    Book Description

Slave Labor reprints for the first time the original classic episodes of Metamorphosis Odyssey comic book series from Epic Illustrated. These gorgeous, painted pages, reproduced in black & white, originally appeared in Epic from 1979 to 1982, and introduced audiences to Vance Dreadstar and the other characters whose saga continued in the Dreadstar graphic novel and Epic series in the early eighties. This trade paperback edition will contain additional sketches and other tidbits for fans, plus a new introduction by Jim Starlin.

5 out of 5 stars The origin of a myth.......2007-03-09

I had readed Dreadstar Comics when I was a teenager, but the metamorphosis Odissey did not arrive to Spain, so It was an old score that finally I have been able to set. The comic is very good and I recomed it

4 out of 5 stars Opening chapters of a great story.......2006-08-05

Back in the `70s and early `80s, Epic magazine was one of the leaders in creating a new kind of comics. They featured better art, better stories, and more of everything that a comic reader would want after outgrowing the Super Hero In Tights (S-H-I-nevermind) genre. Steve Gerber's Dreadstar featured in that magazine, which ceased publication long ago. I'm very glad to see Dreadstar back in print.

Osiros is the only planet to stand against the rapacious Zygoteans. Although powerful, the people and resources of Osiros are too small to stand against the star-spanning war machine of the Zygoteans. Although they, too, fall to the slavers and pillagers, the Osirosians hold them off just long enough to set the Zygoteans downfall in motion. The Zyg defeat will come from an earth girl, a powerful but sensitive ape-man, and a delicate beauty from an older, wiser race. They must be guarded until they become that weapon. As unwilling as any of the rest, Vanth Dreadstar becomes their guard.

Despite its generally higher standards, this does fall back on comic-book icons once in a while - that first page, for example, is pure Silver Surfer. No matter, the story is more complex and the characters are more believable than the superhero standard. The artwork is far better, too. Back then, printing technology couldn't put the delicate tones and fine registration onto newsprint that it can now, so Dreadstar's painterly art had to appear in Epic's glossy format. This reproduction loses all of that delicacy, and reduces the original color to black and white. Dreadstar newcomers: you have my sincerest apology. You really deserve better.

The good news, though, is that the original Dreadstar is still available at all. The character was later co-opted into a more pedestrian S-H-I-nevermind kind of comic that I found utterly forgettable. These stories predate that unfortunate collapse. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Needs Color!!.......2003-03-01

First, I would like to remind (for emphasis) this is a black-and-white reissue of the original series that was truly magnificent in color. The black-and-white pages do dampen (for me anyway) a great deal of the exuberant and dramatic quality of the graphics.

Remember the scene in which the aristocratic elite (looking like a cross between medieval nobility and a future techno ruling class) abandon their world and their people to their fates? They file resplendant in their finery into the starships that will carry them to safety while the masses must merely await the inevitable destruction. What a dramatic and interesting portrait. In black-and-white, it is far less compelling.

Metamorphosis Odyssey needed a full-color reprint. More expensive? So be it. A graphic novel by definition depends on the quality of both its graphics and its story. A black-and-white reissue is better than nothing but if saving money was the intent, why bother with the graphics at all?

The story, as a previous reviewer noted, is somewhat disjointed and episodic - which is in keeping with its original serialization within the now defunct Epic magazine. What was interesting for me was not the plot of the story itself so much -a group of survivors of destroyed civilizations band together to resist a tyrannical galactic empire - but Starlin's dramatic and self-consciously epic intent: Akhnaton's sometimes poetic recollection of his people's doomed struggle with the enemy ("the initial encounter lasted 500 years...") contrasts with the more blunt determination of his "disciples" to seek immediate vengeance.

The style of Metamorphosis Odyssey is bleaker, darker, and less humorous than most (but not all) of the series. One reviewer noted that it "had nothing to do with what follows" and is not as good as comic series that followed. I think he's right and wrong. I agree that after Metamorphosis Odyssey (with notable exceptions) the series adopted a different style and tone. It became more of generic comic book both in terms of graphics and storyline.

However, I think that Metamorphosis Odyssey is superior to its successors. Whereas the comic series (was it Marvel that published them?)reminds me more of a television series in which every week something dramatic happens but you know there's always a new crisis next week equally big (like, for example, X-Files or Buffy), MO gave the feeling that this was it, this was THE story and it begins and ends here.

It's similar to the difference between the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and a Saturday morning Tolkien cartoon series where the ring has been destroyed and now the threat this week is...

Summary: A black-and-white reissue that only whets the appetite. Fans of the comic might not enjoy Dreadstar as much or at all. I enjoy both as much as I did when I was thirteen.

2 out of 5 stars An ambitious, but weak, effort............2001-10-30

I'm a big fan of Jim Starlin, and I have fond memories of reading the Dreadstar series when I was a young teen. So it was with great anticipation that I read (for the first time) Dreadstar Volume One: The Metamorphosis Odyssey.

Boy was I let down....This is a preachy mess that has NOTHING to do with the series that followed it. We follow a group of characters that are nothing more than empty shells, as they fight a race of bad guys that are never given any substance either.

Vanth Dreadstar himself is an obnoxious creep, so there is NO ONE to feel for in this book.....all you can do is be dragged along for a quest that takes Millions of years to complete, and then is rendered completely moot at the end. The saving grace is that the last few pages manage to tie this mess up, and set up the better stories that followed.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not the best.......2001-10-30

I'm a long-time graphic novel fan, appreciate the work that goes into the drawing of a story and, certainly, Jim Starlin's black and white renderings are nicely drawn and detailed (although I found the overall darkness rather tedious). It's in the story telling itself that I have problems. I have all three books in the series and they're all the same- the story is very choppy in it's continuity. I don't mind characters being introduced suddenly and then explained in flashback format, that's cool; but there are leaps in plot development that make the action seem very stilted and I never get the feeling that any of the characters have any depth to them. The angst of the protagonists remains superficial and the supporting characters never seem to do anything more than fill in plot movement. That said, the books are still enjoyable for the art work and I look forward to seeing what Mr. Starlin comes up with in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Ranking as high as any of Keillor's stories.......2001-01-27

The four stories of "Love", are quite simply genius, capturing the perfect balance between humor and poignancy. "Truckstop" is as good a story as Keillor has ever come up with, profiling the events both before and after Florian Krebsbach leaves his wife Myrtle at a truckstop. "Uncle Al's gift" provide side splitting humor as well as an excellent moral. "Rotten Apples" gives us another insight from Keillor into a child's weord, wonderful mind. And "The Wise Men" provides a glimpse into the difficulties of being a minister, especially at Christmastime. Personally, I would recommend that those considering buying this tape buy the whole "More News From Lake Wobegone" series, but if you're going to buy just one cassette, this is the one!

Nobody tells Fred C. Dobbs what to do, except maybe Miss Moviehearts.

Advice From the Movies goes a long way in proving that most problems in life can be solved by a scene from a movie. A delightful book to be enjoyed by anyone who has ever referred to a movie to make a point.

    Dear Miss Moviehearts,

My husband is more passionate about his Porsche than about me. What can I do?

    Neglected

    Dear Neglected,

Come back as his car. If Perry King could come back as Ellen Barkin in "Switch" and Patrick Swayze could come back as a ghost in "Ghost," then you can certainly come back as a 1965 Porsche.

The editor of Apocalypse Culture returns with another collection of anti-essays of his own authorship, plus a few from his disgruntled friends. Not even sacrilege is sacred to Adam Parfrey as he aims his poison pen at targets ranging from Andrea Dworkin to G.G. Allin. Articles on the sex lives of freaks, amputees, and Nazis are sure to offend someone you know, and they're oddly compelling reading as well. In fact, there's not a clunker in this volume of politically astute if overly nasty pieces. Not to be missed are the interesting series of articles on the militia movement and the Oklahoma City bombing, which defy easy categorization on the standard political chart by attacking the media's biases as well as the narrowness of the militia movements.Cult Rapture is fine reading for a cozy night around a post-nuclear hell pit.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading but not as good as the Apocalypse Culture books.......2007-03-22

This is similar to (although not as good as) the Apocalypse Culture books where you have a collection of compiled articles on subjects or people that are from the fringes of mainstream belief.

Overall this was worth reading but one big annoyance is the condescending, smirking attitude Parfrey has towards some, if not most, of the people and subjects being discussed. This attitude seems to be a very common thing that west coast and Jewish types (Parfrey is both) have towards anybody that doesn't share their world view. Which is really funny because one of the essays in this, "How to Frame a Patriot", does a great job of pointing out how a writer can subtly twist words around in order to defame the person they are writing about. I don't want to seem like I'm being too hard on Parfrey though because I enjoy a lot of his work and think his Feral House is argueably the best publishing house going right now.

    5 out of 5 stars Fearless.......2001-05-23

Where other reporters are afraid of letting their opinions be known, Adam Parfrey, in his exploration of the fringes of society, is fearless. At times he does seem a bit mean, but come on, he is printing what everyone is thinking! Included in this collection are tongue-in-cheek reports on women sexually obsessed with Elvis, the history of big-eyed waif velvet paintings, the Unarians (who prophesized that the Space Brothers would land in their UFOs and save the world in 2000 -- are they still around?), Bo Gritz (the man who Rambo is based upon) and, yes, a group that encourages the empowerment of the handicapped through sex. There are other articles on various charlatans and conspiracy theories, including an excellent one on Waco (Fact: did you know that every ATF agent killed at Waco worked as security for Bill Clinton while he was governor?!?). My personal favourite is an interview with Shelby Downard, my all-time favourite "paranoid" (I can't wait until his collected works are released in 2002 by Feral House!).

5 out of 5 stars Being the source of "May I Touch Your Scar", I'd say Parfey.......1998-03-09

I am David Brandenburger. My (deceased now) wife & I are the sources/subjects of "May I Touch Your Scar", in this book. Parfey makes some stuff up, takes things people said, either out of context, or alters their words to suit his own pervertions of thought. While sex INSTRUCTION was a small part of what we taught people (adults only), it was NOT our main focus. To refer to us as, "a sex cult for cripples" is ludicrious. Please contact me for further information if anyone is interested. E-mail to irhp@phonl.com a Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars A melange of counter-culture freaks and other oddities........1997-01-04

One of the best things about Adam Parfrey's articles are the subtle sarcasm that abounds. While one man recounts his ardour for Russian mail-order brides, Parfrey, without shame reveals his opinion of this man as a travesty. Not all the subjects in this collection of articles are treated as rudely though. Parfrey investigates anything weird from millenialists to congenital human oddities with an open-mind. Photographs adorn the articles, making this book more alive in the reality of the strange.

All supplied material for review of this book said it was new and up to date but did not give the version number of Open Office that was covered. When I received the book I was frustrated and well into it when I found it was for version 1.1. The Open Office I have is 2.2. The data base portion is not even mentioned in this book. I found that I wasted a lot of time. If any of these books do not show the version number of the program they are working with I would not buy them!

4 out of 5 stars good book .......2007-01-05

Pretty much of a getting started but does talk about many important points.
Though I am very skilled in Excel, Open office is still irritating.
        I would buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, but not as in depth as I would like........2005-09-02

The book covers the major aspects of the software suite, but it really doesn't get into the details of the programs. For that, I recommend a Dummies book on the Microsoft version, since they don't have an in-depth book on the OpenOffice.org version of the software applications. For what it is, an overview of the suite, it is very good. I highly recommend it as a fantastic starting point. I paid a paltry $7 for the book, delivered. How can you go wrong with a price like that? Truth be told, I believe it would have been worth the cover price of $24.99. It is an excellent book to start with, but you'll want to dig deeper after you make it through this book. I hope the authors will consider making full-blown Dummies books for Impress/Presentation, and Calc/Spreadsheet, and the Writer/Text Document applications, too.

I highly recommend OpenOffice.org to all non-profit organizations, as well as for-profit companies: save yourselves $200-$500, per computer, along with the upgrade/compatibility issues, and dump Microsoft. You will be glad you did. Cheers!
