5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Journey.......2001-08-26

This book was an eye-opening read to the world of learning disabilities. Since reading it several years ago, I have become acquainted with the author, who is an incredible person! The calendar she wrote about is available from her, and I have one in my first grade classroom. The children enjoy finding out what we're doing next by looking at the little Teddy-bear pictures. If you are the parent of young children or a teacher of pre-school through first grade, contact her for the calendar. This book is great!

5 out of 5 stars The Power of a Mother's Determination.......2000-08-11

The National Institutes of Health estimate that 15 percent of all people have learning disabiliies. I suspect that the number is actually closer to 40-50 percent, if you include difficulties in a specific area (just in reading, math, sequencing or spatial problems). My estimate is based on how many people have trouble performing in one or more areas, even after many years of schooling and effort. For example, about 35 percent of the people in our state read in English below the 8th grade level in proficiency.

Yet as a society, we tend to act as though everyone learns easily and effortlessly. That makes life tough on the parents and children who are having problems learning. They find that they do not always get the help and emotional support they need. Once discouraged, one can end up accepting performance below one's capability.

If you are not learning disabled or do not have anyone in your family who is, this book will be a real eye-opener. In one family, three of four children have serious difficulties. The fourth goes on to excel at Harvard. Yet with great determination, endless effort, enormous imagination, and unending commitment, a mother is able to make progress. Some will discount her progress because she obviously had lots of financial resources. This book should be a wake-up call to all of us that we need to do more to support such families, especially when they do not have these financial resources.

If you or someone in your family does have learning disabilities, this book will be poignant. You will feel the pain more directly. On the other hand, I hope you will grasp the book's encouraging message: Someone out there can help you or your child. But be prepared for many backward steps, side steps, and delays.

The book mostly focuses on Brian's problems, because he was the most severely affected. As a young child, he had trouble saying words in recognizeable form. With endless energy, he was a nonstop buzz saw. He was constantly hurting himself by running into things, and creating disasters. He was slow to learn almost all of the standard motor skills and to toilet train. Learning was almost impossible for him.

Eventually, Brian's mother comes to learn that he has no peripheral vision, has trouble conceptualizing except by touching things, needs physical sequencing to grasp order, and requires having things broken down into their simplest elements. She stays the course until these diagnoses are made, and Brian goes to the right school (after many somewhat right and many wrong ones).

In this book, you'll encounter the independence, tradition, wishful thinking, bureaucratic, communication, disbelief, and procrastination stalls. Nancy Lelewer proves to be a champion stallbuster, and the family goes on to prosper. After he children were older she learned to develop educational games, do learning research, and write this book, despite some learning diabilities of her own. Unfortunately, her marriage did not survive all of these difficulties the children experienced. I suspect that that is not uncommon.

The book ends with some sound prescriptions for making progress: Early diagnosis; understanding; appropriate remediation; concrete, practical tools; encouraging/reminding person to help; and possibly medication. You will also find a list of organizations that may be able to help.

I hope everyone will read this book. The awareness the book creates will help open our eyes to the need for more individualized diagnosis and instructional methods if we are to tap the full potential of everyone!

4 out of 5 stars It's Mostly Right.......2000-03-28

Reading this book as part of a class on the lives of people with disabilities, I enjoyed the book. The only thing that I would take it out of the context of the "everyday" experience was the tremendous resources this mother had for her children, three of the four with learning disabilities. (Nearly all of them went to boarding schools, while she stayed at home with them before they went away to school.) Not too technical, but a honest mother's story.

An easy to read and interesting account of Gretzky's career. He is truly a hero and this book really tries to capture his spirit. This book is appropriate for hockey lovers of all ages - I bought it for my 11 year old son and found myself enjoying it immensely. The photos are fantastic and there are many of them. This book is great for any hockey player or coach and ours is kept on our coffee table.

Book Description

One of this century's greatest athletes, Wayne Gretzky, The Great One, never failed to enthrall hockey fans with his incredible talent and skill.

It was with bittersweet sadness that the hockey world accepted the retirement of its most beloved player after the 1998-99 season. For the past twenty years, Wayne Gretzky above all has epitomized the toughness, power, and excitement of hockey. A class act, admired by teammates and foes alike, holder of numerous records, and always a consummate sportsman, Gretzky simply defines the game of hockey.

Including more than 120 extraordinary black and white and color photographs, The Great One celebrates Gretzky, from his early days as Brantford, Ontario's whiz kid, all the way to his Stanley Cup glories. The Great One includes a compilation of number ninety-nine's records of achievement and game-by-game statistics for his two decades of excellence.

Expertly written and researched by hockey historian Andrew Podnieks, the book also includes rare interviews, anecdotes, and little-known facts about Gretzky.

With Wayne Gretzky's retirement, hockey fans everyone mourned the passing of an era. But Gretzky's words and achievements live on in The Great One. There is no better way to remember the career of hockey's most superb and charismatic player.

ANDREW PODNIEKS is the author of many books on hockey, including The Blue and White Book, Portraits of the Game, and Shooting Stars. A hockey historian, photographer, and former creative writing teacher, Andrew lives in Toronto.

Wayne Gretzky obviously is the greatest Hockey
player ever (and Mike Modano is the best we
Amre-I-cans have produced, so far). Though
this book is more show than tell, it still
is a worthy tribute to Gretz. There are others
better though.

1 out of 5 stars Not this time Wayne.......2005-02-26

I admire everything about Wayne Gretzky and everything he has done. But i also think Andrew did a poor job reflecting how much wayne gretzky has really accomplished. He is not just a great player , he is a great person. The book lacked certain detail and as the other reviewer said. It probably is only meant for a 3rd grade level =)

5 out of 5 stars The Great One: Life and Times of Wayne Gretzky.......2000-05-16

I bought this book for my 3rd grade son to write a paper with, and found myself completly engaged in it. For someone who didn't know much about "The Great One", I am now as big a fan as my son! Tells a lot about his younger years and doesn't just focus on the goals. AWESOME

After nearly two decades in the NHL, Wayne Gretzky continues to hold most of the league's major scoring records. In fact, he holds more NHL records than any other player. Growing up in Ontario, Wayne started playing hockey when he was only four, on an ice rink his father built in their backyard. He went on to become known as "the Great One," playing in 18 All-Star games, named MVP nine times, and ranked as the league's leading scorer 10 times. This completely revised and updated biography follows Wayne's exciting career, from his four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers to his achievements with the New York Rangers, and retirement from Hockey.

3 out of 5 stars Wayne Gretzky.......2000-11-03

I'm writing about the book I read in Social Studies. This book was farly good. This book talked about Wayne's life. It said that when he was a little kid he moved to Toronto to get away from all the paretens who's kids were mad that he was always scoring. At a young age Wayne played hockey with his grandmother. Wayne was also great as a young boy. Wayne was 18 years old when he started to play hockey in the NHL. Wayne has 40 Reular season records. Wayne played for 4 different teams. Wayne Gretzky is the greats or one of the greats. I think that if you like sports you should read this book.

Fluid City traces the transformation of the urban waterfront of Melbourne, the re-vitalization of the Yarra River waterfront, Melbourne Docklands and Port Philip Bay.

As the financial and industrial centre of Australia, in the late nineteenth century, Melbourne developed a new world exuberance. Yet the twentieth century saw Melbourne suffering from a declining industrial and economic base. The city in the 1980's was de-industrialising, and the re-facing of the city to the water was a key urban strategy of the 1980s and 90s and a catalyst for economic transformation.

A range of projects collectively transformed the image of Melbourne's waterfront which has become the frontier for new forms of urban planning, design and politics. On the waterfront the rules become more fluid and create scope for the production of new forms of economic, political and symbolic capital. The

This book is a thorough exploration of the complexity of place making on urban waterfronts. Melbourne presents us with an experiment in a bold undertaking and in its transformation we can see how the various entities come together and the results can be seen in both success and failure.

This book bridges significant gaps between different discourses about the city and to challenge singular ways of viewing the city.

                    Book Description

At the time the Soviet Union broke apart in the late 1980’s, it possessed the largest scientific community in the world. The rapid development, in just a few decades, of such an immense scientific establishment—in a social and economic environment strikingly different from the West—presents an unusual opportunity for the world’s leading authority on Soviet science to examine how the Russian experience sheds light on the status and character of science and technology throughout the world.

The book is organized around five questions, each given its own chapter: “Is Science a Social Construction?” “Are Science and Technology Westernizing Influences?” “ How Robust Is Science Under Stress?” “ How Willing Are Scientists to Reform Their Own Institutions?” and “Who Should Control Technology?”

The author believes that the Russian example reveals in detail both the strengths and the weaknesses of social constructivism. Though many areas of Russian science show the unmistakable influence of social factors, the deviation of the Soviet Union from standard genetics for many years, followed by its eventual restoration, indicates the weakness of social constructivism and illustrates the relationship of science to reality. He further maintains that although science in Russia has been terribly abused, it nonetheless remains strong; it has proven to be much more resilient than most previous observers believed, and, furthermore, is not nearly as directly dependent on political freedom for its vitality as Western analysts maintained.

In the final section, the author makes two strong claims. The first comes from an examination of the social constructivist thesis that science is formed by social influences. His conclusion is that Russian science has indeed been influenced in that country in distinct ways, but not always in a fashion that will please radical social constructivists. The second strong claim is that contrary to the view of many Western scholars that science can flourish only in conditions of nurturing freedom, science turns out to be remarkably robust, able to flourish in adverse conditions.

If you want to learn how to make broad vacuous claims then this book is for you. The argument made by this author about science were without substance or logic. He goes so far as to claim that the very content of science is a social product. If you think that this is true then go read the book, you deserve it.

5 out of 5 stars A small book about big questions.......1998-08-31

What did Russian-Soviet scientists want? They wanted more state money for fundumental science and less political interference. They got first and did not get second. If one wants to know how state funded basic science destroied Soviet economy and if one wants to know why state funded science is a most uneffective way of spending taxpayer's money then one must read Graham's book together with T. Kealey's classic Economical Laws of Scientific Research. Excellent, very usefull and well written book with a lot of novel ideas and unstandard conclusions.

Sierra was known for being the formost creator of adventure games in the 80s to the early 90s. Space Quest was one of the greatest fruits of their efforts. This book, having read it at my library, gives you novelazations of the first 5 games in the space quest series. 5/6 of the series for eternity (unless Sierra makes another one, which has the same probability of a snowball surviving in hell). These are very humorful, and give you a good grasp of the game, even if you never played it. You also get Walkthroughs, maps, and pointlists for each of the games. A great help for completeing it! So sad that this book is out of print, but if you see a copy I would say to snap it up as quick as possible, because this book is just great. No more to be said.

                          Book Description

Identify, mitigate, and respond to network attacks

Achieving maximum network security is a challenge for most organizations. Cisco® ASA, a new unified security device that combines firewall, network antivirus, intrusion prevention, and virtual private network (VPN) capabilities, provides proactive threat defense that stops attacks before they spread through the network.

This new family of adaptive security appliances also controls network activity and application traffic and delivers flexible VPN connectivity. The result is a powerful multifunction network security device that provides the security breadth and depth for protecting your entire network, while reducing the high deployment and operations costs and complexities associated with managing multiple point products.

Cisco ASA: All-in-One Firewall, IPS, and VPN Adaptive Security Appliance is a practitioner’s guide to planning, deploying, and troubleshooting a comprehensive security plan with Cisco ASA. The book provides valuable insight and deployment examples and demonstrates how adaptive identification and mitigation services on Cisco ASA provide a sophisticated security solution for both large and small network environments.

The book contains many useful sample configurations, proven design scenarios, and discussions of debugs that help you understand how to get the most out of Cisco ASA in your own network.

“I have found this book really highlights the practical aspects needed for building real-world security. It offers the insider’s guidance needed to plan, implement, configure, and troubleshoot the Cisco ASA in customer environments and demonstrates the potential and power of Self-Defending Networks.”

–Jayshree Ullal, Sr. Vice President, Security Technologies Group, Cisco Systems®

This security book is part of the Cisco Press® Networking Technology Series. Security titles from Cisco Press help networking professionals secure critical data and resources, prevent and mitigate network attacks, and build end-to-end self-defending networks.

Excellent reference book. I wouldn't want to curl up with a cup of hot cocoa and read it from beginning to end, but it was an essential tool in a recent firewall migration at my workplace. It also seems to be just about the only book about the relatively new asa platform.

This book helped me a lot. I recently deployed over 250 ASAs and was running into a lot of problems with the IPS SSM and VPN features. I got most of my answers from this book.

What a waste of time it was reading this book. If you are not very familiar with FW/IPS or VPN then this may be helpful, but if you have been working with this technology and Cisco's products that address these technologies (ASA, PIX, IPS, VPN3k) then please don't refer to this joke. Go online to cisco.com and do the research. Sometimes it felt as if whitepapers were copied and pasted.

                          Very dissapointed.
