Book Description
Death duties are now only a minor source of revenue to the British Exchequer (about 1.5 per cent of Inland Revenue receipts) and they now have few committed advocates.
Nevertheless they persist, mainly because of inertia
Dr. Bracewell-Milnes analyses the traditional criticism of death duties and adds some novel arguments based on the concept of saving in perpetuity - saving which is never drawn down, whether or not it was initially planned as perpetual. The perpetual saver is a public benefactor because he or she provides the rest of society with a permanent loan at rates chargable for loans with maturity dates. Taxing perpetual saving will reduce its supply, thus resulting in losses to the rest of society.
Inheritance tax does immense economic damage, according to Dr. Bracewell-Milnes, and should be abolished. It is 'perverse and counterproductive for its own ostensible purposes, egalitarian or otherwise'.

One crossover that should not have happened.......2006-10-17
When Bruce Wayne attends the opening of the new Wayne Wing of the Gotham City Museum of Natural History, he meets Lord Greystoke, Tarzan. And when he meets an African Princess, who goes about disguised as a cat, he begins to learn that the man acquiring artifacts for he Wayne Wing is an unscrupulous adventurer. So, Batman, Tarzan and Catwoman set off for Africa to stop the evil treasure hunter before he can do any more damage. But, will they be in time.
Overall, I thought that this book did a good job of capturing the true characters of both Batman and Tarzan. Both characters operated as you would expect, fighting the evils that infect their respective jungles and doing what it takes to set things right. The illustration work is well done, but always darkly colored, no matter what setting.
My real problem with this book is the simple problem of settings. Tarzan's presence on the rooftops of Gotham is never explained (don't even get me started on the rooftop Masai warriors!), and Batman seemed so terribly out of place in the jungles of Africa.
No. Sometimes crossovers are great, providing some interesting moments, and chances for expanding existing character. But, this is one crossover that should not have happened. Overall, I do not recommend this book.
Classic Serial Material.......2001-03-17
I have to admit, I was a little hesitant to buy this. As a fan of Edgar Rice's Tarzan novels, and NOT the silly movies that have come out over the years, I was all too ready to have Tarzan be a stupid ape and not the intelligent, if slightly-uncivilized, British Tarzan of the novels. However, kudos to Ron Marz for getting it right. There are some classic lines in this series, and both Batman and Tarzan get their share of the spotlight. Using a 50's Batman model and Burroughs' Tarzan proved a great decision and makes for a campy read reminiscent of old serial shows. In my opinion, this is a must-get for Tarzan or Batman fans.
More For the Tarzan fans than Batman.......2000-10-30
I've been a Batman fan for a while, espceially interms of Catwoman. When I heard about this title, I thought I would pick it up, but ended up being somewhat disappointed. The tone of the story seemed to fit more with Tarzan, which I have never read, and the "Catwoman" in the story was not Selina Kyle, but the princess of an African tribe. Still, the artwork style is interesting and the story fairly fast paced. Not a horrible read, but not what I was expecting.

Customer Reviews:
The First Volume of Stray Bullets.......2006-01-31
The first volume of Stray Bullets collects issues 1-7 of the series, and I was surprised by how good this book was. The start of this volume hooks you to the story, and one learns more about the characters through an ever changing time frame in this volume. The volume starts in 1997, and the second story takes place in 1977. I certainly would recommend this series, and I am personally going to continue to the read the books.
another excellent volume.......2005-03-05
The Collected Stray Bullets, Volume 8 is another excellent book in this crime comic series by David Lapham. As always, the art and the writing are top notch. Volume 8 actually improves a bit over the past couple of volumes, as the stories had been getting a little convoluted and meandering. In this book, several of the issues and conflicts raised in previous volumes are resolved. In particular, the story of Virginia Applejack is brought full circle to where it first began in Volume 1. There are also appearances by Beth, Monster, Bobby, and Roger (the cop). If you have been reading and enjoying these books all along, you will certainly appreciate this addition to your collection.
A few caveats. This book is not the place to start! If you are new to Stray Bullets, you should go back to Volume 1 and read them in order. OK, this is not absolutely essential, because the stories do pop back and forth across time, but it will deepen your experience of this volume. Another caveat is that the book is a bit dark and gruesome. This series is not for kids. Finally, of the four stories, I'd have to say that the last installment was a bit weak. It's interesting enough, but it introduces some new characters and doesn't fit well after all of the plot resolution in the previous stories. That's a minor quibble though. Overall, this is a very good read.
Superb.......2003-03-29
"The Collected Stray Bullets" is among the finest noir I've ever seen or read, and I've seen and read quite a lot.
Flawless Noir Tales- Cool Beans........2003-02-24
I don't remember why I initially picked up my first issue of Stray Bullets, I'm just incredibly happy that I did. Except for my frantic, nervous search for every new issue that comes out, this book is a pure joy. Filled With incredibly real and fleshed out characters, who may not all be too likable, but who can all grab my attention without losing it for a second. Weaving between times and setting, between reality and fantasy this book is crafted absolutely flawlessly, and is among the greatest Crime-Noir books that have been made.

Book Description
Dying the Good Death is a unique ethnography, the first to focus on the experiences of dying at the end of the life cycle. In a region of northern India, some people at the end of their lives leave their villages and travel to the Hindu holy city of Kashi to die. These pilgrims expect that by dying in Kashi they will obtain the spiritual reward of moksha--liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth.
Based on fieldwork conducted in Kashi's hospices or "mansions of liberation," Christopher Justice introduces us to a number of dying individuals and their families, providing rich and evocative descriptions of their remarkable experiences. The social contexts of these experiences are explored through descriptions of the families who provide care and the priests who chant the name of God twenty-four hours a day. The book also has clear implications for the potential ways in which we may choose to face the ends of our lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, but not for universal interest.......2006-07-31
Since this book is a discussion of the death rituals and practices among the bhavans within Varanasi, India, interest in this book will only come from a select reader. For my own research purposes, this book was fantastic. In researching the death rituals of contemporary Hindus in Varanasi, one of the holiest cities connected to Hinduism, Justice's work provided a great deal of information and detail about that very subject. If you are looking for a general interest book in Hinduism, this book is not for you. If you are researching Hinduism in India, you might check out this book and also look at Justice's bibliography. Justice's book is among the few that deal directly with death in Varanasi, along side classic authors like Gold and Parry.

Still the Best Book on the Laws of Magick Theory & Games.......2006-12-30
This 1979 paperback manual is still highly regarded by gamers who practise magick theory and magick role-playing.This book has alot of Isaac's opinions openly expressed. This is Isaac's Book of Magick Playing, and not a standard generic rip-off.There are many acrinyms used to save space and help the reading flow.I wanted to withhold one star, because it has not been currently updated or expanded upon.Yet,i enjoyed Isaac Bonewits' fantasy game system he created. It's his own unique one that does add insight for other budding magickians. This magickal book is still very good.It inspires the reader to seek their own magick system to suit one's desire for personal satisfaction through the use of Magick-crafting.So,Use the Force!
A valuable addition to any gamer's library.......2004-02-25
If you've ever wondered about the theory behind the magic systems used in your favorite RPG, this gem will surely enlighten you. Bonewits talks about the origins of the magic systems used in various games, shows how they are different from "real world" magic theories, and presents alternative approaches that will make your favorite game even more exciting. While he's obviously not a gamer himself, he gives those of us who are plenty of tools to modify our current games or create new ones. This requires work and imagination, but anything worthwhile does.
Every magician needs a copy - For gamers, it's a resource,.......2003-10-07
If written today, this would be a simulation program - and it desperately needs one, ideally written to run on a Palm.
As a workable simulation system for role-playing, it just sucks; it's far too complex. It's far more accurate than any comparable system, but if you play it, all you will be playing IS magic.
As a workable simulation system to explain the process of magic in non-mystical terms, it is truly unique, and near as I can tell, accurate within the bounds of experimental error.
So as a means of developing a workable "spell list" for a campaign or a character, to then be expressed in other terms - magnificent. Likewise, it's great for designing effective rituals. (Um. This might be a "danger, will robinson, danger" moment for gamers - as it IS great for designing effective rituals.)
Authentic Thaumaturgy begs to be revisited and turned into a true gaming engine. It also begs to be revisited and turned into a resource aimed at truly pragmatic real-world spell design.
But until that's done, it's a great resource book, and the ideas it contains aren't easily found in any other single place.
BTW, I considered Bonewitz's uncensored opinions about nearly everyone under the sun to be hilarious, even when they annoyed me.
Isaac; "A spell is a THING, not a process!"
Don't confuse the spell with the ritual that produces it.
RITUALISTS! [snort]
Skip it.......2003-08-02
The idea behind this book is interesting, to make a generic magic system based on real world magical beliefs. Boneswits failed miserably.
Bonewits spends most of his pages explaining how anyone who doesn't agree with him is either a fool or a liar. When he does get to game rules, they are too complex. Literally dozens of stats must be calculated, many of them vary from spell to spell and casting to casting. Furthermore, these stats are indexed and crossed referenced poorly or not at all.
Nice, fun, very opinionated.......2001-03-22
Does this let you do real magic? No. At least, I hope not...
What, then, is this for?
This is written as a guide by a self-styled Real World Magician on how to translate the magic he knows of into gaming terms. Bearing in mind this is his perspective, and that what is "real" is not necessarily the best thing, this is actually a useful book.
He basically goes into magical laws (of which Murphy's has been included), the relationship between magic and psionics (see The Psionics Handbook for D&D3 for a similar view), cultural references, and, finally, a rump magic system that's very calculation-intensive.
Is this for everyone? No. Mr. Bonewits has some very, ah, strong opinions that some might find irritating, offensive, or otherwise bad. It also might not be useful to everybody, given that I know very few people who actually make up their own systems. I bought it, but am not going to ever use it for anything other than reading material. However, I am glad that I bought it. You may want to do some quick perusing in the store first, though.

OK but dated.......2007-06-22
It's my own fault, but I failed to notice that this book was published in 2004. I'm sure it was excellent then, but today, much of the info contained in the book is dated, many of the websites mentioned no longer exist, and the ipod technology of today (2007) has rendered much of the interesting stuff that can't be found elsewhere obsolete. If Mr. Knaster should release a second, more current edition, I'd buy it.
Thanks.......2006-06-22
Have just gotten the book. Saved time and it helped restore my library. Has some cool items. In 30 minutes time have gotten a better understanding of my Ipod and Itunes. Looking forward to finishing the book to learn more. Thanks
Not hacking or insightful........2005-05-03
I will agree with others that none of the contents of this book are very interesting. All of the information can be found by applying 1) Common sense, 2) reading the product instructions, 3) doing a bit of research on your own online.
Its also not about hacking. To the 'dim bulb' that suggests one is foolish for complaining about that mis-use of the term, just because this is a book in a series: sorry, but your wrong. The term 'hacking' has a specific meaning in technology circles. You don't get to redefine it at a whim or misuse it and expect folks to say, "ok, sure, fine". Hacking is about finding those functions, features, information on a system that are not available in plain sight or documented in the product manuals.
Using the given functionality of something to some interesting purposes is not a hack. Its a use, to be sure. A hack has to be something thats not intended to be known by the maker, or similar. Getting at a hidden service menu - that, is a hack.
Using aluminum foil on a TV antenna is NOT a hack- its a fix. You may be a hack for using it to fix the antenna, but thats another issue. Now if you can use aluminum foil to decypher your old analog HBO feed - that, would be a hack (an admittedly illegal variety of hack, but still a hack).
If the series of books is misusing the term 'hacking' then they are being repeatedly incorrect and misleading people. Calling this a book on hacking is wrong, and the fact that its a series will not make it right.
Save your money and follow your own curiosity over the internet.
If you find this sort of fluff really that usefull and believe this is justifiably using the term 'hacking', then be all means, spend the cash, but don't expect tech savy folks not to giggle and point at you when you proclaim you are using a hack from this book.
Hacking in the sense that bubblegum is food.......2005-04-22
As the reviewer below suggests, this isn't a book so much about how to find cool new features/things to do with your Ipod as it is an instruction manual similar to what should have been supplied with the device to begin with. Most of the info either is available online or somewhat obvious, given the intuitiveness/limitations of the Itunes software and the UI of the device itself.
As much as I was hoping otherwise, this book isn't worth the money. Not even particularly for anyone uncomfortable with technology.
...If you really want to improve how your Ipod operates, check out Anapod Explorer, and spend the money there that you would have spent on this.
the cool reality of your ipod.......2005-02-10
scott "special k" knaster is old skool apple, with no less than seven mac books you can buy on amazon right now (and another coming) ... he's so entrenched in the apple psyche and culture that he's almost certainly forgotten more about apple and the mac than any "normal" citizen has ever known ... in short, he's *exactly* who you want acting as your digital tour guide.
reading h.i.a.i. is like having your favorite brother sit down and show you everything your ipod can do. all the in's and out's of the super-cool digital music world are laid out in an easy to read, logical and fun fashion.
no matter how much you like your ipod, you'll like it better after spending a little time with special k.
and these other reviews? some of them just bust me up:
"you can find all this stuff online"
- uh, sure. you can find the whole frickin' world online. is all the stuff in the book online? i honestly don't know. do *i* want to go looking for it all? hell no. that's what a book is *for*. my time, and the permanence of having something on my self, is worth 20 bucks. a library must be a huge disappointment to that reviewer.
"he calls these 'hacks?'"
- it's the name of the series, dim bulb. when you write a book in a series, it gets that title. i wrote "winning at internet poker for dummies," but it doesn't mean you *have* to be a dummy to buy it. if you buy a book like h.i.a.i. and expect to get a "hack" along the lines of learning how launch nuclear missiles with your ipod, you're going to be let down by default.
thanks for reading.
