Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother, Michael Landon fans........2006-07-22

As a Michael Landon fan, I was totally disappointed in this book. Cheryl is riding on her father's name here. Her philosophy in this book has nothing to do with Michael Landon's legacy. After all the research I've done on him, I think he'd be disappointed with her far-fetched ideas. If this is the way she wants to live and believe, fine: If she wants to write a book about it, fine. But don't attribute it to Michael.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Landonýs Legacy.......2003-05-05

Cheryl Landon has endured tremendous amounts of physical and mental pain. She struggled through many of those years of pain with the help of her beloved stepfather, Michael Landon. When he lay dying of cancer, Cheryl promised him and God "to honor and protect his name and to continue his legacy-his work to secure a healthy future generation."

Michael Landon's Legacy is the fulfillment of that promise. But it's more than just a tribute to a man who gave a child unconditional love at a time when she most needed it. As Cheryl grew and learned, she discovered what she calls "7 Keys to Supercharging Your Life," based primarily on her observations of how Michael lived. The keys are simple: "Trust in God; Choose love over fear; Believe that daily miracles do occur; Take action now; Believe in truth between people; Build bridges; and Don't judge each other." She illustrates each key with personal stories from both their lives.

Cheryl Landon is now an internationally known speaker, writer, and teacher. Her message is always "create a healthier and safer world for our children." Like her famous stepfather, she believes in the power of love and that God resides in all humans. She seeks to help people focus on that love rather than on fear. She uses Michael Landon as an example-an abused child, he became a loving adult dedicated to doing good for others.

She has devoted her life's work to handing down "to our future generation a world where dreams to come true; a world filled with hope, unity and love; a world in which we do truly love one another." She uses intensely personal experiences from her life to teach others how to replace hate and anger with love, and to show how love continues even after death. Readers wanting to change their own lives will discover inspirational and powerful guidance in Michael Landon's Legacy.

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate drills for champions.......2007-01-04

Even if you, like me, don't intend to be a champion pro (maybe an Am champion...?), these drills will improve your game for sure. Anyway they are the pro's drills. I've checked many other sources in books and DVDs and these are the most common drills advised to golf players. And no other source were so complete. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 becouse there are only drills. It could be completed with a swing overview, in order to make the drills more understandable. It's not there becouse the author has another book only on the 8 parts of the swing. But it worths the price.

5 out of 5 stars GOLF DIGEST'S ULTIMATE DRILL BOOK.......2005-09-29

AS HE ALWAYS DOES JIM MCLEAN DEMONSTRATES THAT HE KNOWS GOLF. HE KNOWS HOW TO FIX DEFICIENT GOLF SWINGS. THE DRILLS HE OFFERS MUST BE A BENEFIT TO EVERY GOLFER, BEGINNER AND PROFESSIONAL. BUY THIS BOOK AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible for golfers who know the game.......2005-09-21

This book is for the real beginner as the title of the book is totally misleading

2 out of 5 stars So So.......2005-09-16

Just an ok book. Pictures are low quality. Would have expected better from Golf Digest and Jim Mclean. It is straight and to the point but make sure you at least have a solid working knowldge of all aspects of the game before considering this book. You can get much of the same information for free at various golf web sites. Not bad but not very clear in many regards.

5 out of 5 stars 120 Drills to Specifically Targeted to Swing Improve.......2004-09-06

One of golf's great teachers provides 120 of his best drills for all aspects of the game: driving, chipping, iron shots, putts, sand, as well as warmup and mental focus.

Each is accompanied by excellent two page format showing: problem, result, goal and practice procedure, with an accompanying photo.

There are just some exellent drills here for what ails you. For me there are some ten or so already that have helped. Check this one out, especially if you are the skilled player who already has a pretty solid idea of your problems. This is some good stuff for those as well as some basic good drills for all golfers.

2 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2007-01-08

This is a well-written, attractive pamphlet. It contains a handful of decent "insider" tips (such as the names of caddies to request and flight info from Portland or Eugene)and excellent interviews with Kidd, Doak and Coore that I hadn't seen. But it is for those who don't have access to the internet. It is a brochure for the resort. One would be better off buying Stephen Goodwin's Dream Golf, the same price I hasten to add, and reading the numerous pieces available on the web. While I applaud the work of the Golf odyssey/insider folks, I would only recommend Planning the Ultimate Bandon Dunes Golf Vacation as a place to start one's research. Buy it if you're a fanatic like myself, but then move on to Dream Golf and internet research.

5 out of 5 stars Bandon here I come!.......2006-12-10

This was money well spent. A quick read but with tons of useful advice - kinda like having a cheat sheet for setting up a vacation. Easy to make decisions based on the detailed info. Love the interviews with the golf course architects as it's nice to hear them describe their work in their own words for a change. If the courses are half as nice as these amazing photos, we're in for a treat! Bottom line: my friends and I have never been to Bandon but we chose it for our yearly golf trip and now we're confident we'll get the most out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely "insider"........2006-12-07

I actually bought this book after my Bandon trip (which was amazing) as a gift for my dad and it does a fantaastic job telling you what to expect from the golf courses, rooms, restaurants and the other things to do in the area if you're not playing 36 holes a day. The descriptions were spot on and I only wish I had bought it for myself before I left because I would have known about the "secret" stuff like the Sheep Ranch course, the par-3 course, the best caddies to ask for, and the new course being built next to Pacific Dunes. I guess I'll just have to go back with dad!

    Book Description

Ever since the Dark Ages, when a few Scots ambled over the dunes with their het kolvin sticks, slapping a ball around in something akin to golf, no sport has more universally or irreversibly awed its players and fans. THE ULTIMATE GOLF BOOK captures the world's ultimate sporting passion as it has never been captured before, with a lively, authoritative history, stunning illustrations, and perhaps the finest collection of original writing on the sport ever assembled between two covers. Putting a fresh, contemporary spin on the centuries-old story of golf, Sports Illustrated's colorful senior writer John Garrity has written a delightful, loose-limbed riff of a history that travels the globe and the links, covering the key personalities, events, advances in technique and technology, proliferation of interest, and curious mystery of this international obsession. Complementing the history are twenty personal essays from a diverse group of literary low-handicappers, musing on everything from the Age of Tiger, to the woes of the lowly club pro, to the charm of playing golf in the dead of winter, to giving up the game altogether. All of this plays out against the dramatic backdrop of more than 300 photographs and illustrations, many rare and historic, many commissioned especially for this volume, which is truly one of a kind. From the tee to the green, the clubhouse to the nuthouse, THE ULTIMATE GOLF BOOK is a must-have for any serious student of the game.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fun and terrific book with a journalistic edge!.......1999-04-02

I happen to know the author who showed me a galley of his book, which is coming out in May, he said. The book features a simple format with something like 1,100 Q&As divided among 18 category-chapters that include "The Majors," "The LPGA," "Augusta," "Guys and Gals," "The Seventies," "Hogan, Nelson, and Snead," "Spanning the Globe," "Golf Media and Pop Culture," "Ryder Cup," and "Golf Rules, Equipment and Controversies." Readers can keep score with each hole(chapter) being a par 3, 4, or 5, and scores issued depending on how many Qs in each chapter are answered correctly. There's also a lot of great photos I had never seen before, to include "Old" and "Young" Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, Ely Callaway, Althea Gibson, Arnold Palmer, Bobby Jones with a camera, Tiger Woods, Mickey Wright, Walter Hagen, Jan Stephenson, and Laura Baugh. There's even one shot of a young Nancy Lopez about 20 years ago swinging for the fences and wearing a white miniskirt--she really does have nice legs. There are also nifty sidebars, strange-but-trues and a variety of top-ten lists. All in all, it's a terrific book because the author provides hundreds of interesting Q&As that aren't your run-of-the-mill cliche questions, although a lot of your favorite Q&As are included. It's just hard enough to be a challenge, yet "easy" enough so as not to alienate golf fans less than expert. Unlike the several other golf trivia books in existence written by people I've never heard of (and I do read a ton of golf publications and books), this one is actually authored by a veteran golf journalist who has written extensively, covering golf for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The National, Golf World, and Golf Illustrated. There's a lot of funny stuff in here as well as revelatory material. I believe Towle was getting David Feherty to write his foreword, and I know that CBS's Jim Nantz and noted golf author Curt Sampson have back-cover endorsement blurbs. Also, the cover has been significantly revised from what's pictured here on Amazon--it's a lot cooler now. Anyway, this is everything a golf trivia book should be and I love it!

                Book Description

Music is central to any film, creating a tone for the movie that is just as vital as the visual and narrative components. In recent years, racial and gender diversity in film has exploded, and the making of musical scores has changed drastically.

Hearing Film offers the first critical examination of music in the films of the 1980s and 1990s and looks at the burgeoning role of compiled scores in the shaping of a film . In the first section, "A Woman Scored," Kassabian analyzes desire and agency in the music of such films as Dangerous Liaisons, Desert Hearts, Bagdad Café, Dirty Dancing and Thelma and Louise. In "At the Twilight's Last Scoring," she looks at gender, race, sexuality and assimilation in the music of The Hunt for Red October, Lethal Weapon 2 and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. And finally, in "Opening Scores," she considers how films such as Dangerous Minds, The Substitute, Mississippi Masala and Corrina, Corrina bring together several different entry points of identification through their scores.

In Einstein, History, and Other Passions, Gerald Holton, a professor of physics and the history of science at Harvard University, dispels the idea that science is creatively inferior to the arts. By focusing on the life and work of Albert Einstein, Holton illustrates that the practical nature of science flows from the creative pursuit of knowledge for knowledge's sake. Holton reminds us that some of Einstein's greatest work was conducted at a time when he was madly in love and argues that scientists, like artists, are driven by a passion to explore and create. They do science, he says, not for prestige, but simply because they find it impossible not to.

                    Book Description

Through his rich exploration of Einstein's thought, Gerald Holton shows how the best science depends on great intuitive leaps of imagination, and how science is indeed the creative expression of the traditions of Western civilization.

It is astonishing how new 'Yi-Ching' material keeps appearing, some useful, some not (too much of it is a poor rehash of what we aready had, or arbitrary reconstruction).Happily, this new version has an interesting slant - exploring the 'Shamanic' use of the oracle. Although this has entailed the exploration and consultation of ancient sources, in part reconstructing the outlook of an archaic milieu, it actually translates into a very 'hands-on' look at the Yi-Ching.' The contemporary poetry used to punctuate the text at various points could have been a disasterous mismatch, but on the contrary, Jay Ramsey's verses evoke the spirit of the text wonderfully. Exploring the his- torical background to the Yi-Ching is a fascinating enterprise - but, without some feeling for the Yi-ching, as a kind of living, organic entity, 'historical' reconstructions can be hopelessly boring. Martin Palmer - and his collaborators have done a splendid job. Well informed but never ponderous, this is a sensitive and beautifully turned out piece of work.

While there is a plethora of books available that provide tips on Web design, most authors leave a significant gap between the theory and practice--a gap that is left up to the reader to fill. Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed boldly steps into that gap with specific observations and suggestions backed with solid quantitative analysis. This book focuses only on home page design as the most important point of presence for any Web site.

This definitive work is coauthored by Jakob Nielsen--the accepted industry expert in Web usability--and Marie Tahir, an expert in user profiling. Their collaboration has produced a guide of such rare practical benefit that Web designers will likely wear out their first copy scouring the pages to savor every last morsel of wisdom.

The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search, privacy policies, and logos are used.

All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts. Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for potential improvements.

It's a bold move to offer a critique of industry-standard Web sites such as Yahoo, CNET, and eBay, but the authors have done such a fine job that the designers of those sites will surely make reading this book a high priority. For the rest of us, this work will serve as an invaluable gospel. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Design guidelines, convention usage, screen real estate, navigation, content presentation, search facilities, links, graphics and animation, advertising, news, customization, and customer feedback.

                          Book Description

The book begins with a briefing on Jakob's web usability principles, themselves culled from years of research. The 50 sites fall under such categories as Fortune 500 Sites, Highest-Traffic Sites, and E-Commerce Sites. The content is simply presented: Four book pages are devoted to each homepage. The first page is a clean screenshot of the site's homepage (for readers to make their own, unbiased judgments), followed by a page that explains the site's purpose and summarizes its success--or failure--at usabilty. The third and fourth pages are devoted to crtiques, where Jakob and Marie present no-holds-barred commentary for specific usability practices, as well as suggestions for improvement. Although only the homepage of each site is analyzed, many of the critiques can be applied to overall website design.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books available on Website Usability.......2007-05-21

Homepage Usability presents 50 major websites to artful analysis and thoughtful design criticism much in the way a well written art history overview would examine and catalog an exhibit. I found the book impressive in its exquisite rendering of the visuals, clarity of the markup of items and the writing clear and professional. The greatest compliant this reviewer has with the book is a keyword in its subtitle - deconstructed. The book would have been more useful if a set of guidelines and conclusions were more clearly presented rather than being distributed though the book. Perhaps in a revised edition or a companion volume the authors could take the experience and analysis gathered and and present it in the context of human factors engineering and webpage usability. Still despite these shortcomings, the book is important and clear in what it does accomplish - it is not a slap-dash effort - it stands out as well done. There is still need for a constructivist book on the subject. Much like the core web language HTML the details are overwhelming and structure sorely lacking - Homepage Usability does not simply elicit principles of web design. It is a benchmark to publishers that quality writing in the computer industry is possible.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!.......2007-04-14

For that homepage that snaps and attracts design in Internet 'real estate': covering navigation, music, content, identity recognition employing elements of type, pictures, spacing, priority signals, coloring-- looks at the MOST visited sites such as Disney, ebay, amazon and MTV. 50 different sites with several pages devoted to each site. 320 pages all in color in beautiful book layout with points of reference for easy-to-compare pros and cons one site to another.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference and resource for solid design.......2006-11-25

While the content here is somewhat dated today, the lessons within are timeless. Each website reviewed and taken apart shows you exactly why some elements don't work and why others do. Then, when put back together, visually it shows you how it should have been done day one. Not only the 'how' but the 'why' as well. This is a great guide to keep by your desk if you design websites regularly.

2 out of 5 stars Nielson disappoints again.......2006-01-10

Admittedly, I've been biased against Nielson's works since the publication of `Designing Web Usability' in 1999; finding his tendency to oversimplify and `deconstruct' rather ineffectual. And as usual, `Homepage Usability' disappoints as an overly sensational and inaccurate evaluation of homepage usability. There are good parts, in particular, the statistics you may want to reference for your own usability initiatives. But the `50 webpages deconstructed' portion is not much more than Nielson spewing hot air. If you learn (or are entertained) best through critique by an impossible standard and ideal, by all means, this book is for you. If you are looking for a USABLE and real life guide to homepage design, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars detailed critiques of major websites.......2005-12-01

This book excels in giving detailed critiques of the home pages of 50 prominent websites. These include Microsoft, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, General Electric and Boeing. The websites span the gamut from appealing to a mass audience, like Amazon and MTV, to more specialised corporate sites like GE.

The authors offer incisive comments. All the more valuable for not being always complimentary. They show how even a large company can have flaws in its home page. Take GE for example. Its page has a "Buy Online" section. But it is mostly misleading. The links in that section point to such items as aircraft, which you cannot buy online.

The websites were captured several years ago. So it's quite possible that if you go to their current addresses, the pages are different. Yet the analysis in the book is still instructive. It should also be noted that the unusual shape of the book might be misleading. From the outside, it looks like a coffeetable type book. Full of glossy images. It does indeed have the latter. But these are high resolution screen captures that enhance the visual nature of the pages and their analyses.

If you are designing your own website, try going first through this book, for inspiration.
