Book Description
Howard Wesley Johnson has been associated with MIT for more than forty years and been a major influence on the modernization and expansion of many of its programs. He will be most remembered as a management educator and as MIT's president during the turbulent late 1960s and early 1970s. The title of his memoirs reflects his central, usually lonely position in those days, trying to hold together an institution often torn apart by the turmoil of the times.
Johnson was more successful at navigating the minefields on campus than were many other college and university presidents, perhaps because he was always willing to listen to both sides and because his values were in the right place--against the war in Vietnam, in favor of increased participation in the university by women and minorities, and concerned about environmental issues.
As a professor and administrator at MIT, a corporate director, and an advisor to American government agencies and to museums and foundations, Johnson consistently sought both to understand and to apply the principles of good management.

I attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from September 1964 through June 1972; I worked at the MIT Lincoln Laboratories in the summers of 1968 and 1970. I was given this book by the MIT Alumni Association, and found it to be remarkable in its truthful rendition of events that I lived through, and things that came afterwards (going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the 1990s), and seeing that Howard Johnson guided MIT through the late 1960s and beyond and the Museum of Fine Arts into a rebirth, and made it all look so easy. I look forward to the video that should accompany this!

Ordered this book. It is a beautiful table top book that did not come with the cover. I thought this was pretty major. The inside of the book is extraordinary. All golfers in my home really loved it.

There are few things as comforting to the Northeast golfer, sitting at home in a comfortable chair with a strong fire, as a good (no, make that great) golf book.
Robert Sidorsky has fashioned together some of golf's best writing on its best subjects (the game's character, it's past and present history, it's greatest venues and it's finest moments). The illustrations and photos are wonderful eye candy that accompany excellent writing by the likes of Wind, Keeler, Updike, Nash. Jenkins, and Murray. This book is genuinely enjoyable to any golfer, regardless of the degree of their addiction.

Excellent book for the goaltending enthusiast!'.......1999-12-11
Those of us who play goal know what unique characters we are. This book highlights all the greats from the early days of the sport up to now. Pictures galore. Spreads of early equipment. Full head shots of masks, old and new. Profiles of many of the greats to ever play the position. The innovators and the champions. A well rounded history of the insanely brave men who guard the cages. I reccomend it to all into the sport or the position.
Great book for anyone interested in goaltending.......1998-05-02
This is a fabulous and very detailed book about the history of goaltending. The book spans from the very first goaltenders all the way to today's goalies. The book has many great pictures along with stories and interesting facts. The book got me interested right away. It shows pictures all the way from before the 1900's and up to today. Famous goalies such as, Jaques Plante, Terry Sawchuck, and many others. I highly recoment this book for just about anyone. This would be a fabulous book for any goaltender currently playing on a team. The book is so well done and easy to read and follow it really brings you into the time of the earlier goaltenders. Just overall...a great book

The ideal gift for the man who appreciates both beautiful books and beautiful blondes. Indeed, men and women alike will appreciate this exceptional effort from the charming Mr. Conrad, who has somehow managed to imbue his book with a magical feeling of blondness. Strongly recommended, despite a few errors. For example, Sam Brody was a passenger, not the driver, in the car accident that killed Jayne Mansfield. Also, BC III could have done without including people like Princess Diana, Drew Barrymore and, especially, Madonna. But you can't go wrong with a book that has Veronica Lake on the front cover and Kim Novak's back on the back.

Xie Jun's meteoric rise to stardom is virtually unprecedented in chess history. Born in 1970, in 1988 she was just a promising junior who had never even seen a Grandmaster, let alone beaten one. Yet in 1991 she became Women's World Champion by decisively beating Maya Chiburdanidze, Champion since 1978.
This book provides a fascinating and frequently amusing look at the chess world through the eyes of a young Chinese woman, as she describes her unique life and career to date.
Since she came to (western) chess via the highly tactical Chinese form of the game, it is no surprise that Xie Jun's style of play is extremely aggressive in nature. Her success shows that direct attacking play can be extremely effective in practice, and the reader is invited to sharpen his or her own skills by studying the 40 deeply annotated games and 12 puzzle positions in this book.

Mikhail Tal's chess and life in Chinese!!!.......2004-06-09
It's an amazing book. An instructional book and a fairy tale (Cinderella). A book about chess and about the development of a young chess GM. For a young chess federation (Chinese), to produce a young talented player to win the World Title (thanks to chairman Mao... ;-) ) is something for us to learn.
I haven't looked carefully into the game annotations yet, however with some lessons drawn from them, it's worth at least 2 stars(!); then the stories make up 3 points; this concludes perfect 5 points.
This is similar to Tal's book, except Tal's covers almost complete "the chess and life of Tal"; here the young (but no less admirable) Xie Jun just barely covers 1/3 of her life.
There are many "good" points in here book:
1) Her modesty: lots of drawn and lost games which provide reader some experience.
2) Respectivity: her respect to the former champions and veterans, Spassky, Taimanov, Larsen, Smyslov... are noticeable; also her respect for her match opponents.
3) Honesty: I could count at least 100 times she uses the word "lucky"'s in her book. Her honesty and modesty are exceptional. When I read the part about her loss to Zsuzsa, I thought she just wrote it to smooth out her defeat. But after reading her comments on the games with Gaprindashvili, Ioseliani, Chiburdanidze, Akhsharumora, etc... I felt she is believable and genuine.
4) Will: she often mentions about learning from the GM, veterans, from expereince, trying to improve... She's already in the "male" GM rank at the time!
There are more, but these are the highlights after reading only the stories in one day.
PS: When I saw the book's price at 11.50 USD on-line, I thought it was too high. The used book is about 8.00 or so. Then I found out at Borders the special order is 22.95, (It's actually the price tag on the book.), I hurried to order one copy on-line immediately. I guess it is all of supply-and-demand. Not many people prefer non-Western writers, especially about (international, to distinct from the Chinese) chess. At less than 1/2 of listed price tag, we have a good deal here. If you like Tal's, you will like Xie Jun. And she has many more years to come; and wish her all success.
An exellent book.......2001-01-19
In addition to a plenty of good games against some top players, the four-time Woman World Chess Champion provides us a lot of interesting information about her life. The games are illustrated in a very clear and objective way which makes this book an ideal choice for readers with an average chess level.

Well written and easy to understand Guide. Fairly basic in some spots for experienced communications folks but excellent book for starters in this field.

I just passed the CCDA Exam in April 2007. This book covers everything you need to pass the 640-861 exam. But be careful, Cisco just updated the CCDA exam, and the old 640-861 can only be taken until July 2007.
As additional study material I highly recommend the CCDA/CCNP flash cards, and the Boson ExSim CCDA exam pack #1.
Excellent Resource and Helpful to Passing CCDA.......2007-01-11
I currently hold a CCNP and CCDP. I actually had to go back this past December and pass the CCDA exam so I could get the CCDP. I picked up this book to help pass the test and it was outstanding. When I study for certifications, my goal is to learn the material and the certification is a nice bonus/reward for learning the material. The author is extremely efficient, skillful and thorough in conveying the subject matter. For anyone doing individual consulting and wanting to understand the way to do this in an orderly and professional manner, this book will prove very useful in that area. On the technical aspect, the author is outstanding and for those that want an intro in VoIP, you will find her chapter on this very useful. When all is said and done, it helped me to pass the test, but most important, I learned a lot from reading through the book.
Thorough coverage of all exam topics!.......2005-08-23
I've just passed the CCDA exam with this book as my primary resource. The book is fully packed with information so that every sentence has to be read thoroughly in order to avoid overlooking some important facts. The author's style of writing is a little dry, so are the topics itself. Fortunately the are many case studies that will help you to apply the theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios which is vital for passing the exam.
Even though this book covers everything I would not recommend using it as your only resource. It will leave you alone with this overwhelming density of information and avoids giving some advice which topics are important in order to pass the exam. Titles like "CCDA/CCDP Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack" or "Top-Down Network design" will help you in getting the "big picture" and serve as final exam prepartion tools.
Impressive! Highly recommend.......2005-04-11
This book has very useful and detailed information that is hard to find elsewhere. Considering its size, the book is very well edited... I only recall seeing one typo but there were definitely not the usual amount of errors I find in other technical books. The book answered many questions I had about designing networks. I now understand what a good and bad design is and was actually able to apply what I learned in a real situation.
Not only has the book allowed me to pass the exam on my first try, I also feel like it would also be useful for anyone else who needs to design Cisco networks without necessarily wanting the certification.
The tons of questions and answers at the end of each chapter really help retaining the information and were a big help for the exam. The case studies are great too.
