Book Description

I have traveled far and wide, far beyond the simple parish I envisioned as a young man. My obligation of service has led me into diverse yet interrelated roles: college teacher, theologian, president of a great university, counselor to four popes and six presidents. Excuse the list, but once called to public service, I have held fourteen presidential appointments over the years, dealing with the social issues of our times, including civil rights, peaceful uses of atomic energy, campus unrest, amnesty for Vietnam offenders, Third World development, and immigration reform. But deep beneath it all, wherever I have been, whatever I have done, I have always and everywhere considered myself essentially a priest. —from the Preface

"Father Hesburgh should be on almost everyone's list of the most influential figures in American higher education over the past few decades. In these fascinating memoirs, he chronicles the transformation of Notre Dame from a somewhat mediocre midwestern university into a major national teaching and research institution. As president of Notre Dame for 35 years, he used that position as a platform to argue the truly critical issues not only within the academy, but outside as well. The chapters on his involvement with the Civil Rights movement and criticism of early Vatican policy on academic freedom at Catholic universities are most compelling. Recommended for all readers, especially in these days of seeming cynicism and doubt." —Library Journal

"William F. Buckley might disagree, but the former university president is clear on the three most important things in life." —_New York Magazine_

"Father Hesburgh says that each one of us can do something effective in the cause of a better world. God, Country, Notre Dame itself embodies an obvious refutation of the apathetic notion that 'in the modern world one person cannot make a difference'." —Commonweal

"The temptation is to subtitle this book, 'Adventures of Superpriest.' If Father Hesburgh made it all up, it would still be a wonderful story, a compendium of what-ifs . . . its warmth and humanity are infectious, and most readers will not have the nerve to fight off the pleasure of going along." —Chicago Tribune

5 out of 5 stars Proud to be an American.......2000-11-29

I "read" this book for the first time on audio cassette and quickly ran out and bought it" Years later, I still think of it and am still amazed at what a tremendous person Father Hesburgh is. If I did not know its true, I would not believe that a person could accomplish so much in a lifetime. Knowing that this country and faith produces such great men, makes me proud to be Catholic and an American. This book would make a great, great gift!

5 out of 5 stars The Good gets Better.......2000-03-29

Product Description

Almost five decades ago, Stan and Iris Ovshinsky proposed a radical idea, the hydrogen loop, to fully utilize the benefits of hydrogen, the universes ultimate energy source. What started as this couples inspiring commitment to make the world a better place is now realized in the products and technologies offered by the company they founded Energy Conversion Devices. Stan Ovshinsky is likely to be known as the Father of the Hydrogen Economy. This is his story. The implementation of this totally clean and renewable system (the hydrogen economy) now falls to us. Will you make your roof a photovoltaic one? Have you bought a hybrid electric automobile? Will you be an early adopter of hydrogen burning internal combustion cars or fuel cell powered ones? Will you now invest in alternative energy stocks? Will you vote for politicians who promote incentives for the adoption of alternative energy technologies? Will you use hydrogen now? Hydrogen can replace anything that burns and can give us a cleaner, safer world. Remember, if you are not part of the solution then you are the problem.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First rate story about following your dreams.......2007-03-31

I picked this book up on Amazon because a friend of mine recommended it to me. I was expecting a "Rudy," type story. There were parallels to be sure, but this book was so much more than that. It is an autobiography of the ups and downs in a four year premier Division I program. The book is a quick read and I didn't want it to end. I found myself cheering for Timmy O'Neill that his hard work would finally pay off. And by the end of the book, you are right there with him as he starts to realize some of the fruits of his labor. Overall, a very enjoyable and well written book. Would recommend very highly, especially to anyone who has ever been told that they couldn't do something.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless Penmanship.......2007-02-07

This book is the Caddilac of Notre Dame walk-on books. From page one to the end, the book is filled with excitement, laughter, and tears of joy. Not only do I recommend this book to children of all ages, I encourage this to middle-aged people as well that are looking to get over the 'hump'. I read this book 6 times and I'm still determined to make the team as a walk-on. I will write Timmy O'neill's name in for the next presidential election.

5 out of 5 stars Perception is almost never reality.......2006-12-20

I bought and read this book after I found this under a "football search" on Amazon. I was looking for a good book for my nephew. Having been a former college running back myself at 5'9" 195lbs, I continually broke stereotypes as Timmy has done in this book. How many times do you hear a sport commentator say something like, "even though he's 5 foot something, he an incredibly gifted runner" It never made sense, because what better height to be as a running back--low to the ground--than 5 foot something!..I never found any advantage to being a taller running back unless you're blowing open holes with your blocking...look at the best, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, etc. Every Play Every Day is about breaking perceptions and beleiving in yourself, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and passed it along to my nephew who loved it as well!

4 out of 5 stars Great Story, Easy Read.......2006-11-28

Tim is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. As a freshman I was fortunate enough to live across from Tim and his roommate, Murph. They were the older brothers I never had. The book is a testament to hard work and determination. I read the book over the Thanksgiving holiday, I recommend the book to all sports fans. Tim is the real deal, I hope someone puts his ND and high school highlight tapes up on youTube.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational story. I got the book for my players.......2006-11-16

I'm a high school football coach and I ordered this book for my football team to give to them at their end of the year banquet. They didn't have a very good season, so I thought this book might help. The amount of feedback I've gotten on the book has been amazing. This book really shows what can happen when you set a goal and go after it. It really has a strong message about not being discouraged in the face of adversity and that's why I thought it would be good for the players. I'm really glad I got it. Hopefully next season we'll win more games!

Book Description

The most versatile and highly respected academic leader in the United States, Father Theodore Hesburgh was known for his rare energy and ability to carry out a staggering variety of assignments with distinction. He combined an exceptional blend and balance of qualities-intellect, character, personality, spirituality, and management skill. A man of enormous good will, he tried to embody the compassion of Christ.

During his career as president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987, enrollment doubled, the endowment grew from $9 million to $350 million, and the number of buildings on campus increased from 48 to 88. At the time of his retirement, his signature was on the degrees of four out of five living Notre Dame graduates.

While transforming Notre Dame into a great university, he transformed himself into a national figure with influence far beyond his campus. He was tapped for service by every American president since Eisenhower and by three popes. His fifteen Presidential appointments involved him in almost all the major social issues, and for fifteen years he served on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.

This book examines Fr. Hesburgh's personality, leadership qualities, management strategies, and central role as a priest. It chronicles his prominent position in advancing civil rights and explores his relationship with famous people, among them John and Robert Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Pope Paul VI. Finally, the biography investigates unfamiliar aspects of his life: his relationship with women and his six "adopted" children, his attitude toward Notre Dame's high profile football program, and his sometimes controversial views on the Vatican, celibacy, birth control, abortion, and homosexuality.

      Book Description

Priest, educator, and public servant, Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, is internationally recognized as one of the most influential leaders of the American Catholic Church not only because of his commitment to Catholic education but also because of his passion for ensuring the protection and preservation of human rights everywhere. The present volume consists of a biography of Father Hesburgh; a detailed and comprehensive description of archival and manuscript materials held in The Archives of the University of Notre Dame, the official repository of Father Hesburgh's papers, prepared by William Kevin Cawley; and a bibliography of major published and unpublished works by Father Hesburgh, as well as selected works about him. Making a selection from the wealth of material contained in The Archives and other sources, compiler Charlotte A. Ames has created an invaluable bridge to Father Hesburgh's life and work. Much of this work was written as a response to the various challenges posed by national and global crises: the civil rights movement, starving millions worldwide, refugees in need of resettlement, the specter of nuclear war, the need to find peaceful uses for nuclear power, the most productive use of science and technology for Third World development, and the need for quality and equality in higher education. The bibliographical section includes works issued from 1940 through February 1989. Published works include books, articles and essays, forewords, prefaces and introductions, newspaper articles, interviews, selected U.S. government documents, and non-print media. Among the unpublished works are addresses, papers, speeches, and diaries. Works about Father Hesburgh consist not only of books, articles, and newspaper articles, both biographical and reportorial, but also of theses and dissertations relating to him. The volume is arranged to provide easy access, with citations for selected works to be found in three distinct locations at the University of Notre Dame. Three appendices cite awards and honors, honorary degrees, and current and past board and committee memberships held by Father Hesburgh. A useful resource for students and scholars of Education, American Studies, and American Religious History.

Golf course architect Stanley Thompson was a genius. Shortly after his death, the Ottawa Citizen wrote of him: He left his mark on the Canadian landscape from coast to coast. No man could ask for a more handsome set of memorials. Jim Barclay has now written this definitive account of Stanley Thompsons careera career that in some ways is stranger than fiction, but was immensely contributive to the creation of the playing fields of golf. Known as the Toronto Terror, Stanley was not without his faults, but certainly no one can deny that he was one of the most colourful figures in the history of course design, a profession that is not immune to flamboyance.

            Book Description

This is a new book, the first to identify current issues in the study of leisure that are raised by the profound changes and conflicts in American and world societies entering the 21st century. Each chapter includes two sides of at least one critical debate designed to engage students in analysis and discussion. The book focuses on personal and social questions and meanings rather than dry summaries. The underlying theme is that leisure is a realm of conflict: there is the complex composition of society with contested opportunities and interests related to gender, class, race, and ethnicity. There are political and economic issues of the allocation of resources, environmental conflict, new work roles, and differential power. There are personal issues: leisure as challenge and consumption, development, and entertainment. There is the other side of leisure with everything for sale. There are the diverse symbolic meanings of leisure in a market culture. Major forms of leisure are explored including tourism, sport, mass media, the arts, and outdoor recreation. This book offers an exciting introduction to leisure in the new millennium. For anyone interested

1 out of 5 stars The worst of the worst.......2004-02-10

3rd party D20 stuff has never impressed me anyway, but seeing this abomination sinks the industry to a new low. The first one was a bad enough book, but the sequel...let's just put it at PAINFUL. Avoid this book like the plague and maybe we can start to show 3rd party developers that they're going to have to come up with better material than say "The Ultimate Quintessential Legendary Tome to Female Half-Dwarven Half-Thri-Kreen Ninja Paladins"

1 out of 5 stars More trash from Fast Forward. (Warning: A heated Review!).......2004-02-07

Is there justice in this world? How can ANYONE let those fools at Fast Forward games near a d20 again? This book, much like it's predecessor, is a piece of garbage.

Why? All the monsters, sorry 'demons and devils', are EXACTLY like each other. The writers managed to scrape up a few more peasant-scaring beasts for us to hate...

And lets take on the description. Best in the industry? These people are possibly the WORST writers I have ever had the misfortune to read. No, Monte Cook and Skip Williams are the best. Not some pathetic third-party company wasting paper! Acclaimed? Who the heck are you asking? No gamer I met would even touch the books with a ten-foot halberd! How can someone 'loath a beastie' when the thing is so horribly unbalanced it can't attack with out the DM having to fudge a die roll. Everything gamers could've asked for? Who the heck are you talking to? The gaming club for the blind and midly retarted?

              1 out of 5 stars Poorest d20 supplement EVER.......2006-01-18

I won't spend time analyzing the book's artwork or theme. The one and only thing that struck me about it was the horrible, horrible quality of the information. The creature statistics are riddled with so many mistakes as to be completely unusable. It is as though the makers had never played a game of D&D, much less had a clue about such things as size bonuses to armor class, proper CR calculation, etc. I found one creature within that I liked, but had to take a pencil and heavily correct the stats for it to be usable. I was going to burn the book, but a friend of mine talked me into giving it to him instead. I regret not giving it the end it deserved.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality book.......2004-02-02

First off, let me say that I was very excited when I first heard of this sourcebook...

I was very, very wrong. This book is unprofessional, dull, and poorly written. It has terrible art, possibly the worst I have ever seen in a sourcebook, in black and white (most of it derived from other sources, looking like cave paintings). The monsters in this book are unbalanced, obviously not playtested. The sourcebook has creatures pulled from all sorts of mythological sources, managing to find all the ones that resemble each other, and even trying to replace their monsters with the ones in Monster Manual (such as the Rakshasa) About half of the book has creatures that look, and are written as, just about the same monster. Think of them as fillers. As I previously stated, it has only mythological creatures, and doesn't even bother to change the flavor text to match normal fantasy. The writers ignored the feel of real fantasy and decided to make the "demons" and "devils" peasant scaring myth rip-offs.

All in all, this is the WORST d20 supplement I have EVER bought. Every part of it is terrible, from the art to the writing. Save your money, please.

4 out of 5 stars Demons & Devils vol 1.......2002-10-25

This book is fascinating both from a D&D viewpoint and on its own. Unlike other monster collections, every demon and devil in this book is based on a creature of mythology. To quote from the preface: "Remember that for every demon or devil presented here, someone, somewhere once regarded them as absolutely real. They have been feared by living, breathing human beings. Some are probably still feared by someone, somewhere." Certainly they have been adapted, but the few I am familiar with appear to be true to the original material. Thus, many creatures that would probably never have been thought of by gamers (e.g. household demons) are here as well as demi-god level critters.

Now the downside. Many gamers aren't really interested in creatures that affect the day to day lives of the peasants. The material tends to be a little haphazard and not extremely well integrated - remember that it is coming from a whole lot of different cultures. Lastly, some Christians won't like adaptations of their pet demons.

The only other comment I would make is that I, personally, thought the art work was not especially good. While this doesn't matter very much to me others might be more critical.

Overall, this is a very good work and the base material is far more varied than any work of pure imagination I have currently seen out there for the D&D / D20 world.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way To Learn Photoshop.......2007-05-07

One summer, I audited a graphic design course with absolutely no graphic design background. Completely unfamiliar with Adobe Photoshop, I purchased this book, hoping that I would be able to learn something about the program.

I learned so much more than I ever expected to from this book. The colorful pages and the engaging tone of the author makes this book a great tool. I consider myself 100% competent with Photoshop after reading this book cover to cover. But there is nothing in this book that makes that necessary - other than the fact that it is that interesting. It starts out with the most basic concepts, and slowly details all the ropes of the program.

Three years later, I always refer back to this book (as it is well organized and descriptive). I have also gone on to purchase numerous other books in the series as a result of my positive experience with this one. I highly recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money and use your user manual........2007-01-28

This book is good for beginners I guess, and teaches you noting else but the basics. I think the manual that comes with your software gives you as much. A big let down. It should be named "how to start with photoshop and nothing else." It shows you couple of tricks at the end of the book but no explanations, tools used nor process but vage descriptions. Like that is a secret you'll find in a book named "How to do Everything with photoshop CS2." Save your money and just play with photoshop without this book. You'll speed you learning.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-12-25

I know a little more about Photoshop than they average Joe. But after reading this book, I feel like a begginer. There are so many things in here that are new to me that I wish I had this book sooner. I found Colin because he donates his time to several websites, not his own, and gives tips. He really does not need to do this. All he has to do is sell his book. The only reason I did not give him 5 stars is because he really needed to include a disk that had the examples and pictures he uses as examples. But even without those, this is a very good book to learn Photoshop with.

3 out of 5 stars Using the images the book uses.......2006-03-16

I think this book has excellent details and instructions for learning Photoshop, but the one thing it doesn't have is a disc or website listed to download the images used in the examples. It is harder to learn the steps when you don't have the images the book uses, so I only give it three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Everything?? Why yes, everything!!.......2006-02-05

I usually get skeptical when I see titles promising everything, but this book delivers!
Colin has hit on each detail of Photoshop CS2.
I've been using Photoshop since v2.0 and it wasn't until now, I realized that I've been doing things the hard way. Colin's explanations of tools like History Brush and Art History Brush will make my day to day work much easier and make me more efficient. Chapter 5 Advanced Layer Techniques and Chapter 6 Demystifying Channels are two must reads. I found myself really exploring the possibilities after reading these chapters. It was like having the same energy as when a child gets a new toy for Christmas.
The book is layed out in a logical format and it's an easy read for any experience level designer, with step by step descriptions and nice graphics and screenshots.
The bonus section with a behind the scenes look into techniques from other pros is a great inspiration to all designers.
I recommend this book as a great addition to any Photoshop users library. There's something for everyone in this book.
