Clunk.......2006-03-09
Nodwick and Co. are back!
The long-suffering henchman and his band of friends are back in the twenty-eighth "Nodwick" adventure, where "Dungeons and Dragons" gets a comedic quirk. And yes, dumb cluck Yeager is the one who gets affected in a big way.
Long ago, the gods created the Tree of Cerebrostim-X, whose fruit made people smart. When mortals got too uppity, the gods blasted the tree and vanished. Now the only remaining part of it is the Clue By Four, a wooden club that makes anyone struck with it intelligent.
Now Nodwick, Yeager, Artax and Piffany take it, so they can use it against the dark god Baphuma'al. To solve minor problems (like escaping an erupting volcano), Yeager repeatedly bonks himself on the head with it, turning himself into a super-intellectual. Problem is, eventually he gets so smart he ends up bumping into the gods...
This is one of those mega-goofy Nodwick adventures, which only have a medium-level connection to the main Battle Against the Dark God storyline. And it's a fun one, with Yeager somehow managing to be superintelligent and stupid at the same time. How smart do you have to be to get a clue?
Aaron Williams also has some fun with the various gods, since all good D&D stories have gods (good and bad). Assorted deities like Thor and Osiris make cameos early on, and Yeager even takes a trip to Divine Central. ("Are you trying to get me smote with lightning?") And he never takes the spoofery over the top, preferring a dry, tongue-in-cheek approach.
There's also some gaming geek stuff at the back, quite amusing to look at, and a promo for another Aaron Williams series called "PS238," about superhero kiddies.
Aaron Williams' "Nodwick 28" is a good example of fantasy spoofery, with big dumb barbarians suddenly getting... smart. The only thing scarier is Baphuma'al himself.

Book Description
Surviving Ned Johnson is an often funny, sometimes sad, but always insightful look into the friendship of two men. One man, arguably one of the most powerful in the world. The other man, Dick Larson, a self-made man who became friends with Ned Johnson for thirty years and expected the friendship to last. What broke them apart in such a way that the two men are now virtual enemies?

the author is fascinating.......2006-01-07
I haven't read Mr. Larson's book as yet, but my husband and I met him on the public landing in Camden, Maine on Christmas Day 2005. He is a fascinating man with a multitude of stories and lots of personal magnetism. If his book is as good as his oral anecdotes, it's bound to be a good read.

Book Description
One of the most outstanding, enigmatic characters of the European intelligentsia in the latter half of the twentieth century, Pier Paolo Pasolini holds an important place in Western cultural history, particularly the history of the 1960s. As the author of poetry in the local language of his Italian province, as well of novels and theoretical essays, and as the director of remarkable films, and also as a graphic artist and painter, Pasolini concentrated on timeless, archaic themes: the fate of humanity, peasant life, religion, sexuality, death. By moving outside of accepted norms, and by creating images of extraordinary clarity and focus on the subjects of religion, sex and politics, he became one of the greatest provocateurs in Italian society. Pasolini and Death, published in commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of his death, provides insight into his moral concepts and ideals through his essays, films, drawings and paintings. One of the provocative propositions raised here is that, from an early point, Pasolini's understanding of art and his worldview carried within them the idea of violent death, and that he might have consciously sought that fate--sought out the circumstances in which he was murdered--in order to reconcile his life and work. Following the 2005 retraction of a central suspect's confession, the Rome police have reopened his case.

Excellent, thorough, and unbiased.......2005-08-19
"Pasolini Requiem" is by far the most complete biography of the fascinating filmmaker, poet, painter, and political commentator. Schwartz presents as clear a picture as possible of an ambiguous, ambitious, controversial (and to some ways of thinking pretentious and immoral) artist balancing a compulsion to create wholly original products with a desire to revive and continue ancient, nearly dead traditions.
One of the more impressive aspects of this massive bio is that it manages to explain Pasolini's well-documented quirks, deviancy, and combativeness without moralizing or defending the subject. PPP's life makes for absorbing reading, though the author's dedication to presenting seemingly every available fact sometimes bogs down the flow of the narrative. With that one relatively minor caveat, I can easily recommend the book for those interested in artist bios that go beyond superficial criticism, the birth of independent cinema in Europe, the conflict between art and censorship, or Italian life during the World War II era.

Book Description
Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Left Behind series are but the latest manifestations of American teenagers' longstanding fascination with the supernatural and the paranormal. In this groundbreaking book, Lynn Schofield Clark explores the implications of this fascination for contemporary religious and spiritual practices. Relying on stories gleaned from more than 250 in-depth interviews with teens and their families, Clark seeks to discover what today's teens really believe and why. She finds that as adherence to formal religious bodies declines, interest in alternative spiritualities as well as belief in "superstition" grow accordingly. Ironically, she argues, fundamentalist Christian alarmism about the forces of evil has also fed belief in a wider array of supernatural entities. Resisting the claim that the media "brainwash" teens, Clark argues that today's popular stories of demons, hell, and the afterlife actually have their roots in the U.S.'s religious heritage. She considers why some young people are nervous about supernatural stories in the media, while others comfortably and often unselfconsciously blur the boundaries between those stories of the realm beyond that belong to traditional religion and those offered by the entertainment media. At a time of increased religious pluralism and declining participation in formal religious institutions, Clark says, we must completely reexamine what young people mean--and what they may believe--when they identify themselves as "spiritual" or "religious." Offering provocative insights into how the entertainment media shape contemporary religious ideas and practices, From Angels to Aliens paints a surprising--and perhaps alarming--portrait of the spiritual state of America's youth.

Great read.......2005-09-25
Lynn Schofield Clark provides us with the exciting opportunity to venture into the various worlds of teen spirituality. Her analysis covers everything from rituals of the spend-the-night party games like ouija boards and "light as a feather" where one teen levitates to television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Clark miraculously combines the book knowledge of an academic and the deep understanding and caring of a church youth group volunteer.
I recommend this book for anyone who works with youth (e.g., teachers; youth pastors) as well as parents of teens. It would also make a fabulous addition to college courses. Clark applies theories from Sociology, Cultural Studies, and Media Studies to down-to-earth examples that students are sure to enjoy!
Much more than Buffy..........2003-10-17
Great book for anyone trying to understand how teenagers think about religion. Clark challenges easy definitions of what constitutes religious expression and symbol by spending serious time and effort listening to teens talk about their beliefs and what they listen to, watch and read. The author makes some particularly fascinating observations about teenage interest in aliens and marginalization. Angels to Aliens will appeal to people trying to understand younger members of congregations as well as those who find themselves outside organized religion.
Fascinating, well-researched book on teens, media and belief.......2003-08-08
This is a fascinating study of the role of media and religion in the lives of young people. As a media studies scholar, I found the book refreshing in its clarity and in its interest in how teens think about and deal with the notion of the supernatural.
The author's use of ethnographic techniques gives the book detail and depth, as it goes far beyond the limits of survey research to look at religion in American culture. This is a must-read for everyone interested in culture and media, as it deals seriously with profound changes in American society.
A Questionable Study.......2003-07-27
Ms. Clark has written a book about her interviews with young people and their families and has tried to draw conclusions about their religious beliefs from their television-watching habits. There are so many questions raised in the reader's mind that the book can hardly be called a valid study--perhaps an extensive opinion poll would be more apt.

Some errors but overall very helpful.......2000-04-12
I usually only use cheat books when I get stuck. This one is so colorful you may want to read it for its own sake. There are a few errors in the storyline though. I believe the book may have been written for the N64 version of the game vice the PC version. It still works for PCs though and its at a decent price.

Excellent advice with a wider audience than QA.......2004-03-01
Think of this book as a 300 page checklist that uncovers gaps in the testing process, some glaring and some more subtle. From that perspective you are not getting yet another book on how to test software, but insights into the author's extensive experience and knowledge. Therein lies the value of this book, and why it is applicable to not only software QA professionals at all experience levels, but to project managements, application support professionals, and developers.
The book is divided into chapters that address a specific phase in the testing process, starting with requirements through to text execution. I won't dwell on the content that will be of particular interest to QA practitioners because the entire book applies. Instead, I'll cite the information that other stakeholders in application delivery will find useful because I believe this book has a much wider audience than just QA:
- Chapter I (Requirements) should be read by project managers and the requirements team. It underscores the importance of integrating the QA team at the earliest stage of a project.
- Chapter IV (System Architecture) shows the importance of communications between the architects and design team and the QA team. Specifically, if QA isn't working closely with architecture, designs may not be testable, which will impose significant costs downstream in the applications delivery process.
- Chapter VI (Unit Testing) gives advice on how to effectively engage the development team in the overall quality strategy.
- Chapter X (Managing Test Execution) has excellent advice on managing defects, which has a plethora of stakeholders and roles, from support, business and development domains. In addition, the guidance on bounding the test execution cycle is not of primary interest to project managers, but also to business stakeholders. It's a sad commentary on the way some organizations manage the test environment when advice for separating the test and development environments need to be included, but this commingling happens too often and I was happy to see it included in this chapter.
This is not a 'how to test' book, it is a compilation of pitfalls and how to avoid them. It is a welcome addition to the growing software quality body of knowledge and one that I recommend highly.
A deft, concentrated treatment........2003-06-04
I proof-read this book and it was so good I felt compelled to read it a second time! I have read several of Elfriede's books and I always find them well organized and consistently readable.
Elfriede is a well known authority in this field and in Effective Software Testing she has produced a state of the art handbook for a comprehensive testing effort.
The format is very pragmatic. The book is split into different areas in a useful sequence and each area has an overview with seperate following chapters providing more detail. The chapters are concise and the subject area's contents are concentrated and free of jargon.
We have implemented many of these precepts in our organization to very good effect. Highly reommended!
Use in conjunction with books on unit testing.......2003-05-16
My review of this book is based on my having recently read several others about software testing. In particular, "Test-Driven Development: By Example" by Kent Beck, where the basic premise is that the tests are written either before or simultaneously with the code. I have long believed that this approach is the best way to create quality code and I am skeptical about any other testing approach. The plans in this book can be considered as a broad overview of the testing strategy rather than down into the specifics of how to write tests for specific blocks of code.
Many of the examples are in the realm of the obvious, but not always clearly implemented. For example, number 17 is "Verify that the system supports testability" and number 31is "Know the different types of testing-support tools." In the case of 17, the word system is being used to describe large projects and the topic deals with verifying that it is possible to test the integrated system by tracking the source of errors and how the components interact with each other. Tracking down errors that arise when systems are integrated is very hard, and in general it is necessary to make the plans on how to track down such errors when the architecture for the system is being designed. Therefore, the point, which seems obvious, is in fact a very critical one.
Determining what software testing tools are available is another very critical step in the effective, efficient testing of software. The enormous number of different pathways through modern software makes it impossible to use even the largest army of testers to check them all. Therefore, the only way to provide reasonable coverage of the options is to let other software examine it. Tools such as memory and other system resource checkers, source code scanners that look for "obvious" bugs, programs that generate test data sets either randomly or clustered about most likely values, and test generators can sometimes provide valuable assistance in cleaning code. When working in C/C++, I found a code scanner to be extremely helpful, and wrote a simple one some time ago. It searched for instances of a single "=" in Boolean expressions, semicolons immediately after if, while and for loops, and places where the delete command was used on pointers that might point to an array. It was simple, but it did find some bugs that quite likely would have taken me hours to find.
The testing principles are organized into ten categories:
* Requirements phase.
* Test planning.
* The testing team.
* The system architecture.
* Test design and documentation.
* Unit testing.
* Automated testing tools.
* Automated testing: Selected best practices.
* Nonfunctional testing.
* Managing test execution.
As you can see, the concept of testing is included from the very first stages of the project. This is essential, as it is very possible to incorporate something into the design that will make effective testing difficult or even impossible. Experienced software testers should be included in the planning from the first day of construction.
I consider this book to be a companion volume to those that emphasis testing as part of coding. With this book and one of the others, you can raise the level of your software quality quotient, which makes the life of everyone much easier.
A nice addition.......2003-04-30
I wasn't sure what to expect from this author's third book covering the topic of testing, but yet again the author has produced a very useful addition.
In my opinion, this book serves as a complementary guide to the author's other books, which are already part of my testing library.
This book is a highly informative summary of important factors to consider during the testing planning and execution phases.
Reviewing and considering each of the 50 steps described in the book is a must and allows the test manager or lead to design a blueprint for the testing effort. All suggestions described in the book should be considered, when conducting test planning and test execution, to make sure nothing has been missed.
Outstanding testing techniques........2003-04-30
This book contains a cornucopia of excellent experience based testing practices. This book is very informative for neophyte testers, mid-level testers, qa managers, and organizations struggling with preliminary testing tasks, specifically the most important areas of initial testing to focus on such as test planning, creating test cases, unit testing, etc. The author excels in providing techniques to the readers that will help the readers "build an application with quality as opposed to testing for quality". The author addresses all important techniques and topics related to the testing effort that parallels all conventional phases of software development.I particularly enjoyed the author's pellucid writing style, organization of materials and experience based insights into the world of testing. I found that even as an experienced tester with several years of experience leading software testing efforts at several fortune 500 companies I was able to learn a great deal from this book. Happy readings!
