    Book Description

This book is concerned with some of the conceptual and practical problems of measuring the changes in welfare of individuals and the excess burdens arising from taxation. It provides an introductory review of alternative concepts and practical approaches to the measurement of welfare as well as providing a number of practical examples of welfare analyses in a variety of contexts.

The excess burden of a tax is a central concept in economics. John Creedy provides an introduction to various concepts of welfare change, paying particular attention to the measurement issues involved. He then applies the methods outlined to the measurement of marginal tax reform and indirect tax reform, with empirical data taken from Australia. He also examines the redistributive effect of price changes in Australia between 1980-1995, and the effects of inflation in New Zealand over the period 1993-1995. Finally, he calculates the welfare costs of monopoly and measures the burdens of carbon taxation and welfare.

Measuring Welfare Changes and Tax Burdens will be of interest to students and academics working in the areas of public finance and public policy, as well as economists working in government.

      Book Description

The Book of Elementals Vol. 1 and 2 is an omnibus reprint edition of two classic fantasies by Phyllis Eisenstien: In Sorcerer's Son, Cray Ormoru, born in magic and raised with sorcery, dwelt in a world of happiness within the walls of Castle Spinweb. His mother, Delivev the sorceress, provided everything he needed or desired. Still Cray yearned for something more. And as he grew from boy to young man, Cray sensed that the time had come to undertake the quest to find the father he had never known, the young knight who had pledged eternal love to Delivev and then never returned from a final mission for his own lord. And so Cray set out on the journey which would take him from town to castle to a fortress of bronze, totally unprepared for the sorrows and dangers that lay ahead. For the fate of Cray's father would only be discovered by the light of demon fire... In The Crystal Palace, Cray and his friend Feldar Sepwin, a seer, craft a mirror of silver, wood and spider web, enchanted to show the viewer his or her heart's desire. Yet for Cray the mirror showed nothing for years. Then one day he was drawn to it to see the image of a young girl. But who she was and where she dwelled remained mysteries. In time, as the girl grew into a beautiful woman, Cray discovered her home with the help of demons of Fire, Air and Ice-a magnificent palace in the realm of Ice. Cray discovered that she was Aliza, a sorceress dedicated solely to the study of her craft. And Cray realized that his quest had just begun-for Aliza was as much prisoner as mistress of her Crystal Palace, and even Cray might not master the power to break the spell and set her free...

      Book Description

A vibrant history of the British satire explosion of the early 1960s-from Private Eye and Beyond the Fringe to That Was the Week That Was-and its lasting influence on comedy. Humphrey Carpenter's A Great, Silly Grin is both a thoughtful history and a great deal of fun. The British satire boom of the early 1960s created a motherlode of styles and material for generations of bright comedians and social critics on both sides of the Atlantic and set a standard for clever humor that still shapes comedy and commentary in America today. Carpenter's history of that formative era revisits the 1960 Edinburgh Festival, when a staggeringly inspired satirical review startled a public steeped in the polite, bland banality of the 1950s; recalls the appearance in London coffee bars of a scruffy yellow pamphlet calling itself Private Eye, and looks back at the groundbreaking BBC television program That Was the Week That Was. Exclusive interviews with the people involved are woven together with a wealth of comic material, photographs-most from private collections and never before published-and other contemporary material to bring the era vividly to life. Carpenter also assess the satirical movement's impact in America. A Great, Silly Grin is a feast of nostalgia for those who remember its signature comedians fondly, and an insightful look back at a high-water mark for satire in the English speaking world.

4 out of 5 stars As Peter Cook used to say..........2003-08-30

Just read A Great Silly Grin: The British Satire Boom of the 1960s, by Humprey Carpenter. This period has long been a subject of interest to me despite the fact that I'm too young (and geographically challenged) to have seen most of the programs in the first place.

Besides being a linked series of show business biographies of key figures of the time (The Beyond the Fringe foursome, etc), the book raises some good discussion.

Just how much does satire really matter, if it does at that? As Peter Cook used to say, the peak of satire was 1930's Berlin--and look how much that did to prevent the rise of Hitler.

But the best part of the text may be the final chapter, which paints an unflattering picture of the state of the art in 2000-era Great Britain--and it's sobering how much of it applies to the US as well.

3 out of 5 stars for Monty Python fans.......2002-08-26

Although it has aspirations to social history this is largely celebrity bio. Those who have an interest in Dudley Mooore, John Cleese, David Frost, Alan Benett, Jonathan Miller and so forth, and who remembember Beyond the Fringe and That Was The Week That Was will find it interesting. The number of characters becomes bewildering and boredom sets in as accounts of the obscure and forgotten multiply. It livens up when it recounts some of the skits we thought funny at the time.
It is perhaps deflating to realize that these satirical iconoclasts owed their initial careers to the British governmemt. They got their starts on the payrolls of the government-sponsored Edinburgh Festival and as employes of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Would they have fared as well in an open marketplace? Were they causes or beneficiaries of the breakdown in censorship in the 1960's? Carpenter touches on some of these questions but is, I think, too much in awe of the genius of those he writes about. While undoubtedly entertaining their talents for writing funny things and doing funny imitations were of a kind that is widespread.

5 out of 5 stars Grin or Grimace?.......2002-07-30

Carpenter examines English cultural values during the years immediately following World War Two and focuses specifically on the 1960's when students from Oxford and Cambridge universities (with others) challenged those values with immensely entertaining satire. Theirs were significant contributions to a tradition of creative ridicule which extends back more than 2,500 years. Of course, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Dickens are among those English authors properly renowned for their comic genius but are not usually thought of primarily as social satirists. Throughout the Age of Victoria and well into the 20th century, the British Empire flourished within a somewhat rigid social order, one which (generally) seemed to lack a sense of humor. By 1960, England had become "a bankrupt, defenseless little country run by a ridiculously elderly prime minister" (Harold Macmillan) when Jonathan Miller, Peter Cooke, Dudley Moore, and Alan Bennett introduced "Beyond the Fringe" at the Edinburgh Festival. Out of that developed Private Eye magazine, The Establishment (a men's cabaret featuring satire), and the BBC's That Was the Week That Was. Carpenter devotes substantial attention to Miller, Cooke, Moore, and Bennett as they and others detonated a "boom" of social satire whose reverberations continued through Second City, Monty Python, and Saturday Night Live. Carpenter duly notes the influence of the Goon Show (Millgan, Sellers, et al) as well as American humorists such as Mort Sahl, Mel Brooks, Lenny Bruce, and Tom Lehrer on their English counterparts. Of special interest to me is Carpenter's suggestion that, as England continued its decline among world powers in the 1960s, social satire served as a medication to deaden the pain. At one point, he reminds his reader of Cook's warning that England was then in danger of "sinking giggling into the sea." That has not as yet happened and never will but the image remains vivid nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars The evolution of British satire.......2002-06-03

Humphrey Carpenter's Great, Silly Grin follows contemporary British humor, beginning with the 1960 Edinburgh Festival when a satirical review Beyond the Fringe fostered a new breed of British humor. The evolution of British satire that followed through the 1960s receives close examination in this involving survey.

        Book Description

A vibrant history of the British satire explosion of the early 1960s and its lasting influence on comedy A Great, Silly Grin opens at the 1960 Edinburgh Festival, where a staggeringly inspired satirical revue called Beyond the Fringe startled a public steeped in the polite, bland banality of the 1950s. From there it is a short trip to the coffee bars of London, where the appearance of a scruffy yellow pamphlet calling itself Private Eye overturned the way Britons looked at their world. The apotheosis of the satire boom, and the progenitor of so many American comedy acts, was the groundbreaking BBC television program "That Was the Week That Was," which combined elements of sketch comedy and evening-news broadcast to produce something essential, hilarious, and, on occasion, scandalous. Humphrey Carpenter's history of this tumultuous and exciting era introduces us not only to the people involved in its creation--Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Michael Frayn, Jonathan Miller, Alan Bennett, and David Frost--but also their routines and sketches.

          Book Description

Despite being a mediocre actress with less than classic beauty, Theda Bara was one of Hollywood's leading performers in the early years of cinema. Her success was primarily due to Fox Studio's publicity department; they created her image as a screen vamp and used it to titillate the public. And Bara, an ambitious actress who was nearing 30 when she made her first film, enthusiastically played the role designed for her. In real life, Theodosia Goodman bore little resemblance to the vampish Theda Bara character. But the studio-created persona, with the invented name, evil personality and fictional history, was a major star. Though Bara's films were often trite, poorly acted, extravagant and crude, the public packed movie houses and even rioted over her. Bara's film career ended once the public tired of the persona, though she went on to enjoy some success in regional theater. Through contemporary newspaper accounts, film reviews, interviews and other sources, this is a comprehensive account of the life and times of one of Hollywood's first female stars.

          4 out of 5 stars Overlooked.......2000-10-02

Rather like its subject, this book has been unfairly overlooked. Comparisons with Eve Golden's more mainstream "Vamp", published simultaneously, do not entirely work in Golden's favour, however. Whilst Genini clearly lacks Golden's wit and incisive style, his research does fill in a few gaps and missing details, particularly about Bara's activities in her later years. The films themselves are documented well, in chronological order, and Genini has the rare virtue of refraining from discussing the quality of films he has not seen.

One might argue that Bara's personality comes over as somewhat vague, though I wonder if that is not the point. Bara is elusive, and one suspects she was a much better actress than has been credited. In the light of no concrete evidence, Genini skillfully draws the reader to their own conclusions.

Genini is clearly a Bara fan, but his book does not suffer for that. Throughout he remains objective and apart from a few trivial errors, mostly involving dates and chronolgy which are more attributable to the editing, this is an honourable effort. Those who have invested in Eve Golden's book would be well advised to read this to give a different and no less valid perspective.

3 out of 5 stars A quick read about a silent film vamp.......1999-12-16

Theda Bara was a silent screen icon whose meteoric career was over after five years. Mr. Genini has done an admirable job of digging up old magazine and newspaper articles about Ms. Bara. He even interviewed Bara's dentist. However, this book is not nearly as good as Eve Golden's VAMP book on Bara, which was printed the same year. This book has many great publicity photos, but few stills from her films. The book spends little time in describing Bara's films.

The author only viewed Bara's first starring film A FOOL THERE WAS (1914). He doesn't mention until nearly the end of the book that most of Bara's films are missing. However, he overlooked some of the few films that do survive. THE UNCHASTENED WOMAN (1925) has been available on the collector's market for years and EASY LYNNE is available in an archive. He also incorrectly states that MADAME MYSTERY (1926), her last film, is complete -- actually a one-reel albrigement is all that survives. [THE STAIN (1914) was discovered after this book was written].

If you are a big Theda Bara fan, by all means get this book. However, if you want to read an engrossing, well written book on Theda, try Eve Golden's VAMP first.

I'm not familair with the universe this series is created from, but I enjoyed the first one thoroughly. This installment is the worst of the entire series. The charachter reactions are completely unbelievable. Almost all the charachters from the first book are merely bit parts. The plot is full of holes, the reactions and logic of the charachters and their decisions make no sense. The book starts out okay, but by the end you will just want to throw it away and curse yourself for the wasted time.

1 out of 5 stars Thanks, but no thanks Thorarinn........2003-11-30

I am going to review this trilogy as a whole because no one book stands out in my mind as being any better or worse than another. They were all equally terrible.
The three books, Dragonlord of Mystara, Dragonking of Mystara and Dragonlord of Mystara make up the 'Dragonlord Chronicles'. I should have been suspicious from the start given the obvious play upon the immensely popular and infinitely better concieved 'Dragonlance Chronicles' from the same publisher.

These books are set within the Dungeons and Dragons world of Mystara and chart the course of the cliched farm boy orphan of unknown parentage on his meteroic rise to his righteous destiny among the stars.

It could be reviewed in one of two ways, as a fantasy novel in its own right, or as a piece of the Mystara universe. Neither would be flattering. For a fan of the Mystara universe this book is an abomination, totally disregarding the world's established fan base and re-writing the history past, present and future of a much loved world. It adds nothing, nor appears to be derived from much resembling the world the fans know and love.

As a fantasy novel it relies greatly on cliche, we have the stoic Dwarf Fighter, the independant Amazon, the Wise Old Mentor and the Impressionable Do-No-Wrong Orphan Hero-Boy. That is about as far as the characterization goes. After ploughing through the entire trilogy I could tell you little else about the main characters. I could mention that they all 'talk' for the author, the unsurprising advancements of plot are simply revealed all too often in unbelieavable dialogue rather than revealed by events and actions. Likewise the character's thoughts and motivations are never revealed through action but always in a very clumsy monologue fashion. They also often talk in obvious D&D game terms, even going so far as to describe each other by class and level.

The dragons of the books are just awful. I cannot stress this enough. At once described as wise, powerful, majestic beings we then learn that regardless of colour or species they are such a territorial race that if two or more are around each other for very long they degenerate into wild beasts and savagely rip each other apart. This is stressed time and again in the first book, but yet the second two books have literally thousands of dragons on each page and unfortunately this never happens. The dragons are also laughably weak. Our uber-powerful hero, in one memorable moment kills six with a single blow from his sword.

The bad moments are too many list but I will try. The hero is simply impervious to all damage by anything, and can kill anything effortlessly - this does not help to add any dramatic tension whatsoever to the story.

His mysterious origins are really very predictable and boring and I found I could really care less.

An army of several thousand dragons surrounds a city, trying to get to our hero - but they fear him too much to attack! Come on, these are dragons! In the meantime, a couple of allied armies 'sneak' into the besieged city under cover of darkness without the supremely wise and knowledgable dragons noticing.

I could go on, but I will spare you. I am, and ever will be a fan of fantasy novels and the Dungeons and Dragons genre lines. I have read the good, the bad and the indifferent. This trilogy falls way below the bad. It is the dire, the terrible, the abysmal and reallyshould not have been written much less read.

            Thanks but no thanks, Thorarinn.

The whole world is watching! In the past few years, the Internet has given us unprecedented publishing opportunities, and Microsoft has made it easier than ever to reach like-minded souls across the Web with FrontPage, its Web publishing application. If you're new to the world of Web design, FrontPage 2000 for Dummies can walk you through each step of the process with grace and good humor--though you may need to get a more comprehensive reference if you want to explore the intricacies of HTML.

The writing is clear, funny, and well-organized, moving from tool to tool with plenty of tips and tricks crammed in along the way. You learn the secrets of everything from basic file manipulation to multimedia, themes, and image maps. Unfortunately, the writing isn't well-complemented with images; the shortage of screenshots is a serious flaw for visual learners.

The book's accompanying CD-ROM is packed with shareware and trial software: Netscape 4.05, Paintshop Pro, WinZip, and plenty more. You'll also find sample files, bonus chapters, and the URLs mentioned within the text. FrontPage 2000 for Dummies is a good, basic introduction and a refreshing supplement to the often dry text found in other Web publishing books--but even the dumbest FrontPage user will probably need more than this. --Rob Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Absolute Beginner.......2007-06-12

I knew ZERO about Websites before picking up this book. I tried other books, but they were just confusing. This book enabled me to make a website from scratch & get it up & running in a matter of days. I did this for a business, & have received literally hundreds of compliments on it - from total strangers!

2 out of 5 stars Not for dummies.......2007-01-09

I never got past the beginning. Something has been left out of the directions for getting started. I'm sure that advanced users would find this a good reference. But like most text books I've seen, you have to know something about web pages to use the book.

2 out of 5 stars "Fast and Easy" Books are Much Better.......2004-01-27

After reading "Frontpage '98 - Fast and Easy" when I was using that version of the program, I have to say that this book is not up to the task. Information is unnecessarily repeated, sometimes within the same chapter. It has no flow or momentum towards easily completing a web site. And it curiously contains few illustrations and screen shots for a "Dummy" book. I'm going back to the "fast and Easy" series.

1 out of 5 stars Front Page for Dummies 2000 flops!.......2003-10-30

I wanted a book to learn FP 2000, I went straight to the Dummie section. The Dummie proved to be me.
First let me say, I have been creating websites for several years in HTML, so I'm not a novice, but this book frustrated me!
Poorly written, jumps around until you are confused. Skims each subject, nothing in depth here. A lot of important information is skipped, and 2 chapters are on the CD. So, if you want to use them, you have the expense of printing them yourself! The CD is full of outdated links also.
I actually learned more using the tutorial that came with FP 2000, the Dummy book was a complete waste of my limited book funds...

3 out of 5 stars Excellent for the real beginners.......2001-12-23

This book is excellent for someone looking to design a family or personal website. but when it comes to designing a professional looking website it is useless.
For example: When I bought this book I thought it would not only teach me how to put colors on my webpage but also how to pick the right colors that reflect the contents of the webpage... You can learn the information that this book presents with out reading the book. you can just use FrontPage for a couple of hours and you would probably learn more than reading it.
If you want to learn FrontPage 2000 then start with this book, but don't depend on it to design a real professional website.
I can say that it only tells you how to use FrontPage and not how to design a website with FrontPage!
