    Book Description

Differing provisions in bilateral tax treaties lead to undesired consequences. Tax administrations expend considerable energy combating tax structures devised by taxpayers and their advisers in an attempt to use these differences to their advantage. This battle uselessly engages the resources of both enterprises and tax authorities. The advantages and disadvantages of multilateral tax treaties have been debated for many years. While some multilateral tax treaties have been concluded at regional levels, the concept has yet to gain wide acceptance. Multilateral Tax Treaties results from a research project conducted at the Department for Austrian and International Tax Law at the University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna. The project sought to produce a draft multilateral tax treaty modeled on the OECD Model Income Tax Convention while examining in detail difficulties that arise in connection with the multilateralisation of the OECD Model. The expert papers also present a thorough analysis of the arguments for and against the conclusion of a multilateral tax treaty and of the various European law issues that arise in this context. Multilateral Tax Treaties provides incisive and thought-provoking reading for the international tax specialist and generates further discussion on this important topic.

        Product Description

In the midst of Izrador's tyranny and death, one rough-and-tumble port city beats the dark lord at his own game: Baden’s Bluff, the center of an underground resistance for all foes of evil. In Midnight more than in any other world, a place of sanctuary is needed to continue the fight. This sourcebook for Baden’s Bluff is appropriate for players looking for organizations to join, for new equipment and feats designed to evade the magehunters and assassins of the dark lord, and for new classes that allow PCs to bring the fight to the treacherous legates on their own battleground of intrigue and intimidation. DMs will find a wealth of setting material that describes Baden’s Bluff as both a place of refuge for their campaign’s heroes, as well as one of adventure and danger on the dark streets and the sewers below. Baden’s Bluff is an ember of hope, as well as a culling ground, for those who try to survive under the shadow.

5 out of 5 stars The Bluff is on!.......2007-07-08

Under the Shadow is another supplement for the excellent dark fantasy setting Midnight (by FFG), where the Dark God Izrador, the only God on the world, has finally managed to conquer most of the known lands with his forces and slowly crushes every last bit of resistance out of those people who survived. Still, there are those who resist, and Resistance, just as Evil, has many faces. Under the Shadow takes a close look at one of the resistance hot spot, the city of Baden's Bluff.

The cover art gives us a good glimpse into what is happening in Baden's Bluff: the resistance is there following every move, and the forces of the Shadow, knowing that the resistance is there, moves carefully and usually in force. The interior art is just as good: dark and somber while giving you a good idea of what the city is like and how the various forces in play interact with it and one another.

        The book has four chapters:

Chapter 1 describes in detail the different areas of the city providing a map for each area. Most maps do not have more than three areas or buildings signaled out, but those that are, are very detailed with a look into their history as well as the mandatory current information of its importance. Some even have maps of the buildings added to them. A great deal of detail is also given to the description of each area of the city including people you might meet walking the streets, smells, and sounds. It really puts you into the mood of the city and gives the DM great imagery he can communicate to the players. All the places described are extremely interesting, and as usual in a Midnight book, each will give you enough ideas to start several adventures. My favorite place is the Hallow.

Chapter 2 leaves Baden's Bluff and explores the surrounding area: from the south going Road of Ruin with its keeps, to the dreary Trollskarl forest, to the Plague Hills. All these great places (and more) are again described colorfully providing great scenery for players to run around in, as well as supplying adventure ideas galore.

Chapter 3 goes into the gut of Baden's Bluff with the descriptions of the various power, factions, and organizations, from the Badens to the Legate, to the Bastard Baden and his court, and all that is between (or inside). The lines sometime blur between the resistance and the Shadow's forces, providing a great places for DM's and players that like intrigue, diplomacy, and cloak and dagger negotiations.

Chapter 4 describes all the important (and some not so important seeming) personalities of Badden's Bluff including stat blocks, personalities and motivations, all complementing and expanding on what has already been discussed in the previous chapter.

Finally the Appendix includes a new PrC: the Visionary; four new feats, and a new Fell template for those that have drowned near the salty waters of Baden's Bluff, the Brine Ungral.

This book has the same high standards as all other Midnight books: well written description, interesting locations, great NPC for your party to encounter, the art is just fitting, and ideas for new adventures are plenty.

If you plan to have your party spend some time in Baden's Bluff, or if you want to insert some city adventures with plenty of intrigue and diplomacy (and backstabbing), this is the thing to get.

More Laughter in Appalachia, their fourth collection of Southern mountain humor, may well be their funniest and most comprehensive collection to date. These topics are linked together through the key thread of the role of, or absence of law, providing a snapshot of important work in the burgeoning field of law and popular culture. The book includes important theoretical and truly innovative and relevant material that will enliven and inform a legal audience, and will be of interest to a far wider audience.

Stephen Poole spends worthwhile time laying down the basics, which well serves readers seeking varying degrees of help. For those who want to win with minimum assistance, the first two chapters merely explain the interface and the equipment inside the game. Strategic tips begin in chapter three. The next eight chapters are devoted to detailed walk-throughs of each mission. The cheat codes and Easter eggs are all there in chapter 14. But even die-hard do-it-yourselfers should read the chapter 13 advice on optimizing game play, even if only to assure that their system is up to the game.

                          Book Description

Fast Track to MDX (for SQL Server 2000) Second Edition Mark Whitehorn, Robert Zare and Mosha Pasumansky

OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) is the most powerful Business Intelligence tool currently available and Microsoft's Analysis Manager makes OLAP cubes incredibly easy to build and deploy. However the real power of OLAP lies in its ability to help you solve real-life business problems; to release that power you need to use the language that controls the cubes and allows them to be queried. That language is MDX (Multi Dimensional eXpressions).

Fast Track to MDX gives you all the necessary background to let you write useful, powerful MDX expressions and introduces the most frequently used MDX functions and constructs. No prior knowledge is assumed and examples are used throughout the book to rapidly develop your MDX skills to the point where you can solve real business problems.

Mark Whitehorn, co-author of the best-selling Inside Relational Databases, is renowned for his knowledge of database systems and the lucidity of his writing. Robert Zare is a Program Manager for Analysis Services at Microsoft: his inspiring talks on MDX sowed the seeds from which this book grew. Mosha Pasumansky was one of the authors of the OLEDB for OLAP specification that defined the MDX language and later he was the developer in charge of the first implementation of MDX in the Microsoft OLAP Services 7.0 product. He is currently the development lead of the Analysis Services engine team.

Second Edition – It was the clarity, precision and sheer readability of the first edition that made it a best-seller. With that firmly in mind the authors have left the original 18 chapters intact (apart from minor updates); meaning that the second edition remains the best introduction to MDX for SQL Server 2000 that is available. What they have done is to add three brand new chapters. These introduce the topic of recursion in MDX, walk the reader through the process of creating recursive expressions and finally demonstrate how recursion can be used to effectively solve a series of business problems.

Forward by Amir Netz, Product Unit Manager, SQL Server – Analysis Services at Microsoft.

A CD containing examples from within the book, and a time-limited version of ProClarity, is included.

2 out of 5 stars Lot of fluff, Uneven, Unfocused.......2007-09-21

I was already quite familiar with SQL and I bought this book to understand what MDX was about. I was sorely disappointed.

If you are suspicious of books that are full of half a page screen shots of navigating menus and changing settings, your suspicions would be well-founded in this case. I daresay 40% of the book consists of screen shots most of which could easily have been replaced by single sentence descriptions (or half sentence ones.)

If you raise your eyebrows seeing a 'chapter' titled "Server side color coding" whose whole *eight* pages collapse to four when excluding screen shots, then this book is not for you. No wonder that, despite being close to three hundred pages long, the book is an extremely quick read.

There's a lot of fluff, like frequent quotes (yes, in italics, separated from the text with whitespace) from the authors (I guess, because they are rarely attributed), spread around like pearls of wisdom pointing out the blinding obvious. I did not know that quoting from yourself (unless you are Einstein) was good writing. Actually, why not remove the quotes and just get on with?

There is very little formal introduction to concepts, for example, the syntax of MDX queries is never discussed. I guess you are supposed to derive it from looking at examples. Needless to say, the book is as far from comprehensive as it is humanly possible.

All in all, I did not find this book a useful introduction to MDX. I will have to find a better book for that.

3 out of 5 stars Does not support SQL Server 2005.......2007-09-05

Only giving it 3 stars because it's outdated. Did not notice before I bought that it covers SQL Server 2000 only. For a 2nd edition published in 2006, assumed it would cover SSAS 2005.

Overall, the approach is good, with a clear explanation of the basics and building useful elements by starting simple and incrementally adding.

But if you have 2005, there are serious drawbacks. The samples cannot be loaded into 2005. And, among other things, the syntax for time dimensions is incorrect. Apparently hierarchy names did not have to be specified in 2000, but do in 2005.

If you're aware of lack of 2005 support, it still might be worth it. At least you'll do less head scratching than I did.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up.......2007-06-27

I highly recommend this book. I've been using the MDX generated from Proclarity without really understanding it. Now it's making sense. I couldn't have taught myself, reading a function reference, the concepts the authors makes real.

I think this is the most pleasant read I've ever had with a technical book. At the same time, I've already solved a couple of real world problems from what I've learned in the text.

I usually don't feel compelled to submit a review, but I want to recommend this book. I'm an experienced database application developer, but I'm new to Analysis Services and MDX. If you match that profile, you'll benefit from this book.

It's written for AS 2000. I wish it were written for 2005, but it I don't think it makes that much difference.

4 out of 5 stars Fast Track to MDX.......2007-05-12

Very good learning tool. The only problem that I has was the examples were for a previous release of SQL Server. I am on 2005 and examples will not load into 2005. The 2005 book was not released yet. Went to the web and found compatible examples.

                          4 out of 5 stars Easy read.......2007-03-19

This book was a much easier read and is fairly easy to much easier to follow vs. MDX Solutions (my first purchase). I am a novice at MDX or any other code for that matter, for beginnners this is a good book to start with.
