Customer Reviews:
Changed my thinking.......2006-12-20
I was first introduced to THE LONG HAUL as a consequence of teaching a community organization course for which I had not been assigned for over 20 years. I felt I was out of my element. In seeking to prep myself for this course, I consulted key people in the US and my local community. I was prodded to read THE LONG HAUL. I must admit I was not enthusiastic. BIG MISTAKE!
After 30 years of reading social science research monographs, research proposals, dissertations, MSW theses, and textbooks, I would say that THE LONG HAUL is one of the most (and perhaps the most) profoundly important piece of literature I have read addressing the social service arena. Although it is an autobiography, it offers critical insight into the failure of social service delivery. Prior to reading THE LONG HAUL, I believed that the major failure of sociology and social work was the inability to construct a meaningful theory of cultural diversity. Social work's failure to shepherd recipients off of TANF is associated with a lack of cultural understanding. Clearly, what we need is a theory for guidance.
In his autobiography, Myles Horton takes us to the threshold of theory construction. Much of what "works" is counterintuitive. For example, if the police are monitoring Horton's actions because the authorities fear he will instigate a communist upraising, Horton will seek out the police. He would thank them for escorting him to his destination and explain to them his plans. The police move into a state of utter confusion. They are put in a position where they must walk with him rather then concealing themselves. Clearly, he knows what he is doing, but is unable to explain his actions that would enable readers to generalize these actions. The capacity of generalize and to use this generalization for an alternative environment is the heart of sociological theory. We learn how society functions by identifying patterns and see if they exist (or work) in other arenas.
Perhaps theory construction is not possible. Perhaps cultural influences are so uniquely situated that a generalization from one arena to another is not possible. What is the common theme found in all of Horton's successes? I think the answer is LISTENING. However, Horton's form of listening is not the type of listening I was taught nor the kind of listening I read in cutting edge research and respected textbooks. It is, in fact, NOT the empathic listening. I do not believe that words exists which capture the essence of this type of Horton's listening, but I believe the concept of "blind" listening comes close. In addition, sociological frameworks such as Interactionalism and Phenomenology employ terms like "bracketing." Bracketing comes close, but does not hit the bull's eye. Social workers must spend more time understanding Horton's methodology of listening, analyzing what he heard, and acting upon his analysis.
I do not recall reading any book that had such a profound effect on my thinking. This autobiography is not merely the story of Myles Horton's life but rather a roadmap for improved social service delivery and empowerment. Every social worker should read this book -- even clinicians. In fact, I would say that any social work student who does not thoroughly enjoy this book, needs to change majors.
If you are interested in Leadership, Inspiration and Transformation READ THIS BOOK.......2006-07-28
This book gave me a sense of clarity regarding my own values and beliefs when it comes to creating and sustaining learning relationships with others. It also lit a fire in my heart for the work...the work of developing learning and instruction in ways that are truly empowering of others. It was a jolt of energy in my own life journey. I'm humbled and grateful to have been introduced to the ideas and life of Mr. Horton - as well as the story of the Highlander learning community. Social change will always be a natural outcome of true learning and instruction in a world that confirms its being alive through the ever-changing, interdependent evolution of its cultural soceity. Change is good.
A fairy tale.......2006-01-31
This is more propoganda. Checkout the FBI's research first.
Vandalism, threats, strikes, and lies. That is the Highlander Story.

an inspiring memoir of struggle.......2005-10-04
This is a wonderful, engaging narrative of a life devoted to the struggle for justice, peace and freedom. In plain language, with humility, wit, and vigor, Horton recounts experiences, insights, and anecdotes gathered in his many years as an organizer and popular educator with the Highlander folk school in Tennessee, from the industrial union drives in the 30s, through the civil rights movement, and beyond. The book positively glows with Horton's courage, compassion, and intelligence.
A lesson to Learn Now More than Ever.......2004-03-08
How a group of caring people can be transformed into a catalyst for social change. Myles Horton, and threads of the humanity who made up the Highlander School, championed the Appalachian working class, empowering them to stand up to the factory owners and politicians who used their lack of education against them. By respecting the knowledge and intelligence of the poorest, Mr. Horton was able to win the proud mountain people's respect and trust and help them to understand the foundations of the democracy within which they lived.
This book has a great deal to teach about democracy, about learning, about our society's prejudices built on race, sex and education. It is a book about inspiration, about defining and learning about your own beliefs and where you stand on important issues that effect all of humanity today. Read this book for the history, to learn about the strength of a man and a group who followed their beliefs...but you will find yourself, in the end, learning about yourself.

Meet "Lonesome Len," the "Pistol Packin' Partner," and "Tiny" in these fun, engaging tales which reflect unusual events and humourous predicaments experienced by the author during his impressive trucking career.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh out loud!.......2003-07-07
Any book that can make me laugh is worth a minimum of three stars. Don McTavish uses up 165 paperback pages to give a humorous glimpse into various forms of trucking, from his early days as a teenage yard boy, through to obtaining his driving licence, oil patch work, logging and high-mile hauling. Any trucker can relate to the stories and any enthusiast or persons seaking a career change and considering entering the industry will gain some useful advice and insight and plenty of laughs along the way.
Although the cover depicts a Mack, much of Dan's material involves transport in the sixties and beyond, much of it spent in Kenworths, including team driving a 1960 cabover KW with twin gearboxes.
For some old-school trucking fun, nostalgia, and a mix of diverse characters and experiences, this book is a gem.

Product Description
CRST International, a pioneer in the American trucking industry, has transported goods throughout the United States for over 50 years. With more than 5,000 employees, CRST has grown considerably since its early days headquartered in an Iowan chicken coop. Founded by Herald Smith Jr. in 1955, CRST initially filled empty livestock rigs with steel shipments from Chicago to Cedar Rapids. Through adroit acquisitions, the company rapidly expanded its collection of franchises. It is now the leading trucking company in Iowa and one of the largest in the country. CRST is a lesson in the payoffs of calculated risk and the success that a company can attain under creative leadership. Whether challenged by competitors, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), or by market fluctuations, CRST has maintained the entrepreneurial drive necessary to succeed. CRST has taken on struggling franchises, turning them into successful enterprises. It has experienced near-violent confrontation, such as the Teamster Union strike of 1971, surviving to become an even more improved company. When governmental deregulation hit the trucking industry in 1980, CRST increased its revenues by 25 percent despite the overwhelming challenge. Shortly thereafter it became only the third carrier in the history of the United States to receive nationwide transportation authority. Renowned for its safety record and the quality of its drivers, CRST has acquired a reputation for security and reliability. Under the current leadership of Herald Smiths son, John, CRST has continued to grow and earn accolades within the industry. In it for the Long Haul: The Story of CRST is a journey through half a century of American trucking and a testament to the ingenuity, drive, and determination of the CRST team.

Great Biography of an Exceptional Person.......2003-07-23
Let me first disclose that I am a little biased in my review because the subject of this biography is my grandfather. For those of you considering reading this book I highly recommend it if you're interested in learning about a spectacular story of entrepreneurial success. I am an avid reader of business-related biographies and I can attest that this is near the top. In addition, the biography accounts for John Ruan's entire life to date, with details of his childhood, his family and related hardships, the founding of his many business, details on the inner-workings of those businesses and his many community/charitable efforts (the most notable of which is the World Food Prize). In all, the book sums up a man of tremendous impact in both Iowa, the U.S. as well as the world. John Ruan, as you will come to note after reading this book, is a unique individual whose 90+ years have had an exceptionally positive impact in our community, and in business. In my opinion, John Ruan truly embodies some of the fundamental principles upon which the United States was founded; the opportunity to achieve through hard work. On a final point, upon picking up the book, I read it straight through in four hours. Again, I highly recommend reading the book.

12 months of magic and memories from the movie.......2003-03-14
Ooooooooo-kay, I've never reviewed a calendar before, so let's see how this goes.
The twelve months portray scenes that are in near chronological order of the movie and starts from Harry and Ron's trip in the flying car. The photos are from key points in the movie, such as the Gryffindor vs. Slytherin Quidditch match, with Harry and Draco facing each other like a Rocky poster. With the exception of June, Harry is in each month. June is Fawkes's honorary month. Key text is included, describing the photo or theme.
There is an object in the foreground, off to the side of each month in keeping with the theme of the picture, be it Hedwig, the Polyjuice Potion, the Sorting Hat, or Ron's cellotaped wand.
By the way, as a bonus treat, inbetween the picture of Fawkes and the June months, there is a special page with eighteen stickers. What stickers? Well, framed portraits of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, the Hogwarts badge, Fawkes's head, Hedwig, the Golden Snitch, three coins (a Galleon, Knut, and Sickle), the respective symbols of each house (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff, along with their respective animals), the brown case containing the quaffle and bludgers, a glass of polyjuice potion, something that looks like a starfish inside a jar, presumably Ron and Harry's luggage, sundry chemicals, and the logo for the movie.
For what this year is turning out to be, Harry and company is one surefire antidote for not evoking a much-needed do-over clause for bad years.
Beautiful Calendar for a great price.......2002-11-20
This 2003 installment of the Harry Potter movie calendar is much nicer than the 2002 version. The pictures are much crisper and the photographic composition better captures the emotion of various scenes from the movie. A bonus with this calendar is the set of 18 stickers that are included. These stickers (on silver background) include pictures of Ron, Harry, Hermione, Fawkes, Hedwig, and the 4 house crests, among others. This calendar makes a handsome, colorful wall display.

Book Description
Microsoft Outlook Programming unleashes the power of Microsoft Outlook, allowing administrators and end users to customize Outlook in the same way that they've used macros and templates to customize other programs like Excel and Word. Experienced developers will find the quick-start information they need to begin integrating Outlook into their applications. Microsoft Exchange administrators will get help automating common tasks such as announcing public folders and importing data to custom forms.
Microsoft Outlook is the most widely used email program, and it offers the most programmability. This book introduces key concepts for programming both Outlook forms for storing and exchanging data and Visual Basic for Applications modules that add new features to Outlook. Central to this new edition, which covers both Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002, is awareness of tighter security in Outlook. Designed to prevent transmission of computer viruses, the security restrictions can also get in the way of legitimate programs, but this book offers workarounds within the reach of novice programmers. It also covers many of the new features of Outlook 2002, such as the integrated Outlook View Control and searching across multiple folders using SQL syntax and the Search object.
· Building block procedures for the most common Outlook programming tasks
· Jargon-free language and practical examples to make the material more accessible to new Outlook programmers
· Coverage of Outlook Email Security Update
· Coverage of the Office XP Web Services Toolkit

The "go to" book for Outlook programming and scripting.......2007-07-29
Sue Mosher has long been considered an industry expert in Microsoft Outlook. In this volume she continues her endless giving to the Outlook community by sharing much of her expertise in the area of writing code in VBA and VBScipt that interacts with the product on various levels. Plenty of code samples and brilliant explanations of concepts make this a must read for anyone considering any Outlook programming, whether serious or casual.
Detailed enough for my VBA level.......2007-03-17
Good examples for medium VBA level. The first part is for beginners, so someone can be disappointed , but going on I found a lot of things I didn't know. Lots of images. Maybe I prefered a CD with a little more code. I notice I can't give 5 stars because I've had some problems with English language, that's not my language, so I can't say it's a simple book, but it's my fault.

(REAL NAME)
Look the book has a good index - I know because I have had to use it a lot because the author REGULARLY USES TERMS BEFORE DEFINING THEM which I hate! In fact terms are not really defined well at all leaving the user wandering like a blind man trying to understand an elephant by touch. Here you learn about one object.method, there another object.method or property but no understanding of the overall hierarchy is given. Sadly this is typical in manuals that attempt to explain a framework of objects, properties, and methods. But my money and time deserve better than this.
Pointing people to the online object browser is not good enough - that gives none of the "why" behind the object hierachy which is the real value behind its design (there is a "why" isn't there Microsoft?). For a good example of how to do this for Outlook take a look at Martin Green's excellent free online Oulook case-study: [...]. Notice how he defines objects - that is the right way to teach.
Also the editing is lacking; here is a typical example from Ch10.3 - 'Among the useful things you can do with CDO are delete an Outlook item permanently, rather than send it to the Deleted Items folder, and open a Select Names dialog, asking the user to choose recipients. You will look at the first task in this chapter and then work with the Select Names dialog in Chapter 14, "Working with Items and Recipients," after you become familiar with recipient concepts. CDO can also expose many more properties of individual items and folders than Outlook can, making it possible to perform tasks that otherwise seem impossible."
1. Note the attention-deficit-inducing use of comma-separated phrases in the first sentence. It is typical, and obfuscatory.
2. That first sentence also just tells you about two things you can do with CDO objects - two of many. Instead give the "why" of the object and then outline the few key methods, then use the method. Its worked for decades for every serious educational and technical text. Leave the stream-of-conciousness form to the auteurs of the liberal arts where they can do no harm.
3. Sentence two in the above quote predicts what you will do; I assure you this is as weird as it reads appearing completely out of the blue. Just a prediction with no preamble, reasoning, or, indeed, information.
4. Sentence three in the above quote says something "seems impossible." What that impossible thing is is never explained nor how or why it seems impossible.
There is a lot of good material hidden in this book between acres of verbiage. At least there is a good index - that is a real plus. And the author is generous online with help which is why I bought the book - got to respect someone that puts in the hours to help others.
The best Outlook programming book that I know.......2006-11-13
I have not given 5 stars because it is not perfect. One complain is that the first part is too easy and is aimed for total beginners and then there is the second part where a lot of material is presented too fast. I wished that the book spent less time with very basic (pun intended) VBA stuff but takes more time to make the transition to more advanced topics smoother.
Other than that, the book contains a lot of code that can easily be reused.
Very useful book.......2006-03-07
I consult it regularly when I need to do something with Outlook VBA. Its clear, intelligently written, and comprehensive.
