Book Description
ports Illustrated Knockouts: Five Decades of Swimsuit Photography celebrates the art of that uniquely American institution, the Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issue. Beginning with the inaugural issue on January 24, 1964, which featured model Babette March in a modest four-page spread, Knockouts goes on to document the evolution of the swimsuit issue through five decades of models who, largely by virtue of their appearances here, became celebrities, including Elle Macpherson, Cheryl Tiegs, Tyra Banks, and Kathy Ireland.Besides assembling a selection of the best photographs in book form for the first time, Knockouts offers an ample selection of outtakes and other previously unpublished photos, various quotes from models, photographers, art directors, and commentaries on the logistical and technical aspects of the shoots and the exotic ports of call in which they were staged.Customer Reviews:
Magnificant girls, lousy binding.......2004-08-18
Old School.......2002-12-09
"All the SI bathing suit models are muscular and lean and authentic. They don't mind working up a good sweat. They're proud of the bodies they've worked into shape. There is nothing powdery or gushy about them. In other words the women in the swimsuit issue are not the worse role models a young girl could have."
And she's absolutely right. If I had abs like that I would show them off proudly too!!! Knowing a little bit about physical fitness...I know that it takes a lot of discipline and hard work to get your body to look that toned. The last thing in the world I would do is criticize them for this. I came to SI just by chance I saw the 1995 special on TV and was left majorly impressed at how the young women conducted themselves. They were definitely no ones "hoochies". Actually I was so impressed that when I saw several of them on the covers of various magazines etc.. I immediately remembered their names. And that is not something that happens with everyone.
I never understood the hullabaloo people make about the SI swimsuit issues. I think that it is absolutely wonderful. My favorite period was when Jules Campbell was the editor. The woman definitely had an eye for (tasteful) beauty. It was pure old school: In that while the models were certainly appealing-it was always in a DIGNIFIED WAY-everything about these ladies said "respect me". These women carried themselves with the confidence of Queens. They exuded assurance and implied that they had the world on a string.
The pictures in the book are absolutely exquisite and are worth every penny.
Believe it or not in a world where actresses and film stars often look as if they work in the adult entertainment business. The SI swimsuit models are not the worst role models young girls can have. Thanks ladies for providing such an inspiration to me!
Great Collector's Item, a must have for the bookshelf.......2002-09-27
It was a treat to see the some old favorites, going from Christie Brinkley and Elle McPherson to current cover girls Heidi Klum and Daniela Pestova. Great addition to the library!
Not quite perfect.......2002-07-18
The only reason I say it's not quite perfect is that they seem to have been a little too ambitious on the size of the book. Almost every photo is stretched to the limits of the pages, which can make for great impact, but some of the photos have lost a little quality being blown up that much. You can see some graininess in several of the shots; I think most of them are the older ones. Most of the pages are fine however.
It would also have been nice to see some of the body paint pics in here but they are absent.
Overall a nice book.
Very nice!.......2002-04-18

Au contraire!.......2003-02-14
Good One.......2002-05-21
D2, 3ed.......2001-03-15
That being said, the diablerie supplement was a rather large dissappointment.
Most of the material was simple conversion of the 2nd ed. version into 3ed format. True, the classes were displayed into 3ed, with some interesting improvements, but a lot of the D2 flavour was soured by "game balance" issues, which in my opinion were simply someone's opinion of how the D2 world should work, instead of how it did. A potent example was the extremely limited lifespan of a Necromancer's minions. Another was the fact that, unlike the computer game, a character couldn't master all the features of their class.
The spell conversion format was sadly done. In addition to the forementioned limited duration minions, many spells didn't function anything like their computer counterparts (cf: Bone Spear...). Additionally, while spellcasters were brought in line with the computer game, they were effectively truncated when compared to mainstream dnd.
The expected updates to the magic item system, including a comprehensive discussion of the gems and socketable items, was nonexistent. Likewise, the descriptions of the various items lead to a great deal of confusion over certain game effect issues, such as bonus stackability and over-lapping or contradictory effects.
Additionally, many blatent errors are present throughout the book. For the price you pay, you'd expect the editors to at least catch simple errors, such as table headings. Likewise, items in the equipment table don't quite match those in either the magic item listings or the character descriptions.
Despite all this, a DM willing to wade through a lot of errors can still make good use of this book. I'd suggest a good read-over to decide what revisions you'd like to make before starting play. Likewise, for the serious D2 gamer, a trip to the Chaos Sanctuary (linked through the Blizzard site) can provide a lot of clarifications and inspirations.
A true waste of paper........2001-01-11
This book is more of a conversion of 3rd edition into ahalf diablo/half 3rd edition game system. The weapons with tweakingcould be used in a 3rd edition campaign, but many of them seem a bitpowerful compared to those in the DMs guide. The monsters are aboutall you can take from this book for a 3rd edition campaign, but eventhat is a bit of a waste of .... Heck I don't even remember seeingstats for Diablo himself? Certainly not his brothers or anyinformation about the NPC's that assist the heroes throughDiablo.
In my opinion, Skip this book and skip it fast. Spend your... on a 2nd edition module and convert it to 3rd edition. You willget more for your money!
Mmmm, yummy..........2001-01-01
If you are looking for a Diablo II campaign, look no farther. Here is your book. If you want some more monsters, spells, and over 1,000,000 magic items, here's your book.

SQR in PeopleSoft and Other Applications Second Edition: PeopleSoft v.8

SQR in PeopleSoft and Other Applications fills a big gap in the enterprise computing marketplace. For starters, this book explains (beginning from near zero) how to program with Structured Query Report Writer (SQR). It discusses the peculiarities of writing SQR software to interact with PeopleSoft databases. Readers are shown how to integrate SQR programs with the Process Scheduler and how to take advantage of the PeopleSoft API. There's coverage of SQC files and the mechanics of calling SQR code from PeopleSoft online panels, plus appendices that document command-line flags and built-in functions. The authors' approach to the topic reflects their considerable experience as SQR and PeopleSoft consultants. SQR in PeopleSoft--particularly its more advanced sections--contains lots of code that feels like it came only slightly modified from a consulting job. One particularly neat element is an SQR program that uses a flat file to provide an interface between PeopleSoft and IBM/Lotus cc:Mail. Though there's no companion CD-ROM, you can download all the code from the publisher's Web site. The code is well organized and serves as a fine base for the tutorial provided. --David Wall
Topics covered: SQR data elements fundamentals, pages, programs, and procedures; query and reporting capabilities; advanced SQR capabilities; graphics (including bar coding); Internet integration; and complex data structures.

There is no shortage of solid advice.......2004-01-12
From a functional PeopleSoft user's standpoint.......2003-03-08
In summary, if you are a pretty experienced functional person (I am a consultant), are motivated enough to invest the time to learn SQR, and have access to the tool, this may be a good choice. Certainly more information (understandably) than you can get from a five-day SQR class.
*The* standard reference on SQR.......2002-08-26
- It teaches good programming practices. Anyone who has developed in any procedural language (including scripting and query languages) can quickly learn SQR. Therein lies a problem that this book overcomes: the excellent advice given about program development and structure can offset bad habits picked up in other languages.
- It's a definitive resource for SQR developers. Although SQR is relatively easy to learn, it's also rich with features missing from most other languages, such as complete control over printed and screen output, built-in constructs for graphs and charts, and multiple output file formats. Using many of these features not easy for beginners or programmers more used to other languages, but this book shows by example how to exploit every feature SQR has to offer.
- It dispels the common notion that SQR is a PeopleSoft-only tool. In fact, PeopleSoft doesn't own the language, and SQR will work in any database environment. More important, the book shows how to develop application and database independent programs that will work in any environment. This is an awakening for those who are going down proprietary paths, such as standardizing on Oracle's PL/SQL. While PL/SQL itself a powerful language, but is limited to Oracle - migrating from Oracle to, say, DB2 requires that all PL/SQL programs be scrapped. Had the applications and reports been developed in SQR the only changes would be to tables referenced.
In addition to the above, this book also provides good practices for forming SQL queries and understanding how a poorly formed join can make the difference between a resource hog and an unintrusive application. Since SQL, like SQR, is easy to learn many developers take the path of least resistance and develop queries with no thought on their effect on production systems. This book gives sound advice for avoiding that mistake.
The section on PeopleSoft, while out of date with respect to version 8, still contains valuable information for the majority of SQR developers whose exposure to SQR is via PeopleSoft.
There is something for everyone in this book - beginners can learn SQR the right way, and seasoned developers will have a ready reference that covers almost every facet of SQR in practical terms. If your job is primarily SQR development I also recommend that you also get a copy of "SQR Programmer Reference" by Don Mellen (ISBN 0967773008) as a quick reference to the features and nuances of SQR.
Holy Smokes.......2002-04-26
Great !!.......2001-11-02
I have been working with SQR for five years. I have used examples and the SQR manuals to accomplish what I wanted. This work provided me with a lot of knowledge that I had never taken the time to pick up. Now even if I take the time off and need a refresher the sections are highlighted.
I have found this book very useful as both a reference and a knoweldge builder. Also, the writing style was good enough that rereading the portions that I was alread aware of was not too irksome. Interestingly, I could swear some of the interview questions I have been asked came right out of this book.
