    Book Description

A collected edition of Longfield's economic contributions with an introduction and bibliography by R.D. Collison-Black. Lectures on Political Economy (1834) formulated a theory of profits determined by the marginal productivity of physical capital and a theory of wages determined by the specific productivity of the laborer. In Lectures on Commerce (1833) Longfield anticipated several later developments in international trade theory. "The three volumes of lectures ... have since been recognized as containing contributions to economic theory of outstanding originality." The New Palgrave. "He overhauled the whole of economic theory and produced a system that would have stood up well in 1890." J.A. Schumpeter History of Economic Analysis

Red Grange was one of the certified heroes of an era that produced the anchors to any sporting hall of fame--Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Bill Tilden, Bobby Jones--but Red Grange and the Rise of Modern Football is no simple exercise in hero-worship. A professor of history at Lamar University, John M. Carroll works to put Grange in perspective against the backdrop of an amazing era--the '20s--and tackle the Galloping Ghost's myth. Still, in Grange's case, the myth remains awfully impressive.

A true superstar, Grange was a reluctant idol, letting his actions speak for him. In an era before big athletic scholarships, Grange paid for his education by delivering ice in the summer, a job that made him stronger than most of the defense men he'd regularly bowl over. As a junior at Illinois, Grange secured his legend with an inconceivable performance against Michigan, running for four touchdowns in the first 12 minutes. Before the final gun sounded--Carroll recounts this, and other games in glorious detail--Grange had added a fifth score on the ground, passed for a sixth, racked up a ridiculous 402 rushing yards on the day, and cemented his reputation. Post college, his all-American drawing power and singular brilliance on the field virtually saved the struggling young NFL; Carroll is quite thorough in his examination of the fledgling league and its odor of "a dirty little business run by rogues." Yet, despite all the fame and celebrity, a flirtation with Hollywood, and a respected post-playing career in the radio booth and various businesses, Grange never escaped his heartland unpretentiousness; he always seemed to know who he was and how he got that way. "I could run," he once said, "and that was the basis of any success I ever had." Because he ran so well, of course, that success evolved into a full-blown legend worthy of Carroll's scrupulous and absorbing examination. --Jeff Silverman

                      Book Description

Before the Super Bowl, before "Monday Night Football," even before the NFL, there was Red Grange. Catapulted into the public eye in 1924 by scoring four touchdowns in twelve minutes for the University of Illinois, the "Galloping Ghost" went on to a trailblazing career as a professional player, Hollywood football idol, and broadcaster. He ranked with Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey in the 1920s as the most heralded figures in America's "golden age of sport," and when Sports Illustrated did a special issue in 1991 on the greatest moments in sports, Grange was selected for the cover.

Grange's star rose in tandem with that of the sport itself. His spectacular performance as a college player coincided with football's evolution into a rallying point of university life, undergirded by post-World War I money, cars, roads, stadiums, and mass media. With a natural talent and down-home image that helped legitimize professional football, Grange became one of the first athlete-heroes and the first major sports figure to serve as a play-by-play broadcast commentator.

John Carroll depicts the career of this softspoken pioneer who helped lift pro football above its reputation as "a dirty little business run by rogues and bargain-basement entrepreneurs." A reluctant celebrity and folk hero, Red Grange stood throughout his life as a symbol of older, rural American values: an unpretentious self-made individual making a mark in a society increasingly controlled by machines, vast corporations, and stifling bureaucracies. His story is an essential element in understanding football's central place in American culture.

This book does a great job of giving interesting detail and thoughtful perspective so you can see how an individual fit into the times and how the events of the single life mirrored the larger developments in society. You learn a lot about football, about men of that era and what character traits they valued, and about the role of the media and it's use of celebrity to create an audience. I enjoyed this so much I bought another Carroll book on a different early football hero - Fritz Pollard - and that is just as informative and insightful.

This is a readable, well-researched book. Carroll tells how Grange rose to become one of America's first true superstars and how he left school early to join the then-disrespected ranks of pro football. While scholarly, a feeling for a truly humble man shines through.

My father always talked about Red Grange. I never really knew who he was. This book brings everything into perspective. Mr. Carroll captures the essence of Red Grange, but more than that, he makes clear why Grange was the most important college player of this century and how he created the momentum which led to the explosion of pro football

                          Book Description

This book critically examines the long established tradition of adapting classic novels to film or TV screen, encompassing novelists from Jane Austen to Michael Ondaatje. The early cinema ransacked literature for stories suitable for retelling in moving pictures, and as the art of the cinema matured, and cinematography, music, special effects and sound were improved, the art of dramatization began to produce high quality versions of respected novels. The authors in this book analyze a wide variety of literary dramatizations.

The field of adaptation studies has been stuck in the infernal loop of useless case studies for decades. Researchers after researchers produce articles comparing a book and its adaptation, more often than not concluding that the book is better and that the novel has got "brutally butchered". Fine. But then what?

FROM PAGE TO SCREEN follows meticulously this non-productive way of doing research that does not seem to accumulate any knowledge whatsoever. Instead, the writers seem more interested in defending their precious Academy against the "brutal forces" of brainless mass media, forgetting the point of film adaptation research altogether. (In fact, the Introduction by Sheen does state clearly that "adaptation encapsulates the dilemma of institutional identity"). And this, indeed, is what FROM PAGE TO SCREEN is really about - not film adaptation.

The point of a book on film adaptation should be, of course, to study the adaptations impassionately, and conclude something about what film adaptation is, how it relates to the surrounding society and how exactly the adaptations themselves work. Instead, the articles include several highly biased views on film, including a "fact" about the "congenital inattention of audiences" that forces "most violent compressions and excisions" in the adaptation (as Inglis puts it). And Selby praises the adaptation for carefully rendering a Hardy novel page by page even though the strict textual fidelity "seems to slow the film almost to a stop". Would anyone else but Selby himself consider that a good thing in a film?

In other words, the articles suggest almost non-existent knowledge of film and how it works and affects its viewers. Surely the writers are proficient in analysing literature, but are they proficient film "readers" and well-informed in the processes and the history of film? No, they are not.

They seemingly have not realised that what works on the pages of a book, does not work as such on screen. Yet they insist on textual fidelity and judge harshly any deviations that the adaptors might have made. Thus, the conclusion again is the classic "the book is better". And again, one is forced to ask: "Really? ...And?"

There are a couple of informative articles in the collection, however (such as Sinyard's article on A PASSAGE TO INDIA). Yet, if you are looking for unbiased writings about film adaptation, some theoretical relevance or interesting findings, go look elsewhere.

(I suggest getting Sarah Cardwell's ADAPTATION REVISITED (2002) for starters. Cardwell has some fresh ideas to present while concentrating on other aspects than keeping the academic fort and defending the oh-so-precious literary classics against the brutality of the outside world and the ugly proceedings of the greedy film industry.)

The unquestioned "book good, film bad" attitude of the majority of the writers in FROM PAGE TO SCREEN does not quite meet the realities of today. By realities I mean concepts such as intertextuality, which is gaining more and more prominence in research nowadays. And intertextuality is - as terrifying as it must be for Giddings et al. - slowly but surely breaking the barriers between "high" and "low" culture.

                            Book Description

U.S. Orientalisms is the first extensive and politicized study of nineteenth century American discourses that helped build an idea of nationhood with control over three "Orients": the "Barbary" Orient; the Orient of Egypt; and the Orient of India. Malini Johar Schueller persuasively argues that current notions about the East can be better understood as latter-day manifestations of the earlier U.S. visions of the Orient refracted variously through millennial fervor, racial-cultural difference, and ideas of Westerly empire.
This book begins with an examination of the literature of the "Barbary" Orient generated by the U.S. Algerian conflict in the late eighteenth century in the works of such writers as Royall Tyler, Susanna Rowson, and Washington Irving. It then moves on to the Near East Orientalist literature of the nineteenth century in light of Egyptology, theories of race, and the growth of missionary fervor in writers such as John DeForest, Maria Susanna Cummins, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, and Harriet Prescott Spofford. Finally, Schueller considers the Indic Orientalism of the period in the context of Indology, British colonialism, and the push for Asian trade in the United States, focusing particularly on Emerson and Whitman. U.S. Orientalisms demonstrates how these writers strove to create an Orientalism premised on the idea of civilization and empire moving West, from Asia, through Europe, and culminating in the New World.
Schueller draws on the work of Michel Foucault, Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, Rey Chow, and Judith Butler and compellingly demonstrates how a raced, compensatory "Orientalist" discourse of empire was both contested and evoked in the literary works of a wide variety of writers. The book will be of interest to readers in American history, postcolonial studies, gender studies, and literary theory.
Malini Johar Schueller is Associate Professor, Department of English, University of Florida. She is the author of The Politics of Voice: Liberalism and Social Criticism from Franklin to Kingston.

This book is the right size, has the right depth of content and, in the main, is easy to follow and understand. It covers the basic conventions, putting names to plays that most players only know the basics of. It also provides some titilating trivia about the people who came up with the conventions in the first place. I enjoyed this book, found it useful, and am now looking to purchase others in the series - there are eight others. I recommend this one.

                              Description:
This paper explores the evolution of a simple traffic convention concerning the side of the road on which to drive. This agent-based simulation probes some of the deeper conceptual issues involved in the evolution of conventions, particularly the nature of rational decision-making and its possible reliance upon habit. The simulations show that the systemic convergence to a left/right convention is often improved or sustained by habit, alongside other ''intelligent'' and calculative attributes of agents. We show that habit formation is part of a possible mechanism of ''reconstitutive downward causation'' among agents where the preferences of each agent are partly malleable.

                                        Book Description

If you've ever wondered "How'd they do that?" you're about to find out!

Inspired by the column of the same name in Photoshop User magazine, Photoshop CS Classic Effects show you exactly how to do the same special effects you see every day in magazines, on TV, in the newspaper and on the Web. These are "The Classics"--those tried and true effects that are every where--and for a lot of professional photographers and designers, these effects are their bread and butter (as you'll see inside the book). It's not the wild stuff, it's not the weird stuff--it's the stuff you can really use--the stuff clients always ask for (and expect that you'll know).

                                        How it works

Scott Kelby, Editor of Photoshop User magazine and author of a string of bestselling Photoshop books (including Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks, and The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers) takes these classic techniques and shows you how they're used by today's industry's leading professionals. You'll learn step-by-step how to build complete projects, from start to finish, so you can put these Classic Effects to work for you today. You¿ll learn classic photographic effects, type effects, commercial and advertising effects, and the special effects the pros turn to first to get the job done fast!

                                        What Makes it a "Classic"

Over the years certain Photoshop special effects have become so popular they've become classics, much in the same way certain songs, or certain cookbook recipes have become classics. For example, if you bought a book of "Classic Recipes" you'd expect that it would include some kick butt recipes for spaghetti sauce, apple pie, buttermilk pancakes, meatloaf, tomato soup, and a wide range of classic dishes, right? Right. So would you expect to find some wild new culinary explorations from Wolfgang Puck in a Classic Recipes book? Not a chance. Instead you'd find the "meat and potatoes" recipes that are used every day by great cooks all over the world. Well, my friends, that's what you¿re holding--a book of kick butt "meat and potatoes" special effects, the same ones used by great Photoshop photographers and designers all over the world.

                                        MTV or CBS?

Here's the thing: if your client is MTV, you can go out and do all the latest, wildest, weirdest effects and they love it. But what if your client is CBS or CNN? Try that stuff and they'll show you the door. They need a professional, clean look, and they'll expect you to know the classics and how they're used today. That's what this book is all about--teaching you the handy bag of tricks that you can use again and again.

Even good cooks open cookbooks for their favorite recipes. Scott Kelby makes it easy to access your favorite effects. In fact, he does it twice, once in full form, and again at the end in a "cut to the chase" cheatsheet. I was going to wait and see if he updated this CS version for CS3, but I'm glad I didn't wait. Like all of his Photoshop books, instructions are full-color and broken into logical steps.
