A unique window into a creative mind.......2004-04-08

Michel Gagné's "Parables: an anthology" is a collection of his first four masterpieces. Michel began as an animator and is well known in the industry. He began publishing his books which really showcased his incredibly unique artistic style and his purest stories. I would loosely describe his work as a cross between Tim Burton and Dr. Seuss. It's as close as I can get, but it is still an unfair comparison due to his stylistic personality that is truly unique.

In Parables, you're treated to his first four books. Each one is unique and holds simple yet meaningful morals.

The first book, "A Search for Meaning: The Story of Rex" follows a cute little fox in his search for meaning. He searches and searches and basically finds himself in an adventure realizing that meaning is something he just has to learn throughout his life.

The second book, "The Mystery of He" follows a young creature through his search of acceptance in the world he lives in. The creature finds upon birth that he is unique. In his searches, he finds a group of animals that are similar enough to himself for him to live with, but they persecute him for his differences. This story is about acceptance in a society and making a group appreciate you for who you are and not what you look like.

The third book, "The Great Shadow Migration" is a story of balance, fear, and bravery, in a world that's new in the universe.

Finally, the last book, "The Bird, The Spider and The Octopus" has three stories. The themes are a bit open to interpretation, but the overall idea seems to show what may happen if one lets greed get the best of them.

I would highly suggest this read to anyone who appreciates creativity. I've had a huge amount of success introducing people to his style, and his books are always good conversation pieces. After reading the book, I'm sure that you would also become a follower of his work. I find all his projects fun and meaningful and am sure you will too given the chance.

One of the best collections of parables available........1998-10-28

Not only are the stories exceptionally well-chosen. but there is a very perceptive introductory essay title "Kafka and the Modern Parables." I use his essay in a storytelling apprenticeship program, and encourage my students to orally learn some of these stories for the telling. I encourage you to do the same. The stories are powerful, the essay is insightful, and Schwartz judgment in selecting 100 parables is superb.

Shlomo was a very controversial person. See my comment under my handle "richardmgreen" at the above mentioned website.
I find these stories hard to take literally and I'm wondering if Shlomo believed in them literally. I don't and I always wondered what he believed and why he told these stories.

The highest of the highest .......2004-10-29

Shlomo was also a great storyteller. His stories inspire and strengthen the faith of the listener. No matter what it is he always manages to infuse it with his own special feeling and spirit his own love of people. Now that he is gone these stories too like his music his niggunim his many students of which the highest of the highest in my opinion was his holy joker Dovid Hertzberg continue to warm the hearts of the Yidden and bring them closer to Hashem.

A soaring, enlightening, good-feeling taste of Shlomo!.......1999-08-13

My mother gave me this book my first year in college when i was homesick. Now, even as a senior, i read myself a story before bed. The tradition of hasidic story telling which Carlebach continues and the enthusiasm and warmth with which he does so is inspiring and good for the spirit. This is a book i read to myself, my friends, my love, and will read to my children. This book is a great way to bring Jewish themes into your home and experiencing life the way the hasidic masters once did. They deal with aspects of life and love such as poverty, marriage, heaven, the Sabbath, integrity, honesty and more. Bring your soul to a higher place. L'Chaim!

A LONG, FASCINATING LIFE.......2003-12-20

One of the things I particularly liked about Jablonski's biography of Berlin is that it didn't just talk about his successes, but also discussed his failures, and his lifelong insecurities. It would seem that Berlin could never rest on his laurels, but had a strong need to heap on success after success. America's musical heritage is much the greater for this trait.

This same trait, however, was the cause of depression for Berlin whenever one of his musicals was panned by the critics, and several of them were. I should add, however, that he had a great many more successes than failures.

Musically, his career spanned a period lasting from 1907 when he wrote the lyrics to "Marie, from Sunny Italy," until 1966 when he wrote "An Old Fashioned Wedding."

The song that really brought him fame was "Alexander's Ragtime Band," first sung in 1911 by a then famous vaudeville star, Emma Carus. This was the beginning of a long history of popular hit songs and musicals.

Some of his songs that have become a permanent part of the American musical repertoire are: "White Christmas," "Easter Parade," and, of course, Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America." Interestingly, "God Bless America" had been a sort of throw-away song when it was written, not being sung at the time. Many years after it was written, when Kate Smith needed a patriotic song in the World War II years, Berlin pulled it out of "the bottom of the trunk," so to speak. There are many more Berlin songs with which we are all familiar, but the three just mentioned are adequate examples.

Berlin's life went from that of a preteen runaway who survived by selling newspapers on a street corner, to that of a bar room entertainer, to a music hustler, to a song writer, to a musical show writer and theater owner, to, in his last years (from his 80's to his death at the age of 101), a virtual recluse.

Jablonski discusses all of these phases in great detail, and we come away feeling that we really know Berlin.

There was one thing in this biography that I felt could only be of interest to another song-writer. This was when Jablonski would give long examples of the make-up of various chords in a given song. Other than this detail, which one could skip if he or she wished, I felt that this was a superior biography.

A Very Detailed Biography.......2002-09-16

Author Edward Jablonski has written a very thorough book covering the life of Irving Berlin. This is the third biography I have read on Irving Berlin and in many ways it is much the same as the other two. One thing I did notice in this book is the detailed plot explanations of Berlin's plays that he wrote over the years. I did not necessarily care for all this detail, but it does provide the reader with information he may or may not care about. As an introductory book on Irving Berlin I would recommend "Irving Berlin--A Life in Song" by Philip Furia. Author Jablonski's book "American Troubadour" or Laurence Bergreen's book entitled "As Thousands Cheer" would be best read for someone who already has some introductory knowledge of Irving Berlin.

Build Your Own Network.......2007-04-04

Everything from cables to equipment, this book will walk you through the process of getting your home network set up.

Very Good Basic Overview.......2007-03-26

This new fourth edition of Ms. Ivens best selling book has been expanded to cover the new Windows Vista operating system which has major changes and is up to date on Windows XP Service Pack 2 which again made changes in areas like security that could effect how your network runs.

This is a basic introductory book that begins with what a network is and why you might need one. It starts with simple things like cables and NICs and goes on from there to start talking about the software, using Windows XP and Vista. (No Linux discussion.)

It seems to me that there are three main reasons for having a home network: sharing printers, sharing files, and sharing a high speed internet connection. Chapter 9 is titles Printing Across the Network. Chapter 11 is Using Files from Other Computers.

There's a little bit here and there on sharing an internet connection, but Ms. Ivens, should you read this, I suggest that in your Fifth edition you put in a special chapter on connecting to DSL/Cable. You can explain about the need for a high speed modem, a router/switch, etc. Yes, I know, the material for this is basically there, but a single chapter tieing it all together would be a help.

Disorganized overview of home networking........2006-06-11

Agree with a previous reviewer. Ms. Ivens' approach is disorganized and lacking in any cogent, "how-to" information. The book does provide a good overview of what home networks are, and why an individual may want a home network. But I was looking for a complete "how-to" book that would provide information on how to use what I already own. That is, I am a moderately proficient PC and Mac user. I already have a desktop PC (WinXP, wired) and Mac notebook (OS-X, wireless) which both utilize the same wireless router to access my broadband connection. I purchased this book because I wanted was a way to network the two devices to share files and a printer. This book did not provide that information.

All The Right Info.......2002-10-31

I opened this book as soon as it arrived and started following the well-done, easy to understand, instructions. I was able to connect all the computers in my house into a network. My 12 year old son worked with me, and by following all the steps in the book we were able to move files between computers, print using the same printer, and all 3 people in the household got on the internet at the same time.

I've never seen such clear, easy to follow, instructions about hardware and software settings, which usually scare me.

This book does exactly what the title implies, it shows how to network your home computers. The hints about cabling and the well illustrated directions for installing hardware made it impossible to fail. I had a home network up and going in about an hour, and since then I carried this book to friends' homes and installed their networks. You could start a business with the help of this book.
