Book Description
PUBLICATION DATE: APRIL SHIPPING DATE: MARCH Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams is a true sports legend, a superstar who was his era's greatest hitter. His lifetime .344 average remains one of the highest marks ever achieved. Known at various times as the Splendid Splinter, Teddy Ballgame, and simply as the Kid, Williams played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox. Although missing nearly five full seasons due to military service and two major injuries, Williams still managed to hit 521 home runs to go with his six batting titles, two Triple Crowns, two Most Valuable Player awards, eighteen All-Star selections, and a .406 batting average in 1941 that remains the last time any major-leaguer has topped the .400 mark for a season.
Williams was a talented sportsman who hated to lose. He was also an athletic perfectionist who spent half his career being compared with and contrasted to fellow superstar Joe DiMaggio of the rival New York Yankees. The temperamental yet outgoing Williams wasn't exactly a media darling, but he was a respected, hard-working student of the game. Some observers say Williams was to hitting a baseball what Ben Hogan was to striking a golf ball, which might help explain why the two men had a mutual respect for each other that led to a casual friendship.
In I Remember Ted Williams, the legendary Red Sox outfielder is remembered through dozens of anecdotes, stories, and insights offered in their own words by former teammates as well as friends, associates, media, baseball officials, and fishing buddies. Together these contributors offer a unique and unforgettable reminiscence of one of the greatest and most enigmatic performers in baseball history. SPORTS; BASEBALL ILLUSTRATED 5 X 7 3/4, 240 PAGES HARDCOVER
Customer Reviews:
very good book on Ted.......2002-08-06
I got this book and TED WILLIAMS, THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION at the same time, since they both came out after Ted's death. This book is very good, very nice stories. The other book costs twice as much but has about four times more - over 100 photos, many more stories from many more famous baseball players and a CD with 67 minutes of interviews with Ted Williams. I recommend both books.

Book Description
Film critic David Sterritt presents an interdisciplinary exploration of the Beat Generation, its intersections with main-stream and experimental film, and the interactions of all of these with American society and the culture of the 1950s. Sterritt balances the Beat countercultural goal of rebellion through both artistic creation and everyday behavior against the mainstream values of conformity and conservatism, growing worry over cold-war hostilities, and the "rat race" toward material success.
After an introductory overview of the Beat Generation, its history, its antecedents, and its influences, Sterritt shows the importance of "visual thinking" in the lives and works of major Beat authors, most notably Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs. He turns to Mikhail Bakhtin's dialogic theory to portray the Beat writers-who were inspired by jazz and other liberating influences-as carnivalesque rebels against what they perceived as a rigid and stifling social order.
Showing the Beats as social critics, Sterritt looks at the work of 1950s photographers Robert Frank and William Klein; the attack against Beat culture in the pictures and prose of Life magazine; and the counterattack in Frank's film Pull My Daisy, featuring key Beat personalities. He further explores expressions of rebelliousness in film noir, the melodramas of director Douglas Sirk, and other Hollywood films.
Finally, Sterritt shows the changing attitudes toward the Beat sensibility in Beat-related Hollywood movies like A Bucket of Blood and The Beat Generation; television programs like Route 66 and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis; nonstudio films like John Cassavetes's improvisational Shadows and Shirley Clarke's experimental The Connection; and radically avant-garde works by such doggedly independent screen artists as Stan Brakhage, Ron Rice, Bruce Connor, and Ken Jacobs, drawing connections between their achievements and the most subversive products of their Beat contemporaries.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Starting with a chapter on Physiology, this 32 page supplement covers the superior senses of the Kobolds and their life cycle from egg to grave. It also details the links between dragons and Kobolds, as well as their racial ability to harness sorcerous magicks. The Habitat chapter covers the domains Kobolds tend to seek out whether in the surface world or far beneath in the deep dark, as well as introducing the concept of hordes to the rules given in Core Rulebook III. Kobold Society gives insights into how these creatures are actually arranged within their own domains, and their divisions into clans, castes and tribes. Full rules are given for the Winged Kobolds who are powerful magic users found only in the depths of the most heavily fortified Kobold settlements. Kobold Society is founded on mining, industry (such as it is) and the capture of slaves, though religion plays a heavy part for many too. Roleplaying with Kobolds is an instruction on how to portray these creatures to your players in a manner that should get them thinking twice about low Challenge Rating monsters, as well as how to characterize one who actually opens up a dialogue with adventurers. This leads straight into Scenario Hooks and Ideas - no Games Master worth his salt will have trouble placing Kobolds in a scenario, but doing so in a manner that keeps them interesting can become a strain. Here, we have eight fleshed out ideas that can keep Kobolds fresh and challenging even to characters of 6th-8th level. For players looking for a change, a small chapter is included on using Kobolds as Player Characters. No longer will Half-Orcs complain about being marginalized by society! Full rules are provided, as well as guidelines on how the various character classes appear when taken by a Kobold. The Slayer's Guide to Kobolds winds up with Ki'Chkeeshla's Lair, a full scenario ready to be plugged into an existing campaign and the Kobold Reference List. The latter includes Warband Leaders, Sorcerers, Sergeants, Taskmasters, Trapmakers and Hatchlings, all ready for Games Masters to use in their games.

Kobolds ate my hamster!.......2007-06-27
I like the Slayer series, alas, since they aren't true WOTC products, some things can only be alluded ot, like the names of dieties etc.
-Kobolds are one of my fave races in D&D, and this treats them well, giving them plenty of background, life style etc.
I only wish these books had been bigger, and could have added MORE detail, sigh.
But I highly recommend them, and this one for sure :)

Impressive new ideas, but not everything desired.......2007-04-13
The Slayer's Guide to Dragons (SGD) is one of the two most popular dragon supplements for the D20 system. SGD has the distinction of being co-written by Gary Gygax, one of the creators of the Dungeons and Dragons game. The other popular Dragon book, the Draconomicon, was released a number of months after SGD by Wizards of the Coast, and was written (in part) by industry veteran Skip Williams. So, which book is better? Both books are very different, and will fulfill different needs in a game. Let's look specifically at SGD's strengths:
- New dragon age class: Dracos Invictus. What happens when a dragon gets old - REALLY old? According to some sources, they eventually shrivel up and die after a thousand years or so. SGD, on the other hand, takes a different approach: they get bigger. REALLY big. And deadlier - even when they die, their death throws can take out an entire party. While these legendary creatures tend to sleep through most of their later centuries, placing an Invictus in a party's path can amount to an adventure of epic proportions.
- Solid explanations of dragon combat strategies. The book goes into detail about strategies dragons can employ within the current rules - from flight tactics to numerous uses for spells, DMs will have a whole new outlook on how dragons fight.
- Expansion of dragon philosophy. SGD explains and expands dragon history and philosophy rather than rewriting it (as other products have tried to do). For those that like the traditional view of dragons, this supplement will be more acceptable than some others.
- New dragon spells, magic items, and feats. Do your players not fear dragons anymore? Try sending a powerful black dragon after them wearing the devastating iron jaws, casting the adamantine scales spell on itself, and knowing the Chew feat.
- Classed dragons. Not all dragons are the same! Send a shape-shifting draconic bard into your game or battle a barbarian wyrm.
SGD, however, is not perfect, and suffers from the following flaws:
- Lack of information for players. There really isn't a lot of information for traditional players in this handbook. There are no feats specifically for dealing with dragons, no spells to counter the abilities of dragons, etc...
- Lack of reusable content. The book has a lot of material, but big chunks of it are not reusable. There is a 24 page adventure, for instance, but most DMs would run that once at most. The philosophies and habits of dragons are interesting to know, but DMs won't be referencing them on a regular basis. Things like new treasure items, hoard generation tables, encounter tables, and better adventure hooks would have been more useful.
- Disappointing artwork. Especially when compared to The Draconomicon, the artwork in SGD is weak. There aren't a lot of pretty pictures or anatomy diagrams, either, and there probably should be.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to DMs looking to put dragons in their campaigns (4 stars). For the average player or dragon fan, however, this supplement will not be very useful (2 stars) - buy something like Dragon Magic or Races of the Dragon instead. For the price (retail being $20.00 less than The Draconomicon), this supplement is a winner and should be in a DM's gaming library.
Must-have Dragon Lore.......2003-02-06
What intrigued me first to this book was new information on Dragons. I was pleased to find that it was written by the creator of the black, white, green,& blue dragons in the D&D world, and creator of the D&D world in general, Mr. Gygax. Included also is a very good adventure that is set in the the WORLD OF GREYHAWK!!! A new Greyhawk adventure by the creator of Greyhawk, and new dragon info by the creator of dragons...this book to me is considered more official than any Wizards of the Coast product! Great info to expand your campaign and well written at that.

It's nice having a collection of high-quality writing related to software and the business in one place instead of trawling the Web for it.

The whole book is fantastic though, and you should absolutely pick it up...in dead tree form.

Customer Reviews:
easy reading software book for a tech junkie.......2007-09-17
loved the easy read style, interesting topics, down to earth, quick discussions on numerous software development topics. found this to be both enjoyable and informative and of course opionated.
Sink or Swim.......2007-08-21
I reread this book the other day, and I had forgotten how much I love it. Two words: Eric Sink. Eric is an incredibly good writer, who of course, has at least one of his own books as well. Anyway, this compilation is terrific.
A great collection of interesting, humorous, software related writings. A great book to pass around the office when your done.......2007-07-08
The Best Software Writing I [Joel Spolsky], is a nicely rounded selection of essays, blog posts, and other intriguing software related tidbits weaved together by Joel Spolsky's witty dialog. This book is easy to read, light, humorous, and thought provoking. In an every changing software industry, books like this give us a better picture of what's happening in the industry. It's a great book to pass around the office or lend to a friend when your finished.
I highly recommend this and other books by Spolsky, check out his blog too.
Nice reading - at least most of it.......2007-01-11
A very good collection of nice reading, at least mostly. Some articles are not very impressive (at least for me), but there is a good number of really great ones.
More focused on writing than content.......2006-09-19
First of all I have to say, I really liked "Joel on Software". It's a good and even thought-provoking collection of musings about the software business. Perfect for the bathtub.
I was however disappointed by this book.
1) It is aimed towards software managers or possibly web programmers. There is no altitude in the subjects chosen. Nothing one really can use to become a better programmer, or to gain new insights in the software development process (there are better books for that). Time is spent better on reading something else.
2) Joel is a good writer, not a very good editor. I wish he could have just cut out the pointless, self-indulgent "introductions" to each essay, as they add nothing of value. If the texts presented are so good, they should be able to stand alone, don't you think?
If you however work as a manual writer, or write about software in your profession, maybe this can be some kind of inspiration.
