Wow. David Evanier is truly a great writer. The picture he creates is clear. The words-everyone carefully poignant - and rich dialogue make up this interesting gang of short stories I consider classics in every sense. You may compare Evanier to the short list of writers who tell great stories in very few words, every word counting. It's a book to read slowly, and, if you are an old time New Yorker, it is all the sweeter.

I'd say this book was the story of my life exactly, but it's not the story of my life at all. It's honest without being a bore. It's funny without being a charade. It's brave without attitude. It's just what I want in a book. It's also just what I almost never find.

Here's a sample of the text. It's unfair, really to pull it out of the context of the story, but I wanted you to read it, hear it.

" I loved them all and they loved me and they made me grasp life, even if I could
not hold on to it. But I could never hold on to despair because of them. All People
of the Book who stepped out of history to hold me and embrace me and not let me
fall. Why have I been so lucky in this life, this Jew who came after the Holocaust--
the world had expended its Jew hatred for a while, having gotten it out of its system--
and seen such bountiful goodness, so much beauty, totally unsuitable beauty to make
literature out of because it is unbelievable--so incredible it would be pointless to try
to write a story about it."

David Evanier has written a story about it. A collection of stories. Terrific stories.

What a Gift!.......2007-03-20

...or so believes the narrator, Michael, when his psychiatrist bequeaths him the tapes of their therapy sessions--spanning 30 years! While the thought of revisiting the painful times of our lives may be horrifying to most, Michael embraces the opportunity and, "listening to the forgotten tapes, I measure what is real to me now against what was real to me then."

And that line illustrates, for me, what is one of the hands-down strengths of this fine book: on a sentence-to-sentence basis, this is poignant and heartfelt writing. The language is economical, unadorned and yet packed with emotion--nostalgia and loss and gratitude and the multitude of conflicting feelings that tangle around our memories.

Except this is not memory, simply. Because memory is colored by our experience and our perceptions as we age; memory is naturally distorted. Only so much distortion can take place, however, when we are confronted by our own voice revealing what happened and what we felt ten, twenty, thirty years ago.

The protagonist here takes on each character, each event from his past as if he were living it today. It is past tense and yet immediate. We are right there with Michael--in New York, in Vancouver, wherever--soaking up the scenery and facing each character from his life right along with him, albeit with the added wisdom of age.

Evanier's deft prose highlights the complexities and paradoxes universal in all human beings, but what's special here is that the characters are illuminated through Michael's changing perceptions. I'm thinking, for example, of the quite troubled wife, Karen, who at times seems his destruction and at other times his salvation.

There is so much to be admired in this slim book, one which ultimately feels like a love letter to all those who have peopled Michael's eventful life.

I hadn't read Evanier before...what a mistake that turns out to be!

David Evanier has been a writer all his life... He is the author of The One Star Jew, Red Love (a novelization of the life and times of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg) and dozens of stories, reviews and essays published in leading literary journals. He has also written for New York Magazine, The Village Voice, and The New York Times Magazine.
In addition to his literary work, David has also written several wonderful biographies, most prominent among them: Making The Wise Guys Weep--The Jimmy Roselli Story, and Roman Candle, The Life of Bobby Darin.

David calls The Great Kisser, a "novel in stories". And it is more or less just that. It's a collection of short and long stories, which don't always proceed in particularly chronological order but follow a different sort of time line--the time line of the heart.
This book is really a memoir, with only a few changes of name, place and date. It's at once the story of a boy, then a man, searching desperately for the kind of genuine love he never got as a child, and also the story of a born artist, a writer; someone, who no matter what other jobs or careers he ever attempted was never meant to be anything but a writer.
The stories move back and forth in time and place--but cover everything from his childhood in the forties and fifties up to the present moment... They travel from Queens to Manhattan, to Vancouver, back to Manhattan, out to Los Angeles (for a long, hard attempt at screenwriting) and finally back to New York.
The book is full of bizarre and fascinating characters; geniuses and charlatans; real and would-be gangsters; cracked literary agents, bigoted, hysterical do-gooders and a large assemblage of lost, crazy and inspired artists that Michael Goldberg (David's novelized namesake) meets on his journeys.
Of all the sad, brilliant and hilarious characters Michael encounters in his travels, by far the most fascinating is his long-time psychiatrist who, in his deranged old age, gives Michael decades of their taped therapy sessions. In fact, that's the way the book starts--with Michael beginning to listen to these thousand-and-one nights of analysis and personal revelation.
David/Michael, in this life story, writes with a kind of vicious, longing honesty about his horribly needy and destructive parents.
Not unlike a great many other people in this sad, spinning world, he spends the better part of his life trying to free himself from the chains of his parents' terrible love--it's an omnipresent plot, sub-plot and super-plot throughout the book...
Michael falls in love, in lust, chases after numerous women, engages in doomed affairs and, when teaching in Vancouver, meets the woman he will one day marry. Their long, troubled and passionate relationship is, in fact, what finally carries the torch of redemption to the finish line of the book.
The Great Kisser is compulsively readable. David/Michael's desperation leaps right from his heart to yours and you often find yourself saying, "I can't take this stuff any more-- But still, I have to know what happens next." There is always a feeling of compassion you have for this character. You find yourself, no matter how much he screws up or lurches around in a selfish frenzy, rooting for him to succeed, both in his attempts to make it as a writer and finally discover true love. His greatest virtue is that no matter what disasters befall him, he never, never stops trying.

A Very Important Book.......2004-04-26

At first glimpse, James Kochalka's work appears to be very simple: black and white line drawings framed haphazardly, with occasional bursts of dialogue. And yet, just below the surface lies some of the most intimate truths of life.

Kissers, Kochalka's first full-length semi-autobiographical graphic novel, is perhaps his most important work to date.

The storyline is, as per usual, very simple to follow: Spandy (Magic Boy's cat) falls in love with a small songbird. In the meantime, the elven "Magic Boy" James and Amy struggle through minor marital mishaps. And all the while, the reader is brought along on the whimsical-yet-heartbreaking tale of unrequited love, and misplaced attempts at romance.

Perhaps the strongest scene from the book occurs when the songbird, realizing for the first time what he has undertaken by falling for Spandy, cries out, "Why'd I have to fall in love with an indoor cat?"

A timely piece of work, Kissers deserves a place on every comic book lover's bookshelf.

James Kochalka's newest book, Kissers, is so cute it hurts. Childlike drawings with not always child like sentiments, Kochalka makes it ok to be cute, no matter what age or maturity level. This book is accompanied by a CD with some of James's cutest (i know, I used that word too much) love songs. "Have you ever been kissed by and idiot/Or wished that you could?/Well, I could be your idiot/And i kiss good." All hail James Kochalka Superstar!

For a man who spent most of his life in jail excelent writing. Is it fiction or faction?. Buried bodies, buried guns and buried money. Australia`s underworld at it`s best. The italian maffia can eat their heart out for the violence in this book. Sex, drugs and murder at it`s best.

Artist Raphael Soyer (1899-1987), whose Russian Jewish family settled in Manhattan in 1912, was devoted to painting people in their everyday urban lives. He came to be known especially for his representations of city workers and the down-and-out, and for his portraits of himself and his friends. Although Soyer never identified himself as a "Jewish artist," Samantha Baskind, in the first full-length critical study of the artist, argues that his work was greatly influenced by his ethnicity and by the Jewish American immigrant experience.

A wonderful read.......2005-01-08

What captivated me moreso than just the history of this artist was the style in which the author arranged and wrote this wonderful book. The points and details were laid out in a way that made the read enjoyable, almost like a novel, (It was upsetting whenever I had to put the book down), and I never felt talked down to even though the subject matter was new to me. I totally devoured this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in art, art history, immigration, diaspora or jewish studies, not to mention biographies. I would also recommend it to someone just searching for a good read! I look forward to other such works by Dr. Baskind.

Jewish art analyzed in depth.......2004-07-13

This book was recommended to me by a professor who felt that the text would clarify my questions about what Jewish art is. The book did that and more. The book carefully goes through the many possiblities of what Jewish art is, how it has been understood in the past, and what the author thinks. Before this book I felt that Jewish art could really only be defined as religious, but now I understand much more about the ethnic dimensions of Judaism. According to the author, the "cultural" aspects of Jewish art are just as worthy as the religious ones. She expains all this with examples and by testing her ideas on the art of Raphael Soyer. R. Soyer's art is really great, as is this book. I recommend it to anyone interested in American art, Jewish art, or Soyer.

Fascinating on several levels.......2004-04-09

I found this book fascinating, and I'm just as fascinated by the reactions to it, especially the angry diatribe.

The value of this book is that Soyer has been known as a Jewish artist, but no one has talked about him as such in real depth. I recommend this book for its:
1. Attention to biography. The author quotes and analyzes Soyer's 4 autobiographies, his personal papers, and oral interviews. She's probed these sources and found interesting material there.
2. Multidimensional use of history. One reviewer states that the author doesn't tell us anything about the historical context of Soyer's art. I disagree. She tells us much, it's just that it's not the same old American stuff wrapped around him. She provides an alternate historical perspective: the Jewish one alongside the national and artistic ones. I especially like her use of literary works, such as Elias Tobenkin and Abraham Cahan, to help explain the mindset of the time.
3. Attention to visual details. Her interpretations of the art, especially Soyer's illustrations discussed in the last chapter, is impressive.

The author uses the evidence the artist has left behind, both verbal and visual, to construct an interesting portrait of Soyer. I think those uncomfortable with that portrait are those who have been, for whatever reason, perpetuating a static view of Soyer (gender, race and religion matter!), or have ignored him altogether.

This new look at Soyer is just what's needed - and not just for art history, but religious studies, gender studies, and all those interested in difference.

extremely disappointing.......2004-04-07

I agree with the first reviewer that Soyer deserves more attention than he has received, but, unfortunately, this book is not the kind of attention he deserves.

Baskind tries to fit all of Soyer's work into her narrow interpretative frame. I did not find her arguments convincing. Her focus seems to be on "outing" Soyer as a Jew (not really necessary, since this is a well-known aspect of his identity, and nothing he ever tried to hide), rather than telling us anything new about his work or its historical context. In fact, I found myself not trusting the biographical information she does report because it all seems to be twisted around to support her predetermined arguments.

If you are interested in the question of "What is Jewish art?" you might enjoy this book, but if you are an admirer of Raphael Soyer, you probably won't.

Important book on Soyer and Jewish art.......2004-04-06

Samantha Baskind's Raphael Soyer and the Search for Modern Jewish Art describes the life and work of Raphael Soyer, a Russian immigrant who arrived in America in 1912 at the age of thirteen. The oldest of six children, Soyer, his twin brother Moses, and their younger brother Isaac became artists. All three of these talented siblings sit on the periphery of American art, and in this well-researched book Baskind shows why Soyer deserves more attention than he has previously received. Along with describing how Soyer's art was influenced by his Jewish identity, Baskind also critically examines "the assumptions and methodologies scholars employ when discussing Jewish art" (4). Her lucid prose, even when dealing with challenging thinkers (Freud, Simmel, and Jonathan and Daniel Boyarin, among others), makes Soyer and his Jewishness accessible.

Baskind begins her book by stating that Soyer "did not want to be known as a Jewish artist" (1), and then proceeds in the following five chapters to look closely at a single work or a group of related works by Soyer. She explains how Soyer was never a parochial painter - she does not connect his work to the religious elements of Judaism - but that the religiocultural dimensions of Judaism influenced his art. The first chapter, for example, examines a self-portrait from 1927. She tenaciously digs at the meanings in this portrait, and her attention to details, both visual and socio-political, is impressive as she shows how Soyer negotiated the challenges of being Jewish in the first decades of the twentieth century.

Baskind's discussion of past analyses of Soyer's well-known painting Dancing Lesson illustrates her accomplishment. This painting has been previously understood as Jewish, but, as Baskind explains, a close look at the work's iconography has never been performed. Baskind does this with panache and insight. Baskind carefully examines the painting, pulling out the "Jewish signs" (64) in Dancing Lesson, finally providing a paradigm for why this painting has fascinated so many as an example of Jewish art.

This book may be the impetus for others to take Soyer more seriously as an artist. Importantly, Baskind never attempts to claim Soyer. She only offers possible meanings - she mindfully phrases her interpretations with words like "seems," "may," and "perhaps," and states in her conclusion that "If this discussion of Soyer's professional self-definition opens up new perspectives on Soyer's art and incites scholars to reevaluate Soyer, then I have done my job" (196). She wants others to write and comment on Soyer; she does not pretend to be all-knowing and understands the limits of scholarship. Baskind also acknowledges that "Soyer cannot be understood adequately as [solely] a Jewish artist or an American artist" (196), thus opening up a hopefully new field of Soyer studies to interpretations from various perspectives.

The book culminates with Baskind's discussion of Soyer's book illustrations for Isaac Bashevis Singer. Her attention to Soyer's artistic precedents, especially the illustrations' uncanny resemblances to Marc Chagall's art and that of Jacob Epstein, is art history as it should be done. Beautifully written with an astonishing depth of understanding of twentieth-century American art and culture, Baskind's exceptional scholarship has enriched our understanding of Soyer and Jewish art.

My 83 year old mother-in-law loves this particular series of Large-Print Crosswords Challenges. She's quite sound of mind and been doing crosswords for years. The size makes them easy to do into the evening. The clues are good, not too revealing, and span alot of territory. There is consistancy between the volumes and that's important.

A pleased reader.......2006-02-05

As a student in college we get autocad as a course.
I dediced to buy this book in order to go further and deeper into the subject.
This book is huge in size! George Omura offers guidance step by step, explaining most details; (i was pleased with the guidance, had little difficulties understanding even the more advanced topics)

This book is ideal for those wishing to get acquainted to autocad to a fairly advanced level. It offers a very thorough overall knowledge of autocad, suitable to the novice who just started out, climbing up the ladder. The books is composed in a similar way, explaining the basics in the beginning and gradually covering the more advanced topics. Important to mention, is the well organised appearance of the book, containing indexed words, allowing the reader to quickly look up topics by key-words!

For those wishing to go all the way, they probably will need to buy an extra book for advanced items such as advanced customisation and 3D but i am sure Omura can teach even some of the experts out there, as he clearly knows his thing.

It might be fair to say that i was a bit dissapointed to find not more covered about the 3D aspects of Autocad, but i realised later that Omura wrote a seperate book dedicated to explaining autocad's 3D abibilites in detail, which is understandable, knowing that this book alone is over 1000 pages!

I give this book 5 stars, finding the previous 3 stars given, a wrong representation of an excellent book.

A not so deep book.......2005-08-27

The book doesn't go deep into customizing AutoCAD, but gives a complete brief overview for general purpose AutoCAD usage.
