Meet a strange world filled with palace intrigue, rebel plots, assassination attempts, civil unrest, economic depression, trash, and the unscrupulous salvager who wants to change it all to suit her own needs. Queen of Denial is a book with one mission: to entertain. It is a fast-paced, hard-hitting, action-packed, science fiction comedy, with a little mystery thrown in for good measure. Ms. Rosen believes in researching her work in every detail. Queen of Denial is the end product of a lifetime of drinking, working in the trash collection business, and getting into fistfights over petty crap.

Good read.......2005-07-24

Queen of Denial isn't the kind of book I would normally read but Selina pulls you into this fast-paced story. I had no idea about the surprise in the book (ok you have to read it -- it's a witty spoiler) so when it hit me, I was hooked.

Selina does a lot to set up Drewcila Qwah as a rough Salvager who screeches obscenities. I was at first put off by the language but once the plot fires off, it suddenly became less bothersome and the book became downright funny. We get glimpses into Drew's character -- she's not as two-dimensional as one might originally think. Beneath that hardened exterior is a tougher woman who actually cares what's going on.

Don't be put off by the language -- it's a fast read that is actually quite good. And quite funny too!

If you are looking for nose-in-the-air literature, you are looking in the wrong place with Queen of Denial.
However, if you want a lightening fast read that will leave you chuckling, kick back and enjoy.

Drewcila Qwah is the best salvager in the galaxy. She loves beer, smoking, rousting about with her first mate Van Gar (a large fur covered alien) in the spaceport bars, and causes a disturbance wherever she goes.

Surprisingly, her garbage scow is hired to transport King Zarco back to his homeworld, and she is made an offer she can't refuse.
But during her mission, she finds out that Zarco has been searching for his missing queen Taralin, and that she's the one he's looking for. She has no memory of her abduction or anything prior to it, for her captures removed part of her brain. Still, she decides to go ahead with Zarco and see what she can get from this planet. After all, she's their Queen.

In an uproarously funny adventure, Drew and Van Gar wind out turning Barion upside down while trying to fix their post war problems, all while someone keeps making attempts on Drew's life.

This book is nothing more than a simplistic romp from one planet to another, more of a character story with a sci-fi background. There is hardly any prose at all, which causes the book to be a bit jumpy, but the dialogue is smart and sassy and filled with laughs and clever banter.

If I were ever to take a space adventure, I would want Drew as my pilot. So put away your snobbish discretion and settle down into the wacky capers of the irascible Queen of Garbage. Enjoy!

A brisk ride.......2003-12-21

Brash and prone to carousing, Drewcila Qwah is one of the best salvagers in the universe, and with her mate (and sometimes lover) Van Gar, she's been having a great time for the past five years. They are hired to ferry a long-lost queen home to rendezvous with the King of Barious. Enemies of Barious kidnapped the queen years ago, and they brainwashed her, so she has no memories of anything except for the past few years. When they reach the rendezvous, Drew finds herself enmeshed deeper in this whole drama than she ever wanted, or thought possible, but her unscrupulous instincts surface and she's determined to make it all to her advantage. This rough and rollicking space adventure is a wild ride full of zany characters and wacky incidents. Rosen tells a good story, but unfortunately there are so many grammatical and editorial errors that plague this book, so some readers may be deterred from "Queen of Denial".

oh just cracked me up.......2003-11-07

do you like bob asprin's humor? terry pratchet's flair? good. now imagine that strong of a voice with enough blue language to make your momma cringe.

it isn't going to change your life, but it might make you question your polical views and pepper your speech with #%$&**! It will make you laugh out loud.

Hilarious four and a half star debut.......2003-09-06

Selina Rosen has a winning effort in "Queen of Denial." The plot is fairly easy to sum up; Drewcila Quah has been a Salvager for many years. She's good at it; she drinks hard, loves hard, and swears a whole lot, as the other Salvagers do.

However, there's a secret in her past that is about to be revealed; seems that she's the missing Queen of an important planet. Her husband waited five years to come after her; now, he's found her.

The sparks fly, but not the way he wants. The King, Zarco, is a very boring guy; he's done a whole lot of warring, he slept with Drew's sister Stasha, and he's not a very nice guy at all in my opinion. Drew, even with all her swearing, bedding and other stuff, is the sympathetic one.

I really liked Drew; she's extremely funny. Her partner the alien is also amusing, and they interact well together. Her sister Stasha is also played for laughs, and is much more sympathetic than any other character in this book other than Drew.

Thing is, plot alone is not the reason to read this. The reason to read it is because it's absolutely, positively hilarious. There are many laugh out loud moments here, too many to list, and the _only_ real drawback is that the frontispiece for the novel (the initial page, explaining things) has a whole lot of punctuation and spelling errors. I don't completely understand this; how did it get through one printing that way, much less multiple printings?

Never mind. Ignore that page. The rest is extremely good.

So, the final tally is four and a half stars, highly recommended.

Adventures in Egypt.......2006-08-14

Chloe Bryce is the biggest wimp ever. She's such a scaredy-cat that her family has a nickname for her: Chloe, Queen of Denial. But when she goes to Egypt as part of an excavation team, she is determined to be brave and hide her scaredy-cat past. She's convinced it will work, until she sees Connor, a boy from her high school, there. She's convinced he's going to blow her cover. But then she and Connor hit off, and everything seems to be going well. Except for snotty January James digging through her stuff, the cursed bracelet she can't seem to get rid of, and the secret Connor seems to be keeping from her. Will she be able to keep her cool and stay fearless? This book is quite funny as a self-professed "scaredy-cat" finds her place in a strange land. You can also read Jan's side of the story in Eyeliner of the Gods by Katie Maxwell.

Oh, Chloe!.......2005-10-30

It's a while since I read this book, but I found it amusing and also enjoyed the details about archaeology and Egypt. It fitted in well with other books I've read about digs, but the characters, all rather "out there" kept my attention.

Chloe, Queen of Denial.......2005-07-01

Even before being sent to Egypt on an archaeological scholarship, Chloe was known as the queen of denial (de Nile). Away from home and all who would entomb her in that persona, she determines to become a bold young woman, but she didn't have a clue about how much trouble boldness could be. Her first step in that direction was to tame a scorpion and kiss the cutest guy on the dig, the only problem being, she didn't know if she kissed Twin I or Twin II. Then, on a romantic moonlit night, she takes one of the twins into a burial chamber to emerge with a cursed and possibly stolen bracelet. Attempting to rid herself of the artifact proves troublesome. It seems to boomerang back to her no matter what she does to get rid of it or which thorn in her side she tries to plant it on. The guy she likes, neither twin, has some kind of secret he can't share. Worst of all, she knows deep in her heart, she's just a fake, still the queen of denial.

*** Smooch is setting the mark in quality young adult fiction, with this being no exception. Chloe's angst could happen anywhere, it just happens to occur in a fabulous setting that mixes Young Indy with a dash of Survivor and a hint of Nancy Drew. A nice book.......2004-07-24

I read this book after its companion book, Eyeliner of the Gods, by Katie Maxwell. As an adult, I found them both a tiny bit dull, but I think a teenage girl would like this book. The main character, Chloe, is a self-proclaimed chicken. She fears anything new and adventurous. When it is discovered that Chloe is interested in Egyptian culture, her parents decide to send her to Egypt to work as an amateur archaeologist with a group called DigEgypt! It's a month-long program for teens interested in archaeology to get some hands-on experience. Chloe's father thinks it will look great on her college applications, but the thought of going makes Chloe sick. She's afraid of the whole thing, starting with the flight. Since no one will know her in Egypt, Chloe decides to use the month to re-invent herself. She's going to be brave and outgoing. One thing threatens to ruin her plan, though, and that's Connor, an older boy from her school back home. But Connor is under the mistaken impression that Chloe hangs out with the cool crowd back home, and Chloe lets him think that. During the dig, Chloe becomes a leader for the other teens. She even leads a mini-revolt to get them more water for baths and laundry. Chloe and Connor grow close, and there's some nice teen romance. The rest of the plot involves an ancient bracelet from the tombs that Chloe can't seem to get rid of. This is the part of the book that is intertwined with Eyeliner of the Gods, by Katie Maxwell. In that book, Jan James is having a similar problem with a bracelet. Chloe thinks Jan is stuck-up because she's on the restoration team, and Jan thinks Chloe is a shallow, lip gloss-obsessed girl. I recommend reading EOTG first. When you read each book, you get to know Jan and Chloe more intimately and you find they're both wrong about each other. I think teenagers would enjoy both books.

Hilarious Accompaniment to 'Eyeliner of the Gods'.......2004-07-23

Sixteen-year-old high school sophomore, Chloe Bryce, is absolutely dreading going on this archaeological dig in the middle of the desert. You see, it wasn't her who wanted to go, but rather her Father (Mr. this will look good on your college application), who forced her to pack up her lip gloss and head out to the Sahara Desert, where she will spend a month at the Tombs of Tekhen and Tekhnet. Little did she know that she would have to spend the entire month smelling gross (seeing as you only get to bathe every ten days), and taking the kind of crazy risks that only Indiana Jones would take willingly. Sure, Chloe got to kiss the absolute hottest guy on the dig, but she also had to put up with snotty January James digging through her belongings. Obviously, this is going to be one very long month.

Naomi Nash has a wonderful, fresh new writing style that makes the reader feel as if they are reading about their best friend, or even themselves. Her vivid descriptions, and hilarious character commentary keep the story moving quickly, while at the same time forcing the reader to pick up the pace, so as to see what will happen next. Chloe is a brazen, bold character, who easily captures the heart and attention of the reader on the opening page when she defeats a killer scorpion who has slipped into her cot uninvited; and her problems and wonky situations just get better, and more exciting, from there. Overall this is a must-read book for all teenagers. Especially those who enjoyed the prequel EYELINER OF THE GODS, written by Katie Maxwell.

A good book for women.......2002-04-09

I thought this was a very well-written book, especially for any woman who has been scorned at some point as the author seems to be able to relate to that. I found it hard to figure out this "who done it". The characters were very interesting which kept the book flowing. Most women will be able to relate to one or both of the main characters in one way or another. I was a little surprised by the ending, I didn't expect the outcome to be as it was. But that's not always a bad thing.

I suppose I was always going to say that, having already been converted myself to Louie Louie as "the only rock and roll song you'll ever need" (collected 60+ versions to date). It's just a fascinating journey with so many unexpected twists and turns but the ever present "duh duh duh". And still amazingly relevant today. And funny!

Intrigue, high drama, and twists and turns.......2005-05-12

A new preface by the author graces the pages of Louie Louie: The History & Mythology Of The World's Most Famous Rock N Roll Song. While it's hard to see how any song, however famous, could earn an entire book discussion, once you delve into Dave Marsh's Louie Louie, with its intrigue, high drama, and twists and turns, it's hard to see what took so long for the full tale to come to light - and yes, it earns its own book. This new edition provides a new preface by Marsh as it covers the complexities of a song which involved even the FBI.

excellent history, memetics.......2002-01-10

By following the fate of one song Marsh gives us an excellent feel for how culture operates at a middle scale, somewhere between the micro-scale of individual performances and listenings and the macroscale of decades-long changes in musical styles. If you're interested in "memetics" but tired of empty bloviation about mind viruses and such, read this book and follow one musical meme on its tour of the memesphere.

Half way through this book I knew more about this rock song then I had ever wanted to know and then it kicked in to the history of Paul Revere and the Raiders. I keep on and she what other obscure trivia is to be revealed.

Excellent Bite-Sized Book.......2003-11-27

I really enjoy chess and over the past year took the first steps to improve my play. This book played an integral part and taught very important "component" skills that I use on a regular basis -- things like how to promote pawns, use the king as a fighting piece, and use the minor pieces effectively in the endgame.

The book took a few days of study with Chessmaster to complete. For someone with a day job and many other interests, this book strikes a perfect balance between content and complexity, highlighting key concepts with useful annotation (as opposed to providing an unguided encyclopedic approach that I have seen in other books.)

Cardoza/Robertie combined this book with "Basic Endgame Strategy: Rooks and Queens" in their new 2003 release called "Easy Endgame Strategies". I just bought this new book even though I already have half of the content in "Kings Pawns and Minor Pieces".

The book is not imposing and was quite enjoyable.

This is really a great book. The exercises are very detailed and set out in a true "learning order." Based on these exercies the "doing order" is then quite obvious.

What would have made this book even better would have been full color. When Paint Shop Pro has a new version I sure hope Sonja does a new book. It will be one book I will surely purchase.

Very good book for a beginner to paint shop pro. Not something I would recommend for someone that has been using paint shop pro. I found it very basic and I had only been using PSP for a few months.

I was hoping for something that would show me more about dealing with photo enhancements rather than making graphic images. I did learn some things that helped me; but I will keep looking for a better PSPX book. The "how to" instructions were quite good for the examples; but I was hoping for more.
