Ask the Bugman: Environmentally Safe Ways to Control Household Pests
ASIN: 1891661019 |
Book Description
The latest treatments and techniques for getting rid of everything from ants to gophers to whiteflies.
Customer Reviews:
witty, practical, balances traditional with green control.......1998-10-18
Bohdan's book covers mammal pests and snakes as well as bugs. He advocates a healthy, live-and-let-live approach, where practical. He gives the reader choices of traditional chemicals, live traps, and environmentally-friendly solutions. He not only identifies pests but points out their benefits as well as detriments. The book is honest, funny and enjoyable, even if your home is not a cockroach haven.
Funny, yet informative and technically superb........1998-06-27
I have been associated with Michael Bohdan, both socially and professionally, for over 15 years, and am gratified to see him share his vast pest control knowledge and experiences through this book. What's Buggin' You is not only fun to read, it is remarkably informative and technically superb. Every homeowner should have this book handy whenever pest problems appear.
Useful and surprisingly funny!.......1998-06-03
I saw the author on the weekend Today show and decided to check out his book. Although I only have minimal problems with pests and such, I still enjoyed the book a lot. Bohdan is really very funny, and often drops in a joke that sneaks up on you with a laugh. Plus, he even reviews bug movies! As far as the pest-control stuff, it sounded pretty authentic to me, but you'd have to see for yourself when you try the techniques on your household pests. He is a professional exterminator, though, so you'd think he knows what he's talking about.

Nifty reference and good source for Oscar pools.......2000-06-09
Though some have said that those with access to the internet should avoid this book, I must disagree. As we don't all walk around or lie in bed wired to our computers, this is a great family-room or bathroom book for occasional reference. And the information is well presented (though I'd like to see listings of all nominees, even in the lesser categories) with an index, which is far more than can be said for "the Envelope Please." Between the two, this one is the way to go.
Useful but often inaccurate.......2000-02-07
This book would be ideal as an Oscar handbook if it were not plagued by small innaccuracies. But the anecdotes are interesting, though scant, and the Oscar pool predictions section does come in handy.
Very, very useful if you have specific info you want........1999-04-08
I've found two books about the Academy Awards which contain lots of interesting information. The "Academy Awards Handbook" both through its year-by-year arrangement and its extensive index allows me to quickly find the specific information I'm looking for. The other book "The Envelope, Please," has lots of delightful information but the table of contents listing is rather cutesy (What exactly would you expect to find under "Missed Opportunities" or "First and Foremost"?) and there's NO index; it has to be read as a novel and has essentially no usefulness as a reference work!
If you're online, no point in getting it.......1999-03-20
Data is data. The scant anecdotal information in this book is not bad - But not enough. The fact that you're reading this on Amazon shows that you already have access to most of the information in this book, and with the internet movie database in a far more user-friendly form. Other books on Oscar (for the same price I strongly recommend the excellent "..AND THE ENVELOPE PLEASE" by A.W. Jones.) give all the same info plus a heck of a lot more with added style, humor, and passion. There's better books out there than this one.

The story of the life and untimely death of a persecuted priest in colonial Peru and the controversy over mysterious, recently discovered documents about him
Customer Reviews:
An illuminating book on a dark corner of history.......2004-02-07
Dr Hyland should be commended for her scholarship, dedication and fortitude on bringing to light the life of Blas Valera. His chronicles give great insight on the transition of Incan to Spanish culture and society that effects Peru to today. Prof Hyland's narrative is very helpful in understanding Blas Valera and the context of the world around him. My only criticism, and a mild one, is that Blas Valera's somewhat gilded view of Incan culture and accomplishments, although understandable given his imprisonment, could have deserved more discussion. The presentation of the Naples documents was fascinating, and I think, fairly represented. The Jesuits and the Incas is a highly readable and recommeneded book for all interested in Peruvian history.
The Jesuit and the Incas.......2004-01-27
The prose was excellent and scholarship first rate. In dealing with the life of Blas Valera Dr. Hyland was confronted with a very complex and controversial topic. Rather than obsessing over the authenticity of the so-called Naples documents, she did a thorough background study of the man and his time and the injustices he experienced at the hands of those institutions and persons he served. In dealing with the authenticity of the Naples documents in the final part of the book, I found her analysis to be thorough and dispassionate. The ethnohistoric data was presented in a clear, highly detailed, and unambiguous manner. Instead of taking sides or taking the data beyond its limits, Dr. Hyland let her readers make up their own minds about the controversy surrounding the Naples documents on the basis of the evidence. In my opinion, Hyland is to be applauded for the breadth and scope of her research and for not letting herself become entangled in the bitter acrimony which no doubt played a large role in some of the poor reviews this fine work received. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Andean ethnohistory.
a response to the reviewer from London.......2003-12-23
I would not normally respond to an anonymous review, but there may be some potential readers who will be seriously misled about the contents of my book by the reviewer from London.
First, most of my book is not about the so-called "Miccinelli documents" -- the sensational manuscripts which claim, among other things, that Valera faked his death, returned secretly to Peru and taught a phonetic form of Inca writing -- at all. The first eight chapters of my book discuss Valera's tumultuous life and radical ideas based entirely on sources other than the Miccinelli documents. Only the final two chapters of my book concern the Miccinelli texts; Chapter 9 describes the documents while Chapter 10 explores the controversy over them.
Second, I state unequivocally in my book that I believe the documents to be forgeries. The issue is whether they are 17th century forgeries or modern forgeries. My book argues that they are 17th century forgeries created by Valera's followers within the Society of Jesus in Peru, a position supported by other respected researchers in the field. Other scholars have argued that the Miccinelli texts are modern forgeries, suggesting in print that Umberto Eco is the criminal mastermind behind this alleged conspiracy of forgery, in collusion with professors at the University of Bologna and other Italian universities. I leave it to readers of my book to decide which position is more convincing.
Because this cannot by posted without assigning stars, and, while I am confident in my book, there is always room for improvement, I assign it three stars.
An intriguing topic, but this book needs work.......2003-12-17
This book proposes to shed light on a dark corner of colonial Latin American history and historiography by exploring the life of Blas Vaelra, the mestizo chronicler who proved so influential in the writing Garcilaso de la Vega's Royal Commentaries of the Incas. This is a laudable goal, but unfortunately this book is evidence of some of the sloppiest kind of scholarly sensationalism in Academia. In reviewing the ongoing controversy over the so-called Miccinelli documents (recently discovered in the private collection of an Italian academic), Prof. Hyland does a mediocre job of detailing just how questionable these sources are. Her responses to more creditable and sober critics are unconvincing, as are her apologies for the weaknesses she *does* recognize in the documents.
Those who craft elaborate frauds often shield themselves behind what they like to characterize as the "establishement's" inability to brook radical transformations, but that is simply not the case. When revolutionary material is available to genuine public scrutiny, and when that material hasn't been as effectively and convincingly discredited as these texts have been, intellectual change comes with relative ease.
I do hope Ms. Hyland is merely a victim of poor training and bad judgment. As of this moment, the Miccinelli documents do not carry enough legitimacy for her to depend on them as much as she does.
A most fascinating life story.......2003-12-12
The Jesuit & The Incas: The Extraordinary Life Of Padre Blas Valera, S.j. by Sabine Hyland (Associate Professor of Anthropology at St. Norbert College and co-director of a multidisciplinary project studying the Chanka people of Peru) is the informed and informative biography of Father Blas Valera, a man born in the 1500's to a native Incan mother and Spanish father. A Jesuit in sixteenth-century Peru, Blas Valera dared to believe and spread word that the Incan culture, religion, and language were equal to the Christian way of life -- a view that his superiors claimed was heresy and for which they compelled his imprisonment and exile. Blas Valera allegedly died at the hands of English pirates in 1597, yet a recent discovery among private documents suggest that Valera's death was faked by Jesuits, and that he returned to Peru to continue teaching his followers. A most fascinating life story written with a keen eye to research and detail, The Jesuit & The Incas is a highly recommended contribution to Peruvian History in general, and the New World history of the Catholic Church in the 16th century in particular.

Generally good, but don't trust the homemade putty recipe.......2000-04-02
This book seems to have lots of great concepts in it for (as the title says) fixing and avoiding mistakes. However, I had a very bad experience with the homemade hide-glue/sawdust putty recipe on page 58. I spent an entire weekend trying to get the recipe to produce something useful, but it just doesn't work.

Every woodworker NEEDS this book!.......1999-06-08
Let's face it. You wouldn't be reading this book if you weren't a woodworker, right? You probably already know what kind of mistakes you're capable of in the shop. This book gives you options to try and fix those mistakes. I had to laugh outloud while reading the book because half the mistakes in the book are things that I've done myself! Lots of design options to save your work from becoming scrapwood.

Book Description
JavaServer Pages (JSP) has built a huge following since the release of JSP 1.0 in 1999, providing Enterprise Java developers with a flexible tool for the development of dynamic web sites and web applications. While new point releases over the years, along with the introduction of the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL), have incrementally improved the rough areas of the first version of the JSP specification, JSP 2.0 takes this technology to new heights. JavaServer Pages, Third Edition, is completely revised and updated to cover the JSP 2.0 and JSTL 1.1 specifications. It includes detailed coverage of the Expression Language (EL) incorporated into JSP 2.0, the JSTL 1.1 tag libraries and the new function library, the new tag file format that enables custom tag library development without Java code, the simplified Java tag library API, improvements in the JSP XML syntax, and more. Further, it details setup of the Apache Tomcat server, JSP and JSTL syntax and features, error handling and debugging, authentication and personalization, database access, XML processing, and internationalization. This book recognizes the different needs of the two groups of professionals who want to learn JSP: page authors interested in using JSP elements in web pages, and programmers concerned with learning the JSP API and using JSP effectively as a part of an enterprise application. If you're in the first group, you'll learn from the practical web application examples in the second part of the book. If you're in the latter group, you'll appreciate the detailed coverage of advanced topics in the third part, such as how to integrate servlets and JavaBeans components with JSP using the popular Apache Struts MVC framework, and how to develop custom tag libraries using the JSP API, with realistic examples that you can use as a springboard for your own libraries. "Hans Bergsten, a JSP expert group veteran and one of our most active contributors, has thoroughly and accurately captured the new features of JSP 2.0 and JSTL 1.1 in a way that is well-organized and easy to understand. With excellent, to-the-point examples, this book is a 'must have' for any serious JSP 2.0 developer." --Mark Roth, JSP 2.0 Specification Lead, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Hans Bergsten is the founder of Gefion Software, a company focused on Java services and products based on J2EE technologies. Hans has been an active participant in the working groups for both the servlet and JSP specifications since their inception and contributes to other related JCP specifications, such as JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) and JavaServer Faces (JSF), and, as one of the initial members of the Apache Jakarta Project Management Committee, helped develop the Apache Tomcat reference implementation for the servlet and JSP specifications.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully written.......2006-04-14
This is an extremely well written and informative book. I have
lots of experience with servlets, so I don't know how the book
will appeal to page designers, but I had no problem reading and
enjoying the chapters oriented more toward them. I used to look
at JSP and see the same kind of maintenance nightmare that comes
with something like PHP when your project gets large. I have
been using WebMacro/Velocity but am now a convert to JSP since
it has matured. I love the author's philosophy of no scriptlets
in your JSPs. I own many programing books, but I believe this
is the best written I've seen.
Perfect book for a structured reader........2006-03-08
If you are looking for a quick cookbook this should not be your choice. If you want to learn JSP in depth, buy it right now. Hans guides you from the basics to comprehensive details of JSP technology in a very structured way.
In any case, (from my point of view) JSP is not the whole jigsaw for building web applications, it's just a piece of it. So don't expect to be able to build real web applications if you just have read this book. At least, consider reading also Java, Struts/MVC and SQL.
Good, but not great, user guide for JSP.......2005-12-27
Perhaps this is as good a user guide as is possible for JSP, which is a good, but not great techology.
JSP integrates between web markup user interfaces (usually HTML) and back-end java technology (usually servlets), and best practices have most of the interesting work done in these technologies, not in JSP. JSP's flaws come from too many spurious features that lead the unsuspecting user far away from best practices.
JSP's strengths as a template technology for web view markup come in its 2.0 version with its addition of programmatic logic to markup (JSTL for logical branches and loops, and tags for subroutines) which allow for development of markup without repeated code. This is a great benefit of JSP, and this book does a fairly good job of explaining it for JSTL/logic, but talks around it with confusing examples for tags/subroutines. To this book's credit, it is the only decent reference I have found for JSP 2.0 tag library development.
Best practices with JSP as an integration technology involve what is called "Model 2 MVC" where the JSP page is strictly used only as a template for markup (the "view" which is the "V" from "MVC"), a JavaBean is used for the M-"model" and a single servlet is used for the C-"controller". This concept is mentioned in this book, but its up to you to figure out how to implement it, and the book is full of examples that show off unrealistic uses of JSP's spurious features and are anything but best practices. At some point in using JSP's and servlets, you are going to have to go head-to-head (actually, head-to-confusing-XML) with a real deployment descriptor, and this book will give you little help as to why it doesn't work.
Until someone writes a truly useful reference for JSP and servlets, you will have to follow the time-honored tradition of finding an example that works and cut-and-pasting it into your web application. Poring over this book will help some, as will poring over Craig McClanahan's online doc that comes with Tomcat. The best book I've found so far for explaining best practice design with JSP is Rod Johnson's "expert one-on-one J2EE Design and Development" (read the chapters on web-tier MVC design and views in the web tier) though it's description of JSP is somewhat dated, and it won't help you out with implementation details.
Horribly disorganized.......2005-07-21
O'Reilly falls down on its usual excellent editorial job and delivers an undisciplined unstructured mess that is useless as a reference. The JSTL examples are so incomplete as to be virtually worthless. As an experienced developer, I spent my 45 bucks expecting a useful reference and practical guide, instead getting a beginner's tour and some appendices of jstl syntax spec.
I wish I'd bought a different book.......2005-04-19
There is some really good information in this book. The problem is, you have to wade through a mess to find it. The author is constantly referencing chapters later in the book, suggesting that the reader look ahead for information on the subject currently being talked about. Much of the information in later chapters should have been included earlier on. Besides the annoyance of having to read ahead to keep up with the current subject, the author goes back on himself constantly. Examples are shown as a functional way to do things, and then later on, I found myself being told not to follow the methods explained previously because they arent an efficient way to work. On top of this, the language of the book seems overcomplicated. Simple concepts are explained in a long drawn out fashion left me wondering where I had lost my way.
I am picking things up that I wouldn't have figured out without the book, but I'm quite convinced that another book would have had me writing applications already.
