5 out of 5 stars Gundam Wing manga at its best..........2002-03-25

When I bought Blind Target, I pretty much knew what to expect- I'd read a fan translation on the Internet, and I had already seen the untranslated BT manga on the same site. What I did not anticipate was the sheer elegance of the actual drawing and how well the translation was done. If you have read the series manga published by Tokyopop, this is *nothing* like it. The drawing style is beautifully fluid, and the story is perfect. Viz's translation is wonderful, and I only found one or two minor spelling/grammatical errors in the actual BT story. I can't say the same for the sections called 'Remixes'- the reviewer who said these sections detract from the manga is right. They are very annoying, and contain nothing new. Besides, they only focus on the five pilots and Relena, with the occasional insertion of Hilde or Catherine, and maybe Dorothy. What about Zechs and Noin? Une? However, it is easy to skip over them and continue with the entire reason one buys BT: the story.
The basic plot of Blind Target goes like this: in the interval between the series and Endless Waltz, the pilots and Relena are trying to find a sense of normalcy in their lives and adjust to peace after fighting for over eight months. However, at the same time the White Fang remnants are regrouping, and they want the Gundams as the symbol for their rebellion (hey, it worked last time...). There is a lot of action (though no mobile suit battles) as the Gundam pilots gather to try to stop the White Fang from starting another rebellion. Besides kidnapping, there's assassination, a shootout, intrigue, double-crossing, past aquaintances coming back to haunt... just another day in the Gundam Wing universe...
The original characters introduced in this manga- Chris and Ralph- are as well done as the pilots. Of the two, I particularly like Chris. It should be a credit to the writers that they are done so well.
My only complaint about this (as well as Ground Zero) is that they only focus on the Gundam pilots and Relena. How about the other characters? Like, say, Zechs or Noin or Une? We hear *nothing* about them in the space between the series and Endless Waltz, and I for one would like to know exactly what Zechs was up to in that year before the Barton incident. Or how Preventer was formed. Anything!
Even with these (minor) faults, I would highly recommend Blind Target for its action, excellent characterization, and beautiful art. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Blind Target is, well, blind..........2002-03-16

Yaoi fans, do not be perturbed by the "1+R" in this manga! Blind Target was a radio drama before this artist made a visual story out of it, so that little tidbit never happened, anyway, because technically that was the artist filling in a part of the radio drama with no specified speech or action. Do not give up on this manga! Even though it isn't canon, it is still a wonderful addition to any GW fans' collection. I *loved* Episode Zero and Ground Zero and am awaiting Battlefield of Pacifists in the mail. I originally wasn't planning on ordering this manga because of the "1+R", but it's non-canon, and wasn't even said to have occured in the radio drama, so don't give up hope on a good story with everyone's favorite pilots!

5 out of 5 stars Gundum Wing Blind Target.......2002-02-12

My Book Review Gundum Wing Blind Target

It is about five Gundums and five Gundum pilots. Duo, Hero, Quatre, Wufei, Trowa use the Gundums for war. But the White Wang are trying to get them. I like this book. They can blow up things by using the Gundums. The author made forty nine episodes and made a book out of the forty nine episodes. Nobody eats worms in this story. There are some animals in this story. But you can't see their skeletons. NO, there are no bones in this story!

5 out of 5 stars The best manga based on Gundam Wing.......2001-04-26

Viz Comics is currently releasing "Blind Target" as a 4-episode comic book in English in the U.S. Issues 1-3 are available at comic stores now, and in a few months, a compilation book should also be available.

"Blind Target" takes place in between the Gundam Wing 49-episode TV show and the "Endless Waltz" OAV/movie. Some remnants of White Fang, seeing that the Gundam pilots no longer have need for the Gundams, try to capture the Gundams for their own use. Some of the plot points leading up to Endless Waltz are hinted at, such as sending the Gundams to the sun and why Wufei joined Mariemaia's army.

Of the four "official" Gundam Wing manga I've seen (the original series, "Ground Zero", "Blind Target", and "Episode Zero"), IMHO "Blind Target" is the best. The artwork is clean and modern, and the character designs strike a nice balance between the softness of childhood and the hardness of being a warrior and an adult. "Blind Target" is probably a bit more aimed at the shoujo (female) crowd, with more overt romance than found elsewhere (though the last issue of "Ground Zero" was all Heero/Relena), but I like that sort of thing. The plot isn't that special, but the supporting characters (Chris & Ralph) are very believable and do a good job with presenting their views.

Overall, I'd recommend "Blind Target" highly for Gundam Wing fans. If you're not a Gundam Wing fan, the manga may not make a lot of sense since it does assume familiarity with the series.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't read it, but I love the art work!.......2000-12-31

Luckly for me I was able to find it in a local Japanese bookstore in Manhatten. I'm really sorry about the fact this manga is out of print and so many people are trying get they hands on it. The artwork is amazing and by looking at the pictures, the relationship between Heero and Relena strengthens. I know this is also a out of print title but in the manga version of Endless Waltz, Heero actually stays with Relena! Unlike in the anime where he leaves her, he stays with her to protect her. Awww!

5 out of 5 stars Just read it.......2000-11-18

HEY! I'm a huge Heero and Relena fan, and if you are too, Blind Target is the thing to read! They do kiss (well, okay, almost) and you just gotta read it!

        4 out of 5 stars Blind Target!.......2000-10-19

Looks like those writers did it again. Blind Target is a wonderful series, explaining most of the events of the future. While the series is a little short, it gives off a hint of Trowa's mysterious past, even if you do know what it is. ^_^, I've read this is Japanese before, and it was quite good. I recommend it.

The second I saw this journal in my local bookstore, I HAD to have it. If you saw my bookshelf you'd know that I have TONS of journals and this one, by far, is the most intriguing.

The cover looks like a bona-fide dime-store trash novel with the red-dye page-edging to match. The cover is soft which, for me, is preferred because it makes it much easier to write in.

It's larger than the original book. It's not as small as a paperback (trash) novel would be.

The moment I bought it I went online (here) and bought the rest of the series. I believe there are 4 in all and I wish there were many more.

If you like journals of intriguing cover value that are easy to write in, you'll LOVE this journal series. Get them all! You won't be disappointed.

Get this journal (or all 4 of them) for someone who is a writer or someone who loves to journal!

This book is basically a humorous how-to guide on how to save money by being a total cheapskate. The cover of the book is of the author peeing in the shower to save a flush - don't worry, he's fully clothed!! The book lists techniques on how to save money on power bills, gas, water, food/restaurants, and various other things. It also has tips on how to save money on dating. One dating technique is for a guy to schedule his date with the girl as late as possible; therefore, she probably would have already ate something before the date, so you don't have to worry about buying a full course meal and a bottle of wine for her during your date.

                            Book Description

Relations between France and Britain have always been uneasy and ambivalent. But in cinema the Second World War changed all that for a time. Although the two countries' wartime fortunes differed, post-war both were busy reintegrating returning servicemen and prisoners of war and accommodating the changed aspirations of women. Margaret Butler examines these subjects and more in her comparative study of the cinemas of Britain and France during and after the war. Using the concept of community, she shows how cinema dealt with ideas of belonging and alienation, inclusion and exclusion, unity and division. She also draws on contemporary debates and a perceptive reading of key films, to reveal afresh the meaning and appeal of such French classics as Le Corbeau and Les Enfants du Paradis and notable British productions such as Waterloo Road and Passport to Pimlico.

                              Book Description

"The future is certain," according to an old Soviet joke, "it is only the past that is unpredictable." But it is not solely in totalitarian societies that the past is contested terrain. Disagreements about the meaning and significance of past events and people have been part of the landscape in our own society from its inception. To the historian, therefore, the unpredictability of the past is no laughing matter. Indeed, so protracted have historical disputes become in recent years that there has been a growing conviction among many that the venerable craft of history is in a state of crisis. In this brilliant new collection of essays, Lawrence W. Levine, one of our premier writers of history and President-Elect of the Organization of American Historians, offers an incisive response to the controversy which rages in the academy today. This debate among historians does not concern, as one might think, conflicting interpretations of the past, but rather concentrates upon which past events, peoples, and cultures are significant enough to deserve our attention. Taking issue with those who desire "synthesis" above all else, Levine's book constitutes a passionate call for inclusion, a history that extends the traditional focus on the centers of political, economic, and social power to embrace the panoply of ethnic, racial, regional, occupational, class, and gender groups that have been ignored or distorted in the past, and subject areas--like folk and popular culture--that have been by-passed or denigrated as trivial. The fourteen essays included here seek not to erect new fences and shut more doors but to expand our knowledge, supplement our approaches, and broaden our historical vision. The Unpredictable Past offers eloquent discussions of American history and historiography at large, African-American culture, and, perhaps most fascinating, the times of the Great Depression during which film, radio, photography, and even the comic strip emerged as significant manifestations of a changing American popular culture. There are also trenchant examinations of folk songs and folktales, Marcus Garvey's role as a black leader in the 1920s, jazz and American culture, Hollywood's unique view of national government in Washington (especially as seen in the films of Frank Capra), even Shakespeare's role as the most popular playwright in nineteenth-century America. The immediacy of each essay is enhanced by the brief introductions that place each one not only in the context of Levine's career, but in that of American history as a whole. Through the course of the book, Levine demonstrates how history, from generation to generation, is viewed through the prism of an ever-changing present and rather than distorting our vision, offers us new ways of seeing things, fresh insights not only into the past, but into the present and the future as well. The Unpredictable Past is a remarkably wide-ranging lens for viewing the richly textured history of America.

I love to gamble and this book has been great for learning new games I would never, ever have had the guts to try. Sitting at slots all day just doesn't cut it anymore, plus it is way, way too expensive (that's why casinos love slots!). This book has pictures of actual table games along with clear descriptions of how to play, the best bets to make, the bets to avoid, and table etiquette. So, after reading a chapter about a particular game that looks fun to you, you can actually sit down at a table (pick a quiet one at first) and make some smart, easy bets. No more worrying about looking like a fool. If anything, you will be the one wondering how other people can be placing those stupid bets that have the highest edge for the casino instead of the player. This book makes it very clear which bets are good for you and which for the casino. This doesn't mean you will always win (there would be no casinos if this was the case), but you will be betting to improve your chances of winning instead of betting in ways to ensure you lose your money pronto. Plus, it has excellent advice on "bankroll" management, about how to make your money last and what not to do, like use your charge card to get more cash. Money management is just as important as learning the right bets, especially if you really like to gamble.

I have learned enough new games (craps, black jack, pai gow poker) so that there is always something to play depending on my mood (craps if I feel super-social, black jack if I want to intently focus, and pai gow to be a little more artsy). I plan on learning some more. I still like slots, but I am no longer limited. Tables just don't scare me anymore. Thank you so much KISS Guide!

While I cannot point to any specific guarantees in this book, I still felt disappointed that I used various strategies they suggest and lost in Las Vegas. Thank goodness I followed at least one of their suggestions and set a gambling budget.

I managed to lose every nickel of it.

I guess if there was value in the book, I did not look like a total idiot playing table games in a casino.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great intro to the world of gambling.......2002-02-22

Even though I'm not old enought to go to a casino, I probably know more about gambling than most people. This book is great because it introduces you to games you didn't know how to play, the odds of all the games, and lots of different strategies. There are over 120 bets on the craps table! Also it gives you insight to gambling in other countries and real advice from the author's personal experience. The author also provides you with lots of trivia you can amaze your friends with. Such as the most bingo cards played at one time was 346 when there were 30 second intervals between the calling of each number. If you want to learn a little about all the games, this book is for you, if you are an expert, you would still love the trivia! This is a must buy for everyone.

SAS For Dummies, like all of the books in the Dummies series I've read, is an enjoyable to read, easy to understand introduction to a broad and complex topic. As some have mentioned, the focus of this book is not on "SAS programming." Rather it covers getting your analysis and reporting work done using some of the newer offerings from SAS in the "business intelligence" area, including Enterprise Guide and other products. There is, however, a helpful chapter on what kinds of programming tasks can be done by more advanced users and what long-time SAS programmers may miss. (For a good book on SAS programming, I'd recommend The Little SAS Book). Also included in SAS For Dummies is good coverage of data integration, "Stored Processes" for analysis and reporting, and 2 chapters on analytics. These 2 chapters are especially helpful as an introduction to difficult concepts. Overall, this book provides a helpful overview of getting your data manipulation, analysis, and reporting tasks done with SAS, and a no-nonsense, nuts and bolts understanding of some of the newest software from SAS.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to SAS- no programming required!.......2007-07-25

SAS for Dummies may seem like an oxymoron, but this book was very useful at bringing a formerly frustrated user like me back to SAS from S, Systat, and Minitab.

When I had tried SAS a few years ago, it was very heavy on programming and learning a fairly complex language (the SAS language.) As a social scientist whose forte isn't programming (I found the syntax and many manuals! of SAS programming very difficult to pick up and use), I wanted easy access to data importing, data management, graphics, and statistical analysis. This book and the new SAS product covered in this book actually fits the bill (Enterprise Guide.)

Overall, I like the main product in the book and found the sections on importing and managing data good introductions to something that used to be incredibly hard with just SAS programming. The book requires no programming, but does have a chapter for those who already program in SAS or want to run old SAS programs in EG.

I really like that I can create many of the graphs that I spent hours or days before in just a few minutes. The book also has a nice overview of many statistical analyses, including a few techniques I may able to add to my work in the future.

After just a few weeks, I can see the real value of SAS since it so much easier to do my work with Enterprise Guide. I can transition much of my simple and advanced analysis to SAS. I highly recommend this book if you are in a similar situation and need to manage, graph, and analyze your data all in one application.

This book is going back to the store. It is not a guide to SAS but to SAS Enterprise. Thank goodness a colleague quickly short circuited my learning curve on this book. He told me as I sat with a data set about to plunge in. We don't even have Enterprise on our company computer.

                                  Too bad...I had high hopes.

This book should be titled "SAS Enterprise Guide for Dummies", not "SAS for Dummies".

If you are looking for a beginner's guide to SAS Enterprise Guide, this is a good choice. However, if you are looking for a guide to classic SAS, the SAS Datastep language, Proc SQL, etc... this is not the book you want.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference!.......2007-06-24

SAS For Dummies is exactly what I was looking for - a high-level reference guide for the capabilities of the Enterprise software, which can be daunting. Perfect for technical managers and non-experts. The information is easy to follow and has enough wry humor thrown in to keep the reader's interest.

                                  Book Description

Now that we're well into the Information Age, it's only natural that data warehousing would be a hot topic. Data Warehousing For Dummies arrives just in time to help you take advantage of one of your organization's most important resources -- information in the form of lists, records, databases, and digital media from external as well as internal sources.

In Data Warehousing For Dummies, data warehousing expert Alan R. Simon takes a practical inventory of state-of-the-art data warehousing. He covers all the essential technologies and strategies, including

Author Alan R. Simon presents his specialty plainly and practically, so that you and the other Information Systems professionals in your organization can cobble together a sensible strategy for data warehousing.

3 out of 5 stars Good foundation, but getting rapidly obsolete.......2004-09-20

I enjoyed reading this book and found it an excellent foundation to issues in data warehousing. However, note that this book was published in 1997, so it does not include anything that was developed after that date. (To be fair, it accurately predicts some trends.) I wish the author would update the book to 2004!

3 out of 5 stars Good Only for Beginners.......2002-12-22

This book is good for total beginners, to get familiar with the Data-Warehousing Lingo's. Though the author does tend to give some wague out of the blue examples, it is an interesting read. Buy it only if you have no clue what a database or data warehousing is.

3 out of 5 stars OK for total beginners and laypeople.......2002-03-28

This book is good for the person completely new to data warehousing, as long as they DON'T take it as the complete or last word on the subject. Most of the basic concepts are presented well, but there are various errors in some of the specifics, and there are some theories described that are 'old school' and not necessarily relevant with todays technology (in the last 5 years data warehousing has changed in the capability of tools and in approaches & architecture).

RECOMMENDATIONS: If you are a business person trying to understand what your computer people are talking about re data warehouses, data marts or business intelligence, this is a good starting point.
But, if you are an IT/IS/computer person, skip this book and read Ralph Kimball's "Data Warehouse Toolkit", then graduate to his "Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit" (covers many more aspects), and Bill Inmon's "Corp Information Factory". These 3 books, and a DBMS specific book (e.g. "Oracle 8i Data Warehousing") will be all you need for your first few projects.

5 out of 5 stars A great DW book for beginners.......2000-10-30

Look, this look isn't for experienced DW people. However, it wouldn't hurt some of the DW "experts" I know to read it.

The author gived down to earth comments and examples of what the industry entails and what DW is all about. He covers most of the issues and gave me some interesting insight into some areas that I haven't yet delt with.

I've been working in DW for over 5 years. Even so, I think this book is worth reading. I'm gald I did.

2 out of 5 stars A couple nice points but it cutesiness becomes boring.......1999-09-10

The writer attempts to write in a cutesy tone - probably in the name of being entertaining - but because he tries too hard the writing just becomes boring.

This book reads like a series of columns about data warehousing. Most of the discussions are okay but somewhat on the superficial side. The author is at his best when he discusses the people side of data warehousing - especially the political issues.

If you do not want to get deeply involved in the technical aspects of the subject, W.H. Inmon and Vidette Poe provide more easily read and more penetrating introductions to data warehousing.
