Anything by Frank & Ollie is golden with memories of the golden age of disney animation, and the part they played as part of walts top animators, "the nine old men" as they were lovingly known. Also be sure to get the documentary video "Frank & Ollie" to see for yourself what wonderful guys these two gents really are.

Another MUST HAVE..........1999-05-14

Though not as 'deep' as The Illusion of Life, the book Too Funny for Words is a must-have for all animators and story people who want to peek into the serious world of creating movie magic... It is THE book on the subject of 'sight-gags'. (Remember to also get Frank&Ollie's Greatest Disney Villains and The Making of Bambi books! - You already have The Illusion of Life, of course!)

Good read!.......2007-02-02

Michael Walsh's novel As Time Goes By is a great companion to the film Casablanca. I especially enjoyed the background Walsh provided for Rick Blaine. It's top notch. Fans of Cablanca should definitley give As Time Goes By a try.

Engaging "What If".......2006-12-12

I am a huge fan of the movie "Casablanca," yet I really didn't look forward to this book. Granted, the movie had many flaws but it is a classic and how can a classic be - in any way - added to or modified? I know that many fans of the movie consider the ending to be a bit of let down and oftentimes wonder if Steve and Ilsa ever meet up again, and if they do what happens.

This novel answers those questions.

It also answers any questions one may have have about Steve's beginnings.

In essence, this novel is actually 2 stories in one - a prequel and a sequel, woven together. The problem with that format being, the two are really not related in any way. They are injected into each other, sometimes rather harshly. It is unnerving. And I actually found myself more involved and looking forward to reading the story of Rick's life before Casablanca. Why is that? It was the more action oriented of the two. Or so it seemed to me. Conspiracies, double-crosses, love stories - just a whole mix of activity.

In the ongoing saga of life after Casablanca, the story seemed to drag - terribly. Ilsa can't decide who she loves. Rick loves Ilsa and doesn't care if Laszlo knows it. Dreariness! The story finally heats up in the last few pages, but by then I simply didn't care anymore. Surprising, as Rick Blaine is one of my favorite characters!

Mr. Walsh has a talent for writing, but he really should have picked either a prequel or sequel, and stuck with just one instead of trying to write about everything all in one book. I think his energies were spread too thin. Or it appeared that way to me. The book is engaging and is certainly an easy enough read, but it doesn't sweep one away into another era and allows the reader to become involved with the lives of these people, as the movie does. And that's a shame. Or perhaps the classics are just better left alone. They got to be classics all by themselves, anyway.

The author, Michael Walsh, would have been a godsend for the producers of Casablanca in the 1940's. He has done what a half century of writers have failed to do- He has written an effective sequel to the beloved movie.

I liked how he was faithful to the original story but took a few risks as well, the most prominent example being reimagining Bogart's Ric Blaine as a former Jewish gangster from New York named Yitzak Balin.

His approach was inspired- writing a story that was both a prequel and a sequel to the original story. Also, he perfectly captures the essence of the movie's atmosphere and the dialogue and mannerisms of not only the main characters, but the supporting ones

After reading this, I can not believe it wasn't a huge bestseller when it was first published- given all of the fans of the movie. I also can not believe that is has yet to be made into a film- or a least a good tv miniseries!

Please do yourselves a favor and LISTEN to this book on tape. I'll guarantee your opinion of As Time Goes By WILL change (and perhaps earn Walsh more well deserved stars). Herrmann and Redgrave do a fantastic job with the characters of this terrific story. They put so much life into the characters of this novel, you'll swear you're watching the rest of the movie. I enjoyed this book very, very much and began listening right after TCMs Christmas showing of Casablanca in Dec. of '04.

Thanks Michael, Edward, Lynn, and the producers of this fantastic book on tape. A job well done!

I think this book didi a good job of capturing the spirit of the movie, but fell a little short in the execution. I am glad I now know where Ilsa and Rick came from, but somehow the book just doesn't do the original story justice.

Everything you wanted to know about the movie.......2002-08-02

This commemorative book, published in 1992, certainly does its job of commemorating the movie Casablanca. It's a slender book with tons of photos of the actors, sets, and posters from the movie, and packed with everything you seemingly would want to know about it.

You find out about what led to Casablanca's production, its inspiration, how the actors were chosen, the history occurring at the time that helped it along, the quarrels on set, the difficulties with budget and timing, the process for coming up with the ending of the movie. You learn about the director's accent and odd way of speaking that sometimes confused everyone. (When he asked for a "poodle" and such a dog was brought, he angrily tried to clarify that what he wanted was a "puddle". ) You learn about Bogart's standoffishness to Ingrid Bergman, and Peter Lorre's continual playing of practical jokes on the cast. There's a bio about each actor, and how the movie affected his or her career, and a listing of movies that were intended copies or spinoffs. This is a great book if you love Casablanca, its actors, or want to know about moviemaking of that era.

You have to be a real dummy to get this book. If you have the Internet you can get this book for free (File-Sharing,) or just google it and check out some sites. I'm still cussing to this day for getting this junk. This book doesn't tell you anything that the burning software of your choice won't tell you. If you think I'm lying then fine, get the book but, be ready to start cussing. Hell I'm cussing as I type...

Clear and easy to learn about the new world........2006-11-05

I am not a beginner, yet the new CD and DVD Recording issues have become part of my world. I am thrilled with the opportunities it presents to Dummies like me. So when selecting something easy, I thought the Dummy books were right up my alley. I was right. This book talks in a down to earth style that doesn't intimidate me. It makes me think I'm not such a dummy after all. Now when I purchase DVD Plus and Minus R and RW I have a better idea what to buy.

How Not to Deal with Controversy.......2006-03-04

True, there are many controversies raging about copying DVDs and copyrights. I suspect we are in a transition zone with all this and "the industry" will figure out how to help people love and cherish their DVDs rather than simply calling everyone a pirate. Having said that, I can also understand why an author of such a book wouldn't want to "say too much" about this controversy, especially if he his looking over his shoulder at "the lawyers." I was trying to think of an analogy to express my disapointment in this book (and this isn't a good one) but it goes like this: You want to go to Israel and you buy a book on "Israel for Dummies" and you search for something, anything on the controversy of the wall they are building. But instead of finding a discussion of the controversy you find a few off-handed quips about "There's a wall going up and it's causing some controversy. 'Nuff said."
"'Nuff said"? Hel-lo? Were dummies out here, that's why we bought the dumb book!
There might be some useful information for some people, but I was sorely disappointed.
