Great resource!!.......2001-02-01

I was recently doing a school report on cathedrals in france and i came acrosss this little gem. It is packed with information on both romanesque and gothic architectural styles and is not only educational but also very intriguing. After doing my report, i continued to read this book and to learn more about architecture. I reccomend this book because it is both informative and well written.

Author of three previous golf books and script editor for Seve's video, The Short Game, Robert Green was editor of Golf World (UK) from 1988 to 1995 and is a contributing editor to Golf Digest in the United States.  He has been the recipient of three British Sports Journalism Awards. He has
played at more than 320 different courses on five continents, and to show for all that experience he once won a golf writers' tournament.

One of the world's foremost golf photographers, Dave Cannon joined Allsport in 1983 and became a director of the company in 1987. Clear Illustrations, and explanations for all shots.......2001-07-11

As I have learned the fundamentals of the golf swing this past year, I wanted to move beyond that so that I can really continue cutting away at my handicap. (I am shooting 100 basically). I first got Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible for pitching and chipping. However, that book tried to cover so much of the game that it failed to address in more detail issues such as uphill, sidehill, and downhill lies. Seve's Troubleshooting book really covers it throughly. He describes how the stance and swingpath differs in uphill/downhill lies to that of the normal swing. He also talks about club selection, and how to maintain balance throughout the swing. Other shots covered: Sand, rough, water, cut lob. The book is beautifully illustrated with the Master of Golf-Escapade in various captions throughout the swing. With this, now I will feel confident when facing a shot with a difficult lie.

Good Read, But..........2006-05-16

Great bathroom book!!!

Short, quick reads...Vignette after vignette about golf and golfers, some great and memorable, some good and some average---but all worth reading for those who play, enjoy, appreciate, respect and follow the game of golf.

Good gift book for a golfer or one who enjoys golf.

One Suggestion, however: This is but one of eight such books, beginning with "And Then Jack Told Arnie..." You might want to consider getting "Talking on Tour" by the same author. It is an anthology, the best of the best.

Summing up, a few birdies, some pars, and a bogey or two but an interesting read nonetheless. Go for it!!! (But consider the Anthology first!!!)

The roots of modern conservatism as an intellectual and political movement have been explored extensively by a variety of writers, but almost all attention has been focused on ideas and events following the Second World War. Editor Robert M. Crunden seeks to go deeper, in this anthology of prewar material. He brings together a group of authors bound by what one of them calls a concern over "the spiritual disorder of modern life--its destruction of human integrity and its lack of purpose." Contributors include academics, polemicists, and journalists: Irving Babbit, Walter Lippmann, H.L. Mencken, Albert Jay Nock, John Crowe Ransom, George Santayana, Allen Tate, and others. These "superfluous men" (the odd term is derived from Nock's influential book Memoirs of a Superfluous Man) did not consider themselves part of an inchoate conservatism, although a number of them were allied in the New Humanist and Southern agrarian movements. And although they write from decades long past, their voices rarely seem distant. Here is Donald Davidson with an antimaterialist critique of industrial progress (as personified by Henry Ford) that could apply to the roaring economy at the turn of the 21st century:

[The masses] must spend and spend unceasingly, in order to consume the never-ending stream of new products that industry hurls upon them. They will be encouraged to make a necessity of every luxury that the clever industrialists may devise. For the industry of the Ford type has not regard for actual or fundamental needs! Very Useful Book.......2007-02-10

This book was a great starting point for learning how to develop Eclipse plug-ins; it has now become a great reference. The book starts very simple and moves into more complex topics that are taught around non-trivial examples. I have the first edition, which is a bit dated now, though still a useful reference and starting point.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to start writing Eclipse plug-ins.

The Eclipse Plugin Bible.......2007-01-09

If you are really intending to write commercial quality plugins for Eclipse or any RCP based application you will want this book.
This is more than a compilation of the online tutorials.
Very detailed and covers all the relevant issues.
Pretty readable as well.
I generally hate tutorials, but these are info dense enough and realistic enough to not make me pull my hair out.
The book also works pretty well as a reference for the more advanced material.

While whole book has enough details on plugins UI part, there is no information on third-party integration and plugin class loading issue is not covered enough (authors offer you to write your own jar class loader). Also missed a sample on PreferenceManager usage.

Not what I wanted..........2006-05-07

I suppose this is more of a praise of Eclipse plug-in architecture and available documentation than a review of the book per se, but I did not get from Eclipse: Building Commercial-Quality Plug-ins anything I could not by scanning online docs and playing with Eclipse myself. I was up and running with my plug-in project in a very short time without opening this book,
and once I did, I did not find anything eye-opening...

It may be easy to say that many such books are just a rehash of the wealth of online information already freely available, but sometimes the books do have added value, say, by presenting the material for faster learning and/or reference. In this case, there can be no such added advantage - again, because the Eclipse project's own design and documentation is very clear and thorough...

I realized all that before getting the book; in buying it, I was looking for another advantage - hidden tips and tricks, kind of like Covert Java. For example, how do I debug a plug-in project that depends on a non-plugin one?

No such luck.

I'll be returning this book to the store now, and maybe trying to see if Contributing to Eclipse: Principles, Patterns, and Plugins is closer to what I want...
