Customer Reviews:
LEARNING OPENING TACTICS is great - this book does have some drawbacks.......2006-07-27
There is probably nothing more effective to get results in practical play than to know the traps and tactics you will find in the openings you use. Therefore, the idea behind this book is excellent.
It covers 300 different opening traps in many openings. No problem them there. The problems are as follows,
a. it is in english descriptive notation.
b. it provides very little analysis and in many cases ignors telling you the reasons and improvements when there is a ? or a ?? given.
c. There are mistakes in the analysis.
This book will still be useful in helping you improve your knowledge of opening traps but which I feel is important, but this is not even close to being the best opening traps book.
Good but outdated and could use more analysis.......2006-07-27
Getting some books on opening traps is perhaps one of the best moves any serious chess player should take. I like that there are a lot of traps, but the drawback is this book is older than the hills so considering getting a more up to date book on opening traps in addition is what I would suggest.
The traps in this book are arranged by type of opening. This makes zooming in to the traps in the openings you play easy with the drawback as mentioned, it may not have the modern variation you use. The tactics in these openings will be helpful for everyone though. Most people should improve their tactics anyway.
If I was writing this book I could also improve it by doing more analysis on the moves before the trap itself. Notes are sparse leaving you wondering what should have been played instead of the move given a question mark.
Improve your openings/improve your tactics.......2006-05-15
WINNING CHESS TRAPS is a great way to improve your openings. You will not just learn opening lines, but the most common tactics and mistakes found in the openings.
The three hundred traps are organized by opening type with a diagram covering the most critical part of each trap. You get one entire trap per page.
This book gives you a good way of studying tactics that are most likely to happen in actual games. This is extremely helpful to gain better results in your play.
Since the book wasnot written recently there are some newer openings not covered and there is not a lot of detail in the analysis, but not much explaning needed in many cases anyway.
A good opening trap book (or two) will do most players a world of good!
Helps improve openings to a degree - some weaknesses.......2005-09-05
Overall the idea of organizing by opening the most common traps is a very good one. This is exactly what "Winning Chess Traps" does.
As a 1500 rated player I found some series weaknesses in the book (which could be improved in an updated edition),
a. The book was written in the 40's and not updated. Opening styles and theory have changed, yet the books hasn't been updated.
b. There are many mistakes in the analysis with better moves not being shown when they should be.
c. Overall, it doesn't go into much detail when important concepts should be explained.
d. It only provides one diagram per game making it difficult for lower rated players to follow without the use of a board.
e. It is in the old Descriptive type of notation.
However, in spite of these weaknesses it is worthwhile having in your chess library, and when used with solid opening books and/or a data base then the mistakes are found.
As said and worth repeating, an updated book on traps using this book's concept without these weaknesses should be published.
Essential book for studying any opening........2003-05-17
This is a great book, with 300 traps, mostly 10-15 move games, though likely continuations are sometimes given beyond 20 moves.
You can use this book in several different ways.
A) Play through the games. They are much easier to understand than modern grandmaster games. In this way, it's similar to Reinfeld's Great Short Games of the Chess Masters, another great book. You'll see tactics in motion, and you can learn as if by osmosis.
B) Use the diagrams as tactics drills. Each diagram represents the state of the game immediately following a blunder (marked in the game by "?"). Look for the refutation. Great practice! In this way, it is similar to the Pandolfini trap books, but Chernev's traps are typically a bit more subtle.
C) When learning a new opening variation, look it up in this book first to see the simplest traps. Then to see deeper traps, look it up in Burgess's Quickest Chess Victories of All Time, another great book. The two books have very little overlap, surprisingly. I sometimes copy a line from one to the other.
Strengths:
* Well-indexed (similar to Burgess above). Table of contents lists major openings. Alphabetical index lists openings and a fair number of variations. Move index allows you to look up games based on the first 2-3 moves.
* Correspondence between diagram and moves is obvious. (Some books make you scratch your head to figure out which move was just played.)
* Wide audience. Advanced-beginner level, but even a master must be prepared for the traps in his own openings.
* Text explanation next to diagrams.
* One trap per page.
* Excellent use of fonts for different types of info.
* Footnoted light annotation, rather than in-line clutter.
* Broad coverage, not just king-pawn openings. Pandolfini covers only a handful of queen-pawn openings in The Winning Way. Here, Chernev has 89, plus a few other tries.
* Blunders for both sides of the board. Some authors concentrate on White's point-of-view. Here, Black wins about a third of the games.
Weaknesses:
* Diagrams are old-style, but at least they are dark enough. (Some old re-prints are way too light.)
* Usually, the diagram is at a logical location, either following the blunder, or one move later when the blunder was really tough to notice. But sometimes the diagram precedes the blunder, which can be annoying when you're just doing tactical drills.
* Descriptive notation, a minor weakness for this sort of book.
Overall, it's hard to improve. A really great book.

Customer Reviews:
Improve both your knowledge of tactics and ideas behind the openings simultaneously! .......2006-11-08
In General about Trap Books: Books on chess traps should be an excellent way to learn tactics and openings at the same time. This is because you see all of the moves leading up to the actual tactic being employed (unlike books that give a diagram and the tactic starts from there). You can learn important ideas in specific openings also knowing how to avoid traps as well as well as executing them.
"Winning Chess Traps for Juniors": Has 64 short games with often numerous traps within a single game (unlike numerous other trap books that will create separate traps and use up space for nothing). They are arranged by type of opening (openings can be looked up quickly in the table of contents). The analysis is very accurate (I have computer checked the analysis and wow! Perfect in every respect, unlike some of the other traps and tactic books I have seen that contain faulty analysis). There are a nice variety of openings containing your most common type of traps and tactics. There is an analysis of moves leading up to the trap (unlike numerous trap books I have seen that have most if not all of the analysis when the trap is reached) and where the player went wrong along with the improvement is pointed out. This book fits in well as part of a series by the author with material being consistant (however, you don't need the author's other books to get full use of this book as this does just find as a stand-alone book).
Who this book is for: Written is easy to understand language, it is at about a fourth or fifth grade reading level. If you are an adult, don't let the easy language snub this book - it is perfect for adults! Once you know the very basics of chess (know how the pieces move, and have just been introduced to the ideas behind the openings) this book becomes very useful. However, it contains analysis that an advanced beginner or intermediate player will very extremely useful.
A sick mind wrote this book!.......2006-10-15
Author Robert Snyder plead guilt to charges of molesting one of his former students! (I also like how he ripped of the title of Chernev's classic book!)
One of the best ways to learn tactics and even a 3rd grader can use it!.......2006-09-21
I just got this book (in the new LARGE PRINT edition that is exactly the same book, except it is super-sized and is like a big workbook) and have not been able to put it down! Instead of just being given a position and trying to find the solution like lots of tactics books, in this book you get to see everything that happened before the tactics happen. This book also tells the ideas behind the moves and you are learning about the openings that have the tactics. You are asked to "find the best move" and there are plenty of diagrams to make it easy to follow along. You can use a sheet of paper to cover up the next moves so you do not accidentally see the answer. This is a fun book and I think it is one of the best ways to learn tactics and improve your understanding of the ideas behind the openings.
Effective way to IMPROVE TACTICS and IMPROVE OPENING KNOWLEDGE: My favorite book on Opening Traps and Tactics.......2006-09-01
I have finally found a book on opening traps that gives an explanation of the ideas behind the moves from the very beginning of the game (covering ideas behind the openings) to the end of the tactical trap. No cheap tricks! Good, solid analysis is given for both common and less common openings (very well rounded when it comes to having a variety of different openings).
You will learn the important tactics found in the opening such as, Legal's Mate, analysis of Philidor's Legecy, Noah's Arc Trap, Classic Bishop Sacrifice, Poisoned Pawn, Double Rook Sacrifice, with all of the usual forks, pins, skewers, and much, much more. Seeing the moves leading up to the tactics makes this a more effective way to learn traps and tactics than a book that has just diagrams with problems to work on. Within the sixty four short games there are actually hundreds of traps covered. The reasons why a weak move is weak and what should have been played in its place is explained. You have detailed analysis!
This is a book for any age. It is good for a beginner who has perhaps read an introductory book and now wants to learn tactics and openings. I also would recommend it for intermediate players or for chess teachers to use as material with students. Throughout the book the reader is asked to find the best move at critical points (makes it a fun challenge).
The traps are organized by type of opening with a good table of contents allowing you to quickly find different tactics you might be looking for or to focus on a specific opening. Where a lot of detail is covered in one of the author's other books the reader is told which other book and where it can be found. Most traps average 2-3 pages. This is a solid book with lots of material that is made clear and easy to understand. There are nearly 400 diagrams making so that an intermediate player can usually follow without a board.
I give this book my highest recommendation!
FANTASTIC MINI-LESSONS for a classroom use by CHESS TEACHERS or STUDENTS on their own........2006-08-06
As a chess teacher (and tournament player) who has been teaching grades 3 through 8 in local schools "Winning Chess Traps for Juniors" has been a lot awaited book.
When given a short period of about 20 to 25 minutes for instruction a chess teacher needs to maximize the use of time with the most efficient way to teach a variety of important ideas to the students. With this book I can cover the most important tactics along with teaching opening concepts at the same time - kill two birds with one stone! The students like being shown how a tactic is reached before it is executed! So, here we go with these 64 mini-lessons (each often containing many tactics and traps on the side - clearly pointed out) that the students enjoy.
This book has a nice lay-out making it easy to read. The language is clear (I certainly feel than an upper level elementary school student could easily understand the reading level). The games being are in order of openings with the main theme shown in the title (also covered in the table of contents). Therefore, a teacher (or student) can select games based on type of opening or type of trap/tactic and find them quickly. The 196 pages contain a lot of extremely useful information. There is a nice variety of openings (1. e4, 1.d4 and others) without an over emphasis on any one type.
The level of this book is ideal for children or adults who are just past having grasped the basic rules and maybe know some very basic strategy, right on up to the average tournament player. Because of the material being covered and the way it is presented this book is for beginning players rated from 500 up to intermediate players rated 1600.
I have seen most of the other books on chess traps. None of them provide the detail and quality of analysis found in this book (and most others are not up to date). I also have found going through a short game containing a tactic to be a far superior way of providing instruction as opposed to using a book that only has the tactic, but not how it was set up.
I am looking at this book from a "chess teacher's" point of view and highly recommend it for anyone running a chess class or for students of all ages who want to simultaneously improve their knowledge of tactics and openings.

Book Description
Lasker's Combination is the sacrifice of both Bishops, a destructive assault upon the enemy King's castled position. Few tactical motifs impress so powerfully as this legacy of the 2nd world champion. Indeed, when Lasker used his Bishops like a wrecking-ball to demolish Bauer's Kingside in their famous encounter, this stunning double sacrifice was thought to be a magical accident, or one-of-a-kind wizardry only gods might perform. Yet here, in volume four of The Tactician's Handbook, we discover that the Aunlucky- Bauer merely succumbed to the iron laws of chess. Here Charushin demonstrates that Lasker's Combination is simply another technique, an element of tactical play - and one that can be mastered! Game after game reveal the inner workings of this remarkable attacking method, classified and richly annotated in Charushin's inimitable style.
The Tactician's Handbook offers a solid foundation of knowledge about the tactics of chess, the basis for a higher understanding of chess combinations. Now players can examine the separate building blocks of combinational play (the mechanics of attack!) in short, focused steps. Each volume is devoted to a single and memorable pattern, illustrated by hundreds of real-world examples. Readers can immediately apply the skills learned here, mixing and matching these A tactical templates into their own games. For example, note how often Alekhine's Block (volume one) is seen as part of Lasker's two-Bishop sacrifice! Lasker's Combination establishes Charushin as an original and thought-provoking teacher, and The Tactician's Handbook as a practical, common sense battle plan for the middlegame in chess.
The Tactician's Handbook Series:
Alekhine's Block, Combination Cross, Mitrofanov's Deflection, Lasker's Combination
Customer Reviews:
For it's purpose, this book is excellent. But..........2006-02-06
Charushin wrote this book to give examples of, and to analyze, the double-bishop sacrifice which he names Lasker's Combination after this motif's most famous game. IN THIS CONTEXT the book is excellent: he examines "Canonical" Combinations (1.Bxh7+! Kxh7 2.Qh5+ Kg8 3.Bxg7!!, etc.). "Shortened" Combinations (1.Bxh7+! Kxh7 2.Bxg7!!, etc.), "Lengthened" Combinations (1.Bxh7+! Kxh7 2._____ 3._____ 4.Bxg7!!), etc. I think you get the idea.
Clearly, this is not a book for a beginner (I am a Class "A" player). Also, this certainly should not be your one-volume attacking guide! It is a specialized work, and examines a combination that admittedly does not appear very often.
Especially if you play systems such as the Colle-Zukertort with White (with one bishop on the a1-h8 diagonal, and the other on the b1-h7 diagonal) or similar set-ups as Black, this may be quite a good purchase. I recommend it anyway because it adds one more arrow to your attacking quiver.
When it comes to thinking out of the box, consider Charushin........2005-08-19
I have studied all five of Charushin's Tactician's Handbooks and this one is my favorite. In the introduction, there's a quote from Saviely Tartakower that alludes to the concept of, "What you've learned is safe is, in fact, not safe, so you still have to keep your guard up" (my words). This book does a wonderful job of teaching Lasker's Combination and you should also look at it as Lasker's Principle. You do have to practice it through actual play over the board. I've noticed that more experienced players tend to fianchetto when they see the King's Bishop getting posted, but you have to remember this is a strong attack being set up. I have won a few games using this tactic (of which you do have to know cold the certain nuances) and have enjoyed watching the expression of my opponent go from consternation to great concern as he tries to buckle down and plan a winning counter. To be honest, I have also lost quite a few games in attempting this tactic; you must practice it. However, losses notwithstanding, the training you undergo as you proceed through this book really gets you to think in such a different way even if your opponent becomes successful in making you do someting else. Lasker's Combination is an attack that, in most cases, has to be set up specifically, but there are very jaw-dropping alternatives that come from seeing Lasker's Principle (my words).
I also just love how Charushin shares with the reader his own story of chess in his life at the beginning of the book. This book has the most "over-the-shoulder" training from Charushin compared to his other books. It is a veritable eye-opener that makes you think outside the box.
Customer Reviews:
Clear and useful.......2007-03-24
XML Schema can be really confusing but this book has made it much more clear to me. In particular, I muddled through my project never really understanding things like namespaces and elementFormDefault and weirdnesses like why complex types can have simple content, until I decided to sit down and read this book. Now I feel like I've got a handle on how these things work, plus it made me realize that XML Schema has a lot more features I didn't even know about. The chapter on extensibility was a bonus because it compared and contrasted some of these advanced features and gave me a better idea when to use them. The index is good, too - which makes it easy to use as a reference.
Great Reference Book.......2007-03-22
This book was very helpful in getting me up to speed with XML Schema. It was written well and I have provided the added detail I needed to go above and beyond up at work. Priscilla's Walmsley's extensive experience is conveyed well in the book and has proven to be a great resource.
A Useful companion to the official standard.......2007-01-26
Imagine yourself sitting in front of the formal w3c standard(s) and trying to read it cover to cover...
I tried that and it is very hard, boring, and very unproductive.
Now, try to read it with this book as a companion -- you will find yourself understanding everything on the spot.
There are a lot of useful examples and explanations which are (in my opinion) missing from the standard's text. This is what makes this book so useful.
Also, the organization of the book makes it very easy to locate information you need and to use it as a reference book.
Trying to understand the fine details of the XML Schema standard and the capabilities of XML Schema? Trying to implement an XML parser or an XML validator? If so -- you will probably appreciate this book and will probably use it a lot!
Even now, several years later, I sill find it useful and revealing.
My Schema Reference Book.......2006-06-09
Walmsley's book is the one I go to as the reference for W3C Schema. It is clear and very accurate and reliable. I find the examples relevant and helpful.
I had to chuckle at a previous review that couldn't understand why something was found in multiple places. Well perhaps it is used in several places. I would be happy that the index was thorough. Schema is a somewhat complicated language but Walmsley provides transparency and order.
I recommend this book to my clients and in classes I teach on XML and Schema regulalrly.
Awful as reference.......2006-06-08
Since all other reviews are very positive, I'm here to offer a different opinion.
I've had this book for over a year now, and I barely use it. Each time I attempt to find something useful in it, the information is scattered over the entire book making it extremely difficult to understand.
For example, right now I'm looking up the "ref" attribute, and according to the index, it appears on 7 different locations throughout the book, each portion shorter than 1 page. Also, I have seen many tables scattered throughout with exact same information, or one or two differing field values, making it very confusing to understand which table is doing what.
And at over 500 pages long, there is a large amount of filler information in this book.
Is this book "definitive"? It looks like it is. Is this book usable? Absolutely not. This is one of the worst investments I've made in computer books.
And there is a place about strings in the book where it differs from the official W3C specs.
