It's The End of the World as She Knows It, And We Feel Fine.......2006-09-05
Strange Girl starts out looking like it will be about the life of a young girl who is the black sheep of her very religious family. Young Bethany Black does not have the faith that her parents and brother have, and it seems that this series will look at how life can be for someone who doesn't believe when they are forced to have faith. Wrong. After about 4 pages, the rapture occurs, and Bethany's family, along with anyone else who is "righteous", ascend to Heaven leaving Bethany and the other undeserving people behind. God then declares that he is no longer offering Earth his protection, which allows Satan and his demons to rise from the Earth and take over.
Ten years later, Beth is grown up and is a slave of the demon Lord Belial. She has won the demon over due to the fact that she has taught herself magic, and can use protect spells (among others) to keep herself safe in a world full of viscious demons. Although she has a much better life than many humans, most of whom were either killed during the first days after the rapture or are now used as sex slaves, Beth's life is hardly ideal. She works in one of Belial's bars in San Francisco alongside Bloato, a demon who is loyal to her for unknown reasons. When Bloato tells Bethany that there is one gate left on Earth that can get her to Heaven, the pair escape to try to get to Vatican City in order to save themselves.
Strange Girl is characterized by intense action scenes as well as moments of philisophical thought about religion. The book can go from over-the-top action to intelligent conversation pretty quickly. The characters are also well-written and developed; Beth didn't get into Heaven not because she's a bad person, but because she has no faith. She loves her family, but they still were difficult to live with. Bloato's speech pattern and attitude are very amusing, and Belial's role of a bizarre father figure is an interesting twist on the idea of demons.
This book will probably be a little offensive to many people, but it is still worth taking a look at. It's an interesting look at the people who aren't righteous, and is hilarious as well.

One Flew over the Onion Dome: American Orthodox Converts, Retreads & Reverts.......2007-08-31
A really true and complete explanation of what happens to people who convert to Orthodox Christianity. Fr. Huneycutt explains how his own faith journey goes from Baptist to Anglican (Episcopalian) to Orthodox and the problems and rewards he experienced and witnesses about others' experience in going from "mainline Christianity" to an ancient and mystical faith. I'm certain that these experiences are similar in going to AA, NA, (as I myself have done) and other 12 step programs where a change of life, open-mindedness, humility and acceptance of others are required. He also shows how Orthodoxy is not, and never has been, the opposite sides of the same coin that Catholicism and Protestantism share.
One of a Kind.......2007-06-15
You know the expression, misery loves company. Well, it's not just misery...it is human nature to want to share a common experience. Being a convert to Orthodoxy in the United States in many situations can be a very lonely journey. Without other convert examples around us or sharing the journey it can be like fumbling in the dark. Father Joseph Huneycutt's premier book, One Flew Over the Onion Dome, offers a comprehensive assessment of this frequently overlooked aspect of Orthodoxy...the convert experience. The book is not a book on Orthodox theology. It is not the book to read if a potential convert to Orthodoxy is looking for an in depth instruction on Divine essence and energies (although it is replete with Orthodox definitions, explanations and references). Rather, the book shines a light on the things converts to Orthodoxy should know about themselves and those things cradles should know about converts. And because this book is an honest assessment of "ourselves" the picture isn't always pretty. We have to take the good with the bad. Father Joseph reminds us that the convert brings much good to the Church--our knowledge of the Scriptures, our practice in tithing and our zeal for the faith. But also makes us aware of the pitfalls for the convert--"convertitis", "troglodoxy" and "the 2 year itch", to name a few. Some converts might take offense with what is written. No one is happy to admit a bout of convertitis, no matter how short the duration and minimized the manifestation. It's embarrassing. But it can be a very real part of the conversion process. Besides...we could all do with a little more humility, no? This book seems to be one of a kind. It offers tremendous insight into the experience of conversion to Orthodoxy in the US. Potential converts and converts need to read it so they can recognize their strengths and be aware of common pitfalls. Cradles need to read it to not only to understand the convert and to be able to embrace him, warts and all, but to help him through the difficult times as well. My presbytera, a cradle, said the book was an eye opener and it gave her a greater appreciation for the true struggle of a Western convert to Orthodoxy. This little book goes far in helping to open the eyes of both convert and cradle Orthodox alike as we strive to "commend ourselves to one another and all our whole life unto Christ our God."
Good intentioned but disappointing.......2007-06-02
Author Huneycutt comes across as a likeable guy, and I'm sure he's a good priest. But I found the style of his prose--fake colloquial, downhome falsetto--condescending and irritating. (Example: "Culture is like opinions and belly-buttons: Everybody's got one." [83]) I could've gone beyond this, though, had the book been an informative guide for a non-Orthodox seeking insight into Orthodoxy. But it really isn't. It's difficult to figure out what the book aims to do, or who the intended audience is. At times it reads like a sociological analysis of the types of people who convert to Orthodoxy. At other times, it reads like a pep talk for recent converts who have become ambivalent or disheartened. But so far as talking about Orthodoxy itself goes, the book is minimalistic. Much better guides remain Kallistos Ware or Anthony Bloom.
An Excellent read ... for Orthodox and those intereste.......2007-05-07
After a lengthy journey, my wife and I left our previous church, where I had been a pastor for over three decades, and were received into Orthodoxy. Recently we read Fr. Joseph's book from cover to cover while traveling. We thoroughly enjoyed every word. He writes in a very readable and understandable style, speaking honestly and forthrightly, but never does he diminish the ancient faith or suggest that somehow it should be modified or changed.
People are people! In spite of many differences and the things that take place, we rejoice that we are bound together in Christ's Church! Thank you, Father Joseph!

Winsome, Wise, and Wonderful.......2007-05-04
One Flew Over The Onion Dome is a wise and winsome guide to what it's like to be an American Orthodox convert, retread, and revert--and I dare say, there's an pervert or two in the mix. With his trademark humor and candor, Fr. Huneycutt takes us on a journey that offers reassurance to us converts feeling a little spiritually retarded. I found so much of myself--past, present, and God help me, most likely future in these pages. He averted a lot of spiritual disasters for me through this book, and did so with great compassion. The slim volume also gives insight to cradle Orthodox who may be bewildered by our zeal. It also gave me insight on what it's like for them to see me. This book brought great joy and comfort to me. I look forward to reading more of Fr. Huneycutt in the future.
Book Description
Retreads tells the middle of the story begun in
Thundering Sneakers and concluded in
Sneaking Out. In this collection of essays, Prudence Mackintosh follows her sons through the "tween" years between little boyhood and adolescence. Vividly portraying the chaos that descends on a house full of active children, she also records the many first times and last times that give poignancy to the middle years of motherhood.

Mothers of Boys -- Share in the Joy.......2002-12-08
From the moment I discovered Prudence Mackintosh in Thundering Sneakers (first of the trilogy), I fell in love with her style of writing. She shares the joys of boys along with her own cherishing of the moments of parenting them. Retreads will make you laugh until you cry as you share her wonderful observations of her own 3 boys in those "tween years" where they are too big to hold and way too big to ignore. If you know a mother of all boys, I cannot think of a better gift -- the Mackintosh Trilogy (Sneaking Out is new in 2002 -- and helps to finish the chapter of raising children!) UT Press has done us all a favor by reissuing these gems! Thanks Prudence!

Read Prudence McIntosh! If you have boys you must read this book. One of my favorites.

The Korean Air War was intense and deadly. The F-86 Sabrejets fighting their high altitude battles against the MiG 15s were the prima donnas. The F-84 Thunderjets were the groundhogs, wallowing around in the Korean mud to give interdiction and tactical support in the dirty ground war. Retread Squadron tells their story.

The Retreads is a story of U.S. Marine Corps veterans of World War II who enlisted in the Marine Corps Volunteer Reserve Force. Five years later they would be recalled for duty in a cold war police action which developed into the United Nations Korean War.
Customer Reviews:
Unlike Firestone, Retreads works!.......2000-09-09
This is a great book that lets those of us who did not live through this period of time, experience what it was like to be a part of a "forgotten war". How difficult it must have been to pull up established roots, leaving friends, family and successful occupations behind. The Korean War with its "retreads" was in ways unlike any other conflict in history because of its use of seasoned veterans that had rejoined civilian life. I did find myself comparing Sgt Mason's experiences to experiences found from the Vietnam War. The fact that the war was unpopular and the folks back home ostracized him and his participation in the war in ways the same as Vietnam protesters did, was a little surprising to me. This book needs to be read, espcially during this 50th anniversary of the Korean War, to either refresh those memories or allow the reader to understand what it was like to be there. Semper Fi, Sgt. Mason!

Book Description
Media critics remain captivated by the modernist myth of the new: they assume that digital technologies such as the World Wide Web, virtual reality, and computer graphics must divorce themselves from earlier media for a new set of aesthetic and cultural principles. In this richly illustrated study, Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin offer a theory of mediation for our digital age that challenges this assumption. They argue that new visual media achieve their cultural significance precisely by paying homage to, rivaling, and refashioning such earlier media as perspective painting, photography, film, and television. They call this process of refashioning "remediation," and they note that earlier media have also refashioned one another: photography remediated painting, film remediated stage production and photography, and television remediated film, vaudeville, and radio.

Remediation.......2006-07-13
Not well organized, arbitrary, puffed up, dense. If writing well is writing simply and clearly, this writing gets a D. The book is fraught with tautologies and contradictions not to mention simply not matching reality. It reminds me of the products of academic careerism at their worst.
This book will change the way you watch CNN.......2001-08-17
In Remediation, Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin analyze new technologies and their implications for American society. Although the book emphasizes the ways in which new media can be conceived in terms of recent literary and cultural theory, the theoretical discussions do not pervade the work. Therefore, the book can still be quite useful to those who don't wish to delve too deeply into theory. In fact, Bolter and Grusin acknowledge the different emphases of the book's chapters in their introduction and offer readers a guide to help them make the most of their experience with the book, with respect to the readers' goals. The three sections of the book discuss the authors' theory of remediation, the place of new media in American society, and the place of the Self within the context of new media.
In the first section of the book, Bolter and Grusin offer the notion of "remediation" as a way of thinking about new media. What they term "remediation" is "the formal logic by which new media technologies refashion prior media forms" (273). Bolter and Grusin attempt to contextualize their theories about new media within the framework of modern preoccupations with what they term "immediacy" and "hypermediacy." The desire for immediacy is a desire for a transparency in media that obliterates or lessens the perception of the media themselves in the viewer's mind. The reality of hypermediacy is the preoccupation with media itself and a hyper-awareness of the media through which our information comes. Bolter and Grusin place the logic of remediation within the context of our historical preoccupation with these trends. The new media discussed are primarily the visual: computer games, digital photography, photorealistic graphics, digital art, film, Virtual Reality, mediated spaces, television, and the World Wide Web. Discussing each of these media in great detail, the authors devote the second section of the book to demonstrating the way that the idea of remediation plays itself out in each. Bolter and Grusin examine how each new medium refashions older media and how they are often refashioned themselves. For example, they show that animated computer graphics draw upon the tradition of film and that film is now starting to draw upon the new offerings of computer graphics. They cite as their evidence a film such as Toy Story. Another example they point out is the remediation that occurs between television and the Internet. The Internet uses patterns established by television in order to determine how to appeal to viewers, and television uses new strategies of windowing images with the scrolling tickertapes and texts it has borrowed from Internet styles. Within the remediations that both new and old media undergo, Bolter and Grusin demonstrate how the twin desires for immediacy and hypermediacy are at work.
The final section on the Self attempts to discuss how the presence of the new media in our society affects individuals' perceptions of their own identities. By allowing people to engage in different discourse communities with different levels of immediacy and hypermediacy, the new media allow for a remediation of the notion of self and community. Bolter and Grusin specifically point to the immediacy of Virtual Reality as a starting point for empathy with other people and beings. If a person can use Virtual Reality to play the role of a gorilla, that person gains a new concept of his or her identity with respect to his or her experience as set apart from that of a gorilla. Bolter and Grusin also examine in detail whether the new media have implications for the mind-body split that is central to the theory of Cartesian dualism. Some argue that technologies such as Virtual Reality emphasize the split by creating a disembodied environment for the mind to inhabit. Bolter and Grusin, however, ultimately claim that such technologies cannot allow people to escape the perception of their own bodies. In fact, by allowing for new ways to conceive of the body and the mind, new media allow for a remediation of the body that is parallel to the remediation of the Self.
Overall this book offers interesting theories about the way technology functions in our society. It is, therefore, a good starting point for anyone who wants to consider the implications of using this technology and thereby becoming complicit in the culture's striving for immediacy and hypermediacy in our interactions with technology. Those implications would continue further for us as we remediate our old styles of teaching or otherwise interacting with technology to suit the newer forms that will inevitably appear.
Of course, to be concerned about how your use of technology fits into this framework, you must first be convinced by Bolter's and Grusin's arguments that remediation is a force at work in our society. Personally, I find their arguments convincing in their simplicity of structure and in their wealth of evidence. Although the discussions of Lacanian, Freudian, feminist, Marxist, and other theoretical approaches can be at times heavy-handed, underneath there is an insightful commentary on the way technology functions in our society.
Remediating without knowing it!.......2001-04-14
This book was most enligthening, it explained in a very structured form, what it is we were doing when creating content for new medias. As Moliere said, "doing prose without knowing it", I have used my newly acquired epistemology of remediation extensively to better explain to our young designers what it is they were doing when "re-mediating" clients'content for a new media application, be it Web, Multimedia apps or art-tech.The authors are themselves professors/researchers an use a very didactical stream of thoughts which has been exceedingly usefull to me, to better convey concepts for which I had a feeling, but nowhere near the "theory of remediation" that the authors convey.
As an art/tech buff, who happens to earn a living with technical content remediation and hard core applications programming, the book reconciled me with a new perpesctive on the similarities between these activities. Grusin and Bolter are challenging us to excellence in remediation whatever the final purpose.
The most important concept that the authors brought to me, was that more and better remediation has often nothing to do with more technology, and much more to do with better and more effective (or intelligent) ways to communicate.
In my view this book is a must reading, and a reference book for anyone producing content with a certain degree of awareness. If you believe that the new media demand a "different" attitude, this is a textbook for you.

Not a very up to date pokedex.......2005-06-06
This is not a very good pokedex to get over 2 stars. There is alot of informatation missing...especially if you are buying this book for breeding pokemon and finding pokemon. For instance it says you can't breed Ho-Oh (which you can't) but there are moves under the breedable moves list. Also it says you can catch GLIGAR in Pokemon Gold AND SILVER (you can NOT catch GLIGAR in the SIlVER version) on route 45. This pokedex is definetly NOT worth becoming dependant on if you are looking for acurate information.
It is good.......2003-05-19
The book is really informative and everything but it doesn't have some things the blue and other ones had. Such as the animal type (cat or mouse etc.) I mean some of the new ones are pretty crazy looking. It shows you all the moves your dudes will learn and it has charts to show you the different moves there are and what they do and where you can find them.
Over all it is a good pokedex
Buy "Pokemon Master Pokedex" instead.......2002-05-27
If you are looking for a complete, easy-to-follow, well-organized Pokedex, buy "Pokemon Master Pokedex: Prima's Official Strategy Guide" instead. Prima's "Pokemon Master Pokedex" (which covers ALL Pokemon) and the "Pokemon Gold & Silver" Strategy Guide are much more complete and user-friendly than this "Gold & Silver" Pokedex (limited to just the new Pokemon), which, like Prima's "Pokemon Yellow" Strategy Guide, is visually eye-catching, but less complete and harder to follow than the other titles mentioned above. (Another reviewer writes that there is no map. Remember: this is a Pokedex, not a Strategy Guide that will take you step-by-step through the game.)
A must-have for Pokemon fans!.......2002-03-24
My six year old son, Lukas, and four year old daughter, Josie, LOVE this book. They spend hours leafing through this book honing their expertise of Pokemon. They are not really into the Gameboy so much; they prefer looking at the pictures and reading up on the characters. Lukas, Josie and I go through the book and play many creative games. We pick our favorite Pokemon on each page; we take a tape measure and figure out the Pokemons heights; we list all the Pokemons that are our height, ETC.! It has also expanded my children's vocabulary to include such words as "psychic", "hypnotize", "gust", "leer" and many more!
Not everything I wanted.......2002-01-31
It had the new pokemon but it did cover all of the new moves. Also it doesn't show how to get around. It shows a map of the world but not very well. Not great insturtions

great textbook for new and experienced users of Excel.......2007-02-14
Thsi book is great!, I'm taking an Excel class this semester at college and needed the book. Great price and easy to understand for new and old users of Excel.
Used it in college course - EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2007-01-10
I'm taking Excel Spreadsheets in college this quarter. The book is clear, and easy to understand (even for those unfamiliar with using a computer, in my opinion).
One of the best parts is the great visual aids. Each tutorial gives color pictures of what you should be seeing on the screen of your computer while you work the tutorial. Sections within the chapter are also very well color organized and bolded for easy skimming if you are not new to the material.
Our teacher says that the book gets really advanced the farther on you read. Our basics & intermediate class only goes halfway through the book. The advanced excel class reads the second half, which teaches material on the level required by Microsoft in order to receive Microsoft Office Certification on the "expert" level.
On another note, Excel is an invaluable tool for personal use and in the work world.

Book was in horrible condition........2006-02-15
The item description said the book was in "pretty good" condition. When i received it three and a half weeks later it was badly water damaged and almost every page was ripped.
Needs Buffing.......2005-12-25
My comments apply both to EXCEL and ACCESS textbook since they follow the exact same style:
1.
Since the heavy text is closely used near a PC, what is needed is some type of new binding, where the specific tutorial a student is working on, can be removed from the main book's binding and when finished it can be returned to the its original spot.
2.
Often the yellow places, where the authors discuss specific intructions or procedure to accomplish a given task, the authors get carried away with adding extra discussions and "warnings" etc that a student forgets what is being discussed at hand.
3.
Most dialog boxes should be in quotes since the authors mention these dialog boxes as if the student already knows of their existence. If placed in quotes, then it alerts the reader to look out for a specif dialog box when they finally do appear on the screen.
4.
Also the authors write in a sort of condensed style by essentially "compressing" two steps into one, such as for typical example:
"Open table Member in the Case 2/Brief folder."
Instead, they should say:
"Open Case 2/Brief folders."
Then
"Open Member Table."
The above authors' writing style chosen by these authors assumes already that the first time student understands right away what is being asked of them to do.
The entier book seems to be written in this style !
5.
The Case studies seem to be error free and have enough hints to help student finish assignments -- which are critical to getting through these books.
6.
All major subsections should begin atop a new page !
Again readers get the feeling they are trying to CRAM as much as possible on one page.
All is now left to do is to go over the entire books and buff out the stuff that makes them foggy.
Apparently the authors have been making constant changes since the original texts first started with in 2000 series and they did finally change some of the more complicated tutorial examples and gray background, but now they must keep buffing these books and make them easier to carry to a PC desk area which is often cramped.

This is the most well written software learning guide I have ever seen. The structure is logical and easy to follow. The graphics are incredible. Imagine the most well written textbook you have ever read. That's what this book is like. This isn't a how-to book, it's a complete course.
