06-30
We used Mastering ArcGIS in a GIS practicum course-dual level, and did 2 chapters a week including all exercises. I had had several GIS theory courses with a bit of GIS practice, and found it frustrating, although I got through it. I then decided to use the GIS Tutorial book to pick up some stuff I might not know, and to prevent me from forgetting it all over the summer. It would have been much better to use this book first--I have learned a lot I didn't know--then progress to the Mastering ArcGIS book. I admit I'm older than the average college student-we didn't even have calculators when I was a student the first time, so I didn't grow up with computers, but had one once they came out. If any professors are reading, use this book first for your GIS lab.
GIS review.......2007-05-10
This is a great publication for beginning GIS users. It goes through each ArcView function in a step by step process with visual aids for each step so you know you are on the right track. The tutorial CD is very helpful too.
Fantastic GIS Tutorial!!!.......2007-05-07
I originally purchased this book for a college class that I am taking. It is easy to follow and self-explanatory. It is so easy to use that you almost don't need a professor to teach you. This book is wonderful. Almost anyone could pick it up, install the software that comes with it and be using GIS in moments- with ease. This book will wt your appetite for what GIS is capable of doing. There seem to be no limits, just one's imagination.
Great Tutorrial - needed for getting started.......2007-03-09
Im into my sixth class in GIS and this tutorial covers a lot of what I got bits and pieces of. Its a great book that walks you through everything. I'm up to chapter 6. Some vague things and some mis-prints
A fine primer, but flawed.......2006-10-14
If you're looking for a step-by-step-hold-your-hand-guide to ArcView then this is your book. However ...and this is a big However... you'd better learn each lesson thoroughly as you go along, because there is no index. Let me repeat... no index. Oh, sure there's pages and pages of ESRI software license agreement, but no index. That being said, it is a fine reference and a good place to learn the basics.
