The Godfather of Tight Ends.......2004-07-24
John Mackey revolutionized how the tight end position was played and for those of us that remember his on field exploits this book fills in the holes that many may not know. But, it is a surface book that does not go deeply into any issues. You learn that he was Ernie Davis' roommate and the trauma of watching him die. 70% of the book concerns his pro career. But probably the most controversial section is about his negotiating as the President of the Players Union. Some of the tricks the owners pulled were amazing and evidently Mackey did a great job slowing their process.
Overall this is a good story of a very good man. And while it mentions all family members in a positive way, the book really doesn't delve deeply into the mind of Mackey. It's a great, short read if you like him as a football player and that was enough for me.

Book Description
What exactly is a best boy or a grip? As the credits roll at the end of every film, listing the names of all the individuals who contributed to its making, many viewers have no idea what these people do. This book reveals the mystery behind the job titles as crew members tell their stories, explaining what their jobs are, how they came to have a career in filmmaking and their many experiences both serious and comic.
The author has conducted interviews with 33 accredited members of film production crews from many different American and British films. Each interview includes a brief introduction to the person as well as their filmography. Examples of individuals interviewed include: an assistant director, a best boy, a boom operator, a foley artist, a grip, a set decorator, a storyboard artist and a wrangler.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2006-02-06
For curious moviegoers as well as film students and young professionals; and a perfect supplement for film industry career guides.
Reading the introduction, I grew suspicious that this book is going to be simplistic and amateurish. Soon I couldn't put it down. Barbara Baker's frank approach gives you a rare insight into filmmaking, with a collection of interviews with prominent crew members. Rare, because this book bridges the gap between "movie magic" and real life.
Baker makes a fine choice of keeping technical information minimal - there are hordes of other books that will teach you all about that - instead, she focuses on the personal aspect. What is it like to work at the movies?
Whether you're just curious, or seriously plan to join the industry (and I must say I belong to the latter), this book is fascinating.
Book Description
Salvos of sane and humorous dissent from the worship of the almighty market.
For a magazine dedicated to debunking the nation's business culture, the final years of the twentieth century overflowed with bounty. "It was the most spectacular outbreak of mass delirium that we are likely to see in our lifetimes," wrote the editors of The Baffler. What was for others the dawn of a "New Economy" was for The Baffler a cornucopia of absurditythe costliest political and financial hustle in living memory.
Reporting from places far from the white-hot centers of the libertarian revolution, Baffler writers were the people of whom it was fashionable to say they just don't get it. While New Democrats turned somersaults for Wall Street and economic commentary became puffery, these bold, talented, and very funny writers observed the crescendo of folly with which the century turned.
Here their best writings are selected, updated, and reaffirmed, to sharpen our wits and inoculate us against follies yet to come.

Other's have been better.......2007-05-13
I preferred "Commodify Your Dissent" from these guys.
That said, if you haven't read the former then this book may be good for you (or distasteful depending on your politcal slant).
I'd recommend the read.
They sky really did fall........2005-04-28
The wit and humor of the writers may be lost on many, their views and ideas old and cynical and their messages falling on deaf ears. Funny thing is, they know this and write anyway. The book consist of article that were written before "the bubble popped" for the new economy. They do criticize our culture and do so without flinching or holding back any idea they might have about where the American Dream is at.
I thought the book was great and although some of the writing was done so in a way some might associate with pompous and cynical attitudes, I could not help but listen to their words. They were the canaries in the coal no one listened to, who warned people, judged cultures and ask for something different. I think the book is more of a "I told you so" shot by the editors, I think it is an example that people can see disaster but do nothing to stop it. I recommend this book for anyone who lost money through internet stock, anyone who searches for "real" indie rock bands, for anyone who interested in social issues or anyone simply looking for a good read.
it takes a sick person to laugh out loud.......2004-12-30
When my husband and I recently moved cross-country, he protested me wanting to keep my old copies of The Baffler. "Come on," he cajoled, "You're never going to read those things again." I read to him aloud from this collection as we were driving to Atlanta last week, so I think my magazines are off the chopping block for awhile.
Boob Jubilee contains my all-time favorite Baffler article, "The Intern Economy and the Culture Trust." This is a must-read for all young people considering a career in the media.
A really mixed bag.......2004-01-30
This book appears to be a collection of someone's (or some committee's) favorite articles from The Baffler, a literary magazine whose main job seems to be poking jabs at our culture. The title certainly doesn't help in determining that as "Boob" itself is such a multi-use word nowadays. Furthermore, many Americans west of the Mississippi have never heard of the New Economy and could care less about about literary criticism.
I think the audience for this book is really limited and not consistent with the title or the book cover. However, once you get past the first couple of reallllly dry essays, there are some that are worthy of more attention.
fun, funny, informative.......2003-12-08
The first two chapters might turn you off, I came close to stopping my reading of the book, but was urged on by friends and it payed off. The first two chapters are rather dense and not so witty, but soon after that this book really takes off. I am not totally 100% on the unifying theme of these essays, they claim to be poking a hole in the idea of the New Economy, but they all add up to more of a poking holes in various aspects of society -- of the "hip" society.
The essays tend to have a sense of humor about them as they go about their disections of culture. A few take themselves too seriously, one about the Mississippi river is just bizarre. I don't know that there is anything particularly groundbreaking here, much of the exposed secrets of the New Economy can be summarized "rich man bad, poor man good." You'd think they could be a little more insightful than that. I am not fully with the politics of this book, but I give it its five stars for being quite readable and, in the end, making us think.

Informative and thurough. Loads of info in a good format!.......1998-06-03
This book has lots of infofmation on the game "Magic The Gathering" wich is a cool and addictive card game. This book teaches you about the game and how to build a deck from a point of veiw of a player. It gives lots of examples on how to do the things it is trying to explain. The ilustrations are very useful. I recomend this book to anyone who is wanting to learn the game, however keep in mind this game is full of rules that change the rules so dont take the info in this book as law just use it as a foundation for your rules. Happy gameing!

Good!.......1999-05-28
when I got this book, I thought it would help me learn how to play. To be honest, it was actually very helpful, except for Selene and that guy with all those notes. They were just really confusing. My friend, who is the ULTIMATE Mr. Suitcase, found that section on deck building very amusing, and we've calle dhim taht ever since. Generally a good book, but ignore Selene and that other guy with the italics (dont ask)
Excellent book, it includes many vital items........1997-05-05
If you do not have an Alpha edition instruction book than you probably haven't heard Raveeka's (sorry if i misspelled Raveeka) tale.
It has deck building strategies as well as a list of some of the cards. by John Skotnik

Customer Reviews:
I liked it.......2007-08-23
very helpful for someone who has little previous knowledge of the subject. I needed a simple lead in and this provided.
A good book.......2007-05-04
I bought this book as a reference for Stats analysis , it is good for this , dont buy if you expect to get a deep knowledge in the subject.
Excellent Reference, Not For Beginners........2007-02-09
I bought this book to help me with the statistical analyses involved with my senior dissertation at my university. I am a psychology major and I could use all the help I could get understanding the Results Sections in the literature. This book explains all kinds of statistics, including the very helpful ANOVA and regression analysis amongst many other. However, it doesn't explain very well when or why you use these statistics. They don't provide many examples of research or problems that require such analyses. This book is great for a step by step tutorial using Excel and handwriting statistics problems, and reading your data.... but unless you have an idea of what you're looking for in the first place, don't bother. I am totally ignorant to statistical analyses and coming into this book, I didn't know when to use ANCOVA or even what precisely it was demonstrating in relation to the research I am conducting... and I still only have a vague idea... Hopefully this will all be explained in course. But, this is a valued reference for all Excel users, without a doubt!!
Excellent.......2005-03-17
This book is excellent for seasoned Excel users and people who were taught (but didn't learn) statistics in your average graduate school program. I have never seen statistical concepts so briefly and at the same time well explained. Actually applying the concepts adds another level of learning. I highly recommend this book.
More Than a Simple Spread Sheet.......2005-03-05
Excel is of course first and foremost a spreadsheet. They were designed to allow you to play what if senarios. You can change this part of the budget to see what the effect is over there.
But beyond the spread sheet functionality Excel has numerous functions and capabilities to do all kinds of analysis capabilities.
This book is on using these functions to perform a whole range of statistical functions. Not only does this book cover the functions themselves, but gives the background and description of what this particular kind of function is doing. Both numerical analysis and charting functions are included and in detail.
Don't skip the part in this book called the Part of Tens. This section in the For Dummies books often has some interesting points, but here the summation of statistical limitations is just great.

New tricks for an old dog.......2004-05-20
I've been using Excel for years, but I've always been frustrated by the more advanced stuff in Excel. Things like pivot tables and pivot charts, or the super-powerful but mega-confusing VLOOKUP function. Sometimes I'd get lucky and figure out how to get one of these things to work, but most times I'd have to ask a co-worker to figure it out for me.
Now, I'm starting to be the guy that folks are coming to for help with advanced Excel stuff. This book is fantastic, and for the first time I'm starting to really use Excel for something more advanced than the Sum button!
Here's the table of contents from my copy of the book. Some of the chapters might sound intimidating, but believe me, this book is fun and easy to read:
Part I: Where's the Beef?
Chapter 1: Introducing Excel Lists.
Chapter 2: Grabbing Data from External Sources.
Chapter 3: Scrub-a-Dub-Dub: Cleaning Data.
Part II: PivotTables and PivotCharts.
Chapter 4: Working with PivotTables.
Chapter 5: Building PivotTable Formulas.
Chapter 6: Working with PivotCharts.
Chapter 7: Customizing PivotCharts.
Part III: Advanced Tools.
Chapter 8: Using the Database Functions.
Chapter 9: Using the Statistics Functions.
Chapter 10: Descriptive Statistics.
Chapter 11: Inferential Statistics.
Chapter 12: Optimization Modeling with Solver.
Part IV: The Part of Tens.
Chapter 13: Almost Ten Things You Ought to Know about Statistics.
Chapter 14: Almost Ten Tips for Presenting List Results and Analyzing Data.
Chapter 15: Ten Tips for Visually Analyzing and Presenting Data.
Part V: Appendix.
Appendix: Glossary of Data Analysis and Excel Terms.

Excel 2007 Data Analysis is Great.......2007-03-19
I really like this book. It is written in very plain and easy to follow format. Anyone with any Excel knowledge at all will find it remedial at first however once you get to the part that interests you, it's great. It is easy to follow and informative. The author also uses humor to lighten it up, tech manuals can be very dry. This one is not.
I recomend the book for anyone just starting to do analysis with Excel. You will get your money's worth and will be able to finish the book without dying from bordom.
