This is the book that opened Montessori's theories and achievements to me in a way her own writing never managed to. The Standings are not unbiased, having worked with Dr. Montessori --- but they do an excellent job of weaving Montessori's life story with her teaching discoveries and methods.
If someone is interested in learning about the Montessori method, and can only read one book, this is the one.
There is another biography by Rita Kramer that looks good, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Good luck!

One of Golf's Great Ambassadors.......2001-06-25
This is such an enjoyable read, which reads much like what one would think after hearing Gene do the color on Shell's Wonderful World of Golf.
There is just one delightful story after another about Sarazen's life in golf, which began as many others did of his day in caddying. He didn't come from country club family. Italian immigrants, he changed his name"Saraceni" eventually to Sarazen. Great story about initial caddy experience, where he didn't even know about the tee (which the caddy was supposed to take care of.)
From his infamous double eage at Augusta to his touching story with the elderly caddy Daniels and their win at The British, this book is jammed packed with golf told through the eyes of a man who played alongside the like of Vardon, Cotton, Armour, Snead, Hogan and Hagen, among others.
What a fascinating insight into not only this wonderful champion and his life and development, but the development of the game so many of us receive such great enjoyment from ourselves.
Golfing lost a true champion when Gene departed several years ago. Classy man.

It could have been a contender!.......2002-02-12
Having used the Bond films, especially Goldfinger, in the classroom and written articles about 007 I was sadly let down by this book. While it begins with a very clever parody of a James Bond type story and contains many interesting interviews, there are many glaring errors. Sean Connery does not dislike having done this work, at least not as much as is implied, and some of his closest friends are associated with the Bond films he starred in. The information on Ian Fleming relied too much on John Pearson while seeming to ignore other biographers. There were some errors that made you suspect that the author has never seen the movies he talked about. For example, in covering the two Flint movies Lee J. Cobb is identified as the arch villain rather than the equivalent of M to Derek Flint. (It is a shame that master novelist John Gardner, who penned many Bond books, was not consulted as I have had this wonderful opportunity and learned more from him in ten minutes than from this book.) I have also met and talked with a couple of the stars of this film in the past so I do know something about it. New facts were brought out through the interviews so I am glad that I read the book. I do wish that the author had a better understanding of American culture and fandom as that may have eliminated some of the elitism that this reader senses. The book was a great idea, it will be a part of my Bond library, but not one that I will refer to very often. I really wish that it could have been better as I consider Goldfinger one of the great films of the 20th century.
Indispensable Book on GOLDFINGER.......2001-05-18
This book has been exhaustively researched and it shows. This must have been a real labor of love for the author, Adrian Turner. This is the one film that really spawned the world of James Bond to the general public. It left an endearing quality on many of us and this book is a tribute to that whole unforgettable era.

Frank Scoblete's new book is just so much fun to read! He has compiled the greatest record wins and losses of the great gambelrs and told their stories with great humor. There are excellent strategies in the book and all of them can be learned like the title says in 10 minutes or less. I loved his history of casino gambling too. This is a must-read gambling book.

Good book but, had some problems!.......2006-11-05
I gave this book a 3 star rating because; I had some problems with it.
Some of the problems I found were in:
Tutorial 5 on Frames, the lesson was too vague to apply to the teacher's assignment to do our own frameset.
Tutorial 6 on Forms, the lesson was so difficult to get through, my teacher needed to verify the code order using the teacher's version.
Even though parts of this book were helpful, I would search for other options.

Excellent Book for Novices - Hands On Learning.......2006-10-31
We used this textbook for our first Web Development Class at College and I found it to be very good. I liked doing the tutorials as I read the chapter, and the cases were challenging (but not impossible). The cases are well thought-out and utilize the basics learned in the chapter. It also builds on the previous knowledge. This book would also be appropriate for a high school student -- or anyone who wants to learn a the basics of HTML. I will note that some of the syntax and tags they use are deprecated, but it is pretty current in this fast paced cyber world.
Very good book for a start to learning Web Design.......2006-09-08
I found this book to be well written as a relative HTML novice and it was comprehensive enough (hence the title) in scope. I thought the projects and exercises were all well thought out. I especially appreciated that they gave a layout reference for all coding during the tutorials to make sure it was written and placed properly. They even gave a set of review-question answers keys at the end of each chapter which was useful for double checking your knowledge.
I would recommend this to anyone thinking of getting into Web Design.

The tutorial sections were easy to follow, but the case problems were sometimes hard to understand.

Not much to say, I needed this book for an HTML class that I am taking. That being said it is a good book for beginers, if one runs through the tutorials one should be able to build a web page.

When I through the first few chapters, I liked the book already. First it emphasize that the book only covers coding on Notepad or other text editors. I think that is the best way to learn the language. It doesn't need any HTML editors to do the job. It describes the history of internet and its technologies in some of the chapters. It covers the javascript concepts clearly and shows how things are done, step by step. At the end of each chapter, there are some assignments to enhance understanding. There are hints on how these assignments should be done, step by step also. Sometimes even with the hints, they are not easy to perform, especially for DHTML/Javascript, in many cases, I have to go back to the chapter and re-examine the reasons for writing certain functions, when to call the functions and so forth. This book is suitable for beginners with no HTML knowledge and don't want to code with HTML editors. Thankfully, there are some appendices to the tags used for XHTML, and examined the browser compatibilities also. I print out these appendices to allow me to summarise the book and to carry along. As with most books, this book also contain some errors especially with the answers provided, but it is of little problem if you went through the book thoroughly, you can spot them quite easily. There is another book, "New perspectives on Javascript" by the same author which covers mostly Javascript is not so good value, as a lot of Javascript stuff in that book is already covered here. For more seasoned HTML coders, this book is not so suitable, but if you want to learn new ways of coding to comply with new XHTML standards, you should give this book a look.

An obvious retrofit.......2007-05-19
What originally attracted me to this text was that the code examples use valid XHTML. Unfortunately, the book is obviously a rewrite of an older book written with 1995-era design and structure approaches. Formatting attributes within the HTML tags have merely been replaced by inline styles, defeating the purpose of having a style sheet in the first place. Not until Tutorial 7 is there an external style sheet. There is even a chapter on how to design a site with tables; i.e., the old school way, and one can sense the author's comfort throughout that chapter. While it's good to be familiar with that approach, since one will run into such sites and have to work with them, to have such a large portion of the text devoted to it seems inappropriate in 2006 (this edition's printing). When HTML elements are employed in a modern fashion, there is some faltering, such as the label tag for an input element being followed by a break tag instead of setting its display property to block in the stylesheet, thus requiring as many break tags as there are labels. And as with many of the Course Technology books, the page numbers restart with each major section: the HTML section ends at HTML 578, then there are some additional cases (HTML ADD 1, HTML ADD 2, etc), then XML ends at XML 224, then there are appendices HTML A1 through HTML J16, then an XML appendix, then Ref 1 through 27 (reference section). At least the index indicates both the HTML and XML sections. One could complete this very thick book and be an expert at creating web sites the way we used to do it in the mid-nineties, the only enhancement being that the sites would be valid. I do think that many of the exercises could be reworked to be quite valuable, and I should mention that much of the instructional text is well done. The book is printed on very thin paper, as are many of the Course textbooks, but there is color throughout. I would not recommend this text to anyone considering adopting it as a class text.
Excellent HTML etc Textbook.......2006-10-29
One of the best books on the subject I've encountered in the last thirteen years of working with the internet. The tutorials are excellent - in that they appeared to be well debugged prior to publication. They do an excellent job in preparing a student for any of the four cases found at the end of each section. The only weakness encountered was that there was no comprehensive reference table of tags and associated attributes.
