Why is the hero quest so persistently renewed and retold? In what ways does this universal myth manifest itself in American cinema? And what is the significance of the popularity of these modern myths?

The Hero and the Perennial Journey Home in American Film by Susan Mackey-Kallis is an exploration of the appeal of films that recreate and reinterpret this mythic structure. She closely analyzes such films as E.T., the Star Wars trilogy, It's a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, Field of Dreams, The Piano, Thelma and Louise, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Elements of the quest mythology made popular by Joseph Campbell, Homer's Odyssey, the perennial philosophy of Aldous Huxley, and Jungian psychology all contribute to the compelling interpretive framework in which Mackey-Kallis crafts her study. She argues that the purpose of the hero quest is not limited to the discovery of some boon or Holy Grail, but also involves finding oneself and finding a home in the universe.

The home that is sought is simultaneously the literal home from which the hero sets out and the terminus of the personal growth he or she undergoes during the journey back. Thus the quest, Mackey-Kallis asserts, is an outward journey into the world of action and events which eventually requires a journey inward if the hero is to grow, and ultimately necessitates a journey homeward if the hero is to understand the grail and share it with the culture at large. Finally, she examines the value of mythic criticism and addresses questions about myth currently being debated in the field of communication studies.

Interesting.......2007-02-21

This book by Susan Mackey-Kallis provides an interesting approach to classic movies like Star Wars, The Natural, Lion King, 2001, etc. using a mythological perspective. The ideas of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung are illustrated using examples from these films. I found the book to be very informative. A good read if you are at all interested in film or mythology. Another good book to check out by the same author is "Oliver Stone's America," which takes a similar approach to Stone's films.

Here, Leavitt crafts a fascinating genealogy of domestic advice, based on her readings of hundreds of manuals spanning 150 years of history.

Over the years, domestic advisors have educated women about everything from modernism and morality to sanitation and design. Their writings helped create the idealized vision of home held by so many Americans, Leavitt says. Investigating cultural themes in domestic advice written since the mid-nineteenth century, she demonstrates that these works, which found meaning in kitchen counters, parlor rugs, and bric-a-brac, have held the interest of readers despite vast changes in women's roles and opportunities.

Domestic-advice manuals have always been the stuff of fantasy, argues Leavitt, demonstrating cultural ideals rather than cultural realities. But these rich sources reveal how women understood the connection between their homes and the larger world. At its most fundamental level, the true domestic fantasy was that women held the power to reform their society through first reforming their homes.

Just at chapter 6 and have found that the program is simple and easy to follow. Did not start with iMovie so I have no experience, which is why I feel the step by step guidance and building a previous learning is great. Good stuff for beginners.

This book is a great tool to get started with more advanced video editing, something that iMovie just can't handle. So if you've outgrown iMovie and have moved into Final Cut Express then this book will certainly give you a step by step learning process that will introduce Final Cut Express HD. The DVD that comes with it is very helpful as well because it contains enough content to be able to actually edit videos and add sounds, etc. Highly recommended.

This book is an awesome tutorial for Final Cut Express! It starts with the easiest concepts and gets one step more complicated in each chapter. The included DVD contains all the project files so you can work along with the examples in the book. I highly recommend it!

Easy to understand.......2007-04-04

I am new to FCE and a new user of an iMac. I am only on chapter 5 but I find this book very easy to follow and understand. Up to this point, I am being given an overview of each area of FCE and how to use them as well as keyboard shortcuts. The books starts with an introduction to the iMac OS X which was very helpful to me as a new user. At this point, I would highly recommend this book to a new FCE user as well as a new iMac user.

I have been working on each chapter every week and I can't wait to start the next one. Not only does it give great tutorials which are easy to follow but while you're reading it gives tooltips that make you work faster or even better, if something goes wrong how to fix the problem. I recommend this to anyone who is just starting to learn editing or just needs a quick refresher. A+

I went from knowing absolutly nothing about Final Cut Pro HD to knowing enough to be top of my class in Film Editing. The lessons go by quick to. Easy to learn and really hands on. I HIGHLY suggest buying this if you are interested in editing video.

User Friendly & Comprehensive.......2006-01-24

This was my first Apple Training Series book, and it was a very good experience. Going into this I had never learned a software package, let alone a complex one, almost completely from a book, and this experience proved it possible for me. It's no-nonsense, as comprehensive as I would want as a beginner, with very few errors, and user friendly - much more so than the tutorial that came with my software. At times it was very challenging, but that's the complexity of the s/w. Pictorials may not be as colorful as in other books, but this quickly becomes a non-issue as they are more than adequate and offset by the clarity of the text.

After several attempts at learning FCP, it was this book that did the trick. Each lesson is clear and concise. Not to mention, the book follows a logical progression in what it teaches you. In the end, I recommend this book without any reservation.

And that makes perfect sense, since the book mimics Apple's famous dedication to user-friendliness. The text is clear and concise, and the pages are filled with full color photos that mirror your computer screen. In fact, the learning process glides so seamlessly that the advanced techniques you learn feel like kid stuff.

You don't just read about how to edit, you cut and modify and apply effects to the footage supplied on the DVD-ROM included with the book. You actually key out a green screen, you actually color correct poorly-lit shots to match, you actually create a piece of music with Soundtrack and animate titles with LiveType. And in the bonus lessons included exclusively on the DVD-ROM, you actually perform a batch reverse telecine with Cinema Tools and output cut lists so that if you ever edit a project that was shot on film, you're fully prepared.
