Book Description
Gilbert Hernandez' sensationally semen-drenched fantasia is still the hottest Eros comic of them all. With a delightfully deviant cast featuring driping exploits of two spunky strippers, an oversexed psychiatrist and her philandering husband.
Customer Reviews:
Over the top erotica from Love & Rockets co-creator........1997-07-02
Gilbert Hernandez and his brother Jaime have been publishing the comic Love & Rockets for years, Gilbert's work occasionally dabbles in erotica but with this effort he gets to wallow in it. This graphic novel centers around a lisping psychiatrist and her covetous sister (characters from Love & Rockets) as well as a nymph-like stripper. The sex is completely over the top, in the end involving omnisexual pairings and aliens. Gilbert's sense of humor sets this book apart from many of the other titles in the Eros graphic novel series

Book Description
Amid the sparkle and hum of a New York City winter, Jed and his best friend, Flyer, are filming a documentary about their neighborhood. But what Jed is really in search of is his big brother, Zeke, an inspiring soul who loved jazzman Charlie "Bird" Parker, wrote electrifying poetry, and died too young. When Jed encounters a mysterious homeless girl he thinks holds the key to connecting him to Zeke, it could be the only way to unlock his deepest sorrow and discover how to be--who to be--on his own.
Customer Reviews:
Jazz improvization gone awry.......2004-03-27
Bursts of lyrical beauty are overwhelmed by a plot that doesn't build up any tension for the reader, and by a propensity on the part of the main characters to act in ways that teenage boys never do - playfully mussing eachother's hair, for example. The author also displays a need to buff up on her mastery of today's street slang.
Birdland flies.......2003-10-20
Tracy Mack's mastery of language and writing style is especially evident in her latest book, Birdland. She moves the reader effortlessly through the pages and through the streets of New York City, making them seem alive enough to smell or feel. This portrait of grief is hopeful and uplifting as three families deal with the problems they have to deal with. It's a good book for teens to read, but I recommend it for anyone.
Mesmerizing...........2003-09-25
You don't have to live in New York City to fall under the spell of this beautiful novel. Descriptions of the city are cinematic, and so affecting as the story of a boy dealing with loss unfolds. Teens will relate to Jed and the weight of what he's going through, and experience the way that weight is lifted as he works things out. Impressive and unforgettable.

In the course of his long career as a bassist, Bill Crow has rubbed elbows with such luminaries as Gerry Mulligan, Marian McPartland, Stan Getz, and Duke Ellington (who coached him through a one-nighter by pointing to the appropriate notes on his keyboard a half-beat before they were played by the orchestra). Still, Crow's vantage point is largely that of a supporting player, bouncing from gig to gig and trimming his style to fit the circumstances. Luckily for us, he's written it all down in From Birdland to Broadway, which is both a spirited account of the freelancer's hand-to-mouth existence and a portrait gallery of Crow's exalted employers. The Seattle native arrived in Manhattan in 1950 with a valve trombone, which he later exchanged for a string bass. He began his jazz education at Birdland--then a kind of world headquarters for bop and progressive swing masters--and went on to play in trios, quartets, big bands, and Broadway pit orchestras (including an eight-year run with 42nd Street). Crow's account of this musical odyssey is a delight: modest, specific, and packed with low-key comedy.
Book Description
In the 1950s, New York City's Birdland was the center of the world of modern jazz--and a revelation to Bill Crow, a wet-behind-the-ears twenty-two-year-old from Washington State. Located on Broadway between 52nd and 53rd streets, the club named for the incomparable Charlie "Bird" Parker
boasted lifesize photo murals of modern jazzmen like Dizzy Gillespie, Lennie Tristano, and, of course, Bird himself, looming large against jet black walls. Exotic live birds perched in cages behind the bar. The midget master of ceremonies, 3'9" Pee Wee Marquette, dressed in a zoot suit and loud tie,
smoked huge cigars and screeched mispronounced introductions into the microphone. And the jazz-struck young Crow would park in the bleachers till 4 am, blissfully enveloped by the heady music of Bird, Bud Powell, Max Roach, and a host of other jazz giants.
From Birdland to Broadway is an enthralling insider's account of four decades of a life in jazz. Bill Crow, journeyman bass player, superb storyteller, and author of the successful Jazz Anecdotes, here narrates many moving and delightful tales of the pioneers of modern jazz he played with and was
befriended by. We find Dizzy Gillespie, with whom Crow, because of prior commitments, regretfully declined steady work, dancing at the Royal Roost, Stan Getz sadly teetering on the brink of losing himself to drugs, and Harry Belafonte (known then as "the Cinderella Gentleman") running a lunch
counter in New York's Sheridan Square between music dates. And we also witness many of the highlights of Crow's career, such as in 1955 when the Marian McPartland Trio (with Crow on bass) was named "Small Group of the Year" by Metronome; Crow playing with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet at venues like
Storyville in Boston and Harlem's Apollo Theater (where they appeared with Dinah Washington); and the tour of the Soviet Union with Benny Goodman, a journey that might have been a high point of Crow's travels abroad but was marred by Goodman's legendary mistreatment of his band.
Moving beyond jazz clubs to the Broadway concert pit and a variety of studio gigs in the '60s, Crow encounters actors such as Yul Brynner and pop-rock acts like Simon and Garfunkel. From the great to the near-great, from Billie Holiday to Judy Holliday, Bill Crow's wealth of personal anecdotes
takes the reader from Birdland, to the Half Note, to the Playboy Club, to the footlights of Broadway. This revealing book is a marvelous portrait of the jazz world, told by someone who's been there.

Book Description
Pianist George Shearing is that rare thing, a European jazz musician who became a household name in the US, as a result of the 'Shearing sound' - the recordings of his historic late 1940s quintet. Together with his unique 'locked hands' approach to playing the piano, Shearing's quintet with guitar and vibraphone in close harmony to his own playing revolutionised small group jazz, and ensured that after seven years as Melody Maker's top British pianist, he achieved even greater success in America. His compositions have been recorded by everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Miles Davis, and his best known pieces include Lullaby of Birdland, She and Conception. His story is all the more remarkable because Shearing was born blind. His candid reminiscences include a behind the scenes experience of New York's 52nd Street in its heyday, as well as memories of a vast roll-call of professional colleagues that includes all the great names in jazz.
Customer Reviews:
A charming and often funny autobiography.......2004-05-14
This is a delightful book by one of the finest jazz pianists in the world. Born blind in Britain, in a poor neighborhood in London, who would have guessed that Mr. Shearing would end up becoming one of the true jazz greats? It's a remarkable story, made all the more enjoyable by his boundless sense of humor. The book is full of stories of practical jokes and delightful reminiscences of the other fine musicians Mr. Shearing has had the pleasure of playing with. There is not a huge amount of in-depth history or musical theory in here, this is a fun, light read, but Mr. Shearing's character shines through as does his relentless optimism about life. In a delightful touch, my copy of the book includes a braille sticker on the third page, which has Mr. Shearing's name on it. If you close your eyes and run your fingers over the sticker, and then try to imagine playing the piano, it makes Mr. Shearing's life and achievements all the more remarkable.

Book Description
In the grand tradition of the blockbusting parody Bored of the Ring, comes this uproarious literary spoof of Tolkien's other (much shorter) masterwork, The Hobbit. It has already sold 80,000 copies in hardcover--and is still going strong.
Tolkien was never this funny--and that's why we need this delicious parody. It follows the adventures of Bingo "Sac" Grabbings, a rather unremarkable Soddit of Upper Middle Earth. He ventures forth (despite very sore and swollen feet indeed!) alongside Gandef the Coughing Wizard and a band of psoriasis-scratching, who-knows-what's-in-the-pipe-puffing dwarves, as they set out to relieve the haughty dragon Smug of his ill-gotten gold. With the blockbuster box office success of the Lord of the Rings films, and the continued interest in the original books, the time is ripe for someone to poke a bit of good-natured fun at the phenomenon that is The Hobbit, and this hilarious satire succeeds brilliantly. Written by an acknowledged expert on all things Tolkien, it both salutes and skewers the classic novel, reinventing the tale of a courageous little being whose amazing persistence--and more than a bit of Soddit luck--belies his diminutive stature.
Customer Reviews:
Not as funny as you may think..........2007-05-03
Being a fan of Bored of the Rings and Doon I decided to get this book. I really love a good parody. The book starts out pretty funny if a tad gross. Maybe that's just the English in the English humor. As you follow the characters it starts to change, becoming somewhat serious, which starts to draw away the humor. Drop by drop the book starts to develop a serious theme, a theme about trust and understanding.
Now, how can you be a parody if you start changing the book into something meaningful and good? A parody can't have a serious bone in the whole body.
That is why I had to take away a few points.
Waste of your time.......2005-12-13
The book is so terrible, I cannot believe someone can write such a gibberish. It looks like an author has never been told that his sense of humor is unacceptable. It reminds me of a hopeless guy who cannot master an art of telling a joke and make others laugh. Whenever he tells a joke, other people would smile and nod their heads politely, but never tell the joker how really bad he is. The book lacks everything. It is not funny, it is utterly boring and its so called humor is anything but something you would like to read for an entertainment. Avoid it at any cost.
Could have been funnier.......2005-12-08
Swapping names like "Bilbo Baggins" for "Bingo 'Sac' Grabbings", you'd expect A.R.R.R. Roberts' 'The Soddit' to be an enjoyable romp and an entertaining parody of Tolkien's classic novel. Instead, the author settles for mediocrity and offers the reader very little in the way of humour. Saying this though, 'The Soddit' wasn't a terrible read, but it was a disappointing one.
Loan it from your local library instead.
A Hobbit with a vengeance .......2005-08-20
Like every Soddit Bingo Grabbins enjoys a comfortable life and violently attacks anyone who dares to endanger this goal, as long as the opposition is much smaller than him, that is. Indeed Bingo can be a real pain in a dark cave, certainly when one treads on his extremely painful feet. So it is no wonder that when Gandef and his company of brainless Welsh dwarves force him to go on a long and tedious adventure that Bingo is far from happy and never misses an opportunity to make this very clear. And wouldn't one agree that he has reasons enough: wasn't it indeed Gandef who completely ruined Bingo's front door with a magical spell gone haywire? And by the way, the dwarves claim that they are on mission to find enormous amounts of free gold. Well, Bingo does not believe this to be the real purpose of their quest. They are probably out just to get in some real painful trouble and how Bingo pities his painful feet.
Although The Soddit hints at being a parody of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, it basically only uses the characters of that masterpiece of fantasy and tells a completely different story. True, Gandef and Bingo do go on a quest (although no one knows what the real purpose is), but that is about where the similarities end. In a way not following the original story has been a good decision, because it gives the reader the enjoyment of not knowing what will happen next. On the other side it also reveals that the author while writing the story never really had an ending in mind and just went along to see what the story would turn out to be. But then again, this kind of book is made by its puns and jokes, and The Soddit is really packed full with them. Of course not all of them are as funny as they were intended, but on average it has enough successful ones to make this book an enjoyable and hilarious read.
Funny, If Different From the Original.......2004-04-30
This book is a parody of The Hobbit, incase you couldnt tell from the book's title. This book focuses on comedy rather than following along with Tolkien's original classic, there is a feeling that Tolkien provided the insparation for this novel but, the characters and the story arent like those in the Hobbit, which is the the norm for a parody. The humor, though a bit weak at times, was virtually non-stop. This was the only reason reason that this book earned five stars from me. The humor was the main reason I purchased this book, there were laughs and many puns. The characters were well developed and there were many details. This book is worth its money and it should be read with, not instead of, the Hobbit. The Hobbit gives you the background for the tale and you can distinguish between characters far more easily, but, nontheless, this is a very entertaining book, thats it. There isnt any true literary value other than the fact that it makes fun of a great book and will make you laugh yourself to sleep. Buy it, or at least, borrow it from your local "hobbit-hole" library.

Basics with references to American and Japanese variations.........2002-06-05
I just learned the American version of the game and was looking for some history and basics as well as pointers on strategy. This book has some good strategy sections as well as sections on the American and Japanese games as well as Chinese and other Asian variations. Addresses and descriptions of American and Japanese national organizations are given. The illustrations are small and in black and white so if you are looking for more pictures, this is not the book for you. On the other hand, the illustrations of hands were useful - you just have to look at the page more closely.
Book Description
David Gould's acclaimed first book,
Complete Maya Programming: An Extensive Guide to MEL and the C++ API, provides artists and programmers with a deep understanding of the way Maya works and how it can be enhanced and customized through programming. In his new book David offers a gentle, intuitive introduction to the core ideas of computer graphics.
Each concept is explained progressively and is fully implemented in both MEL and C++ so that an artist or programmer can use the source code directly in their own programs. Geometry and modeling are covered in detail with progressively more complex examples demonstrating all of Maya's possible programming features.
David Gould's first volume is widely regarded as the most authoritative reference on Maya programming.
Volume II continues this tradition and provides an unmatched guide for the artist and programmer tackling complex tasks.
* Covers a spectrum of topics in computer graphics including points and vectors, rotations, transformations, curves and surfaces (polygonal, NURBS, subdivision), and modeling.
* Offers insights to Maya's inner workings so that an artist or programmer can design and develop customized tools and solutions.
* Discusses problem solving with MEL (Maya's scripting language) and the more powerful and versatile C++ API, with plenty of code examples for each.
Customer Reviews:
Great book and information difficult to find.......2007-10-02
I search the information about programming in Maya for weeks. This book is essential for maya programming (MEL and C++ API) and I only find it about this theme.
I bought the volume I (Complete Maya Programming: An Extensive Guide to MEL and C++ API) and is great book too. If you going to buy this book, read before the first volume.
Excuse my english.
it is just ok.......2007-08-07
compared with the first book, this one is much less interesting or useful. The examples about the polygonal meshes, nurbs, and subdivision surfaces look useful at the beginning, but they are just so similar to each other and finally turned out to be boring and a waste of time. Lots of mathematical errors, especially in the part of matrices, transformations. So I guess I will recommend the first book than this one.
One of the best Maya book out there.......2007-02-07
I can't say enough good things about the book. Not only is it extensive, but its really well written. Its written in a way that you would want to read it and the explanation are among the best in a maya book, not to mention typically technical books are boring to read. The examples the author gives and the analogies he makes are dead on and simple to make the reader understand. Again, well written and written in a way that makes you continue to read. This is rare and I feel it deserves recognition in this achievement. On top of all this, the book content is actually Really good, very detail, and advance enough for power users. And for anyone that Really wants to know the ins and outs of maya, its architecture, and how everything works internally. Also to know some pitfalls, and there are quite a bit of tips and know hows in there from someone who has been through production and are solutions that are realistic and practical. Great Book, Highly Recommend it!
the trouble with tribbles and typos.......2006-01-22
great book on programming maya mel and api. It is the only references on this material. However my biggest complaint is that the proof reading on these sorts of manuals is just as bad as I have seen. Double negitives, typos galour, confusing examples rule the content here. I sometimes wonder if David Gould speaks english. It is as if he is explaining it to himself and not the reader. Changing emphasis in mid thought really makes for some guesswork on the readers part. A necessary evil, I guess as, I recommend his series whenever someone is asking about mel or the api.
Not for beginners.......2005-10-08
This book gets into the area where math and computers really mix. It does a thurough job of explaining how the geomitry of maya works. Hopefully there will be a third volume that covers shaders and rendering.
