Not for Food Lovers.......2007-10-22
Chris Kimball was signing copies of this book at Toronto's Cookbook Store last week. I generally find CI magazine useful and have liked some of the cookbooks, so I looked in.
Most of the recipes in this book did not appeal, even a little. But I was especially interested in the Ebinger's blackout cake recipe included in this book. This is a badly missed lost recipe from my own childhood. So I still contemplated buying a copy. Then I tasted Kimball's samples. Yuck.
The two items I tasted (both cookies) were extremely sweet. Sure, this is an individual taste thing. But these two items were gross. Both were called "Aunt something-or-other's ...".
The first one, a bar cookie, tasted okay, but I wouldn't willingly eat something so sweet. The second one was what looked like two shortbreads sandwiching some chocolate filling. Hoping to kill the aftertaste of the first one, I bit in. This one was so sweet that I actually gagged.
I asked a store employee about other recipes in the book. She was very politic, but pretty clear that I wouldn't likely enjoy this food. If these were samples of the best of this book, I wasn't buying.
Not My Cup of Tea.......2007-10-08
I just got this book the other day. It is well written and has a suitable number of pictures. The writers have also added a small blurb on their opinion/changes/suggestions for the recipe which is very helpful. My book came with half of the pages in upside down but I was able to correct the issue because it is a ring-type binder. I only gave the book 3 stars because many of the recipes had no appeal to me and probably should have stayed lost. I feel lucky if I am able to get a half dozen usable recipes out of a cookbook. I have yet to actually cook any of the recipes but have high hopes because of the past successes from other books from America's Test Kitchen.

The Great Country Inns of America Cookbook.......2007-10-21
I first saw this book in the library, enjoyed it and thought it would be a great gift for a gormand friend. I liked the book and the recipies so much I purchased an additional copy for myself...
Explore delicious comfort food!.......2007-09-21
The high point of this book is absolutely the flavor. The tomato pie is a sheer delight, although it was rather messy to serve when fresh (it had a tendency to fall apart). The peach cobbler certainly highlighted the best of that summer fruit. The zucchini breakfast meal is surprisingly flavorful given the short list of simple ingredients. All in all, flavor and appearance are the shining best aspects of Great Country Inns. You'll be proud to serve these recipes to your own guests, and there's no need to tell them how simple most of these recipes are---let them think you slaved over a hot stove!
Normally a lack of photos doesn't bother me, although it's a tad unusual in a book that's all about food oriented towards guests, special occasions, and so on; I don't think they're needed here in most cases because the recipes are pretty simple, but some readers might prefer them.
I did find some of the directions a bit ambiguous. For example, there's a casserole that involves "blending" a mixture of eggs and dairy with chopped & cooked potato, then baking. There's no indication whether blending means stirring or actual blending with a mixer, which would result in a very different texture and result. We decided to go with stirring and the result came out well, so I'll assume that's what the recipe meant. These ambiguities seem relatively few, however, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.
My only other negative is, like the photos, very reader- and occasion-dependent. Like most restaurant food, these recipes tend to use huge amounts of butter to improve flavor. The peach cobbler leftovers had a puddle of congealed butter in them after refrigeration---the recipe used so much that some of it separated back out again. This isn't a problem if you aren't concerned about healthy eating or bring out this cookbook only on special occasions, but I thought it deserved a mention in case it's a concern for you.
Overall this is a wonderful cookbook, well worth exploring in your kitchen. The vast range of recipes is impressive and delicious, and surprisingly easy to make.
great cookbook.......2007-07-09

Book Description
Salom Rizk, author of this autobiography, was born in 1909 in a tiny poverty-stricken town in Syria. Two brothers and an uncle in Iowa paid his passage to the United States, but he arrived penniless, homeless and with no knowledge of the language. The story of his incredible experience in self-education and his rise to one of the most sought-after and inspirational speakers on American lecture platforms is contained in "America, more than a Country." Out of love for America and his long time friendship with Salom Rizk, Rev. Harold Schmidt has revised Rizk's autobiography, capturing the essence of the original text and added thoughts about his personal experience.

America at it's Best.......2003-05-04
I found the original edition of this book on a very elderly auntie's shelf of books from her youth, and found that I couldn't put it down once I started reading.
This is a wonderfully engaging tale of an orphan boy who made his way to America and, with the help of many kind and generous people and a lot of hard work, made a life for himself in Depression era America... and then went on to make a difference for thousands of other people by simply caring enough to want to make a difference. This is truly a tale of America at its best, the bright and shining beacon of hope for so many people for so long. It is sad to see how tarnished that image has become in many people's minds.
I encourage others to read it at every opportunity, and then pass it along to a friend. It belongs in every person's library - even though I had already read the book, I bought this edition just so I could have a copy for myself and to lend to others.

Book Description
As government officials and political activists are becoming increasingly aware, international nonprofit agencies have an important political dimension: although not self-serving, these private voluntary organizations (PVOs) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) seek social changes of which many of their financial contributors are unaware. As PVOs and NGOs receive increasing subsidies from their home governments in the United States, Canada, and Europe, they are moving away from short-term relief commitments in developing countries and toward longer-term goals in health, education, training, and small-scale production. Showing that European and Canadian NGOs focus more on political change as part of new development efforts than do their U.S. counterparts, Brian Smith presents the first major comparative study of the political aspect of PVOs and NGOs. Smith emphasizes the paradoxes in the private-aid system, both in the societies that send aid and in those that receive it. Pointing out that international nonprofit agencies are in some instances openly critical of nation-state interests, he asks how these agencies can function in a foreign-aid network intended as a support for those same interests. He concludes that compromises throughout the private-aid networkand some secrecymake it possible for institutions with different agendas to work together. In the future, however, serious conflicts may develop with donors and nation states.

Thumbs Up, Right on the Money!.......2000-09-19
In this book, Brian Smith wrote about the motives of International NGOs from the US, Europe, and Canada which have been active in trying to help Third World countries to stand on their feet. It also contains a history on how these motives have evolved from the 1940s to the present. The conclusion of the book is that quite often, NGOs real motives are often differ from their "official" statements - while most NGOs stated that they are concentrating on meeting the immediate needs of their clients, in reality many are working more on long term projects that do not have immediate impacts, but might have one in the future, which in itself is not a bad thing. Some of the more troubling findings of the book are that many NGOs are afraid of challenging the status quo and the economic orders in the developing countries they are involved with, for fearing that doing so would intimidate both the host country and their own government(s), since most NGOs relied heavily from their governments' assistance to survive. Also, many NGOs failed to fully disclose their real mission in the developing world, which could create lack of transparency and could result in demands of more accountability and tighter enforcements from their home country's constituents. Overall, an excellent book. Perhaps it should be updated soon, given many changes that have occured in the pasy decade since the book was published (e.g., the end of Cold War, globalization, shift of development strategy from planning to market, reduction in foreign aid due to tigher budget of the Western countries, etc.).

Book Description
This is the most comprehensive study to date of the rich popular music scene in contemporary China. Focusing on the city of Beijing and drawing upon extensive fieldwork, China's New Voices shows that during the 1980s and 1990s, rock and pop music, combined with new technologies and the new market economy, have enabled marginalized groups to achieve a new public voice that is often independent of the state. Nimrod Baranovitch analyzes this phenomenon by focusing on three important contexts: ethnicity, gender, and state politics. His study is a fascinating look at the relationship between popular music in China and broad cultural, social, and political changes that are taking place there.
Baranovitch's sources include formal interviews and conversations conducted with some of China's most prominent rock and pop musicians and music critics, with ordinary people who provide lay perspectives on popular music culture, and with others involved in the music industry and in academia. Baranovitch also observed recording sessions, concerts, and dance parties, and draws upon TV broadcasts and many publications in Chinese about popular music.

Fully revised and beefed up with plenty of new material on today's Standard C++, the new edition of Bruce Eckel's Thinking in C++: Volume I is an excellent tutorial to mastering this rich (and sometimes daunting) programming language, filled with expert advice and written in a patient, knowledgeable style.
The effective presentation, along with dozens of helpful code examples, make this book a standout. The text first sets the stage for using C++ with a tour of what object-oriented programming is all about, as well as the software design life cycle. The author then delves into every aspect of C++, from basic keywords and programming principles to more advanced topics, like function and operator overloading, virtual inheritance, exception handling, namespaces, and templates. C++ is a complex language, and the author covers a lot of ground using today's Standard C++, but without getting bogged down in excessive detail.
The emphasis here is on practical programming, so there's basic advice on using header files, preprocessor directives, and namespaces to organize code effectively. Each chapter ends with exercises (usually about two dozen), and the entire text of the book is available on the accompanying CD-ROM. (So is the second volume, which tours Standard C++ classes and other advanced topics.)
Whether you have read the first edition of this book or not, there is much to mine from Thinking in C++. This new version continues to set a high standard as an approachable and thorough tutorial. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Introduction to objects, inheritance, composition, polymorphism, exception handling, analysis and design fundamentals, advantages of C++, transitioning from C, compiling and building programs, writing C++ functions, flow control, C++ operators, data types, casting, debugging tips, pointers to functions, designing reusable C++ classes, conditional compilation and header files, access specifiers, constructors and destructors, function overloading and default arguments, using const and static effectively, inlining, namespaces, references, copy constructors, operator overloading, using new and delete for dynamic objects, virtual functions, abstract classes, introduction to templates, and iterators.

Thinking in C++, Volume 1: Introduction to Standard C++ (2nd Edition) .......2007-09-23
Bruce Eckel's book very thoroughly covers the Standard C++ programming language. It may be a little dated (my copy says (C) 2000), but I don't think the Standard has evolved since his writing.
The Good: Bruce does a terrific job going into gory detail on all aspects of this (let's just face it) complicated language. C++ has lot's of traps and ditches to offer compared to C# or Java, and if you plan to use a lot of the advanced concepts of the language, a helper like this book is almost indispensable. If you are coming from the C realm, this books is a real hit: Bruce constantly points out the subtle differences between C and C++, and also explains how C++ is a safer language than C in almost every facet. The book does a fairly decent job in going from the simpler to the more advanced concepts, though a few times he has to use constructs that will only be covered in later chapters (Bruce does point out these outlooks though appropriately). If you are really into learning a new language, the Exercises at the end of each chapter are a terrific way to learn the new concepts.
The Bad: The text within the chapters is not very well structured. If you later on try to find something, the prose form of the sections does not really help you doing that. Also, the Index is not that great either. Often times you are sent to pages that just marginally address the keyword, and the essential introduction or explanation of the keyword may not be in the index at all. My real gripe though is with the practicality of the examples. While I previously stated that the Examples by itself are a great way to learn the languate, a lot of his examples are just plain bad ideas how to code. I understand where Bruce is coming from, he tries to find examples for all the subtleties he just covered in the section. Nevertheless, he often asks for pretty bad things to be implemented. On principle, from my own personal experience a lot of the special cases of the language are hardly ever used in real life situations.
I do recommend this book, especially if you are coming from C. Just take the examples with a grain of salt. If you are a seasoned software developer, you can probably tell anyways which of the examples or techniques should not be used on the job.
A must have ..........2007-06-11
this is a must have for all people that need to learn c++
even if you are novice or experience developer this is a book that you will always open and consult.
An all-around great C++ book.......2007-03-04
This book was a pleasure to read. It does a very good job of teaching you the C++ syntax in the context of the C++ paradigm; a great improvement over many similar introductory books that seem to focus upon teaching you syntax only. By the time you get through with this book, you will have a good idea why things in C++ work in the way that they do, and such knowledge helps you considerably when you actually start writing useful code.
Overall, this is one of my favorite programming books, and it's highly recommended.
Start learning C++ here.......2007-02-20
If you're looking to learn C++ as your first language, or your first OO language, good luck to you! I tried learning C++ after FORTRAN77, and in retrospect, that was a big mistake. Go and learn another object oriented language first, Python or Java or Ruby (maybe even OO Perl). You probably also want to learn a tiny bit of C, just to get used to pointers and memory management.
Done all that? Good. I will be assuming in this review that you already know how to program reasonably and you're not trying to cram C, C++ and OO into your head at once. So, you just want to learn C++. If that's the case, this is the perfect book to start with.
The book assumes that you're coming to C++ from C, and builds up from C++ as C with a stricter compiler, then onto C++ as 'object-based' language - objects as structs with functions and encapsulating initialization and memory allocation with constructors and destructors. Finally, object orientation (i.e. inheritance and polymorphism) is introduced. Rounding things off is a brief chapter on templates and iterators, but it's only a sneak preview, really.
Only the core of C++ is covered: the standard libraries and other topics (like exceptions) are deferred until volume 2. This leaves volume one as a lean and mean exposition of the core of the language. This is quite an achievement, especially as it manages to be both comprehensive and readable. The somewhat begrudgingly object oriented flavour of C++ is also on display in this book, particularly when compared to Thinking In Java from the same author: there are interesting explanations of what the compiler is getting up to behind the scenes, which should presumably assuage the fears of the more paranoid C programmer. There are copious code examples, although the expected output is not given, which would have been helpful. The introduction to the make utility will also be very welcome to many (including me).
This is not quite as good as Thinking in Java, perhaps because of its C-centric opening section, which may require you to familiarise yourself with the differences between C99 and C++ simultaneously (this is particularly apparent in the discussion of the static and const keywords).
But it's still a great introduction to C++, and it doesn't waste time with the basics of variables, loops and conditionals. Between this, the second volume, and Koenig and Moo's Accelerated C++, you have all you need to graduate onto the intermediate C++ books, like the Exceptional C++ and Effective C++ series.
very pleasant reading.......2007-02-12
This is a book that covers c++ almost from scratch. I've had no other programming experience than some php and a tiny bit of C before I read this book. It is a real nice introduction both to the language c++, but most important, it is an introduction to the mindset of object oriented programming, it has some real good chapters in the beginning detailing different processes to begin and plan a project in an object oriented fashion.
