Book Description
The gripping inside story of the biggest mass movement in British history, which at its peak involved over 17 million people. Using a combination of photos, text, and graphics, and drawing from the voices of activists and non-payers, it describes the everyday organization of local anti-poll tax groups and chronicles the demonstrations and riots leading up to the battle of Trafalgar. It shows how the courts were blocked, the bailiffs resisted, and the Poll Tax destroyed. The final chapter draws from our experience to present a radically new vision of change from below.
Danny Burns was secretary of the Avon Federation of anti-Poll Tax Unions and coordinated the campaign in the South West. He was also a nonaligned member of the All-Britain Federation national committee.

Book Description
Pat Oliphant's razor-sharp editorial cartoons have skewered the denizens of Congress for more than 25 years. Now, in this companion volume to an exhibit of his work, he is honored for his art in the very repository for that illustrious body: The Library of Congress. Oliphant's Anthem will catalog the 60 drawings, sculptures, and various art media that will be exhibited as a special tribute in March of 1998 in the Library of Congress. Interviews with the artist througout the book will highlight his thoughts, concerns, and considerations as he has created this impressive body of work.

The art and science of "stirring up the animals" .......2005-09-30
Pat Oliphant is one of my favorite political cartoonists and this is among the best of several collections of his work. What to say? Oliphant's Anthem is the companion volume to an exhibition at the Library of Congress (in 1998) which commemorated his art. It provides graphic and compelling illustrations of his reactions to a period which extends from the Viet Nam War until the Clinton administration. The collection includes 60 drawings, sculptures, and various art media which have been added to the Library's permanent collection. In the Preface, James H. Billington observes that the Library of Congress is pleased "to add Pat Oliphant's name to the pantheon of great political artists represented in our holdings and proud to contribute, through this exhibition and publication, new information about a creator whose ideas, accomplishments, and art will certainly endure." Credit Sara Day with gathering and then editing the material provided in this volume.
That said, and with all due respect to those who praise Oliphant's art, it requires no explication. It speaks for itself and does so with a visual power and eloquence which I (at least) am unable to describe. So, what would be appropriate to share in a brief commentary such as this? First, that Oliphant's best work immediately seizes one's attention (as does Picasso's Guernica and Munch's The Scream) and the viewer either "gets it" or doesn't. Also, he captures in each drawing and in each sculpture the essence of his subject (as he perceives it) and challenges those who view it to absorb and digest the implications of what he offers. Finally, he communicates his sense of rage in response to what he views as (for lack of a better term) "man's inhumanity to man." Even as he expresses anger, dismay, frustration, and impatience, he never indicates that he has lost all hope that various inhumanities can be eliminated while insisting that none should be tolerated.
Of special interest to me is Harry Katz's interview of Oliphant on pages 13-78, accompanied by relevant illustrations with brief explanations. Oliphant responses to questions which readers such as I would probably ask if given the opportunity. For example, this brief excerpt quoted verbatim:
"Katz: So you were aware pretty early on that cartooning didn't get the respect that it deserved for the quality of work that it represented.
"Oliphant: Yes, not enough anyway. David Low did more for the art than anybody in this century, I think. Of course there've been others, but his penmanship and his brushwork, and his sense of draftsmanship were just so well advanced. And of course you need to believe in something when you're doing this business.
"Katz: What did you believe in at that time? [i.e. late-1970s] What was behind the passion? Did you feel in your gut that there was a tradition you wanted to be part of?
"Oliphant: Yes. And I don't think there's such a thing as a good conservative cartoonist. I think you have to have a fire in the gut to do it, and that doesn't come from being a conservative. You have to, by necessity, be a liberal. Otherwise you don't get into cartooning. You go and be a lawyer, or a stockbroker. You're not gonna sit there complacently and let things happen around you or to you. It's a way of being able to participate and maybe influence. Any cartoonist who rates himself or herself as a conservative will inevitably turn out cartoons which look like book illustrations -- all very competent, but with no fire or heart."
Oliphant never seems to lose what Rafael Sabatini says of Andre Moreau in the novel Scaramouche: "He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world is mad." One of my personal favorites portrays President Ronald Reagan as he was about to launch his campaign for a second term. Oliphant created a whimsical illustration of him ("There he goes again," page 40) wearing a top hat and tails and carrying a cane, leaping from one ice floe to another. The caption refers to a favorite Reagan putdown in presidential campaign debates as well as to his reputation as the "Teflon president."
Most of his cartoons leave no doubt whatsoever as to what his opinion is of the given subject . The cartoon for which Oliphant received a Pulitzer Prize in 1966 is an indictment of the Viet Nam War. It portrays Ho Chi Minh, carrying a dead Viet Cong in his arms, proudly announcing "They won't get us to the conference table...will they?" (page 39) Another cartoon ("Remember Tiananmen Square," page 46) expresses Oliphant's contempt for totalitarianism's suppression of individual freedom in China.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out other collections of Oliphant's editorial cartoons as well as Attack of the Political Cartoonists which provides representative selections from almost 150 of his contemporaries. They and we are in Oliphant's substantial debt, especially as frustration with government leaders throughout the world is, if anything, greater now than ever before. When it comes to (in his words) "stirring up the animals," no one has done it better.

Book Description
In Autobiography: Narrative of Transformation, Carolyn Barros creates a primer for the study of autobiography, a genre many consider highly problematic. She sees autobiography as a "narrative of transformation"--a text that presents the "before" and "after" of an individual's life. Focusing on autobiography as narrative, of something that "happened to me," Barros highlights the various metamorphoses that are emplotted, bounded, and framed by the author's language and demonstrates that change is the operative metaphor in autobiographical discourse.
The study focuses primarily on autobiographies from the rich Victorian period. Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus, as it self-consciously fictionalized the composition of Diogenes Teufelsdröckh's life narrative, provides a striking analog and paradigm for introducing the study and its methodological approach. Barros's major chapters on John Henry Cardinal Newman, John Stuart Mill, Charles Darwin, and Margaret Oliphant detail four very different types of autobiographical transformation--religious, philosophical, scientific, and literary, and in Barros's judgment establish benchmarks for considering autobiographies from antiquity to the present. A final chapter discusses autobiography's significance to an individual writer's corpus, to a particular culture, and finally to a history of "narratives of transformation."
Autobiography: Narrative of Transformation provides literary scholars with engaging as well as informative scholarship which offers new possibilities for expanded readings of the genre.
"Demonstrates the value of taking a rhetorical approach to lifewriting, whether one analyzes the earliest extant classical texts of Greek antiquity or the postmodern projects of Roland Barthes." --Mary Jean Corbett, Miami University
Carolyn Barros is Associate Professor of English and Director of the Honors Program, University of Texas at Arlington.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointing book.......2001-08-28
This is a book of ghost stories by Margaret Wilson Oliphant, who is among the most respected authors in the genre of horror fiction. I happened upon H. P. Lovecraft's favorable review of the title story and had to read it. What a disappointment! The title story has a great concept behind it (an entire city is overrun for three days by the dead loved ones of its inhabitants), but the author fails to deliver. I developed no sympathy for any of the characters of the story. Nor did I take away any message from the story. At 114 pages, "The Beleaguered City" is a short novel. The book contains four short stories in addition to the title story. The book does contain one unforgetable gem, the short story "The Open Door". If I were rating just this story, I'd give it an unqualified five stars. In this story, two men try to find a logical explanation for ghostly sobbing sounds emanating from a ruined cottage in rural Scotland. One man is so moved and disturbed by his observations that he invites the local minister to watch with them. The minister recognizes the sobbing voice and then takes a mind-boggling approach to resolving the situation. Those of a fundamentalist mindset may find the religious themes to be upsetting (and possibly even blasphemous). The conclusion is very startling, but also very compassionate and beautiful. This story goes down on my short list of all-time favorites. While reading this story, I couldn't put the book down. By comparison, I found the other stories average to uninteresting.

Bidding Can Be Fun!.......2000-06-19
Bridge Over Troubled Bidding offers a basis to make aacceptable and competent bids, a rule of thumb (a comfort zone) assuring the player he/she can enter the game, enjoy and look forward to the next one. A plus is that we can focus on the cards dealt, what we can do with them and feel secure to enter the auction.
A Creative & Motivational Approach to Learning Bridge.......2000-04-29
Jan Pittelli offers the reader a wealth of information in an understandable and creative format. Her objectives for each chapter are very clear. She is able to meet the needs of the various learning styles of her readers by providing different approaches to deliver the information. Her visual presentations with the blocked off "Bridge Language", review sections, hands-on workbook practice, audiotape, and helpful advice from her experiences, provide the student with a fun and unintimidating way to learn bridge. Pittelli's encouragement along with a writing style which conveys her enthusiasm and respect for the game are very motivational to the beginning student.
Usable, Doable, Enjoyable.......2000-01-17
I have played bridge since I was a junior in high school at which time my mother insisted that I take bridge lessons. Although I rather enjoyed the game, the act of bidding was stressful to me. Substituting in a bridge group was always a tense experience. Invariably someone would ask, "Do you bid a (some term I never had even heard of)?" or after the bidding someone would ask, "WHY did you bid THAT". In short, before I read this book, bidding was no fun. I, like others I know, would sometimes pass early to avoid getting the bid. Now, after Bridge Over Troubled Bidding, I enjoy the entire game. I may not always win, and I may not always make my bid, but at least I'm approaching the game with knowledge and understanding which previously had escaped me. I'm personally glad that Pittelli was able to find a new and effective way to explain the act of bidding. I hope many readers will now be better able to enjoy the game and to even teach their own kids in such a delightful manner.

Outstanding book for beginners and for those who only think they know how to bid. Extremely valuable for anyone interested in learning the game or upgrading their bidding skills. This book is an absolute must for beginners and for those who have not played bridge for a while. Along with the book you also receive a workbook and audio tape. The workbook is excellent for practice and the tape is very helpful, easy to understand - you can brush up on your skills in the car.

Customer Reviews:
It's great ! Step by step modelling...like at school.......2007-07-30
I didn't want to use another 3d program as Carrara but I need it to build airplanes from drawn plans. This book gave me the possibility to understand how doing it! I have search around the web for tutorials on modelling airplanes or human figures But i never found something exaustive! This is a great book the only thing you need is to calm down your adventure spirit and follow step by step the author because sometimes result hard to understand even for novice like me.
A must have however !
A good book.......2006-06-14
This book covers a lot of modelling concepts for the beginner, and walks a person through the steps needed to model in a variety of ways (spline and vertex), and even has a chapter on modelling with Hexagon. Furthermore, the book briefly mentions the pro's and con's of UV, procedural, and projection mapping. Its tutorials are good for getting your feet wet, and a pretty thorough introduction to Carrara.
It may be missing some new Pro 5 features, so it might not be ideal for the seasoned Carrara veteran, however for beginners and intermediate people, its a fantastic resource.
I initially let some of the negative reviews persuade me from not buying the book, however with so few printed resources, I decided to get it. It was well worth the money spent, and I'm very glad I did buy it.
Much needed book!.......2006-06-05
Besides being the only Carrara book available besides the manual, this is still a great book. The author also wrote a Carrara 3 book, which has alot of the same wording, but the tutorials are different, so I recommend having both of them. The manual that comes with Carrara tells you what the program can do and the basic steps to do it, but this book tells you step by step how to do things. And sometimes you absolutely need to have two different views on things. Carrara is a low end 3D modeler, but it's still very hard to learn, not withstanding that even after two major patches, Carrara 5 is still a very buggy program!
Good Beginners Tutorial Book.......2006-03-16
This is a beginning/intermediate level book in tutorial format giving an introduction to 3D modelling using the Carrara 5 Pro software. 3D modelling is not simple, regardless of the software selected. And Carrara is no exception. This book though uses a step by step approach that introduces new terms like texturing, caustics and rendering with a combination of text and illustration that is as clear as any explanation that I've ever seen.
Throughout the book all kinds of images are used as illustrations. This includes fairly complex structures such as airplanes, cartoon characters, and human beings that get pretty close to photographic quality.
The book is supplied with a CD-ROM that includes a demonstration version of Carrara 5 Pro for Windows and Macintosh OS X. It also includes the modeler package Hexagon (Version 1.2). If you are thinking of a 3D package, this book with the demo software would clearly give you enough information to decide if Carrara is the package you want to use.
This book is the first one to come out that covers Carrera 5. Being the first, it isn't as complete as some of the other books will be. But once again, this is a book for beginners.
A solid book that is packed with useful tutorials.......2006-03-10
This a great book that really fills a void in the Carrara community. While there are many online resources for helping users learn this app, this is the only comprehensive project-based book available (other than the "Carrara 3 Handbook" by the same author). It is aimed primarily at the intermediate user; however, it contains some 3D basics available in the first few chapters to help beginners get up to speed, and some advanced tutorials in the last few chapters that advanced users can benefit from as well.
I could go into detail about the content of each chapter, but one of the reviewers above already does a great job at covering them.
The only reason I didn't give this book a full 5 stars (would have just gone with 4 and 1/2, if Amazon let me..) is because there are some cool new features of Carrara 5 that didn't make the book in time for its release. I will say that the upside to this is that we still have a huge book that was released within *just over a month* of the software's release.
Learning any 3D app is not easy. This book significantly cuts down on the learning curve with its project-based, easy-to-understand content. If you're looking for a glorified manual, then look elsewhere. If you want an informative, hands-on content-rich book that makes learning Carrara really fun and practical, then pick up this book. At around $30, you're absolutely getting your money's worth.
