4 out of 5 stars DINER HISTORY.......2001-07-01

I am a sucker for diners, diner food and those great 1940's-1950's color postcards of diners all over the USA.

Part 1 of "Where Have You Gone...?" collects some of the best of those postcards in full page, full color reproductions and then explains the history of each place and its current(if still standing) location, staff, specialties, etc. Parts 2 and 3 examine, in photographs and text, the diners of today and the final entry celebrates the re-opening and re-vitalization of the Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine, a 70 year-old dining landmark.

The text is colorful, but verges on the mundane. However, the photographs and reproductions are first rate: We'll unfortunately never again see the beauty of the Art Deco design for the Court Cafe in Albuquerque, New Mexico or the main dining room/gas station and smaller cottages that made up the Dutch Mill Village of South Glasgow, Kentucky---They were all shaped like perfect, tiny windmills. Where but at Hick's Drive In on the Dixie Highway in Louisville, Kentucky would you find a circular building, a horseshoe shaped counter and an interior constructed entirely of glass?

My personal favorite postcard is of the Victory Cafe in Mattoon, Illinois--not that it is the most glamorous, but simply because it reminds me of my childhood, Saturday lunches at Baumgart's in Hackensack, New Jersey.

When/If you go antiquing, do you wander over to the bins of yellowing postcards? Then this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars re: Pete's Cafe.......2001-01-25

No, there's no fiction in this lovely book. Many of the illustrations are from old post card, very nicely reproduced. The Pete's Cafe illustration was from an earlier, destroyed incarnation of Pete's Cafe.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, for those who love revisiting the past........1999-04-23

The first thing I saw in this book was Hicks Drive Inn Restaurant in surburban Louisville, Kentucky. I grew up near this restaurant have many fond memories of it. It was as wonderful as the book indicates. Next I spotted Stebbins Grill in downtown Louisville on Chestnut Street (before it was Mohammed Ali Boulevard). The author refers to it as the most upscale restaurant in the book. So upscale that I recall being able to afford only to look longingly at it from the outside! On the front cover is Pete's Cafe in Boonville, Mo, which I remember from a family vacation--one of those places advertised for miles in advance along the highway. And the pork chops were wonderful!

However, I want to tell the author that he missed the REAL Starlight Cafe--still operating, and under that name--in Terlingua, Texas (in the Big Bend area). Wonderful food--the shrimp-kabob tacos and cold beer are gifts from heaven in this beautiful remote hot and arid area. The decor is that of an ancient theatre--the original function; but it really more closely resembles a funky cave!

4 out of 5 stars American Roadside Nostalgia at its Best!!!!!!.......1999-04-09

Who says you can't go back!! Read one of the restaurant descriptions;close your eyes and there's mom and pop catering to your every need. A great era of America's bygone days straight from the actual postcards of days past as well as the memories of those who were there with their own homespun rememberances. A bonus are the top ten pie recipes from the actual restaurants! Enjoy:the book and the pies. Thanks Mr. Anderson for a job well done......I remember those times........

2 out of 5 stars Mystery of Pete's Cafe.......1999-02-09

I've only seen reviews in the New York Times and another magazine, but the picture of Pete's Cafe in this book doesn't resemble the Pete's Cafe I remember just off of I-70 on old US 40 in Booneville, MO. Is there some fiction in this book?

PAT CONROYAMERICA’S MOST BELOVED STORYTELLERIS BACK!

“I was born to be a point guard, but not a very good one. . . .There was a time in my life when I walked through the world known to myself and others as an athlete. It was part of my own definition of who I was and certainly the part I most respected. When I was a young man, I was well-built and agile and ready for the rough and tumble of games, and athletics provided the single outlet for a repressed and preternaturally shy boy to express himself in public....I lost myself in the beauty of sport and made my family proud while passing through the silent eye of the storm that was my childhood.”

So begins Pat Conroy’s journey back to 1967 and his startling realization “that this season had been seminal and easily the most consequential of my life.” The place is the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, that now famous military college, and in memory Conroy gathers around him his team to relive their few triumphs and humiliating defeats. In a narrative that moves seamlessly between the action of the season and flashbacks into his childhood, we see the author’s love of basketball and how crucial the role of athlete is to all these young men who are struggling to find their own identity and their place in the world.

In fast-paced exhilarating games, readers will laugh in delight and cry in disappointment. But as the story continues, we gradually see the self-professed “mediocre” athlete merge into the point guard whose spirit drives the team. He rallies them to play their best while closing off the shouts of “Don’t shoot, Conroy” that come from the coach on the sidelines. For Coach Mel Thompson is to Conroy the undermining presence that his father had been throughout his childhood. And in these pages finally, heartbreakingly, we learn the truth about the Great Santini.

In My Losing Season Pat Conroy has written an American classic about young men and the bonds they form, about losing and the lessons it imparts, about finding one’s voice and one’s self in the midst of defeat. And in his trademark language, we see the young Conroy walk from his life as an athlete to the writer the world knows him to be.

Although I'm not a basketball player or even a sports fan, I couldn't put this book down. The book is really about the coming of age of a young man, as seen through the experience of an intense basketball season at a military academy. The writing is full of wonderful metaphors, and smooth and easy to read. The emotional journey--like other Conroy books--is intense. The difference here is that the experience is so real. He's describing real people, and the narrator is Conroy himself. The depiction of what goes on at The Citadel may shock you with its brutality. Its amazing that Conroy can recreate his senior year in college so clearly thirty years later. Thoroughly enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars A Great Life Lesson Learned!.......2007-01-12

My Losing Season is the story of The Citadel's '66-'67 season. Pat Conroy begins the book with a little background as to how he got into basketball and fell in love with the game, as a child in a military family moving from town to town every year. He takes the reader through his journey up until he arrives at The Citadel for college. While Conroy does give tremendous details about his experience at The Citadel, the majority of the book deals with the '66-'67 basketball season. Conroy takes the reader game for game through the ups and mostly downs of the season - their crazy coach Mel Thompson, the Green Weenies, the loss of confidence of the starting 5, and all the teams they play in the Southern conference.

As a reader you'll get to know these guys - DeBrosse, Cauthen, Kennedy, Zinsky, Tee Hooper, etc - you truly feel for them especially because they're real people and these games really happened! It's a great lesson on what one can learn from losing. Are those lessons more important that having a winning season? My only complaint was that since every chapter was really a different basketball game it got tedious at times. You definitely have to be a sports enthusiast to enjoy this book!

1 out of 5 stars Stop the whining!!.......2006-12-25

I have a message for Pat Conroy: STOP YOUR WHINING. I read the book on a recommendation from a friend - however, I wish had not wasted my time on it. Mr Conroy did a masterful job of weaving the story of his life into his expereinces at the Citadel. But, personally, I could not take his whining attitude - the tough plebe system at the Citadel, his "Great Santini" father, his demeaning basketball coach, the reaction from Citadel alumnists over his bashing of their school. This book seemed to infer that he was suffering some inhumane, life-long injustice. Give me a break!! I regret that Mr Conroy's reputation as a great writer and the publisher's willingness to support this project allowed the book to be published in the first place. For anyone paying attention to the rest of the world, this book is a crock...one word of advice for Pat Conroy: suck it up!! Alas, I think it's too late for Mr Conroy. One other note: You would never, ever see wrestler write a book like this!!

          5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Memoir.......2005-03-10

Conroy's fiction has always been a biography of sorts (Great Santini in particular) but I think his choice to chronicle his life through his final basketball season at the Citadel was brilliant. It brings together all the elements of his fictional life that we have come to love and respect: His overbearing father, the south in the 1950s and 1960s, and the one character common to all his books: Sports.

I think that Pat Conroy is the kind of person who most would envy the life he's had, it's ups and downs, and this book only solidifies that belief for me.

          1 out of 5 stars Disappointing, overrated.......2005-03-06

As a memoir of a relatively prolific and popular author, this book is a very disappointing. Ardent fans of Pat Conroy obviously love this book, but then again, they love everything with his name on it irrespective of content (a cook book?) Conroy revisits his early experiences that provided the repetivive themes in his fiction as psuedo-non-fiction. (The dialogue in the book reads more like fiction, and it is simply not credible that he could recount exact conversations from childhood to college.) He gives the reader minimal insight into his experience as a writer. Rather, the book reads like an exercise in self-therapy that does explore his well known issues rather deeply (although losing is not one of them.) Conroy may have provided all that he can in terms of describing his process and how he approaches his craft. If that is the case, then this book should serve as inspiration for aspiring writers. Publishing fiction is not necessarily about literary excellence. It's a business.

His treatment of losing is also quite disappointing, and I'm not convinced that his experience on an NCAA division I basketball team can provide enough material to speak to the subject as an adult. The book is more about mediocrity and unfulfilled expectations than it is about losing. His experience on a losing team is completely uninteresting and there are far more storied losing organizations that touch sports culture in many ways, all of them more significant than what Conroy has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Another 3 Pointer For Pat.......2004-12-31

Pat Conroy is a national tresure. His writing is sublime, he is one of the few writers who can capably place the reader into almost any situation and paint such a realistic portrait that the reader feels he is actually there.

"My Losing Season" is incredibly detailed, beautifully layered and provides the type of rich texture that anyone who has been curious about what a college basketball player goes through on and off the court will find virtually everything he needs to know here.

Anyone who has read Conroy's work knows of the destructive relationship with his father, but never has it been more fully nor magnificently analyzed than here. That Conroy could finally skip the veneer of fiction to re-tell his story with his father is a magnificent accomplishment. That final assessment when he reveals how his father literally changed his personality just to spite his son and prove him a liar was one of ther most jaw dropping passages I have ever read.

This book is Conroy's labor of love, and reading it is no different. Conroy's insights into the game of basketball, his teammates, coaches, and the bizarre situation of playing for the Citadel have been majestically re-told here. I have loved most of Conroy's work (Beach Music was the exception), and this one goes on the top shelf as one of the best books I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Some great conversation!.......2000-05-17

We'd know a lot less about American movies if not for a few English movie buffs who crossed the pond to produce some of the best books on the topic. John Kobal was prominent in this group, having been smitten with American films early on. His vast collection of photos yielded several books on its own and is a standard source for illustrating Hollywood's past. "People Will Talk" is not a photo book. In its 700-plus pages appear 41 interviews Kobal collected between 1964 and the mid-l980's. The subjects are Hollywood veterans from various phases of the business. Appearing are directors such as Howard Hawks, dance directors such as Hermes Pan, writers (Anita Loos), photographers (e.g., John Engstead, Hurrell). And of course plenty of actresses - and Joel McCrea, the only actor appearing. When interviewed, most of the subjects were at the end of their movie careers, and this, plus Kobal's insightful questioning, resulted in objective, candid appraisals of their lives and the situations and people involved. While the interviewer was not so rude as to question his subjects' recollections during conversation, footnotes here and there in the text correct what may have been lapses of memory. Each interview is prefaced by a photo of the subject, plus Kobal's summary and evaluation of the subject's career. Although I've read every interview in this volume several times, writing this review was slowed considerably by my inability to stop reading them again and turn to the typewriter. This is just the book for movie fans who like to hear how it happened from the lips of those who made it happen.

            Book Description

In the mainstream American imagination, the 1950s were an era of conformity when women strove to be perfect middle-class suburban housewives a la June Cleaver. But in reality, the 1950s were the decade of The Kinsey Report and The Bell Jar, of Cold War Communists and civil rights activism, and change for women.

In this engaging collection, cultural commentators explore the 1950s from the center to the margins-from Norman Mailer to Peyton Place, from suburban porn to Patricia Highsmith, and from Soviet women to lesbians in post-Nazi Berlin. Fascinating reviews and interviews include Alicia Ostriker on Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, Diane Wood Middlebrook on Willem De Kooning, and Ivy Meeropol on her documentary about her grandparents Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and Complete Coverage on the Dragon.......2003-03-13

This book has just the right mix of theory and analysis as well as tactical themes. Unlike some books (such as The Complete Dragon and Ultimate Dragon by Gufeld and Stetsko) this book focuses primarily on white systems against the Dragon and offers one or two systems against each of White's systems. It also covers early deviations once the basic Dragon position has been reached (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cd4 4. Nd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6). It includes some brilliant wins by Black (which is what the reader should strive to emulate) as well as some examples of Black players underestimating the potential strength of White's kingside attack.

There is even a section on anti-Sicilians which help the reader to find lines in which play is similar to that of the Dragon so that the reader does not have to sift through pages of an opening reference to find an antidote.

All in all, a great buy for players looking to add the Dragon to their repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever on the Dragon.......2002-05-29

Chris Ward is an expert on the Dragon. This is the second edition of the book and he has other publications on the subject, at least one video and a website where paying customers get his latest analysis. Above all he has the incredible ability to present the Dragon in all its beauty. Chris style is original, funny and makes learning the Dragon a pleasure.

This book presents complete sample games on each variation and there is an index at the end with the opening tree. One caveat: the book does not deal with the anti-Sicilians. For that you need to look elsewhere. Chris only presents a few pages on this subject and as soon as the word gets out that you are a strong Dragon player, guess what? Your opponents start playing the closed Sicilian or an anti-Sicilian. I hope on the third edition he takes a deeper look on this issue.

If you only buy one book on the Dragon, get this one.

Web services, the new way of stitching data and processing resources together to form elaborate, distributed applications, aren't like other software systems. They differ even from other architectures for distributed applications. In his fantastic Understanding Web Services, Eric Newcomer helps his readers figure out what Web services are all about. This book is better than any other book out there in helping readers come to grips with the terms, technologies, behaviors, and design requirements that define the Web services universe. It's remarkably light on code--Newcomer's logic appears to be that you should dig into the details of implementation only after you thoroughly understand the design concepts--and emphasizes definition and exposition of SOAP, UDDI, WSDL, and ebXML.

Newcomer's work looks and reads almost like a notebook, with succinct statements in the margin (for instance, "SOAP processors first have to check the mustUnderstand attribute, if any"), adjacent to paragraphs that go into greater depth. He's careful to call attention to differences among the relevant standards documents, and points out differences among implementations. Graphical learners may wish for more conceptual diagrams, as there aren't a lot of them here. Newcomer's prose is brilliant, though, and it's pretty easy to determine what he means. Perhaps best of all, Newcomer isn't cheap with his opinions and forecasts. It's helpful to read his informed feelings and predictions. --David Wall

Topics covered: The specifications, implementations, and popular trends that define the Web services movement. Conceptual coverage of Extensible Markup Language (XML), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Web Services Description Language (WSDL), and the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) protocol fills these pages. Emphasis is on how it all works rather than on how to program for it.

            Book Description

Web services enable the new generation of Internet-based applications. These services support application-to-application Internet communication-that is, applications at different network locations can be integrated to function as if they were part of a single, large software system. Examples of applications made possible by Web services include automated business transactions and direct (nonbrowser) desktop and handheld device access to reservations, stock trading, and order-tracking systems.

Several key standards have emerged that together form the foundation for Web services: XML (Extensible Markup Language), WSDL (Web Services Definition Language), SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration). In addition, ebXML (Electronic Business XML) has been specified to facilitate automated business process integration among trading partners.

This book introduces the main ideas and concepts behind core and extended Web services' technologies and provides developers with a primer for each of the major technologies that have emerged in this space. In addition, Understanding Web Services summarizes the major architectural approaches to Web services, examines the role of Web services within the .NET and J2EE communities, and provides information about major product offerings from BEA, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, IONA, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, and others.

            Key topics include:

XML facilities for structuring and serializing data How WSDL maps services onto communication protocols and transports WSDL support for RPC-orientedand document-oriented interactions SOAP's required and optional elements Message processing and the role of intermediaries in SOAP

            UDDI data formats and APIs

How ebXML offers an alternative to Web services that supports reliable messaging, security, and trading-partner negotiations

With Understanding Web Services, you will be well informed and well positioned to participate in this vast, emerging marketplace.

            3 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-08-10

As a glosary is very good, if you where aming to learn how to program a web service it was not very good for me. I would prefer more code samples from the basics to advanced. Definitely you should have a previous knowledge of XML, and maybe even some basic knowledge of webservices before reading this.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview, But Extremely Difficult Read.......2007-05-10

I recommend this book for everyone beginning Web Services. However, I do so with a word of caution: READ IT SLOWLY AND READ IT TWICE. The book has a great spread of issues but is extremely difficult to sit down and read/work through.

All the issues covered are covered lightly with the exception of the most important topics: WSDL, SOAP, UUDI and ebXML. The only thing it didn't touch on that I wish it would have was REST.

Key pieces of these topics are scattered and you need to be careful to read through and keep notes about where you can find more information (I found myself keeping margin notes on where key pieces of information were in the book at the introduction of each topic).

I recommend it so that you can understand the complexity and get a good overview of the topic, but I would definitely say that the book is only a good place to begin. It will leave your head spinning, but if you have purchased other books on individual topics, it will provide you with a reference on how they tie together.

The book has its ups and it has its downs, but it is worth reading.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of understandble and useless paragraphs.......2007-01-13

We bought this book trying to find a good overview about what web-service implementation is, what WSDL means what RPC/Document style means, etc, by an expert point of view, I must say at least this is not the case.

There are a lot of paragraphs with useless information, that in the first read you avoid because you don't understand, in the next reads you avoid because they are useless.

Terms are confusing and mixed up, explanations also.

If you like skipping paragraphs it is a good newbie introduction, if you have some background on web-service just avoid it.

            Really disappointing

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good overview.......2005-07-26

This book provides a pretty good overview of web services--although it's a little heavy handed with xml. Bottom line is that i6t would be easy to wal away from this book thinking web services is simply xml schema--and miss the bigger picture.

3 out of 5 stars Good coverage, difficult read.......2004-04-10

I have been thrown into the web services technology without a parachute and this book has helped to put things into perspective. You are not going to sit down and write code from this book, but it does help to define all of the pieces of web services technology and get you started.

With that said, this was a difficult book to read because the writing style is very abrupt, does not flow, and reads like an old style academic textbook trying to impress and confuse the student. I've read more technical books that were easier to understand because they explain their subjects in more natural prose. I found myself frequently reading pages over one or more times.

                Book Description

Integration is not about simply plugging two systems or organizations into each other. The vision of "plug and play" application and system integration is a pipe dream that may be appropriate for in the distant future, but right now enterprises face the more immediate challenge of connecting arbitrary systems in a manner that is cost effective, manageable, efficient and secure. Ron Schmelzer, senior analyst, ZapThink, gives you soup-to-nuts expertise for Web services and the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), as they represent an approach for integrating systems using an abstracted methodology called Service-Oriented Integration (SOI). Discover how Web services is becoming a key element to simplify and enable integration between legacy, heterogeneous and disparate systems.

Key questions answered: Are Web Services and SOAs something new, or just another take on the distributed-system/CORBA/DCOM paradigm? Why do we need them, and what leverage do they provide? How many organizations are implementing them?

                Gain real-world advice on:

              • The use of Web services for integration
              • How EAI and B2B integration are merging and what this means to you
              • Web services integration with mainframe and legacy applications
              • How SOI technologies and approaches solve lingering integration issues
              • Basic elements of SOI
              • Drivers and motivators for SOI adoption
              • Market segmentation
              • Key vendors and technologies in the SOI space
