Whether it's the mad dash from the train for the 8:30 bells at work, or my female MIT colleague serving tea, or my manager telling me always to be vague in business meetings, or simply being in a public bath and everyone pointing at my chest hair, you won't want to miss my adventure! As I explore Japan, I will share my views with you on the positives and negatives, challenges, and changes I see for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for my MBA Intl. Business class.......2005-05-16

Do you ever find yourself in a large bookstore overwhelmed by the sheer number of titles, and wonder how so many new ideas continue to emerge in such mass quantity? Well, this is one of those books that keep us returning to bookstores with faith in the fact that we will not always leave disappointed! This book is unique in its perspective on a subject I am interested in as a professor of international business (Zicklin School of Business; Baruch College, City University of New York) - cross cultural understanding. Written in a pen indicative of ample experience in Japan's corporate world, yet from an outside Western perspective, it reveals nuances of Japanese business culture that only an expatriate can easily discern. "No Elbow Room" is blunt to a pain yet carefully objective and fair in its exposé of little known tidbits of Japanese culture and business protocol outside of the Island nation itself. Yet while set in Japan, I found myself easily adapting lessons learned to virtually any cross-cultural setting, prompting me to list this book as required reading in my "Foreign Markets, Cultures, Regimes" class. This is a self-authored text, that no doubt a large publishing house will soon discover and market to the masses. The book is short (179 pages) and a quick yet informative read. I recommend it for not just international business scholars, but as an aid for sociology class discussions, gender-relations discussions, for anyone interested in international relations, and particularly for anyone wishing to travel to Japan, particularly from the West. And if you think you're well traveled and immune to culture shock, you must pick up this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Trip into the Culture of Sameness.......2005-04-23

No Elbow Room is a quick and informative read into the Cultural mind set of Japanese relationships. It opens up for examination a world of contradicting correctness and sheds light on some of my own experiences in Japan. You will read it from cover to cover enjoying the wonderful illustrations and lighthearted humor.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun.......2005-02-23

Fun, Fun, Fun. A funny and informative documentary of first-hand experiences in Japan. A must if you are considering working for a few years for a company in Tokyo. Also a must if you want to get insight into the workings of a culture totally different from American and European cultures. The illustrations are hilarious. The book is precise with marvelous drawings. There are informative comments on improving the lot of women in Japan. Be prepared for a fun ride!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read!.......2005-01-22

Kenneth writes a detailed and fascinating read. What an experience. Having stayed in Japan myself for a while, I found No Elbow Room to confirm some things I had suspected about living in Japan. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look.......2005-01-12

I think that this book is a fascinating look into living and experiencing a new culture. I think anyone who has ever had the opportunity to work in a different country and experience a new culture can relate to the humorous, shocking, as well as serious experiences that Mark has as he is a new grad of MIT and finds himself working for a Japanese company in Japan for the first time. His humor as well as insights into Japanese culture make this a fascinating book.

While this book is a joy to read,it is also very informative about Japanese culture, including areas such as Corporate Japan, the education system in Japan, family life in Japan, and social expectations, which I believe are often misunderstood by many Americans.

4 out of 5 stars At Home on the Range.......2003-06-26

As recently as 10 years ago, Moe's Norman's very existence was considered apocryphal. A few American golf pros, Paul Azinger and Lee Trevino come to mind, told stories about an eccentric Canadian with a strange swing so accurate he could stand on a driving range and hit the 250 yard sign repeatedly with his driver. Or they told of the time he hit three balls off the tee that were later found huddled together like mushrooms in the middle of the fairway. Then there's the time that, upon hearing someone in the gallery say he was a poor putter, he proceeded to hit a hole-in-one, boasting "I guess I won't be putting today." They said he was so good that if a hole called for a 3-wood and an 8- iron, he'd play it 8-iron/3-wood just to keep it interesting. The stories always held the not-so- subtle claim that if Norman had played the US tour, no one would have ever heard of Jack Nicklaus.

But nobody had seen him recently. He was a ghost. Finally, in 1995, Golf Digest ran a cover story that brought Moe and his strange swing back to life. By that time he had become the poster boy for a new golf movement called Natural Golf, and the leaders of that company were splashing Moe's image around as much as they could. This biography soon followed.

Fortunately, readers of "The Feeling of Greatness" will discover not an advertising piece, but a balanced look at a complicated man. Because of a childhood head injury, or perhaps just because genetics occasionally breeds the strange and unusual, Moe Norman represents obsessive-compulsion applied to golf. He is described as golf's "Rain Man", a savant-like creature of habit who found solace in striking golf balls -- hundreds a day for thousands of days -- but who was so shy, he wouldn't appear at awards ceremonies. He muttered a continuous stream-of-consciousness monologue and played so quickly that he often struck his shot before his partner had pulled his tee out of the ground. He never paused over putts, but rather hit them in full stride. He was not your typical golf pro.

However, while he was very successful on the Canadian tours of the 50s and 60s, he was a flop on the US PGA tour and, in fact, was reprimanded by fellow pros for boorish behavior. The book is honest enough to make it clear that any notion of his tearing up the US tour if only given a fair chance is just false. While he is generally regarded as one of the finest ball strikers of all time, he never came to terms with the real scoring clubs in his bag - his wedge and putter. In the end, Moe Norman was most at home on the driving range, where he gives impressive demonstrations to this day.

5 out of 5 stars You should see Moe in action.......2000-01-28

Having lived in the North Florida town where Moe and Craig Shankland give golf clinics every Wednesday of the winter, I have watched Moe in action many times, continually to my amazement. One day, during my 1000 balls a day stint, Moe gave me a lesson I will never forget. He's wonderful. I only wish the jerks on the tour could have accepted his idiosyncracies and made him feel comfortable out there. But who wants to make someone who can beat the pants off you feel comfortable?

5 out of 5 stars The best ball striker ever didn't made it to the top........1999-10-03

This is a great story of a relatively unknown personality who could not be a part of the "system". His whole life is unconventional; however, his golf is exceptional. An upolished man, Moe Norman never achieved PGA greatness in the US, but is a legend in the amateur ranks in Canada, owning 33 course records and several rounds shot in the 50's. I was fascinated by the many examples of his ball striking capabilities, like hitting over 1500 drives in one afternoon. Each one traveled over 220 yards and each was in a 30 yard wide fairway. The average golfer loves this story. A guy like you and me CAN hit the ball well! That is what we all want.

5 out of 5 stars A superb read for both natural and conventional golfers.......1999-07-13

Moe Norman's incredible, tumultous life is thoroughly chronicled in this book, complete with photographs. If you use the natural golf system and are as passionate about it as I am (and most natural golfers are) you will thorougly enjoy this book. Conventianal golfers will also enjoy learning about Moe, the greatest ball striker ever. His life was full of ups and downs, and certainly was never dull!

5 out of 5 stars the golf world's "rainman".......1999-01-02

i have read this book three times, moe is the average person with above average desire. if he can become the great golfer that he is with the adversity he had, it should make anyone with the ability to swing a club try harder. most of this book is about moes selfimposed barrers of selfconsciousness moe did it his way and was successful. a must read for any serious golfer

          Product Description

This book is an in-depth exploration of the worldwide phenomenon of Elvis impersonators. There are believed to be between 10,000 and 30,000 people who say they are Elvis impersonators from among the over 10,000,000 fans in every city in America, and every country in the world. For more than ten years, Chicago based photographer Patty Carroll has traveled across the globe to photograph over 300 impersonators. The fruit of the singular obsession of this self-described “normal person” is a fabulously funny, totally engrossing portrayal of a slice of life of consuming interest to millions of people throughout the world. The book will be a vivid, exciting, richly colorful series of portraits of Elvis impersonators in full costume- ready in every way to have their fifteen minutes of fame- fully believing that they have been recreated as “The King.” The portraits are presented together with commentaries and written responses about themselves and their relation to Elvis drawn from interviews by the photographer. A brief personal history of each of the impersonators will describe their lives; including their day job, how long they have been impersonating Elvis and their hopes and ambitions for the future. The book represents the ultimate realization of years of research, photography, interviewing, talking, listening, hanging out, observing, and being totally immersed in the world of Elvis impersonators for more than ten years. There is no end in sight for this amazing culture - it continues to expand too fast to ever really document them all. The impersonators are a diverse, unregulated, self-obsessed and self-promoting group of people who all have the same fantasy of being Elvis. These men, women, and children range in age, size, girth, nationality, race, religion and profession, and include every type of person imaginable! Impersonators are at the core of a worldwide phenomenon in which Elvis Presley continues to be adored, admired, and imitated since his death in 1977.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fun and Entertaining, But Certainly not In-Depth.......2006-01-24

This book is fun and cheezy, finding the right balance between the proper respect for the King, his legions of fans, and the legions of Elvis Tribute Artisits--the ETAs--who keep that cult moving forward, and backward, at the same time, and a proper amount of skepticism for grown men (and women) who put on the capes and rhinestones, sideburns and shades, the TCB pendants, and get out there and pretend they're somebody they're not.

The book is a cute little hardbound thing, all of about 8"x8", not a coffee table book. It only runs about 96 pages, featuring 74 ETAs in full regalia. I read it through in about 40 minutes.

The layout had me confused from the beginning? Why is Mike Albert the first guy featured? I thought it was alphabetical, but that's not so. Why is John Loos the last ETA in the book? Why do some guys get a two-page spread while others don't? Is there any kind of hierarchy or structure to the presentation? If so, I missed it.

You got your typical ETAs, the old Elvis, the young Elvis. You've got Elvez (a personal favorite), a black Elvis, a coupla-three of female Elvii, skydiving Elvii, a dad-and-son Elvis thing, Canadian and Japanese and Norwegian Elvii, even a guy doing ventrilloquism as part of his ETA schtick. That's cool, interesting, and I'd love to read all about each of them. But I can't, because each ETA gets only a few lines. The portraits are quite good, most often filling the page in excellently rendered color, but the write-ups are not nearly enough to whet the curiosity that the portraits generate. Poor Johnny Baron doesn't even get any write-up, other than the boiler plate years performing, day job, and home base info provided for every single ETA. Yet Joe Tirrito gets a full-page poem. It's confusing. A much better approach would have been to provide a bit more standardized bio, a bit more backstory to the parade of truly fascinating ETAs we meet through their pictures.

I like the Andrei Codrescu intro, and the fore- and afterwords by Patty Carroll. This is just the kind of context you need to get into the mood of the book, and understand where it's coming from conceptually.

One of the best things about the book is the very last entry, a by-name list of full contact information for all of the ETAs in the book, with email and web page addresses. With this highly thoughtful addition, you can send a simple email note of love and devotion to your favorite ETA, or set up a grand Elvis blowout for your next social extravaganza.

Bottom line: This is a must-have for any serious Elvis collector, or the tragically ironic/ironically tragic fans of the Cult of Elvis. But, it's frustratingly light in depth on what are some genuinely interesting characters. And it's heavy, Jack, heavy on the tribute, heavy on the deference, heavy on the love and unadulterated, unending devotion to the Man, the Myth, the Legend, the one and only, Elvis Aaron Presley.

          Thankyou, thankyouverymuch.

There is only one billiards encyclopedia in the world better than this one (and it costs upwards of [$$]!) This is a *great* reference on the terminology, history, and facts of pool, billiards, snooker and other cuesports, written by the curator of the Billiard Archive (i.e., he knows what he's talking about.) I can't recommend this enough. The trade paperback version is more affordable than the hardback, but I'm really happy to have the hardback version.

This is an outstanding resource book for anyone interested in learning more about biilards generally, or for someone with a specific questions about any aspect of the sport. I found many topics to be very extensive, providing background data, and perspective far beyond simple defititions. Many times after looking up a term, I would continue to read items over the next few pages just to learn about other topics. This is the most interesting and informative book about billiards that I own..

This is by far one of the most extensive books concerning the sport of billiards and pool. I often go to this resource before writing for pool publications; I also use it as a guide when shopping either online or traveling. There is more information here than perhaps EVER gathered in one book. Excellent photos and history in the wonderful reference material. If you are interested at all in this sport this is a must have! Worth every penny.

          5 out of 5 stars a must for all.......1998-05-25

This book captures the vivid history of a sport that has until recently been relatively unknown. Not onlyu in my opinion does this book capture the origins of the sport in a way never seen before as a piece of art it is relatively uncomprimised in the industry today.

          Book Description

As the first major Photoshop update since Adobe revamped its product line in 2003, this is the release you've been waiting for-and this is the guide that will get you up to speed on it fastest! Rather than sift through hundreds of pages detailing every last Photoshop feature and function, you can go directly to the new features that interest you most and get the explanations you desire in classic Ben Willmore style-intuitive, crystal clear, and in-depth. By focusing on a single topic-what's new in this version-the award-winning author provides precisely what experienced Photoshop users like yourself have been clamoring for, in exactly the depth you demand. Including just enough information about older features to make the new ones understandable, Ben shows you not only which buttons to push but why.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding primer for the Photoshop user.......2007-01-03

Most books go over all the essentials. Even Deke McClelland's find ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS2 ONE-ON-ONE is great at introducing the NEW features and changes. But Ben's book is a quickie, one-day overview of what's new and improved and changed. For the price, there is no better book for someone buying PSCS2 to upgrade from any older version (like I did, from quaint old Photoshop 5.5). Full color pictures and clear typography -- making it easy to go back and review -- just make this book a steal at Amazon's discounted price. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars CS users - Buy it, read it!.......2006-05-28

Title: Photoshop CS2 : Up to Speed
          Author: Ben Willmore
          Publisher: Peachpit Press
          Number of pages: 171
          ISBN: ISBN: 0321330501
          List Price: $24.99

Photoshop CS2 - Up to Speed was written for users of Photoshop CS (v8.0)who plan to or have just upgraded to CS2. The longer you have been using CS the more you will appreciate and benefit from this book. Expert Photoshop user/author/teacher Ben Willmore had access to the Adobe Photoshop design team to review chapters and technical issues which resulted in an in-depth
and accurate detailed description of the changes made in CS2(v9.0).

Each chapter starts out by providing an overview, and a section called "Where's My Stuff". From there each topic in the overview is explained in detail. Visually the book is well written and easy to read - using bold colored text, and colored screen
captures (with additional descriptions below each screen capture). Occasionally the small screen captures can be difficult to read. There is an overwhelming amount of information contained within each chapter. Ben covers all types -what's new, what's changed, what's been removed, changes to menus and keyboard shortcuts.

The 1st chapter provides lots of details on Bridge but may be better served from a DVD based video explanation. Bridge is a very visual application. The 2nd chapter on General Tweaks covers numerous miscellaneous tweaks that is a must read for
CS2 upgrade users. Chapter 3 covers the new Layers palette in fine detail. Chapters 4 and 5 on Smart Objects and Variables respectively are worth the price of the book alone - well done Ben. Chapter 6 covers small gems (WYSIWYG Font Menu, Smart Guides, Animation Palette, Swatches, PDF-X, Adobe Stock Photos) sufficiently. From here the next chapters cover photographic related topics (Camera Raw 3, - High Dynamic Range imaging, Retouching & Filter Enahancements, Small Gems). These chapters are clearly explained through a thorough use of screen captures and photos.

Summary: If you are a long time photoshop CS user then this is the 1st book you should buy and read. Ben covers every area (except ImageReady which had esssential no changes and Version Cue) in great detail and leaves no area untouched. Since there is an overwhelming amount of information (changes) described in this book (that's a good thing) I would suggest while and or after reading each chapter to bring up CS2 and go over the information just covered. Also, you do not need to read the book in the order in which it was written. Choose the areas you are interested in most first then come back to the other chapters. Finally, if there is one suggestion I would make to the author for the next version of "Up to Speed" consider creating a DVD based visual guide to describe the changes going from CS2 to CS3 to accompany/supplement the written book.
Overall I highly recommend this book for the target audience just described and the price of the book with an online discount is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Ben Wilmore Does it Again.......2006-05-18

Ben Wilmore is one of the foremost Photoshop trainers in the world. When he has time, he writes articles he sends to his photoshop mailing list (well worth joining). His tips are always on target and have provided me with extremely valuable insights into using Photoshop.

If you are a novice with Photoshop, or have never used a version before CS2, this isn't the best book for you. Willmore assumes you have substantial experience with Photoshop CS. However, if you are a CS user who is moving up to CS2, this book is an invaluable guide to the many new features in CS2. I have found this book extremely helpful and very readable. As usual, Wilmore's style is clear, easy-to-read, and the color illustrations very helpful. No, I don't get a cut of his royalties, I just love it when I find a reference that is truly worth the price!

          5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy.......2006-02-25

This book does exactly what it says on the cover, and it does it extremely well. It has been my constant source of reference for the past three weeks as even the often neglegted Index is well thought out.
I was always a big fan of the File Browser and was sorry to see it replaced in CS2 by the Bridge, which I must admit it took me some time to get my head round (where has the Desktop gone?) until this book came along. Ben goes through it in great detail, as he does with everything, and I now find it a breeze.
Everything new, and everything moved or hidden, is covered in a very well explained and simplistic style accompanied by detailed illustrations. The presentation and layout of the book is absolutely superb, and for anyone with a knowledge of Photoshop, moving up from CS to CS2 this book must be at the top of the shopping list.
It is not for anyone coming straight into Photoshop at CS2 level

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone upgrading - or thinking of upgrading.......2005-12-09

The biggest challenge to anyone upgrading to a new version of an application is figuring out what's new. Willmore makes this easy. In a clear, concise format, he lays out exactly what's new in CS2, from the relatively mundane to the great new hidden features that you wouldn't likely find without a tour guide like this.
It's important to note that this is not a beginner's guide. The very format of the book should make this clear, but this isn't a starting point for someone looking to learn Photoshop - it's a book for people that are already familiar and comfortable with Photoshop who, as the title says, just need to get "up to speed" with the latest release of Photoshop.
