Book Description
From the creator of the cyberpunk manga Battle Angel Alita comes a new tale of Alita's world. A thriller of crushed metal and spilled blood that takes place in the dystopian Scrapyard, it is drawn in a dark, expressionistic style that keeps it true to the spirit of cyberpunk science fiction writing.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Mystery Story.......2005-08-10
Set in the world of Battle Angel, although before the time when Ido discovers Alita, "Ashen Victor" focuses on the intense sport of Motorball.
Specifically, the story focuses on a down-and-out competitor who seems unable to avoid crashing in every race. He's crashed many times and is stuck with a low-end race team. Basically, he's in a pretty low spot. His only comfort seems to come from the friendship of a beautiful prostitute who lives nearby.
The story progresses into a fantastic mystery with a great surprise ending. Well, maybe not a surprise if you are well read in mysteries, but still excellent even if you have an idea of how it ends.
The artwork is not quite the same as in the Battle Angel books. In this story the world is created in large areas of pure black or pure white. There is very little cross hatching or shading (when compared to the B.A. books). It's a little like Frank Miller's "Sin City" although not as extreme.
I am a huge fan of Battle Angel and this book did not dissapoint me in any way. I enjoyed getting another glimpse into the Motorball world and also into The Scrapyard (when you see how a stranger interacts with a seemingly lost and crying child on the streets you will see what I mean.)
A quick read, but very enjoyable. This book stands on its own in every way. Don't miss it!
If you liked Gunnm, try this one out too........1999-12-31
I quickly fell in love with the Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita) manga, and had to pick this up as well. After reading Ashen Victor, I was by no means disappointed with it as some were; in fact, I was pleased to see the versatility of Kishiro's style. Although I do feel that the manga could have been longer, the reader still gets a good feel for the characters and the plot is well-executed. While it may not live up to the art and beauty of Gunnm, it is a good, solid story and a great addition to any Kishiro fan's collection.
A nice followup to the Alita series.......1999-08-24
Some don't like the art as much, but Kishiro is simply using a more monochromatic style in this book, and I personally feel it fits the mood of the story much better. The story, theme and characters are once again top notch, and it was nice to see Kishiro work with a smaller scale of story telling. The odd mixture of mechanical violence, technology and humanity works just as well as it did in the far more epic Alita series. This guy should really be making sci-fi films with enormous budgets. ;-)
Well. Sorry Yukito but You could have done better.......1999-03-24
Being an Alita fan, I bought this title because I loved Yukito Kishiros story line, Art, and just the overall feel you get from the future punk setting. After I read it, I was rather Disapointed. Mainly because [having Previously read all of the Alita novels] the art wasn't as good as I have seen him do. It was a real fast read and just didn't live up to his previous work. -Ravick-

TESTING.......2003-11-04
YEAH THE BOOKS GREAT. I JUST HAD TO SEE IF YOU CAN REALLY RATE NO STARS. BUT REALLY THIS BOOK DESERVES 5! VERY FUNNY. STRICTLY A PARODY; NEEDS TO BE LONGER, BUT THE ORIGINAL IS SAME LENGTH. IF YOU GOT A STICK IN THE MUD FRIEND WHO LOVES LIFE'S LIL IN STUCTION BOOK; GIVE THEM THIS FOR XMAS. IT'S ALL PART OF THE PLAN... WHO KNOWS A GOOD LAUGH REALLY IS THE BEST GIFT! DANG TEST FAILED; THIS REVIEW demands A RATING. THERE IS NO WAY TO RATE ZERO.. SO DONT EVEN TRY!!!
Appetite For Destruction Unsatisfied!.......2001-06-13
I read this book in one sitting, and I laughed out loud maybe twice. Granted, I'd just broken up with my girlfriend. However, I was hoping for something with a little more - how shall we say? - Cajones. This book is about as Destructive as writing "CRAP" on the dry-erase marker board in your office's conference room. A few years ago a college buddy of mine had a copy of a similar book with a similar title, and unlike the book under review, it was funny as hell! I've tried to find it everywhere, but it seems to be out of print. I think it had a black cover. If you want real soul-crushing, side-splitting Destruction, seek out the other book. But good luck doing that! You'll need it.
Caution: Must have sense of humor........2000-06-02
I bought this book in 1994 when it first came out. It is so hilarious! If you want some good tips on how to be obnoxious or if you really want to get on somebody's nerves, then use this book as a guide. Read all the way through, from beginning to end for maximum-laughter-effect.
So funny.......1999-03-22
This book is the bomb

Book Description
This collection of film reviews and essays focuses on the role of women in films during the 1970s and 1980s. The author, a widely published film critic, examines the shifting portrayals of women from the almost anti-progressive treatment of women in the early 1970s through the integration of more progressive professional women in the films of the late 1980s. She shows that most of the important movies of the period were about women and that these films seemed to reflect the momentous changes that women were going through in the society at large. McCreadie's in-depth analysis of women in cinema is augmented with personal interviews with leading female actresses of the period including Jane Fonda, Kathleen Turner, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Sally Field, Anjelica Huston, and others. Taking a chronological approach to her subject, McCreadie shows that the late 1970s saw some radical breakthroughs in roles for women in such movies as Annie Hall and Coming Home--perhaps reflecting the outcries earlier in the decade that women were not being treated progressively in current cinema. These more progressive and sometimes shattering images of women were in some cases even more advanced than the society the films were attempting to characterize. Throughout the early 1980s there was a sharp retreat from this position as movies like Ghostbusters and The River showed a definite backlash against feminism and gains made by women. Finally, in the late 1980s, the focus has turned toward more progressive and accomplished women in cinema although, even here, McCreadie argues, there is sometimes a conservative or reactionary hue to even the most advanced role models offered by film. Students of film, women's studies, and popular culture will find McCreadie's analysis fascinating and illuminating reading.
Book Description
Through personal essays and poetry, short fiction and painting, book reviews, interviews, performance pieces, and hybrid creations of text and image, Bridges to Cuba/Puentes a Cuba opens a window onto the meaning of nationality, transnationalism, and homeland in our time. For more than thirty-five years U.S.-Cuban relations have been couched in terms of the Cold War, often pitting Cubans in the diaspora against Cubans who remain in their homeland. Bridges to Cuba/Puentes a Cuba celebrates the informal networks that Cubans in both countries have maintained through artistic, academic, family, and other ties.
The book brings together for the first time in English Cuban voices of the second generation, both on the island and in the diaspora. The multivocal and multigenre collection includes both scholarly and creative writing and an impressive range of visual art. The participants are earnest, angry, witty, and hopeful. They are sometimes visionaries, but they are not deluded about Cuban or North American realities. Their voices offer testimony to the continuing efforts of Cubans and Cuban-Americans to look beyond the animosities and failings of their respective societies and find possibilities for personal and international reconciliation, dialogue, and renewal.
"Ruth Behar, as editor of Bridges to Cuba/Puentes a Cuba, leaps across conventional intellectual boundaries in an effort to show the complexity of nationhood, exile, and revolution in the Cuban experience of the last thirty years. An important book about the possibility and impossibility of building cultural and political bridges."--Arcadio Díaz-Quiñones, Princeton University
"Behar narrows the straits of Florida with a richly textured dialogue of voices in and out of Cuba. Bridges to Cuba is sure to make history."--Liz Balmaseda, Miami Herald
"A vital and interesting anthology about contemporary Cuba."--Oscar Hijuelos, author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love
"Bridges to Cuba is the first U.S. anthology that looks at Cuban creativity from an integrated perspective, refusing to kneel before the painful and often arbitrary divisions that have split the voices of this passionate culture into forever separate bands. The results are magnificent. Read this book and get a long overdue understanding of contemporary Cuban literature and art."--Margaret Randall, author of Women in Cuba: Twenty Years Later
"In order for memory to be recovered, there must be a community that remembers and tells the story. . . . Bridges to Cuba displays a wealth of insights that leave the reader with a sense of having experienced first hand the intricate web of thought and feeling that is Cuban life."--Latino Review of Books
"Ruth Behar's anthology represents one of the most important and moving bridges yet published on contemporary Cuba and its condition as the island that is still absent from the Western world. Bridges to Cuba is an extraordinary example of the faith and ability of Latin American intellectuals to cross true bridges, bridges of solidarity."--Marjorie Agosín, Wellesley College
Ruth Behar is author of Translated Woman: Crossing the Border with Esperanza's Story and coeditor, with Deborah Gordon, of Women Writing Culture. She has been the recipient of awards from the MacArthur and Guggenheim foundations.
Customer Reviews:
Relevant and Revealing.......2006-08-21
It has been over ten years already since this anthology was first published, but the writings, photos, art, and interviews contained within it are still as stimulating, inspiring and necessary as when Behar's beautifully edited book first came out. Despite what was hoped for in the mid-90's, relations between Cuba and the United States have worsened and it seems that the possibility for dialogue between the two countries has narrowed even further. But at least we have the dialogue that Behar has so elegantly revealed in this volume.
Bridges to Cuba presents a diversity of perspectives in an attempt to piece back together the fragments of what politics and exile have divided. An excellent interview with poet Nancy Morejon succinctly summarizes this project. Morejon says, "the miracle that we could hold a conversation. That we could confront each other. Without imposing exile as a precondition, and without us imposing the precondition of being revolutionary islanders... it was only through [Cuban] culture that we could establish those links, recognize each other" (134).
The conversations are physical, between Cubans on the island and exiled Cubans, as well as intertextual. Fundamentally, however, this book converses with the reader, challenging his or her notions of the Cuba that resides in the popular imagination. Until the embargo is lifted, this book is the closest the average American reader can get to Cuba.
Behar has given us an incredible gift.......2000-08-14
Bridges to Cuba is a collection of art, poetry, personal essays, and fiction written by Cubans on both sides of the straits of Florida.
A magnificent attempt to bring together all who are Cuban by birth, to share the complexities of what it has been like to be separated these many years. The submissions in this book capture magnificently the diversity of experiences, thoughts, emotions and conflicts caused by the separation of Cubans from each other, and for many, from the land of their birth. Having been born in Cuba and having lived in the U.S. for the last forty years, the contributions in this book spoke personally to me in a way that nothing I have ever read before has done. But the beauty of this book and the gift Behar has given, is to present the challenges and emotional depth of separation that all us feel in our lives. Each contribution gives us a different perspective, a unique view of the subject, and a deeper understanding of what it is like to be separated from that and those which we love.
Ruth, thank you.
Excellent.......1998-02-19
I had the pleasure of being a student of Ms. Behar and she is a wonderful woman. It's no surprise that her book is as informative and exciting as the class. I only wish I had asked her to sign it...

Strategy and Tactics make you a Mech Commander.......2000-10-06
This game is a worthy FASA battletech product. In the game you recieve two maps, which are identical, 48 Battlemechs which are made from 24 designs, two rule books for beginners and advanced players, dice, game Battlemechs sheets, 144 miniture insignia stickers for the battlemechs and a mail order form. I found the game very enjoyable. The beginner rules are easy to learn and you can really use strategies to disable opponents. A lot of Role Playing board games I've seen are basically just roll the dice chance games.
With this boardgame the players can really use tactics and strategies to defeat opponents. The terrain types with their advantages and disadvantages really add a sense of leadership with deciding which areas to engage enemy companies from.
The beginner rules give you the basics and are detailed enough to keep players happy until they master these rules. Next you can move onto the more advanced rules. The advanced rules make the game absolutely brilliant. There are so many variables to effect the game with strategy, it's incredible.
However the battlemechs you recieve in the game are only stand up cards. However they are beautifully drawn and colourful. I have purchased 14 miniture plastic Battlemechs to help spice the game up. Doing this can really improve the games realism.
There are a few scenarios included to help the role playing in the game. The game allows you to custom battlemechs, which gives you the ability to select weapons, armour, MPs etc. This also helps improve the game because players can create their own 'mech and test their skill against other players.
Another little set back I found was the record sheets for the Battlemechs. The idea is to use a pencil and use the sheets, then erase the pencil marks to preserve the limited sheets. However you can only do that so many times until the sheets are warn out. Scanning and printing out the sheets can save wear and tear.
The game is solid and enjoyable. It also really helps you learn about the Inner Sphere and Battletech. The game is fun and can be played with just he one set. The games can go for hours and never get boring. The strategy and tactics used in the game really make it a worthy title, where you have advanced knowledge on battletech or are a new player, the game is for everyone. I recommend this title!!

The more players you have the merrier. I have only played with a maximum of three, and it was brilliant. However making teams and having alliances also spice the game up.

A great game for people who enjoy BattleTech.......2000-08-13
This game is a fairly good representation of the BattleTech universe (and it should be; it's a FASA-endorsed prodcut). Overall, however, the boxed set will not be enough to really play the game. If you purchase this game, you will want to also obtain a copy of the BattleTech Master Rules at least; if not a few of the Technical Readouts, Sourcebooks, and so on.
However, this game is also pretty easy to learn (especially compared to many of the other wargames that I've tried). One thing to be aware of is that much of the action takes place in your head: there are (obviously) no laser-lights and so forth, but plenty of dice-rolling ;-)
This game really is good, if you enjoy BattleTech or are looking for a beginner's wargame. I started with the MechWarrior 2 game, read many of the books, and then began this game, and I was surprised how well it kept the feel of the other components of the BattleTech universe. Also, even if you don't play the game, the sourcebooks are a wonderful way to learn about your favorite factions.
This game, ultimately, lives up to the BattleTech name and does it justice. A final note: if you play this after starting MechWarrior 3 (or vice versa) you will notice similarities, since the 'Mech 3 game was based upon the pen-and-paper BattleTech game. Playing this game helped me understand the 'Mech creation system in 'Mech 3 far better than I had beforehand.
Mostly, an enjoyable game for just about anyone.
Excellent Game System.......1999-11-28
I began playing Battletech when the 2nd edition rules were the newest around, and have stayed with it ever since. It is a well thought out, easy to learn game system that is still entertaining due to the infinite setups that are possible. The newest boxed set fixes the one problem I had with the earlier boxed set, the cardboard figures,as the current set comes with plastic miniatures. Metal ones can be purchased for almost every FASA designed 'mech through gaming stores. I have played dozens of different wargame systems, and always come back to Battletech.
-Greg Morris-
It's not just a game its a whole new universe........1999-09-11
This is one seriously cool game with an easy to learn but difficult to master universe. The best part is it can be used so many differant ways. 1. Get a friend and have a scrap with 7 or 8(!)mechs each. 2. Get a load of friends and have a one mech each rumble. 3. Play with a story.
There are just thousand of ways to use this system. And the battletech system goes on with the card game as well.
One kick system.

Not Too Shabby.......2000-05-15
I have been a Battletech fan since I bought MechWarrior 2 and have never stopped enjoying the different aspects of the Battletech universe. The RPG brings a new dimension to this series and this box set is and item no Battletech fan should be without. Even if you don't like the RPG the minatures are really cool. I hope you have fun with this set.

Code Samples didn't work.......2007-08-30
Usually the "for Dummies" books are well, written, humorous and informative. This one, however, needed to go back for some serious editing.
The writing style was stilted and hard to follow, not to mention there were plenty of errors.
But I could overlook that if the content was valuable. Unfortunately, there were many problems with the content in this book.
First, the example code did not match the screen shots. Mostly it was some trivial wording changes, but things like that lower the reader's confidence in the veracity of the book.
Second, the way Holzer steps you through the code is both confusing and a waste of space. He shows a code snippet - but just the lines he's describing. Then the next snippet is the first snippet plus a few more lines (in bold), and on and on, so that you almost never see the entire code file in one piece, and in some cases he doesn't show the entire contents of the file at all.
That wouldn't be so bad, because of course you can download all the examples from the website. The problem is, about half of them don't work, and being an Ajax Dummy, I don't know how to debug them. I tried them in Firefox and Safari, and got the same results in both.
The author and publisher need to go back through this book and revalidate everything, and rewrite the code samples so they're more like every other programming book out there.
Ajax For Dummies.......2007-05-06
The material is great and gave me all I needed to very succesfully utilize Ajax as an add-on in a production application.
An well-rounded guide for beginners.......2006-08-29
This book is for people who know OF Ajax, but want to know more ABOUT Ajax. It walks through the layering of the different technologies that make Ajax what is, and in a very organized, logical, and effective way. The style and humor of the series is present as always, and there are lots of great examples and exercises included.
After completing the book and working on various projects, it becomes less useful and you'll probably want to switch to a more reference-oriented book. For beginners though, this book cannot be beat.
Holzner is one of the best tech writers.......2006-06-27
I admit to being a fan of Steve Holzner. The man is an excellent technical writer with a knack for communicating the most complex concepts in simple, concise language.
I had (and still have) no particular interest in Ajax, but because I try to stay conversant with all platforms, I felt that if anyone could explain Ajax quickly, it would be Holzner.
I am not disappointed.
I don't think this book, despite its being a "dummies" title, will do a neophyte much good. If you aren't at least minimally familiar with HTML, Javascript, XML, PHP, CGIt CSS and some other technologies, you'll get lost really fast.
On the other hand, for people who already possess at least some basic knowledge of these technologies, Holzner's book will quickl provide the conceptual framework you need for understanding Ajax.

This book is SUPPOSED to be for dummies, not experts........2006-06-06
Having never touched any Javascript, XML, PHP, or Ajax, I assumed by the title of the book and the description on the back cover that this would let a complete beginner know everything that is needed to be known about these subjects.
It started out fine, but as the code got more complex, more and more typos started showing up in the code. This was not impossible to remedy, thankfully, since all the code is available as a download on their website. The real problem, however, was digging through each line of code, comparing it to the copy I downloaded from their site, trying to figure out whether the error was my fault or the book's.
Another nagging problem is that after the first couple chapters, the book stops giving you the complete code for each application, expecting you to already know what Javascript needs to be where after reading 100 pages of a "Dummies" book. Even worse, many times it only tells you WHERE to write said code, not WHY you write it; several lines are not explained at all, which makes remembering what goes where that much more difficult.
By the time I got to Chapter 4, the typos, assumptions, errors, and several other problems forced me to give up on the book, return it to the store, and resort to simply reading more in-depth tutorials online for free.
Sure, I could just copy the code straight from their download files and be done with it, but why bother copy/pasting something this complex without really understanding it, and paying thirty dollars to do so?
I'm giving it two stars because the first couple chapters really did help me to get a vague understanding of how all this works, as well as some rudimentary Javascript. After that, it's too infuriating to bother with as a complete beginner, which is who the book is SUPPOSED to be for.
