Book Description

"Zig Ziglar epitomizes determination, perseverance, excellence, and a loving Christian spirit more than anyone I know! The world would be a better place if more of us were just like him."
--Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., The Cooper Clinic, Dallas, Texas

Zig Ziglar, the motivational speaker who has galvanized audiences around the world and written more than a dozen perennially popular books, brings that same unbounded energy and clarity of vision to this candid, inspiring account of his own life and the forces that shaped it.

Every year, Zig Ziglar travels all over the world delivering a resounding message of hope and commitment in forums ranging from high-powered business conferences and church leadership assemblies to youth conventions and educational gatherings. In Zig, Ziglar chronicles another kind of journey: his own transformation from a struggling, not terribly successful salesman to the sales champion of several different companies, and finally to his current position as one of the world's best-known and most highly regarded motivational speakers and trainers. As he describes his experiences, he brings to life the essence of his teachings: “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

At the heart of Ziglar's story are the people who taught him the importance of balancing a commitment to hard work with compassion for others. His first teacher was his mother, who raised him alone after the early death of his father, and introduced him to the principles and values he has honored for the rest of his life. Her lessons were reinforced by many others–from the men and women who became his business mentors to the friends and spiritual leaders who comforted and supported him when things got tough. Paying tribute to each of them, Ziglar zeroes in on the philosophy and traits that have enabled him to achieve success in business and in his personal life: discipline, hard work, common sense, integrity, commitment, and an infectious sense of humor.

Ziglar's speaking engagements and seminars along with a wide array of audio and video materials, books, and training manuals, have helped to trigger positive changes in small businesses, Fortune 500 companies, U.S. government agencies, nonprofit associations, religious organizations, schools, and prisons. At once engaging and enlightening, Zig provides a riveting portrait of the man who has achieved so much by embracing the simple but profound goal of helping others.

4 out of 5 stars Zig...a motivational man.......2006-12-11

This was the first book I've read by Zig Ziglar. This very charming book details his childhood in America's rural South in the midst of the Depression, his early adult years, and adulthood. I'll write about the book in reverse chronological order.

I especially enjoyed the part about his early adulthood, where he writes honestly about the uncertainty he went through. His adulthood part was interesting as well, although he tended to compress the 40+ years a little too much. After chronicling his childhood so meticulously, the later parts of the book seem a bit lacking in detail.

His writing about his early childhood was very entertaining, a little sentimental, and excessively moralizing. Zig had a lot of mentors and learned valuable lessons, but he tends to stretch them too thin and draw almost too many morals to them. That he learned a lot about character and whatnot is unsurprising (he is a motivational speaker, after all), but it gets somewhat boring, a contrast to his humorous and vivacious "See You at the Top!

For this, I give Zig an "excellent rating", which corresponds to 4 out of 5 stars in my humble book.

5 out of 5 stars Better late than never!.......2006-05-24

Zig is a very humble man. He tells the story of his life in stages that are inspirational in that the mundane things in life are all part of the whole that we experience. The early years in his life are full of mishaps in his opinion, yet lead to a logical place that may not have existed otherwise.

His story of his older daughter's (Suzan's) illness and death, and the reaction of some of his mentors and partners in understanding, is one of the most touching renditons I have ever read and it is beatifully preserved by his younger daughter (Julie - you kind of feel the hominess of the family in the reading of this book) who edits his writing.

Also, "The Wall of Gratitude", and how each person on it influenced him is another unselfish display of how he has become who he is. It is as if these mentors of his should have their pictures hung in many more dens/offices throughout the country because of their influence to him that he has passed to so many others.

I met Zig and felt his sincerety in his conversation with me that I hope to duplicate in all I do - that's how good the meeting was! I can see why God called him to do what he does. In his autobiography he states all of the facts (and faults) of his personal life unashamedly. I do not think I could have shared some of the things he shared; too personal, but, his humility is seemingly endless.

I first saw Zig in a sports motivational video in high school in the seventies. I got a lot of motivation out of it. It has stuck with me for all of these years: yet I was amused and amazed me to read about the experiences he had around that time and to the time at the end of this book.

Obviously this review has come three years after the last one, yet it should show how timeless this story is, and, like Zig's salvation, it truly is "better late than never."

4 out of 5 stars Stinkin Thinkin.......2003-10-14

I was exposed to Zig's philosophy some years ago and have read See You at the Top more than once. His "Check up from the Neck up" and the need to prevent "Hardening of the Attitudes" and "Stinkin Thinkin" are well ingrained. This was an interesting read and learning about his background and history was very well laid out and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Zig has integrity and character.......2003-09-05

Zig's life was a great testament to what he teaches. He walks the walk. His life is in balance, and even through tragedy, still reached out to make a difference for all lives he touched through his motivational seminars. His character is outstanding, and his level of integrity speaks for itself.

This book shows the good, the bad, and the ugly. Life has not always been rosy for Zig, but he is living proof that you can overcome anything. As he always says: "you can have anything you want if you just help enough people get what they want".

This book shows that Zig has faults just like the rest of us, and he makes that really clear in this book. He is humble and in some cases ashamed of some of his past behavior. No sugar coating in this one. The fact that he is such a strong christian is also satisfying to those of us who are believers. He makes it very clear who gets the credit for all of the blessings in his life.

This book is a great read, and will be hard to put down if you are a fan. True to form, it's humorous with only a hint sorrow in some parts. He really is an amazing person.

5 out of 5 stars Zig Makes A Big Difference.......2003-07-29

If you ever need an inspirational help of great success in life then I would recommend Zig Ziglar. Ziglar is author of best-seller, 'I'll See You At The Top' and many other motivational books, has helped thousands improve their lives to achieve that success in every aspect of living. As you read his auto-biography you'll learn about his remarkable story how he beat the odds and applied it to the teachings of Jesus Christ. You will learn to take the next step in your plan and keep God's plan at the center of your plans just as Zig did. His approach is a down-home, wholesome manner with the business savvy of a wise, honest salesman. Most of what he learn of being successful and the importance of networking with honest and wise mentors. The first part of the book tells of his early life and the family that shaped his destiny. In his early adult years he was hard-working and used his knowledge to make money and there were times he made financial mistakes as a result of foolish decisions. This was a time God wasn't a part of his life where his life had no meaning or purpose. The last part of the book, is about his change in life when he reflected back on the moral values in his early childhood and his mother. He then gave his life to Christ. He then found his purpose as a public speaker. From then on instead of his self-centered ambition he gave it all to God. And Zig has been successful ever since. Like Norman Vincent Peale, Zig applied biblical principles to the goals he has with the plans God manifest in the center of his life. Zig's secret is never quit, have faith in God and a whole lotta love. He's a mentor you can trust with a solution. Wish there were more like Zig.

This book tells how Zig started off with a very humble beginning and yet he rose to the top. This is something he tells us in all of his books that any of us can do.

Zig is very candid about his faith in God and what it has meant in his life. It is a very inspirational story.

I enjoyed this inspiring story of a coach who cared and the players who kept a promise and a coach who overcame illness to coach a team that went undefeated. I enjoyed this book and recomend anyone who loves a motivational and inspiring story. Couch did a great job of replaying the 60's and depicting the story.

1 out of 5 stars Eulogy to SmashMouth Football Gurus.......2001-08-07

A brave autobiographical attempt to transform the author's high school coach into the second coming of Lomardi. This "Inspirational Playbook For Life" praises such coaching gems as: "I said, 'Coach, I heard something crack and I'm afraid I broke it.' Coach replied, "I think the crack you heard was you breaking that kid's leg. They're getting an ambulance and a stretcher to carry him off the field." Then (with incredible sensitivity and inspiration,) "Coach looked at me and said, "Go on, run off the field and be a hero," and more incredibly, "Well, we'll send him a card next week." The opposing quarterback they were referring to suffered a compound femur fracture in three places, and we learn "They may have to put a pin in his leg." The author's "coach" suffered the final misfortune of a drawn-out bout with cancer...an opponent nobody could knock out of the game. Pep talks evolved to Bob Richards' plagerism and football-as-life lessons. Enter inspiration. Danny White must have read a different manuscript before penning his introduction; for that matter, Couch must have played for a different coach than I did...I played 3rd string for Ravsten and his henchmen; I'd call my paean "Football Through the Earholes: Violent Lessons As Teenage Cannon-fodder "

If you are truly inerested in a guide book to professional people in the industry, this is a book to ignore. It is entirely dated to the point of absolute frustration. I wonder where the information was gathered. It certainly was not researched. What this is is a misleading "guide" book in an area that shifts daily. It would have been not so bad good if the author had given some guidance on where to find current information, but apparently he thought his list of names was enough.

        Book Description

In this ground-shaking, breath-taking cri de coeur, Bowden delves with love-driven fury for the roots of our brutal history in this once-brave New World. The figures he casts before us-from Pancho Villa to a modern-day drug lord, from General Sherman to a skid-row Sioux named Robert Sundance-trace a story not so much of rapaciousness as of fear and loathing. Bowden twines it with the natural history of the hammer orchid, a carnivore whose deceptive delicacy comes to stand for the terror and hypocrisy that have perverted our love of the land, its peoples, and our very natures.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars IT JUST DOES NOT HAVE IT.......2005-04-02

Very few books I start that I just cannot finish. This, I admit, was one of them. I did give it two stars because the author does have a way with words, but that is about it. This is quite typical of some of the junk writing which came out of the 60s and 70s as a result of one too many acid trips. You kind of have to feels sorry for the author. He must be a rather sad and miserable sort of an individual. Just about anyone with an ounce of observance in them can find things to whine and rant about...the author takes this to new heights. I would strongly suggest the author drive another 7,000 thousand miles and take another look. I suppose if you are a sort of "anti-everything-guy or gal" type, you might find this work interesting. Myself, I found the work to be depressing and not all that coherent. I cannot recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars Blood Orchid gets hammered........2002-11-22

Blood Orchid is filled and covered with blood. But blood brings healing. It is hard to write a good review when I have some mixed feelings about this book. I have read a few books with similar topics this past summer and they leave me numb, but I am captivated by Bowden's metaphor, whether I like it or not. He definitely has a way with words and word pictures.

In the midst of his openness and honesty he sounds as if he is regurgitating a bitter pill someone has given him to swallow. This makes the book even more compelling and hard to put down, always returning to the lesson in botany and zoology provided by the wasp and the hammer orchid. After all, are we not biological beings also? Is not everything connected by a thin cord? It is like the picture of Coyote Man being the trickster and the tricked, with irony everywhere.

        4 out of 5 stars 7,000 miles to coherency.......2002-11-22

Blood Orchid is a work that defies categorization, it is as much a history of America as it is a piece of philosophy. Bowden writes in his introduction, "I have clocked 7,000 miles by truck in the last thirty days and I am hunkered in a motel room high in the Rocky Mountains and yet no nearer to God." Nor to a concrete point either it would seem. Bowden writes about war, and how we go about perpetuating our own destruction through it. It is in this social critique that I see Bowden's rant moving with a purpose. That purpose is to reveal life for what it really is, and he does so successfully. Blood Orchid is a piece of philosophy of life, albeit a fairly depressing one, Bowden writes about life as we have made it, and in that does an excellent job.

        3 out of 5 stars A wild ride.......2002-11-22

I'd be lying if I said this was an easy read, but Bowden warns the reader from the beginning that he travels fast. The subject matter is more than brutal and disturbing. It is enough to make you regret that you are a human being, but I am not sure that Bowden's goal is too make you feel hopeless. In many ways he is optimistic about the future in spite of the bloody past he graphically offers to the reader. He wants to move beyond explaining the past because as he says, "What is explained can be denied but what is felt cannot be forgotten." It would be impossible to read this book and not feel something, but the bigger sin in Bowden's eyes would be forgetting what you felt. The rawness and 85 mph pace of the prose alone makes this a difficult book to forget, but the subject matter and content moves you to question the deeper issues that plague a society that has forgotten how to feel, how to love, and how to live. I found portions of the book difficult to grasp and the book is mentally and emotionally exhausting in many ways. This does not diminish the importance of Bowden's message, but as a reader you need to be prepared to spend some time digesting the material.

4 out of 5 stars The newest "notes from the underground" by Charles Bowden.......2002-11-22

Charles Bowden's "Blood Orchid" saturates his readers with honest, stream of consciousness reality from the depths of his cynical, twisted mind.Graphic sexual references hide around every corner tempting readers to find out what is this guy up to.Injections of candid truths relating Charles Keating are fascinating forays into our economic standards and the monsters created by a free market society.Stories don't get more brutal that this without real blood.A good read for those that understand their own capabilities, limitations, and appreciate the ugly potential of being human.Dostoyevsky would have been proud.

          Book Description

As far as sequels go, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 belongs in the ranks of The Godfather: Part II – a sequel that improves on the original. What made the first release of Elements so impressive wasn't that it was especially easy to use; it was how much of Photoshop's power you could get for such a low price. Elements 2.0, however, takes big steps forward in both power and ease.

Photoshop Elements 2.0 For Dummies explains this program from the ground up, assuming that you know absolutely nothing about the program or even about image editing in general. But step by step, concept by concept, tool by tool, you'll gradually work through a thorough examination of Photoshop Elements 2.0 and the incredible things it can do for your images.

While this book is organized in logical order, with the lofty idea that you'll read it cover to cover, the best thing about Photoshop Elements 2.0 For Dummies is that you don't have to. Feel free to skip around if you get restless. There are even 16 color pages stuck in the book to show you things that can't be explained in black and white. You'll gain insight into

Just as one CD contains both the Windows and Mac versions of Elements, so this one took tells both Windows and Mac users everything they need to know to use Elements on their system of choice. And because Elements 2.0 runs on both Windows XP and Mac OS X, we've also updated the figures in this book to show off the spiffy look of these two new operating systems.

As an Elements user, you've got a whole lot of Photoshop power coiled up inside your computer, waiting for you to discover how to harness it. Photoshop Elements 2.0 For Dummies is your guide for doing just that.

3 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 2 Joke Book.......2006-12-30

While I found a lot of help from reading the book it was not worth wading through the author's feeble attempt to be a comedian. If I want to read comedy I will buy a joke book.
I would certainly not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Bit Humor Makes the Learning Easier.......2006-12-15

The real difference between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements is the price. Looking at Amazon, Photoshop (CS2) is $579, Photoshop Elements is $69.99.

When Photoshop came along, it was a marvelous gift to photographers. Adobe took the package and every year or so came out with a new version having dozens if hot hundreds of new feature. Like a lot of other software, the new features became more and more esoteric as everything really important was built into the package.

Result, Adobe, like other software companies, came out with 'light' versions of their mainstream products. Photoshop Elements is one of these. It's kind of like taking a step backwards for a version or two. The result is that Photoshop Elements really is Photoshop with a few high end (and infrequently used) features removed.

If you are just starting out, I recommend that you start with Elements. You'll use the standard Photoshop screens, the standard commands, the same philosophy. And this book is an excellent way to get started. The For Dummies books are the fastest way to get up and running I know. They are well written, informative, and concentrate on what you need to know to get started.

3 out of 5 stars The cutesiness is dull, dull, dull.......2005-10-25

I learned a lot from this book, but it was annoying to have to plow through a lot of meaningless chit chat to do so. The book could be 25% shorter without all the senseless yammer--which was not that funny. When I'm trying to understand a particular tool or function, I don't appreciate the extra time it takes to read about how pixel resolution is like grandma's oatmeal cookies, or whatever.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Help.......2005-08-14

I always had difficulty with the original manual. On a given subject it referred you to another place in the manual. The Dummies book does a better job of covering a subject in it's entirety. The index is also much better.

4 out of 5 stars Much Better Than The Manual.......2004-09-17

I learned a lot from this book and it really turned Photoshop from something intimidating into a very powerful tool that I now enjoy using. My photos are much better now and my wife is amazed at how well I can salvage seemingly "ruined" pictures.
