Book Description
It would be impossible to talk about the great college football teams and not include the mind-boggling exploits of Bud Wilkinson and his great Oklahoma Sooners teams. In his seventeen years as the Sooners' head coach, Wilkinson amassed a 145-29-4 record. Included in that span were separate winning streaks of 31 and 47 games, three national titles, four undefeated seasons, and thirteen consecutive conference championships. His career .826 winning percentage surpassed that of other coaching legends whose careers overlapped his, such as Woody Hayes and Paul "Bear" Bryant. It wasn't just the steady stream of victories and titles, however, that distinguished Wilkinson in a profession dominated by Type-A personalities and Xs-and-Os savants. Tall, blond, handsome, charming, and soft-spoken, Wilkinson was well-liked and would have fit well into today's media-driven model of the "successful coach." A star quarterback at the University of Minnesota, Wilkinson emerged as a sports star who wasn't just an athlete. He earned a master's degree in English from Syracuse University and later pioneered the role of football-coach-turned-expert-television-analyst, beginning in the early fifties with his own coach's show at Oklahoma. He later achieved a different kind of notoriety in the sixties and seventies as a network-television commentator. Along the way, he also took a foray into politics and a brief return to coaching in the late seventies with the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals. I Remember Bud Wilkinson is the newest in the popular I Remember series, offering hundreds of anecdotes and memories of Wilkinson by dozens of people who knew him. Sources include former players, fellow coaches, television personalities, friends, and others. This comprehensive work goes into the locker room, between the white lines, and behind the scenes to explore and explain what made the multitalented, innovative Wilkinson a legend in his own time and beyond.

Great book about Bud and college football.......2007-04-01
Bud Wilkinson's name isn't mentioned with college football coaching legends like Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Paul 'Bear' Bryant, Woody Hayes, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner or Tom Osborne, but it should be. Wilkinson became a head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners in 1947 at the young age of 31. Seventeen years later he retired from coaching in 1963 at age 47 after winning three national titles in 1950,1955, and 1956.
Along with the titles, his coaching career included one win streak of 31 games and another spanning over four years at a record-holding 47 games. (So, how does won go on a 47-game winning streak and only win two national titles? The answer is in the book.) At one point Wilkinson's win/loss record stood at a incredible 94-5-2 over 101 games - a feat that will never be duplicated.
'I Remember Bud Wilkinson' isn't a book about Bud Wilkinson's life as told by the author. Instead the story of Wilkinson's life is told by the people who knew him throughout his life. Included are comments from notable names such as Curt Gowdy, Keith Jackson, Barry Switzer, Jim Hart, and Ara Parseghian.
The first part of the book contains stories from coaches and players during his career at Oklahoma. We are treated with several anecdotes about Wilkinson's coaching philosophy from how he handled his players to how he organized his practices. The stories give the reader a good idea of who Bud Wilkinson was as a person and how he developed the Sooners into the stuff of legend. At times, the stories are inspiring and may serve as guidance to young people - I realize this sounds a bit corny - on how to conduct themselves.
The stories after Wilkinson retired from coaching and became a broadcaster tend to be more light-hearted. You're treated to a different side of Wilkinson and simultaneously what the early days in college football broadcasting were like.
Some of the better ones include:
* Keith Jackson recalling an experience when Bear Bryant was to assist in a broadcast. Bryant showed up 'pretty well greased', commented very little and eventually ended up nodding off while Wilkinson was forced to work him in and out of the broadcast.
* Barry Switzer telling a story about how Wilkinson spent the night in a hotel room serving drinks to Woody Hayes, Bob Devaney, Bear Bryant, and Duffy Daugherty.
* How a television cue mix-up lead to the Air Force Falcon flying off before the broadcast started. How another mistake left Wilkinson and fellow broadcaster Chris Schenkel shouting over the top of a marching band at the beginning of the first Peach Bowl broadcast.
The last part of the book deals with Wilkinson's two-year with the St Louis Cardinals as a NFL head coach. Stories here relate why Wilkinson failed, how the Cardinals were run as an organization. The end of the book includes "In His Own Words" - which weren't nearly as interesting as the other stories throughout the book. The book then concludes with a history of Wilkinson's win/loss record throughout his career.
'I Remember Bud Wilkinson' is a pretty fun read. It's also an easy read. The stories are interesting whether they're about football, broadcasting or Wilkinson's short-lived NFL career. You get a full view of his life and an understanding of the world in which he lived. The book isn't just for Oklahoma Sooners fans - it's for anyone who would like to know more about college football history and one of the greatest unsung coaches to shape the game.
Get real.......2004-12-19
I have always had great respect for Bud Wilkinson as a football coach and as a leader of men, I did not need to read a book where everyone who speaks of him lauds him needlessly and dumps sugar all over his legacy. I read "The Undefeated" by Jim Dent. It was all about Coach Wilkinson and his fabled OU football program. THAT, was a brutally honest account of the REAL Bud Wilkinson. I DO want to read about the real man that Coach Wilkinson was, not some perfect "god". I have total respect for Coach Wilkinson, no matter what human imperfections he may have had. I did enjoy "I Remember Bud Wilkinson", but it was WAY too candy-coated. If you're looking for an HONEST portrait of Coach Wilkinson, you won't find it in this book.
I Remember Bud Wilkinson.......2003-05-02
It is a fun book to read because it tells the reader how Bud Wilkinson was a football coach for young men that only players on so many other teams could only dream about. Bud Wilkinson was a coach who enjoyed the game and enjoyed practice aand he let his players do the same!

The best DVD guide.......2007-07-26
We are HUGE movie buffs at our house, and to gain knowledge and reference I've owned everyone of these guides since they first hit the scene in the 90's. Comprehensive in its width and breadth, with excellent objective reviews. Additionally, the cast and directors lists are top notch.
A must have for movie lovers.......2007-07-06
I have an early version of this book and it is just about falling apart from the all use it has gotten over the years. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone and it will always be the only review book I buy.
I also like the fact that the authors clearly have a passion for movies of every genre and that translates on every single page. I am highly grateful to the authors because based on their reviews alone I have discovered and enjoyed many movies I might otherwise never have watched.
I have found that these books make great gifts as well. Don't hesitate to buy one; you'll get your money's worth and a lot of enjoyment too.
Good but..........2007-06-21
I often use this book as a reference to as when the movie was made, who directed, and who starred. In the back of the book, a very comprehensive list of stars with movies they did and list of directors with movies they did. I find that a very useful resource since I want to make a link between who and what title pretty fast. There are lots of titles contained in the book, and one best part of the book...when new titles are added in the book annually, you get to see the bullet next to the title, indicating it's a new addition to the book. Then, the following year, it will be removed. If you think about it, you buy the book, read the whole book, make a list of movies you want to see, no matter how many titles, and then done. Now, what happens next year when the authors release the new edition? See what I am talking about? You save time by looking for the bullets and go from there without having to read the whole book again for additions. Now, cons of the book. It's not that comprehensive. There are many titles missing in the book, yet it got at least 20,000 movies titles. Expect the common movie titles in the book, expect fairly known titles for 50/50 of the time, and don't expect obscure film titles in the book. Another part that I dislike about the book is the reviews. Many are insightful, but some are quite misleading. Think about it: (from 5 stars being best to turkey) "Forrest Gump" gets 5 stars while "Pulp Fiction" gets 4 stars and "Shawshank Redemption" 4 stars. "Pink Flamingos", "Gummo", and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" got 2 stars, turkey, and turkey respectively. "Lassie Comes Home" got 4 stars. "Mad Max" got 3 1/2 stars. You get my point? The authors are pretty narrow minded when it comes to judging movies objectively. Anyway, the pros outweigh the cons for film buffs, but for family, it's most suitable if they are knuckleheads about movies.
Great book.......2007-06-10
I get this book every year, just a great book for movie lovers, has all the movies that are on dvd and video, names of all the actors, and names of directors
Very Useful Movie Guide.......2007-05-17
I use this book often to decide which movies to rent or watch on television. Also there is a cast and director index in the back of the book which comes in handy.I have purchased other movie review books in the past.I would have to say that this one is my favorite.

Halliwell's Film Video and TV Guide.......2007-08-25
I consider this the best film guide available. When I was in England I would always buy the latest edition of what was then known as HALLIWELL'S FILM GUIDE. Alas, Leslie Halliwell is no longer with us, but John Walker does an excellent job of revising and updating the guide, and I am delighted it is still being published. It is a treasure trove of information.
No movie to TV or TV to movie crossover.......2007-08-23
I have tried several examples where a movie became a TV series; NOTHING. I have tried several examples where a TV series became a movie; NOTHING. If Star Gate 1 the mega successful TV series is not mentioned, but the so so Movie that it was based on is, there is a problem.
Or take Star Trek, the TV show is not mentioned, just the movies, even the bad ones.
This is not half as good a book as it used to be; when Halliwell was alive.
John Walker needs to do a MUCH better crossover between the two media.
God Bless, God is Still Speaking,

Look what's under the counter.......2005-08-24
Dian Hanson's fourth history of adult magazines covers the stuff that wasn't on the newsstands. A whole range of titles (least in the US) was only for buying in the adult bookstore or the local liquor store. This rather restricted distribution actually enabled publishers to offer fairly explicit editorial content without worrying about who might be offended. The book has several chapters devoted to American titles with hundreds of covers and inside photos. I was rather impressed with the number of first issue covers shown though I expect many of them never got to a second edition.
Whether the titles were sold in adult bookstores or on Main Street (volume three covers that market) the cover lines were the same, suggestive come-ons and heavy use of the word 'Sexsational'. The titles could be a lot more explicit although there are only so many words to describe the contents: Raw, Pagan, Snap, Sheer, Boudoir, Pleasure, Sassy, Highball, Gusto, Vixen, Tip Top, Thigh, Slip & Garter, Nylon Mood oh and don't forget the old favorite, anything ending with ...O-Rama, like Leg-O-Rama.
Each chapter has a short essay (in English, German and French) followed by plenty of photos. Elmer Batters the leg connoisseur, Irving Klaw: Mister Bondage or Milt Luros, who gave the Californian slicks a lift, are some of the personalities of the period that get a chapter each. Europe has some coverage, especially Harrison Marks in England with his digest-size titles. Considering that Ms Hanson has worked in the adult mag business for some years and obviously knows the market I was surprised to find very little technical detail about the magazines, like their circulation, profitability or distribution.
I mentioned in my review of the first two volumes that I felt that the paper quality should have been better and this applies to this edition. The images are in 175dpi but they tend to soften when printed on this matt stock, especially the full-page color covers.
Still, this book covers a vibrant period of the adult magazine market with plenty of visual stuff to support the text.

!st edition, why no reprints!!!!!.......1999-10-07
Shadowbeat has information on underground trid pirates and all that media stuff that plays into everyday life! No other SR sourcebook has yet to include any of this information. Think how much you would miss if you had no media influences in your life, now think how much your SR campaign is missing!
the Holy Grail of Shadowrun Sourcebooks.......1998-08-26
Shadowbeat is IMHO one of the best sorcebooks ever published by FASA. It covers the nitty gritty stuff mentioned in other sourcebooks (like Seattle) like Urban Brawl teams and Simsense recording. Combine this with new rules for being a Rocker, and a boatload of other stuff, and you've got a soucebook well worth tracking down. A must for any GM looking to put a little more spice and depth into thier SR game.

great way to learn SAS.......2006-01-20
This package, software and booklet, provides a great and affordable tool for leaning SAS. Unlike most educationally priced software, SAS LE does not require you to be a student in a degree granting program, and/or prove it with a student ID. Personally I am very impressed by the fact that SAS recognizes that "official" students are not the only ones trying to learn on a budget. The software is limited in that you can only display and process the first 1000 rows of your dataset, however this will be sufficient for most of the intended audience for this product, who are simply interested in learning how to use SAS. Another drawback is that the software expires, and will apparently not operate after December 1, 2008, so the value of the product diminishes with time before you buy it. The enclosed booklet is helpful, but not very in-depth, and you will probably want to buy the little SAS book or some other resource to get the most out of this product. You can see what procedures the software is capable of at support.sas.com/le, and there are some links to additional resources there too. For those who used the first edition of this software, you will probably be pleased to know that the annoying cartoon genie help character is gone, which makes the interface look a lot more professional if nothing else. Overall this is a great educational tool for learning SAS, and I highly recommend it.
SAS Learning Edition 2.0 (SAS/EG 2.0 & SAS 8.2).......2005-09-08
The SAS Institute has finally released a limited (record limit and expiration date) version that is affordable to anyone.
If you want to brush up on old job skills or pick up some new job skills - this is an excellent tool for just that. Employees with SAS experience are fairly difficult to find - on either a contractor or direct hire basis. While the expiration date was set (@ something like) 4 years from the original release of this product - it would have been nice for a 'floating' 4 year time period (from original install) - at the price it certainly isn't a deal breaker. The most commonly (mainstream) used SAS Modules are included - and +95% of SAS Code migrates between OS without any change. So, you can use this on a Windows PC - and apply what you've learned at work on Unix, MVS, CMS, or any of the other gazillion or so OS. About 10 years ago - I created a SAS program to generate Web Page 'indexes' for (Digitized) Rolls of Film or (other) Digital Images. The end result is a CD you can view/select/print photos with a simple Web Browser. While it runs in about 30 seconds each time - it's nice to be able to do this at home rather than in the office - or rewriting the program in another (more affordable or stand alone) language.
Underwhelming.......2005-08-04
Make no mistake about it, SAS is a great product. But this CD and manual leave alot to be desired. The SAS webpage made it sound like this SAS|LE 2.0 CD would be robust, but with limitations to the amount of records you can use (to prevent it from being used instead of the real product). That is what I wanted: an app that taught me many of the features from SAS|base, SAS|stat and SAS|graph. It turns out SAS Learning Edition is a very stripped down SAS|base. The only thing it teaches is where to find the menus on the User Interface. The few simple descriptive statistics that you can put together are done just as easily in Excel or in free spreadsheet packages.
If Mr. Goodnight wants more people to use his subscription-based products, he is going to have to motivate his people to put together something better. I want SAS|LE to help reduce the learning curve of the real product and show me which features each module has with samples. What you are paying $79 for here is little more than a kiosk DEMO disk.
Great way to learn SAS!.......2005-07-20
It's a great way to get the product and learn how to use it without spending a lot of money. The help is good but the hardcopy book doesn't have enough info.
Great starting point for proof of concept.........2005-07-19
Very simple, elegant and ready-to-go piece of software with significat capabilities to do proof of concept analysis on your personal machine.
