Book Description
One of the classic Alan Moore works is finally back in print with totally re-mastered artwork and lettering. Adman Timothy Hole has everything going for him and has now been handed the biggest assignment of his life, marketing a major cola in Russia. But his smooth life begins to unravel as he is stalked by a demonic child that makes him question not just who he is, but how he really affects those around him. It is about the little murders that we all have to make each day just to get by. The little assassinations of tiny things. Really, how much damage can be done by a small killing? As an added bonus, this graphic novel includes new commentary articles by both Alan Moore and the artist, Oscar Zarate.
Customer Reviews:
moore's worst work?.......2007-01-19
i love alan moore, but this was a big waste of time and money. don't make the same mistake i did.
Don't expect much.......2004-06-16
This really seems more like something Alan Moore did when he had to work at being deep, like in high school. It has none of the layered complexity of anything else I've ever read by him, and whatever simple surprises there are in the story are easily figured out beforehand. Not much of anything happens in A Small Killing, and even by the late 80s (when the book was originally released) characters being stalked by demonic children was pretty stale.
So I guess consider avoiding anything Alan Moore describes as "deeply personal". He's way more interesting dealing with superheroes and society at large. I'd have given it a rating of 1 if the art weren't kind of cool.
Not bad, but not worth the money.......2004-04-04
This short tale might be of interest to a 13 year old who has little exposure and knowledge of adult sexual issues such as abortion, and is moving from fantasy comics to more adult themed stories, but is kind of dull for the mature reader. The idea behind this book seems like a good idea, but with the cliche comic formula involving flashbacks and the theme of rebirth, etc, it hardly seems worth putting it all together for publication. It's not exactly provocative or an entertaining read. It's not badly done, just not very interesting, but passes the time I suppose.
A weak Outer Limits or Twilight Zone-like story at best.
Painfully adult.......2003-10-06
Nobody wears tights, and the most important things happen when you're not looking, but this delivers what 'Big Numbers' only promised. Brilliant.

Book Description
In 1991, after decades of skepticism and disbelief, the existence of psychic powers was finally, definitively proven. Today, an estimated 1% of the world's population possesses psychic abilities. These people are not super-heroes. In most ways, they're just ordinary people, living ordinary lives. They have families, careers, and dreams; they eat, sleep, live... and die. One such person is precognitive Detective Owen Young. Small Gods Volume 1: Killing Grin tells the story of the terrible decision he faces when a secret he's kept for years - a secret that could send not only him, but many of his friends to prison - falls into the hands of an opportunistic criminal. This 128-page trade paperback features the sold-out, critically acclaimed Small Gods #1-#4, plus sketches, pin-ups, covers, and special bonus features never before seen!
Customer Reviews:
Great art with a story that never clicks.......2005-04-05
"Small Gods" is set in a world in which people have psychic abilities, including precognition, telepathy, and telekinesis. One would think that the story that followed would be fascinating. Unfortunately, the story found in "Killing Grin" represents a pretty basic, cliche story with little in the way of a pay-off.
Owen Young is a detective in the Denver Police Department. He's precognitive, using visions of future events to prevent crimes, or at least to apprehend the criminals in the immediate aftermath of their crimes. However, when Owen and his partner capture a telekinetic, the perp uses his powers to dredge up a dark secret Owen is carrying. The revelation of that secret leads to chaos for Owen and his colleagues, as they debate whether to take cross the ultimate line to protect Owen's life and career.
I picked this story up based on the strength of its setting, its art, and good word-of-mouth. I'm a Denver native, and the number of comic books set in Denver is minuscule. After flipping though the book, the art just blew me away. Juan Ferreyra is a talented artist. His line work is a photo-realistic style that is absolutely fantastic. Further, it was a pleasure to see numerous Denver landmarks depicted in a comic book.
Unfortunately, Jason Rand's story just doesn't click. The "cop with a dark secret contemplating murder" storyline has been done in just about every medium of fiction. The story felt like a weak episode of "NYPD Blue" with mental powers. Despite that, if the characters had been a little more solidly developed, I still might have enjoyed it. They aren't. The characters are mostly stereotypes, none of whom are ever quite likeable or sympathetic. As such, the book never retained my interest.
I really wanted to like this book. But ultimately, it was nothing but pretty pictures with limited story that never clicks.

Book Description
Moore and Zarate collaborate on a graphic novel full of irony and tension. Adman Timothy Hole is about to get a crack at the the big one: selling the diet drink sensation Flite to the U.S.S.R. Except someone wants him dead. Little murders, tiny betrayals, the small homicides with which we ease the passage of our lives -- these are the stuff of A Small Killing.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent manipulation of the medium.......2003-07-16
This is an unusual comic, even for Alan Moore. Jammed with intertexuality, and literary refrences, it is a reasonably dense read. It is comparable to Mordecai Richler, without the humour, and that is my main complaint. It is as serious as comics can get and really quite striking at certain moments. The fact that the main character is an advertising executive, allows Zarate and Moore to use images that speak volumes about this characters inner turmoil. Classic comic techniques are used throughout the book but in an interesting manner that you probably haven't seen before. If your curious what a comic can do, or how close the medium has come to speaking with as much complexity as a novel, then this is the comic for you. It doesn't quite reach the level of great literature but it does come frighteningly close. Some of the horror techniques that Moore developed in Swamp Thing are used to a different effect here, and quite well I might add. Personally I like more humour in my fiction, especially serious fiction, but this is a great stab at literature for a comic artist... quite impresive.
Disturbingly excellent.......2000-05-05
Stories about "real people" are common enough in your average grocery store paperback section, but in comic books, they're something of a rarity. When you're going that route, it definitely takes somebody with the talent and genius of Alan Moore to pull it off not only successfully, but brilliantly.
Moore has an off-putting sense of mysticism that fills the book, all the while leaving the reader in complete suspense the entire time, even at such mundane things as the main character waiting to use the bathroom. Moore's characterization is so powerful, so twisted, that even without a detailed plot backing them up, they'd be worth a good story in and of themselves.
Winner of a whole shebang of awards, this is a "comic book" that is definitely written for adults; and for once, not because of gratuitous sex or violence, but because it will challenge every erg of intellect you have to spare.

Hogan is Great.......2007-09-20
Hogan is as good as Crais, Coben and Connelly. He captures the flavor of a small dead milltown and the hopelessness of its people (reminds one of Russo's towns) while spinning the web of a terrific mystery.
The mystery builds slowly. The reader knows immediately that there is the good new guy on the police force - Maddox - and the police force is lousy with corruption. It is also apparent that Maddox is the hometown wonder boy who left years ago who returned for his mother's funeral. No one knows why he stayed and became a part-time policeman. Slowly, the plot developes. It is told in the perspective of many characters, which keeps the book moving even as events plod too slowly for all involved - good guys and bad guys alike.
Eventually the mystery unfolds and then the book, which was tight with tension, flies into a fast-paced action-packed ending without being contrived. This change of pacing, which Hogan does so smoothly, separates this mystery from run-of-the-mill entries in this genre.
The characters are all good. Maddox in particular is interesting. Although close-mouthed (like so many good heroes) he is the classic "still waters runs deep" Gary Cooper type.
This is highly recommended. Well-written mysteries with good plots are always a great find.
Seamy small town thriller.......2007-03-14
Chuck Hogan's "The Killing Moon", a convoluted thriller based on the strange circumstances occuring in the small dying rural Massachusetts town of Black Falls, reads like a written version of TV's "Twin Peaks". Homeboy Donny Maddox recipient of a town sponsored college scholarship returns to Black Falls after a 15 year hiatus. The town is in a state of decline since the closing of the mill some years ago, which providede the main source of employment. At the urgting of now retired police chief emeritus Pinty, a close personal friend, he joins the local police force on a part time basis.
Maddox soon discovers that corruption runs rampant within the local fuzz headed by the Pail brothers, Bucky and Eddie. Maddox is soon immersed in investigating a series of crimes involving violence and drugs. Clues point to a local man and sexual offender Dill Sinclair as being the driving force, however his whereabouts are unknown. When local new age internet salesman Randall Frond is discovered brutally murdered, the cesspool of town depravity boils over. The state police lead by macho man trooper Leo Hess are called in.
As the investigation continues, we discover that Maddox might have ulterior motives for his presence in town. As the state police and Maddox dig deeper, the full extent of the town's secrets become revealed.
Hogan jumping from one character to the other gives us bits and pieces of information to aid us in unravelling the mysteries behind this bizarre town.
Greaet Book!.......2007-02-20
I really love Chuck Hogan's writing and was looking forward to this new book. Living in MA it is exciting that his writing reflexs places that are very familar to me. This book started out slow but grew in excitemnet quickly. I really enjoyed all the details the author puts into his stories. Each character is developed slowly and with lots of info that makes you feel like you know them. You can picture in your mind what each person looks like and feel like you know them personally by the end of the book. I love that when I thought I had it all figured out, the plot and ending, Chuck Hogan does it again and takes you in a different direction totally. His ending are not precictable in his books and that is the same with this book. I found myself reading the last 50 or so pages in one sitting because it got too good to put down. It was worth the late night to finish it. This is one I will recommnend to my book club.
"The Killing Moon" is a well-crafted thriller!.......2007-02-15
I've had the pleasure of reading all four of Chuck Hogan's novels, and I've found each one to be more fast-paced and riveting than the next. "The Killing Moon" reads like a movie that I can't wait to see.
The characters are dynamic and well-executed, and the isolated setting of Black Falls is downright eerie, and I found the story pacing just as fluid as the swift, icy current of the Cold River. I disagree with the Booklist comment that found the narration to be bumpy. The point-of-view is clearly stated with chapter titles.
Mr. Hogan has a gift of writing powerful, visual stories that keep you hanging on his every word, your eyes glued to the pages. I gladly stayed up way past my bedtime to read this one, even though I was twisting in my seat at times! I recommend "The Killing Moon" to `Type A' readers who like to feel their pulse quicken while reading. You're sure to get a jolt from this suspenseful read.
I can't wait for the next thrill ride! Keep `em coming.
Classic Page-Turner.......2007-02-01
Chuck Hogan's latest novel, a classic suspense thriller, crafts an amazingly insightful profile of a small New England town with nowhere to go but down. Sounds depressing but actually it's not. I'm a fan of Hogan's work and with The Killing Moon, he has treated readers to one of his finest yarns yet.
With the Killing Moon, Hogan has crafted a classic page turner (or is it page-turner?) filled with uncomplicated nuance and character. Hogan artfully builds the story, drawing the reader into a hidden sub-culture of drug-fueled depravity, sketching good guys and bad guys with such complelling humanity and depth, it's hard to know who the good guy really is until the very end. Which, for me, defines a classic suspense novel.
Kudos to Chuck Hogan. Please keep writing.

One of my all-time favorite books...when you need a good laugh reach for this!.......2007-01-07
I just spotted this book again while looking at my other books, to find ones to get rid of to make room for books I am getting for cell biology and microbiology (teaching). Anyway, I'd forgotten how very funny this collection is, and it got me to wondering about one of the major problems in this country today is the declining of American humor. We especially need political humorists that write rather than be on television or radio because oftentimes they say something that if not written down will be forgotten. So many of the humorists in this book are from the same time period, the early to mid-1900s, and many were journalists or writers. We don't seem to have those guys any more and that is our loss. We need people to say sarcastic and pithy and witty comments to the incredibly stupid things done in politics, corporations, and modern society. This is one of those books my husband hates to have me reading, because I want to share all this stuff with him, and I will read it late in the night, laughing my head off. Luckily, he's a heavy sleeper, or he would be up with me all night!
A very enjoyable book. They should definitely think about reissuing and updating this book. Surely Jay Leno, or the political humorists today on CNN and comedy channels must say something occasionally that is worth repeating for generations to enjoy. I sure wish I could come up with retorts such as these guys wrote (and some women) as quickly as they did, but unfortunately, that gene bypassed me and went to my husband and kids. Sometimes you just need a good laugh, no matter what your usual reading preferences are!

A welcome addition to any grouch's library.......2002-05-26
Those among us who are generally grouchy and pessimistic can find solace and support in the pages of this book. Indeed, the Portable Curmudgeon Redux is a celebration of the art of complaining. You don't have to be a misanthrope to enjoy the humor, but eternally happy, effervescent souls will find little reason to even glance at these pages. This is the province of realism, satire, rapier wit, irritability, and--above all--humor; this book really doesn't take itself too seriously. The book offers a dictionary of quotations for such selected words and concepts as love, marriage, life, lawyers, and advertising, the jewels of wisdom coming from such individuals as Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, and H. L. Mencken. Several specific topics (such as American Presidents, music, and fine art) are singled out for special attention. There are also interviews with personalities such as P.J. O'Rourke, Larry Gelbart, Florence King, and Carrie Fisher. No subject is taboo or safe from the skewering stick of sarcasm, and many of the statements are thought-provoking or just plain funny enough to make special note of. Amuse your friends or pester your enemies with curmudeonly quotes on all manner of subjects.
A KEEPER.......1999-12-06
Calling all cars! Calling all cars! Be on the look-out for a funny, acerbic collection of smart-alec quotes from the 20th century's greatest cynical wags. Suspect is armed and dangerous with several witticisms, hilarious one-liners and quips. Proceed carefully; you could die laughing.

Book Description
Is popular culture merely a process of creating, marketing, and consuming a final product, or is it an expression of the artist's surroundings and an attempt to alter them? Noted Argentine/Mexican anthropologist Néstor García Canclini addresses these questions and more in Transforming Modernity, a translation of Las culturas populares en el capitalismo. Based on fieldwork among the Purépecha of Michoacán, Mexico, some of the most talented artisans of the New World, the book is not so much a work of ethnography as of philosophy--a cultural critique of modernism. García Canclini delineates three interpretations of popular culture: spontaneous creation, which posits that artistic expression is the realization of beauty and knowledge; "memory for sale," which holds that original products are created for sale in the imposed capitalist system; and the tourist outlook, whereby collectibles are created to justify development and to provide insight into what capitalism has achieved. Transforming Modernity argues strongly for popular culture as an instrument of understanding, reproducing, and transforming the social system in order to elaborate and construct class hegemony and to reflect the unequal appropriation and distribution of cultural capital. With its wide scope, this book should appeal to readers within and well beyond anthropology--those interested in cultural theory, social thought, and Mesoamerican culture.
Customer Reviews:
Utterly Fascinating.......2003-06-11
"Transfoming Modernity" tells the story of the popularization of Mexican culture and crafts. He shows how the desires and tastes of tourists have homogenized traditional Mexican crafts into the few forms favored by tourists (like those associated with death and skulls). He also talks of the folklorization of festivals. Festivals ostensibly in honor of saints have become huge tourist attractions, which have lead to their mutation into little more than a market to sell goods. Very, very interesting and theoretical look at how the global affects the local, and at culture change...something people often talk about but never demonstrate this effectively.

Customer Reviews:
I expected better!.......2004-04-13
Serious puzzle solvers should probably stay clear of this one. Its cleverness is a bit too sophmoric; the definitions are too often imprecise; and there are too many surprising errors contained within. On the whole I found the experience annoying and couldn't wait to finish the book and throw it away.
Awesome.......2001-09-18
Bought this for my mom, who is an avid, competitive crossworder.
She fell in love with this and had a hard time forcing herself
to put it down.
Theme puzzles abound.......2001-08-08
This crossword puzzle book provides a satisfying collection of crosswords by a 'word wizard' whose books on language both entertain and educate, and a puzzle constructor. Word Play Crosswords Volume 1 is recommended for advanced crossword puzzle solvers who want a greater challenge than most. Theme puzzles abound.
The Hardest Crosswords You'll Ever See.......2001-08-07
I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of Mr. Lederer's work.
Little did I know it would destroy me!
The rules are a bit unclear in parts, however. While most of the puzzles are made of rhymes and puns, not every word in the puzzle falls into these categories. Sometimes you may be searching for the rhyme of your solution for an hour, then realize no rhyme is required.
It may not be for me, as I don't spend too much time with crosswords. However, if you consider yourself rather agile with your vocabulary, or a master of puns, this book will be a true test of your skill.

Best way to learn Photo Shop........2007-08-04
I had received PSE 2 from a peripheral purchase (printer or scanner, I can't remember) and was intrigued by what I had heard in general about Photo Shopping pictures. However, the tutorials that came along with the help file weren't all that helpful so I put off learning the program. For some reason a bee got in my bonnet and I decided to look into the program again. I searched Amazon and found this book and after reading the reviews ordered my copy.
I can honestly say I was quite impressed. Usually, How-To books can get you headed in the right direction but for the most part you will only go to the chapters that you are interested in. This book is different. Each session leads into the next building upon what you have already learned. The instructions are fantastic. They are clear and the visuals that accompany them are easy to see and follow. The CD provides all of the photos you work with so there is no guess work. You can stop in a session and come back a few days later without having to reread everything again. At the end of each session there is an excellent review over what you have just learned. The author definitely has a good teaching style.
I can't say enough positive about the book. If you have ever been interested in learning Photo Shop here is your perfect opportunity.
Photoship.......2007-04-19
This book has some good practice lessons. One thing I didn't like is that every lesson involves creating a project using sports pictures. I would have liked to seen lessons creating projects other than sports, like portraits or landscapes. Other than that, good basic lessons.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 Saviour.......2007-03-08
Both my wife and I love this book. I received Photoshop Elements 2 with my camera and had trouble figuring out how to use it. My wife read somewhere about how good and easy this book was to use. The key to this book is that it explains step by step how to use all of Photoshop Elements 2s' tools. It is a lot to learn and takes time, but you can redo each leasson to get better and better at it. The key is to use it! It's nice to have this book to fall back on when you forget how to use a certain tool because you haven't had to use it for some time. The lessons are well planned out and the samples and photo work are all excellent. If you only work part time on your photos this book is a must have to make using this program easier.

I like the book very much, BUT "DID NOT RECEIVE" THE TRAINING CD THAT WAS TO BE INCLUDED. Is there a chance of getiing, I will even pay for!!!!!!
Thats what prompted me to purchase book.
Thanks much and have a good day. Jerry
