1 out of 5 stars cynical and stupid.......2003-08-16

I too was a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, albeit several years after Moran. This book was passed around amongst volunteers and we all quickly grew sick of his attitude towards his duty and his villagers. I think it gives a bad impression of Morocco, Peace Corps, and the people who have dedicated a portion of their lives to integrating themselves into a different culture. Moran hung out with Westerners, imported his Western girlfriend into his experience, and it seems his only interactions with Moroccans were as his servants or students. One incident really got on my nerves--when his supervisor had a "discussion" with him over what he suspected was a drop of red wine spilled on his shirt. True, on that occasion it happened to be tomato sauce, but his indignance was rather misplaced since he admitted in other parts of the book to going to work drunk and drinking wine on his lunch breaks.

PLEASE do not read this and think this is what Morocco and Peace Corps are really like.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and captivating.......2001-05-01

Michael Moran writes an interesting book about his two years in the Peace Corps in Morocco. Although this book doesn't actually tell you much about the Peace Corps itself (something that Moran actually doesn't seem too interested in, despite his two year commitment to the program), it does show you one way a Peace Corps experience can go -- which is to say, he pretty much turned the two years of "service" into an opportunity for him to travel and have some experiences worth turning into a book later on. What makes this book worth reading is that Moran writes well and does not try to spare himself. He presents himself as a real person who is, at alternating times, naive, determined, pretentious, sympathetic, arrogant, or young. But throughout it all, he is intelligent and honest as he portrays his struggles with Moroccan culture and with his own life, a self-consciousness ultimately represented through his relationship with a Scottish woman, Janet Graves.

A note: Don't bother to read the synopsis on the back of this book -- it isn't an accurate portrayal of the main themes or struggles of the book.

I do believe that other Peace Corps writers (such as Thomsen in "Living Poor") allow their experiences to change and influence them. As Moran says in his introduction (excerpted above in the Editorial Reviews), he doesn't think that the PC really changes people, but rather dramatizes their flaws. I believe this viewpoint of his is a result of the mentality he had going into the experience-- he seemed to have been dissatisfied and somewhat lonely in his American life, and was seeking an escape in a somewhat strict and self-righteous way that didn't allow for him to be changed by the culture around him. Ultimately, I'm sure he did change, as we are all changed by our experiences, but don't expect this book to be a telling of how those changes occur. It's simply an interesting read about two years in an expatriate's life, but its honesty and the adventures contained within it will be captivating nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Impressions of "Younger Than That Now".......2001-02-01

I happened to come across this book in Austin, TX. The cover art was interesting and well done, very colorful, and it caught my eye. This guy has quite a tale about being in the Peace Corps in Morocco, among other things. There is a fascinating account of a meeting Mr. Moran had with Paul Bowles. He writes of personal experiences that were sincerely entertaining, and the man knows how to write. There is a sense of surrealism of this period of time, from 1981-1984 or so, that mirrors a similar mood of the early Reagan years. For a testament of the changing world around that time period, "Younger Than That Now" captures it as well as can be done. This book deserves to be read. It's just a great, all-around piece of writing.

5 out of 5 stars Synopsis of Younger Than That Now.......1998-09-06

"Pure kif,"the legendary expatriate musician and writer Paul Bowles told me,"is the best thing in the world for a troubled mind." Younger Than That Now chronicles Michael Moran's hallucinatory trip through the labyrinths of Boujad,Morocco, where the Peace Corps volunteer lived and taught from 1981 to 1983. Part lyric, part fact, this book lays bare the inside workings of the Peace Corps and shows how each volunteer,no matter how estranged, struggles to make a difference.Through all the talk, repentance, and endless travel, one thing remains constant:Moran's experience is never PC.

      Book Description

One of the most powerful players of his generation, Ian Woosnam is a golfing legend. His is a fascinating life story - from the struggle to earn a living in a hard-working mining community, through the highs and lows of the amateur and professional game, to becoming a household name. Woosnam has strong opinions on how to keep the game "honest" and the threat posed by modern technology and the regulation of the professional game. And on a lighter note, he revisits the wealth of characters he has come across both inside and outside the game: from Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo to Ian Botham and Dennis Taylor.

          Book Description

Utz-Peter Reich addresses economists interested in a sound empirical foundation for their theoretical concepts. He investigates economic value and determines how value is defined in theory, which is microeconomic, and how it is measured in practice in national accounts. He demonstrates that microeconomic theory is not made to guide or interpret national accounts figures and he offers an alternative theory.

            Book Description

"This book is an exploration. By means of words, signs, drawings. Mescaline, the subject explored." In Miserable Miracle, the great French poet and artist Henri Michaux, a confirmed teetotaler, tells of his life-transforming first encounters with a powerful hallucinogenic drug. At once lacerating and weirdly funny, challenging and Chaplinesque, his book is a breathtaking vision of interior space and a piece of stunning writing wrested from the grip of the unspeakable.

Includes forty pages of black-and-white drawings.

5 out of 5 stars Me Show Michaux........2000-10-11

Henri Michaux wrote a lot about his drug experiences, and in particular with his horrendously painful experiences with the grand-daddy of all psychotropic drugs: mescaline. I've never done mescaline so I can't compare notes with Michaux's observations, but nonetheless reading this account was a sheer joy. Michaux's scintillating prose gives the reader an unembellished yet thoroughly poetic account of the mind of a man who has experienced the supposed rapturous delight/horror provided by mescaline intoxication. The visions and hallucinations which Michaux amiably recounts will tickle even the most jaded drug enthusiast. The text published by City Lights in S.F. includes drawings executed by Michaux during his most feverish bouts with the drug. Recommended for those of you obsessed with the effects of hallucinogenic drugs on the literary imagination and artistic creation.

5 out of 5 stars Good Fun For Younger Readers.......2007-01-10

"Quicksolve Whodunit Puzzles: Challenging Mini-Mysteries" contains a series of mini-mysteries for readers to solve. The puzzles are very short, just one or two pages long and the answers are at the back of the book. There's a nice sense of humor throughout the book, mostly through the use of punny names starting with Professor Quicksolve and continuing with Officer Kautchya, Sergeant Shurshot, and Officer Longshot. While the names are fun, author Jim Sukach gets a bit carried away and names like Carl Crook, Lulu Lyuer, and Miss Pettithief are dead giveaways to adult readers. Although the book does not specify what age group it is written for, the book is clearly meant for younger readers, as most of the puzzles are too easy for adult readers. However, the mysteries should be just challenging enough for younger readers. Most of the mysteries have logical solutions, but a few ("Tracking Terrorists", "Dog Meet" and "Dit Dah Dilemma") are a bit of a stretch and probably shouldn't have been included.

"Quicksolve Whodunit Puzzles: Challenging Mini-Mysteries" is a good book to introduce young readers to the fun of solving mini mysteries.

I have been using various versions of Photoshop for over 6 years and have bought many Photoshop how-to books for most of the versions. I hadn't gotten around to getting a book for Photoshop CS until now. What I was looking for was a very detailed book getting into the changes made for version CS and especially getting into the details of the automated and batch functions.

Unfortunately this book barely touched on the specific new areas of Photoshop that I wanted to learn about, despite having over 1000 pages! I also noticed that there are only about 16 actual color pages in the whole book. For those just learning how to use Photoshop, this lack of color examples could be a real drawback.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, insightful and informative.......2005-01-12

This is a great Photoshop CS book. As the other reviewer states, its not for the first time Photoshop user, but if you can handle the basics and you want to learn more, this is the book to get. I've had Photoshop for about a year, playing with it and trying to figure things out for myself, but after reading just 15 pages of this book, I learnt so many more tips and tricks - even for the basic tools! The full colour is really nice to read, and the author guides you through Photoshop in a friendly and helpful, and thankfully not arogant way.

I really recommend this book for the Photoshop user keen to learn more.

5 out of 5 stars Great coverage of Camera Raw and other advanced features.......2004-09-14

Not for newbies, but if you're serious about your Photoshop or use it in your career, this is the book to get. The thorough coverage of Camera Raw alone makes it worth the purchase price. You'll find high-end coverage here you can't find anywhere else.

                  3 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a disappointment.......2006-11-29

Honestly, I was somewhat disappointed with McClelland's Photoshop CS Bible. In the Preface he mentions another version titled "Photoshop CS Bible, Professional Edition" which I don't think really exists. If it did maybe I would have been less disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars It is realy a Bible.......2006-08-01

This book is really a bible covering everything about Photoshop CS. All what you need to know. I have two issues about this book: it is not tailored to a certain provision such as graphics designers, photographers and so on. The second is the lack of proper classifications, for example: file formatting is explained in full details, but not mentioned in the Table of Contents. Nevertheless it is a great book for those consider themselves serious Photoshop users. Looking forward to see CS2 version of the book.

                  5 out of 5 stars anathema!.......2005-11-05

Who are we, mere mortals, to make easy criticism with the great achievement of the Master himself?

THE Bible is THE bible of photoshop, and lives up to its name, after setting the standard for photoshop related literature. It's the king of books of the king of programs, version after version, book after book.

It does have its flaws, sure, as Michael Jordan had his, as MichaelAngelo's David may have them, after centuries of being under the magnifying glass of the most avid experts.

It is OK to search new horizons, such as Scott Kelby's work, practical, step-by-step structured for we beginners and amateurs. But THE BIBLE is the book of photoshop to have at home if you could only have one, the industry benchmark for years, one of that books about something that achieve a place by themselfs and go way beyond the category of tutorials.

In my opinion, a book maybe not to be bought with every change of photoshop, but maybe every two upgrades or the program or so. A writing style and approach to teaching which has produced the best material (if the books are good, try the dvds series etc)about photoshop and illustrator.

Do not dare to say the name of the Great Deke in vain!!!!!!

                  5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-10-24

As interested in digital photography and art, I decided to buy this book after after a couple of excellent books from Scott Kelby. This is the kind of book that goes beyond the instructions on how to create/correct a digital image following predefined, but obscure, steps. This book is for those wanting to understand what's really behind the photoshop software with the objective to become a knowledgeable user of the product with new horizons of creativity. Very happy of the buy.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive reference would benefit from work-along examples; one CD is worth a thousand pages!.......2005-07-03

Wonderful exhaustive reference to Photoshop techniques, suffering only from lack of decent images to follow what the author is trying to tell you. The grayscale images on recycled paper convey far too little information for the amount of text covered. The color plates help some, but trying to locate them, in two far-apart locations yet, makes any connection between text and outcome all that more tedious.

Frankly, notwithstanding the disingenuous reasoning of why NOT to provide quality color images (whether on CD or online), it would have been cheaper in the end to include a CD with the book and dispense with the color plates altogether. The lack of see-for-yourself images is particularly troublesome in the promising section on layer blending modes. Deke keeps on talking and talking, but after a while you give up with a bad headache because even the original layer arrangement isn't all that clear. Too bad, really - this would have been one of the most outstanding parts of the book.

The Bible becomes even more confusing when you learn that there's a professional version with exactly the same title (librarians just love that!) -- sort of like an Old and a New Testament. Unfortunately, now that I own both versions, there are indeed some differences (mostly omissions) between the two. Even so, there are huge sections that are almost verbatim repetitions of the Old Testament, other than for the high-quality paper and the on-page color images (yet even here the section on layer blends remains unfulfilling for lack of a CD to learn how the author got there). Worse, the tantalizing in-depth treatment of Adobe's Camera RAW plugin doesn't show up till near the end and, truthfully, isn't that greatly changed from the original (even the tea kettle illustration remains unchanged, other than for the color).

In all truth, McClellands "All-in-One" text that includes a CD and video strips may be not as complete as the Bibles, but you'll learn a lot more, and retain it much better.

All told: the Bible(s) remains the definitive Photoshop reference work, presented in readable style with a nice touch of gentle humor. As it stands, this is a great resource for intermediate to advanced users, and a great buy pound-for-pound, well worth the top five stars. Substituting a CD for the color plates would turn this already bright star into one heck of a super-Nova.
