Book Description

Charming English country tales in the tradition of James Herriot

This is a warm, funny and mostly true account of the first year that Gervase Phinn spent as a schools' inspector in North Yorkshire. His brilliantly portrayed cast includes his fellow inspectors who range from endearing to eccentric, sporting lords of the manor, Ministry bigwigs, formidable teaching nuns and a very attractive head-teacher who happens to be single, adding up to an enchanting montage of experiences. But it is the children themselves who steal the show, whether fresh-faced from the farms or worldly-wise from the towns. Gervase Phinn is a born raconteur who has transferred his talents to the written word with outstanding success.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid Character Sketches, Loving Pictures of a Unique Place.......2002-10-03

Phinn clearly loves children, schools and Yorkshire. His pictures of the countryside, of its stalwart but reserved people, and of their dialect, invite favorable comparison with James Herriott. This is a special place, largely unspoiled by McDonalds and internet chat rooms, and that alone is a reason to celebrate while reading the book.

Phinn observes and writes honestly, capturing with equanimity and good humor a range of personalities from child prodigy to tyrannical administrative assistant. Sure, there are dozens of portraits of cute kids who say funny things, and of dedicated teachers who have mastered the ineffable art of educating. These alone are worth the price of the book. But want a trenchant dissection of exactly what makes an annoying person annoying? Phinn lays it out, while maintaining his humor and emotional distance and never conveying any feeling that he is settling old scores.

And yes, there is the thread of his sometimes-stumbling courtship of the alluring Miss Bentley. That also keeps one turning the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Through a teachers eyes.......2000-06-10

Having heard Gervais Phinn talk on an afternoon chat show describing his life as a schools inspector with humour and great dedication I was anxious to read his book "The Other Side of the Dale".

It was one of those texts which you find incredibly difficult to put down. I laughed out loud at his desciptions of answers given by small children and was able to relate them to my own experiences as an infant teacher.

He has the "gift of the gab" and enthralls his readers from the very first chapter.

One can tell by his writing that he is an honest and sincere person whose very love of life is the reason why he does the work he takes great delight in.

He shares every laugh & sometimes tear in a way that is as if he is an old friend and you are together catching up on news and gossip.

His character descriptions are vivid and allow you to picture this wealth of strange colleagues very clearly.

His romance with the "lovely Christine" is a joy to behold and I could hardly contain myself to wait for his second book to find out what happened.

He writes of his experiences with a truthful and interesting style which carries the reader along with him on his journey through country lanes and among the hedgerows of the farming communities where he travelled.

I felt that I was with him as he stood at picture windows looking out on the magnificent and striking views of the Dales.

There is a childlike quality in the way he sees life - it is honest and open. He writes of things he sees with an element of awe and wonder [like a child seeing their first aeroplane, balloon, etc.] and colours the pages with his glorious grasp of language.

I have read this text twice and listened to it being read by the author on audio-tape [A MAGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE! ]

I have also been fortunate to have obtained a copy of his second book "Over Hill and Dale" which is also up there with the best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING [not just for those in education]

First published in 1980, Victim was, and remains, a landmark turning point in the then-newly emerging victim's rights movement. When Gary Kinder (who would achieve even more fame and bestsellerdom in the 1990s with Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea) wrote this littérature vérité account of an execution-style bloodbath during an armed robbery, his emphasis on the victims' perspectives changed the true crime genre forever.

In 1974 two men walked into an Ogden, Utah, music store called the Hi-Fi Shop and took the manager and his assistant hostage while they methodically robbed the store. During the course of the robbery, three other people--16-year-old Cortney Naisbitt, his mother, and the father of the store's manager--walked in by chance and were also taken hostage. Before the end of the ordeal, the hostages would be forced to drink Drano ("It's some kind of German chemical that makes you sleep," one of the killers tells them), one of them would be repeatedly raped, another would have a pencil kicked into his ear with such force that it bulged out at his throat, and three of the hostages would die from close-range gunshot wounds. Naisbitt would effectively spend the rest of his life attempting to recover from brain damage, paralysis, and the loss of his mother, shot dead as she lay on the ground next to him. It's almost incidental to the story to note that the killers were quickly discovered and brought to justice before eventually garnering death sentences. Most of Victim is concerned with Cortney Naisbitt's second-by-second struggle to remain alive ("No Code," an ER physician writes on his chart, meaning no attempts to resuscitate him should he stop breathing), and the equally grim battle of his relatives to tape back together the ripped tapestry of their lives. Utterly compelling from first paragraph to last, this edition contains Kinder's 1990 update. --Tjames Madison

Book Description

Now a classic of true crime, Victim is a compelling and tragic look at how lives can be changed forever by a random act of violence. During an armed robbery, several hostages were brutally tortured, shot in the head, and left for dead. Victim focuses on the members of one family -- including a mother who died after the attack and a son who was left barely alive -- as they fought for his survival and struggled to rebuild their lives. Victim was the first book to go beyond the headlines and statistics about violent crime, to tell the victims' dramatic story of love, loss and courage. It remains one of the most influential books in the victims' rights movement and has become required reading in criminology courses across the country. It may be more relevant now than ever. "Victim is Truman Capote's In Cold Blood turned inside out." -- Newsweek; "Just as Capote did, Kinder has somehow created a story that is truer than true." -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

I am from ogden, utah where the murderes took place and i have never heard anything this inhuman in my life. Three outraged men going in to a store called the HI-FI shops in downtown ogden and taking the lives of 6 people. This is a disgrace. The book was well written and well worded i enjoyed reading this book. I hope other people get a chance to read it. As i thought before i started reading it couldntn be that bad by the end of the book you will have a tear in your eye guarantee. Very good book by gary kinder

5 out of 5 stars Shows what humanity is capable of extreme evil and extreme love.......2006-12-28

I came across this story very by accident on television. I was horrified to realize it was a true story, and had to get the book.
This book is TRUE CRIME from where the prespectve should be...the victim.
In society the victim is delegated to just a name. This book has put a human face on crime and the consequences of crime. This book shows life at the very worst and very best. I commend the family for allowing this very painful story to be told. Cortney was very unfortunate to have had experienced such immense tragedy, however he was tremendously blessed to have such a strong and loving family. I felt such inspiration from Cortney's story and was amazed at what a truly special man his father is. This story is haunting and will not be forgotten. This book shows the power of evil and the power of love and all that can come from both sides of what people are capable of. I pray that this family continues to find peace they so deserve

5 out of 5 stars A page- and stomach-turner.......2006-04-01

I'm a true crime buff and have read countless books that detailed grisly crimes. None have affected me as much as Victim. Kinder's vivid description of the horror that went on in the Hi-Fi Shop was cringe-inducing enough, but the aftermath of the crime was almost unbearably difficult to read. When it comes to most crimes, we read the initial news coverage, we read or hear about the trial (if the perps are caught), and that's it. Thanks to Kinder, I now always wonder about those that have to go on living after the final gavel bangs in the courtroom. Is there any such thing as "closure" for someone whose esophagus is so scarred from drinking Drano that he can't swallow? For someone who saw his son killed in front of his eyes? For those death penalty apologists who pity the perps, keep in mind that the barbarians who committed this crime had three square meals per day and no difficulty in swallowing them until the date of their execution.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-08-18

This is a "must read" book. I found the book so very well
written and then some.

Believe me, the book was so hard to put down once I began reading it, I often found myself staying up until early morning
just to know I completed so many chapters every day.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for law enforcement.......2004-10-04

Regardless of your views on criminal punishment, this book should be on the bookshelf of everyone who works for the justice system. So many books tell us about the lives of the killers, thank god this one is different. When the headlines fade, so often we push crime victims out of our thoughts. This book clearly shows the story doesn't end with the last headline, that the victims live with the ripple effects for decades later of the crimes heaped upon them.
I won't pretend it is a work of priceless literature, but it does provide some priceless insights on how the victims of crimes were, and still are, under-represented and overlooked in the search for headlines. This work is both engaging and a fitting eulogy to the lives it portrays.

It is quite rare to find between the covers of a film book a combination so exact between an interesting and well developed theme and graphic elements of very high caliber. This happens with "The Cinema of Adventure, Romance & Terror", a publication of the American Society of Cinematographers. This is not casual. The book was edited by the late George E.Turner, a staff member of ASC, a Hollywood professional, a special effects artist, animator, journalist, historian and professor. The book also has the valuable contributions of other experts such as Rudy Behlmer, Scott MacQeen, Paul Mandell, George J. Mitchell and Michael H. Price, most of them movie professionals, writers or illustrators. The book captures its reader with the wealth of data it gives on 24 films, and thoroughly covers the interests of any film fan or student. Each film is minutely narrated with information of how it came into being, how it was shot and includes details of the complexities faced. A complete technical file accompanies each film. The reader step by step will be thrust into the magic world of film production whose era is long gone. A vivid and nimble prose together with amazing images will awe the reader. The best techniques in restoring old photographs has been wisely combined with the wit of excellent diagraming and top notch printing. Many of those pictures (336 illustrations) never looked it its era as perfect in their grey values as they do now, and can be admired in this book that casts such a magical spell. Unforgetable Hollywood filmic landmarks such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame","Dracula","Frankestein","Tarzan","Flash Gordon","Rope","Laura","The Night of the Hunter",etc.,reveal their secrets, detail their creation, and show the splendid results obtained. It is a must to own such a book. Don't wait till it is out of print. You owe it to yourself to own a copy and enjoy again and again the legacy those masters left for our awe.

I joke among my friends -- who are almost all obsessed with making it big in the computer industry or the music business -- that Seattle is the land of Microsoft, Microbreweries, and Microcelebrities. David Shields, best known for his novels such as Dead Languages, has written a droll, sometime hilarious, and consistently important factual fiction about this pathological passion for celebrity. Remote seems to be based on the Socratic dictum that the unexamined life is not worth living. But unlike elitist social critics, Shields has had the courage to examine his own fascination with fame, instead of pointing an accusing finger at "them", whoever "they" might be. Like Neil Postman in Amusing Ourselves to Death, Shields seems to argue that it is we ourselves who are to blame for the cargo cult of fame, in which outriggers have been replaced by remote controls as the carriage of choice. Without worshippers, there cannot be deities -- and without channel surfers, there cannot be celebrities.

                Book Description

In this truly one-of-a-kind book, the author/narrator-a representative, in extremis, of contemporary American obsession with beauty, celebrity, transmitted image-finds himself suspended, fascinated, in the remoteness of our wall-to-wall mediascape. It is a remoteness that both perplexes and enthralls him.

Through dazzling sleight of hand in which the public becomes private and the private becomes public, the entire book-clicking from confession to family-album photograph to family chronicle to sexual fantasy to pseudo-scholarly footnote to reportage to personal essay to stand-up comedy to cultural criticism to literary criticism to film criticism to prose-poem to litany to outtake-becomes both an anatomy of American culture and a searing self-portrait.

David Shields reads his own life-reads our life-as if it were an allegory about remoteness and finds persuasive, hilarious, heartbreaking evidence wherever he goes.

5 out of 5 stars The Little Things.......2003-07-14

This book will be of interest to those who notice the little things in life, the things that are hard to miss but always get looked over. Saying what people want to say but may be too afraid to, Shields' book is bold and truthful about the world. The minute detail that instances of his own past and the cultural past of America that are investigated in this book are thought-provoking. A book that anyone could relate to, "Remote" points out the absurdity of everyday life. The everyday things that we all notice but don't quite register are here in this American critique. A book for anyone who has a family, is American, is a subject of humanity will relate to and revel in this insightful quest for resolution, and feel comfort in the fact that we are not alone.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read...should be back in print.......2001-01-15

This is a wonderful and at times wonderous book. Some terrific passages about our celebrity driven culture and our "remoteness." Some of the book is hilarious, some it is sad. I especially liked the section about the allure of women in glasses. Brillant. The passage about David "NYPD Blue" Milch is powerful. Autobiography or allegory or both, this book is unlike anything you have read or will read. It deserves another life back in print.

5 out of 5 stars David Shields' Remote; a memoir of media separateness.......1998-09-16

In "Remote", David Shields tells his own story through the printed and recorded parts of America. One of Shields' central themes is the difference between life and virtual-life: major events in his memory are linked directly to some form of media. His story is based on "almost fame," or as a frequent title explains, "the nimbus of her fame makes a nullity of us all." The idea of media remoteness is explored in amazingly honest detail, often with humor and a delicious taste of irony at the ridiculous. Through his obsession with "the filmed familiar," Oprah, America's Funniest Home Videos, and anecdotes too numerous to mention, Mr. Shields' essays capture the confusion and separateness that America feels at the power of its entertainment industry. This book is a must for anyone who claims to be media-savvy or enjoys a concise, entertaining and intelligent autobiography. There isn't much that this book doesn't cover, but much more impressive is the advice that it manages to suggest. As Mr. Shields' observations add another dimension to your understanding of this world, you'll find yourself underlining and circling while smiling drily.

4 out of 5 stars A Useful, but not "Must have" book.......2007-06-27

-This is not a book for hack n' slash munchkins ;) If you like some background info you can slip into games regarding herbs (real and imaginary), weird alchemy and so on, it's kind of fun.
-There are useful magic items and things you can add into games, or make with Alchemy skill and so on.
-One thing it should have had, IMHO, is a table of poisons and beneficial chemicals, and that over sight prevents it being more widely useable and thus, makes it a 4 rather than 5 star item, sorry!
-My copy came with two badly printed/damage pages, Murphy's law, I should have returne dit but...meh.

So, a good item if you plan on playing a more, oh "Hosgwart" or "Cadfael" inspired game (and I don't mean that in a negative way, Cadfael is a fave of mine), or one where alchemy is an important part of the millieu.
                  :)

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-01-04

This is a very good book for every programmer to grow to next level. Book is written to address almost all issues related to software development. Need to have book for every programmer.

5 out of 5 stars Very Important Book!!.......2005-12-21

All .Net developers have to keep Patterns & Practices publications under thier radar screen because one of the best works come out of that group.

                  5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2005-08-22

To be honest, I hate two kilos books. Usually such a book contains not much information. But not this book.
It starts from design guidelines and 40-pages(!) length questionnaire, and covers in detail a lot of subjects, including CLR, interop, remoting, ASP, XML, Web Services, etc. performance. How to measure, how to test, how to tune.
If you have to know a lot of things about a lot of things concerned with .NET performance, this book is for you.

                  5 out of 5 stars simply great.......2005-03-13

A great book that covers in detail any areas you need: CLR, strings management, collections, asp.net, ado.net, xml, SQL Server and much more. A practical handbook that should be on your desktop as a reference for you everyday programming.

5 out of 5 stars Must have to any enterprise developer.......2004-07-23

In a word...WOW! There is such a wealth of info in this book. Direct for the source, one of the performance architects of the CLR (among other authors). This book is a must have for any developer who writes high use web apps or web services. The book goes into so much detail, and explains why one coding method is more efficient than another. Probably not a good beginner book, you should have a good grasp on .Net development first.
