Book Description

'Your job is as much a cultural ambassador as an educator.' With these words ringing in his ears, Richard starts his job as a JET (a participant in the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program) with high hopes of carrying out this dual role. Enthusiastically he embraces life in Japan, absorbs Japanese culture, learning the arts of the tea ceremony and the shamisen, makes Japanese friends - an ex-kamikaze pilot, a purple-haired tea master, mafia 'thugs', to name but a few - and immerses himself in Japanese philosophy. Young and idealistic, he sees a need for improvement in teaching of English, but when he tries to introduce changes he hits a brick wall. The teachers just aren't interested in new ideas. Reluctantly he realises that, to survive, he will have to stop rocking the boat and learn to accept the 'Japanese way' of doing things... This does not stop him asking questions though, and when it comes to the problem of bullying in schools, he refuses to let the matter rest. When his concerns are ignored - with tragic results - he blames himself. Should he have tackled it the 'American way' instead of the 'Japanese way'? Richard's experiences as a JET are fascinating, his evaluation of Japanese philosophy, culture and the education system sharp and incisive, and through the eyes of a 'young foreigner', an exciting picture of life in modern Japan emerges.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully descriptive, thrilling and moving. A must read........2004-10-10

This book is in my view a must read for anyone interested in Japan, living and teaching in Japan, modern Japanese society and the remnants of its past which still permeate through to modern society. As a Japanese married to a foreigner living and working in Osaka, I am amazed at how well this book captures some of the more intricate facets of Japanese society. I do agree with the prior reviewer that Kramer can be a bit indulgent in his writing, but one must look at the events described as more than a mere struggle of East vs. West. What Kramer describes is no less than the brutal murder of one of his students by another student while those around him did little to aid. He presents the opposing viewpoints to his own thoughts and theories in the form of discussions with friends and colleagues. He disagrees, strongly at times with the conclusions that they reach, but he does present their viewpoints, fairly and one hopes accurately. One must also remember that in the end he did bow (no pun intended) to the will of majority and the result was that his student was murdered! To call this book "culturally embarassing" is to do it a grave injustice. To call Kramer culturally ignorant and unappreciative of the opportunties afforded him is completely baseless. In the two years of time the book spans the author passionately devoted himself to learning Japanese and traditional arts such as shamisen and tea ceremony. In end the end the discussions and arguments he had with admnistration officials were in Japanese.

The controvery created by this book is in my view one that is currently central to a struggle raging in Western philosophy and thought. Where is the acceptable line between being able to criticize and make better and being culturally insensitive and imperialistic? It is and always will be a fact and circumstance specific analysis, but Kramer in this book is in my view very safely on the correct side of the line in his analysis and conclusions. Personally, I wished he had been more aggressive in his approach as the end result may have been very different - as unfair as it may be to speculate on that score.

Finally, I have noticed over the years that foreigners interested in Japan are largely of two types. There is the "Japanophile" - who loves all things Japanese, is extremely defensive of anyone who levels the slightest criticism against Japan, is extremely proud of being able to speak more than a few words of Japanese and fashions himself/herself a "hen na gaijin" or Japan expert. On the other hand there are those who despite outward appearances to the contrary, deep down despise Japan as backwards, and no attempts to understand it or embrace it. They use it for what they can e.g. money, physical pleasures, etc. Neither is a healthy view. To throw away what you have, the cultural perspective you are coming from in the mad and arrogant hope that you will find the meaning of another is pure folly. Kramer, in my view has the rare talent to take his knowledge and experience and apply it with understanding and decency in the attempt to understand and improve. Unfortunatley, both categories 1 and 2 gaijin in Japan may not like this book as each will compare it to his/her own experiences with distaste, but it remains an honest testament and a must read for anyone interested in modern and ancient Japan.

3 out of 5 stars Culturally embarrassing & arrogant. Past that? Good JET book.......2004-09-12

Arrogant, self-righteous, hot-headed and argumentative, are but a few of the traits exhibited by the author in his compare-and-contrast account of his experiences as a 2 year JET program participant. Kramer's accomplishment, though admirable, is colored by his culturally-uneducated interpretations of the differences between the American and Japanese society, educational systems, culture, and behavior.

When facing challenges, Kramer's solutions often point out shortcomings, or apparent inferiority of not only the education system, and its bureaucracy, but social behavior of the Japanese themselves. While discounting interpretations, and advice of his fellow JETs with rural, and international education backgrounds, Kramer offers his perspectives through the biased lens of the apparent cosmopolitan, and inter-cultural upbringing afforded him by his New York City education.

I strongly disagree with the conclusions of other reviewers that this book should be considered excellent literature, and that it is in any way objective. Kramer, though promising, will need to remove himself from his books, in order to gain them the credibility they need, and, yes, deserve, for a wider, let alone an international audience.

As a JET cultural ambassador about to set off on his own adventure, I am embarrassed to be representing America in the footsteps of the attitudes expressed in this book. This book clearly illiterates the litany of reasons why Americans are seen as culturally-shallow, arrogant and imperialistic within the international community.

Kramer's lack of objectivity in his experiences leave his writings vacant of the richness of cultural dynamics built over millennia of tradition in Japan, yielding a uniquely Japanese way of approaching conflict, and problems inherent in all aspects of a society. Kramer's book brutally robs Japan of its unique culture, in an Americanized attempt to analyze, and attribute the causes of the many preventable bullying incidents present in all schools, which resulted in the tragic murder of one of his students.

If you are expecting great literature, or a deeper anthropological understanding of Japan's educational system, and its people, this book is not for you. If you are a JET seeking a glimpse of the kind of adventures awaiting you, this book indeed details a vivid account of the day-to-day life of a JET in Minamimatsuyama, Saitama prefecture. Kramer's unfortunately negative experiences, and biased opinions seem to overwhelm the numerous positive stories in his book. Do not let Kramer's overall negativity discourage you.

If you read past Kramer's arrogance, his book is full of fascinating, and beautifully visualized anecdotes, which bring you vividly in contact with several individuals, which afforded the author a priceless glance at the magical world of language, tea ceremony, and musical tradition. It is in these authentic experiences and conversations with Japan's per-war generation that Kramer's masterfully remembered conversations, and vivid literary style really shine through.

It is in moments where Kramer loses his basis for comparison does this book become a fascinating account of west meets east.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for prospective JET participant.......2004-04-11

The description of this book does not do it justice. I read this on the advice of a friend not knowing what to expect (I am joining the JET program this year and I am a career 10+ teacher). What Kramer describes is a clear, objective picture of what to expect in terms of both living and teaching English in a junior high school in Japan. It is also hillariously amusing, with a great mix of anecdotes coupled with historic fact.

And that is only half of the book. The second half deals with the problem of bullying. As the reader is informed and spellbound by on the very first page, one of Kramer's students murdered another in the classroom. He describes the reactions of the BD. Bd. of ED., other teachers, parents, and most of all himself through the events leading up to the tragedy and its aftermath. What I found most interesting was both how it reminded me of events of my own career in the US and also how with all things there often is no right answer. It is the process, the struggle that gives merit to the experience. This book guides, its teaches, it shows a picture of what to expect as a teacher not only in Japan but anywhere because at the end of the day, people are people.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Outstanding, a Pleasure to Read.......2003-03-01

Richard Kramer has written one of the most moving and beautiful narrations about the cultural dichotomy between post-WW II Japan and a post-Cold War American trying to bring comfort and love to a hard and unforgiving culture.

I have read few books in my life that have moved me as much as "When the Butterfly Sings". Kramer has truly written a masterpiece - and I look forward to the broad distribution of this piece on a national/international level.

Kramer is most definitely a superstar in the making. It is exciting to see a work of art like "When the Butterfly Sings" in anticipation of what is to come from this future literary genius.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read for all!.......2003-01-23

I ordered this book 1 month ago and have already read it 2 times. Both intriguing and informative, "When the Butterfly Stings" paints an intimate portrait of Japanese culture and politics. Richard Kramer is undoubtedly a rising star in a long list of great authors. I can't wait for his next work! I strongly urge anyone with the desire to expand thier mind and enlighten thier soul to read this book. Bravo!

Book Description

Martha Brockenbrough's It Could Happen to You is a delightfully funny diary of the author's own pregnancy through the first year of her daughter's life. It is the perfect antidote to all of the patronizing, horribly dull pregnancy books, which are long on advice and short on laughs. It Could Happen to You began as a column Brockenbrough wrote for the Microsoft Network while she was pregnant. During its tenure on MSN, it was the most widely read column about pregnancy and motherhood on the Internet. It's easy to see why. Brockenbrough's amusing approach to pregnancy and motherhood will strike a chord with experienced moms and the newly pregnant alike, who may wonder, as the author did, "Do I really have to wear maternity clothes'"Throughout the book, Brockenbrough shares her joys and her fears, and asks the questions every new mom wants to know, such as, "Why do old ladies keep telling me my baby is cold'" and shares the realization that "When you're a mother, your guilt light goes off the second you start doing something for you, instead of something for your child." A few not-to-be-missed chapters written by her husband, Adam, such as "A Guy's Guide to Baby Holding," provide a comical male perspective on the whole experience.Refreshingly honest and funny, It Could Happen to You is just right for bolstering the most important tool a new parent has-a sense of humor.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-17

I bought this book looking for something truly "different" than the typical pregnancy books on the market - and perhaps to maybe reveal a little more than my friends' censored trips down memory lane. Although I found the diary-like style of this memoir to make for an easy read, I have to admit that I was getting rather annoyed and impatient with the author. As another reviewer stated, my life does not compare with the author's seemingly perfect life. In fact, I enjoyed the sections her husband contributed much more than the rest of the book! Honestly, I ended up skimming through the last portion of the book because I simply had enough of Brockenbrough's whinning and obsession with matching blankets with clothes. I mean...really?!@#! Maybe if I have a little girl my feelings might be different - for now I'm hoping that Jane Symons' "How to have a baby and still live in the real world", is a better read. I would pass on adding this one to your collection - consider getting it from the library!

A humorous and easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for the New Mother.......2006-11-03

My sister had just had her first baby and was feeling overwhelmed. After reading some reviews, I purchased this book for her. My sister said she read the book while baby was sleeping in her arms, but was laughing so hard at times she'd have to put the book down to keep from awakening or frightening the baby. My sister was very thankful for the comic relief and has since looked at her overwhelming moments with humor. Definitely a great gift.

5 out of 5 stars She's Right - It Could Happen to You.......2006-09-08

This is an honest, funny, and sweet memoir of pregnancy and the first year as a parent. Brockenbrough takes us along on her journey as she lives the ups and downs of life as a new parent. It's sometimes funny, sometimes endearing, but always entertaining. Brockenbrough is not as outrageous as Jenny McCarthy, which is a good thing, because her book will appeal to everyone. It could be you in this book, for all intents and purposes, and reading someone else's first experience with parenthood is sure to arm a new mom with insights and hope.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely without humor or insight and not well written.......2006-02-06

This book is NOT funny. It just isn't. Using the word "barf" a million times in a nonpun- not amusing. In fact the only time I laughed during the book was from a Rita Rudner quote. Rita Rudner- funny. The writing style is overly chatty dear diary. Annoying. I'm not interested in her dull life, only her pregnancy. I could get more insight talking to a random pregnant woman. It isn't even sweetly funny. I would love a good pregnancy book, I'm sick of the medical guides. But this isn't it. I welcome recommendations. PAss on this one. I fell asleep to it.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2005-11-09

Golf Happens is one of two books I have read written by Rick. This book is hysterical! I am not much of a reader but when I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. I have read the book twice and each time I have found something useful, from driving to putting to long irons to wedges. If you want to take a few strokes off the card, I highly suggest you read this book.
A very well written book!

I really enjoyed this book. I am a new golfer and I found this book very informative. It provides the reader the history of the game. It also provides information and ideas to help your game. It has drills and techniques the reader can use to better their individual enjoyment and skill of the game. Much of the ideas are presented in a humorous way which helps in the readers retention. The author also shares some individual stories about when he was a golf club pro which are very entertaining as well as informative. I highly recommend this book. It is quick and worthwhile read!

Don't be fooled by the title! In Rick Graves book "Golf Happens", golf doesn't just happen, it comes alive with antedotes, insight and instruction. While I found the author's insights on the trials and tribulations of running a private golf club facinating reading, I was equally impressed by the golf instruction. Since reading Rick Graves' book I dropped my handicap from a 14 to a 9 following a couple of his tips. This alone makes it a great buy. I'd like to see him do a guest spot on the Golf Channel. It would be a great show. Get the book. It's worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2000-02-16

I'm Rick's son, and I just wanted to make a few comments about Golf Happens. The book is a very witty look at my father's life as a pro golfer. The book even offers a few cutting-edge tips on lowering your score. Rick has worked for Nicklaus, taught at PGA academies, and played on the Asian tour. The man is a walking Golf Encyclopedia. So, if you want a few laughs and enjoy humorous tales of golf antics, get this book!

        Book Description

When you watch professional golfers on television, sometimes it's hard to believe that they're playing the same game as the rest of us. The drives are long, the approach shots hit the green, and the putts break the way they're supposed to. You'd think they'd never heard the word shank in their lives.
But occasionally even golfing's elite can descend to the level of the everyday hacker. When Bad Things Happen to Good Golfers recounts those rare moments when the game's greatest showed their human side. Here you'll read about such gut-wrenching moments as Arnold Palmer's famed "dirty dozen" at the Los Angles Open in 1961, Greg Norman's collapse at the 1996 Masters, and Tiger Woods's whiff and other misadventures in the thick gorse of Royal Troon at the 1997 British Open.
Sam Snead, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, and Ernie Els are among the other golf luminaries whose moments of infamy are found in When Bad Things Happen to Good Golfers-a book that lends credence to the duffer's old adage, "It happens to the best of them."

          Book Description

Film has taught us to see the world afresh, but it could not picture its own birth. In The Dream That Kicks, Michael Chanan puts forward a theory of invention to show how cinematography was a product of the growing forces of nineteenth century capitalist production and traces the development of British cinema from its mystical origins in music halls to its emergence as a cultural commodity.

The Dream That Kicks combines astute textual analysis of individual films with detailed archival work of the industry. It situates cinema within its wider context to produce a thought-provoking exploration of its cultural and ideological implications. This paperback edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account orhte recent work on early cinema.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Very Dangerous Dream Indeed.......2000-10-04

"The Dream that Kicks" by Michael Chanan is a classic book of the development (the so-called invention) of cinema. When the book first came out in 1980 it marked a turning point in the study of 19th century moving image. Now, updated for its 1996 edition, it remains as significant as when it came out originally; a very important and pertinent document.

This book was possibly the first that combined a number of perspectives to account for the developments that led to "cinema". As such it still remains one of a small number. Chanan presents the process of invention as resulting from the interplay of a number of factors ranging from discoveries in optics and the theory of perception to the expansion of the capitalist mode of production and the social forces it unleashed. In the course of the book he has a lot to say about all these aspects and their relationship to "cinema". A lot of research has gone in the writing of this book but it manages to avoid the dangers of being dry, boring or difficult. On the contrary it is readable, full of surprises and insight, and transmits to the reader the joy of discovering a history mostly forgotten and ignored.

Chanan discusses a lot of commonly held beliefs that are based on misconceptions. One such point is the explanation of the perception of moving images. Cinema is still very often explained by the phenomenon of persistence of vision. In one of the best chapters, Chanan outlines the development of the theory of perception since the beginning of the 19th century, which has established that persistence of vision plays only a relatively minor role, while the principal reason is the phenomenon of apparent movement, known also as phenomenon-phi. Another major aspect he deals with is the process of the invention of cinema. Chanan shows that cinema was developed by the combined efforts of hundreds of individuals, each one making a more or less significant contribution. The final conclusion of this issue is that the efforts to assign to one particular individual the title of inventor of the cinema are misguided, irrelevant and suspect. Other chapters include issues like patent conflicts; the structure of the music hall and theatre businesses in the 19th century; the invention and development of photography and celluloid. Another positive aspect of the book is its international character. Despite its subtitle ("The prehistory and early years of cinema in Britain") and the associated emphasis on the history in that country it doesn't cover only the developments there. Of course the emphasis is on Britain but, rightly, it covers developments anywhere in the world, as the early history of cinema was an international effort.

On the negative side is the emphasis Chanan puts on certain of his research findings. Even if they are interesting, they did not had to be listed exhaustively in the main body of the book. For example Chanan was able to trace the notes Friese-Greene (a British film pioneer) carried with him when he died, during a film industry meeting. The notes are of interest and fascinating but they do not really fit in his narrative. They would be excellent as an appendix or an extended footnote; even as subject of a separate article but not where they are included. Another negative aspect is the absence of illustrations. This aspect is important, as several of the devices and processes described can only be understood if demonstrated with drawings and photographs. However, these minuses are few and do not reduce the importance of this major book.

In this gripping adventure, the dark elves finally delve beyond the depths of their own dark realms of the Underdark, and break through into the lush jungles of the Hollow World! What follows is a grim tale of flashing blades, poison and sunlight... the PCs (levels 7-9) must journey through thousands of miles of lost wilderness, in search of the feathered serpents - the only race ancient enough that their elders might know how to stop the menace! A great adventure for any Underdark campaign.

              4 out of 5 stars Premiere Rocks.......2006-07-11

I have no basis for comparison as I got this software to make a wedding slideshow. I've done my research and read reviews that this is more difficult to learn than other programs.

I've only used a very old version of ULead before, but I must say, this program was able to do whatever I wanted it to do, Ken Burns effects, rotations, pans, zooms, etc. Granted I was forced to learn quickly, after I discovered the concept of keyframes, it was just a matter of manually doing everything the way I wanted it done.

I highly recommend this program for beginners because it provides many of the special effects, transitions, etc. for video production. Once done, you can either author a DVD or export movies into many formats including MPEG-2, AVI, WMP, and autoplay DVDs.

Although it's an Elements version, it packs many powerful features. I haven't had time to read the manuals. But I guess if I did, I would find out more functionality and shortcuts. Good luck deciding!

2 out of 5 stars making DVD slide shows with photoshop elements 4 & premiere 2.......2006-03-18

After numerous hours attemting to make DVD slide shows with Photoshop elemnts 4.0 and Premiere 2.0, I have given up for now.It appears that my Windows Xp media center has a problem preventing this particular use of the application to work.
Adobe support was unable to solve the problem without a complete reinstall of Windows.
Otherwise I like Photoshop elements 4.0

5 out of 5 stars A Big Help to Get Started.......2006-02-20

I have had some experience with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, but none in Premiere. Photoshop has several new features I had not used previously. The book was great at getting me started on a new project to put together a DVD of our church's high schools grads and their family pictures, along with audio. The book includes a disk containing all the lesson materials, showing how the final product should look prior to walking you through on how to get to that final product. It does not cover all of the features of each program, but is great at getting you started and familiarizing yourself with the program interfaces.

A very easy read and a step by step tutorial. I ordered the book before buying the software assuming the degree of difficulty was high... if I had to do it over again I probably would have waited because the manual is pretty thorough.

I use the classroom book as a reference whenever I get stuck...
