Description:
This paper addresses the questions of whether private firms in eight European countries engage in earnings management, and if so, whether tax incentives affect such practices. To measure earnings management, we analyze the earnings distributions of private firms and compare these distributions with those of public firms in the same countries. The empirical evidence suggests that in absence of capital market pressures, firms still have incentives to manage earnings, as we find that private firms avoid reporting small losses. We further find that private firms in some countries where tax regulation strongly influences financial accounting do not avoid reporting small losses. We attribute this finding to tax incentives reducing firms' benefits of (upward) earnings management. Finally, our results suggest that some types of earnings management are due to capital market pressures and are specific to public firms since we do not find evidence that private firms avoid earnings decreases.

Description:
This research investigates the comparability and convergence of two sets of accounting standards from 1996 to 2002: United States' Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The investigation involves a sample of companies from the People's Republic of China (PRC) that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). PRC companies traded on the NYSE generally prepare IFRS financial statements and provide a limited reconciliation to U.S. GAAP, creating a unique quasi-experimental opportunity to examine differences between two sets of accounting numbers produced by two different sets of accounting standards while holding the company constant. Comparability is measured by using Gray's index of comparability, and a set of measures are introduced to capture several dimensions of convergence over time in reported net income, net assets, return on net assets, and earnings per share. The evidence shows lack of comparability, caused largely by the revaluations of property, plant and equipment permitted under IFRS, but not permitted under U.S. GAAP. There is, however, substantial evidence of convergence over time.

Description:
Policy debates with increasing frequency question whether the Scandinavian welfare model is robust to the challenges of international integration, demographic change, and changing socioeconomic conditions. The welfare model relies on a large public sector and strives for egalitarian outcomes. Beginning with an interpretation of the Scandinavian welfare model in terms of social insurance, I here consider the major challenges faced and some of the policy options. A particularly interesting question is whether the Scandinavian welfare model is more vulnerable to some challenges than other welfare models.

From the supplier: Review of scholarly work on the economic effects of corporate income taxation demonstrates substantial differences of opinion on the degree to which taxation and double taxation distort corporate finance decisions. The classical view is that equity financing is subject to double taxation and that this distorts finance decisions. Alternative views suggest that distortions are not significant because of the availability of debt financing as an alternative. More recent theories question whether dividend tax breaks would promote economic activity.

Description:
Prior research documents considerable diversity in the amount of detail provided by companies in complying with the foreign country disclosure requirements of SFAS 131. We posit that the potential competitive harm associated with country specific disclosures provides an incentive for management to avoid making these disclosures. Specifically, we hypothesize that firms with higher potential competitive harm costs will provide less detailed geographic area disclosures. Our results show that, as expected, firms exposed to greater competitive harm costs provide less detailed country specific revenue disclosures. This study helps to explain the diversity in practice with respect to the level of detail provided by companies in their geographic area disclosures under SFAS 131. In addition, it adds to the literature examining the impact of potential competitive harm on disclosures made by U.S. firms, by extending the line of research to geographic area disclosures.

Book Description
Originally published in 1993, Sit! was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times and was excerpted in Harper's magazine and The New York Times Book Review. George Booth, writing in the NYTBR, called it "the best of humor....Delightful!" while Cosmopolitan pronounced it "irresistible."
Renamed Remembrance of Dogs Past, this fetching collection of 70 disarmingly funny portraits is as fresh and funny as ever. Beginning with an 18th- or 19th-century ancestral portrait, Thierry Poncelet seamlessly paints in a dog's head over the original human subject's. The resulting tour de force is a fantasy that looks uncannily real, the dogs appearing all too human in their military regalia or elaborate gowns. And for a glorious twist, New Yorker humorist Bruce McCall names each dog and offers a brilliant tongue-in-cheek biographical sketch. Thus there's Lord Gristle (black Labrador), proprietor of a vast tabloid chain, with dark memories of rolled-up newspapers; Marie-Claire DuBossy (white poodle), who shocked France's poetry circles by refusing to beg; and Percival Horace Denbeigh (Jack Russell terrier), Britain's foremost military correspondent, with an infallible nose for news.
It's a howl.

This is the best single volume book on the horror film, the definitive reference work devoted to the subject. It contains entries on every movie even remotely connected to the genre, whether it is a 19-century silent, a grade "Z" schlocker, or an "art" film by the likes of Fritz Lang or Ingmar Bergman. Each entry contains a full list of credits and a descriptive review. Hardy writes about horror movies with such enthusiasm and intelligence that you feel you're getting the low down on the genre from a sincere and learned friend.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, but seriously flawed..........2005-12-27
In terms of exhaustiveness, this book is probably second to none. Not only does it survey almost every American horror movie ever made, it contains a good lot on international films, especially italian giallos. A new edition of this 1994 book would be most welcome.
However, the authors of this book make the serious mistake of revealing key plot details of most movies, thus ruining the viewing experience of the unwary viewer. This is not how reviews ought to be written. So please do not read the review from this book before viewing the movie, it will ruin it for you!!!
from alien to zomie nightmare this book has it all.......2005-08-20
The overlook film encylopedia:horror, not to be confused with the horror at the overlook hotel HERE'S JONNY and here's my review. The Overlook is quiet simply the only horror movie review/reference guide you will ever need I have tried them all no realy just ask my librarain I mean just go into your local library and ask for a book on say russ meyer or or the spaltter films of the 1980's and see what kind of looks you get.but I not only digress I ramble .to sum up don't miss ths book becuse it is a must have for horror movie fans
The most comprehensive horror film reference.......2002-03-30
The fact that this encyclopedia has not been updated since its last reprinting in 1995 borders on the offensive. That's because it is simply the best reference of the genre I've ever encountered. The book is filled with short to medium length reviews of horror films from every period in film history (up to 1992) and every nation which dabbles in the genre.
The fact that the encyclopedia is that complete is not necessarily its biggest asset. The reviews which compose the book do not simply provide summary, a quick line or two of evaluation, and a useless star rating a la Leonard Martin. Instead, each review examines its subject in relation to other similar works by subject, studio, director, actor, etc. It refuses to provide star ratings, favoring a more detailed explanation of a film's strengths and weaknesses. Also, and this pleases me the most, many films are examined through a critical lense, looking at how the film explores gender, culture, politics, economics, etc.
Combine these strengths with the inclusion of just about every horror film ever made and you have a book horror fans will leave by their bedside.
This encyclopedia treats the horror film genre as it should be treated, an important and vital field of art with a history and voice to be heard. Any causal or serious student of horror films must own this book. It will deepen and enlive their enjoyment of horror, from the absurd and esoteric, to the classic and mainstream.
Essential depite it's flaws........2002-01-06
This book has it's flaws, there is no doubt about that, various films are missing, the writing is overly politically correct, almost every film is considered either racist or homophobic and every time a women is killed it is because the director either hates or fears women. Did they ever think that maybe the reason there are beautiful women in these movies is so that there is something to hold the viewers interest between killings rather than having them nod off because of the inane dialogue. Then there are the racist cannibal films. Most of these films are little more than a chance to show some extreme gore and nothing more should be read into them than that. I must say that I am surprised that they missed the right wing political views that are rife in ZOMBIE. They also give away the ending to half the films.
Still, it's a great book, and I'm not beiing sarcastic. As a reference guide for the horror fanatic it's second to none. I have certainly never read anything with as much information on each individual film as this, as I mentioned before there is sometimes too much information, ruining twist endings and giving away key plot elements before you have had a chance to discover them for yourself, but you just have to be careful how you read it. I've owned this book for a few years now, and have read it through about twenty times and I am still picking it up often and going over old ground and discovering new information. Any horror fan must own this, no two ways about it.
Pretty comprehensive, but flawed.......2000-05-18
I am still waiting for a perfect horror reference guide and this one comes pretty close. It is still missing dozens of titles that are elusive, but not THAT elusive! Most of the missing titles are still available on video at most video outlets! For anyone mildly interested in the genre, this should make you a hardcore addict! For those already hardcore addicts, you will probably cringe at some of the films missing but enjoy the extensive research put into the films. Yes, some pictures would look better in color, but the book's already a fortune, why have the price raised? Don't let the price discourage you, this is the best guide I've seen in the past few years (besides Michael Weldon's exhaustive PSYCHOTRONIC books). If you're still wary about buying it, look at the measurements of the book and how many pages it has. Nuff said.

Victorian Role Playing at its best.......2000-09-15
This is the main rulebook for the Forgotten Futures game, a line which offers historical fiction (with novels and stories by authors like Kipling and Conan Doyle) along with game rules, adventures and worldbooks to play in the "Scientific Romances" genre (i.e. the speculative fiction, or Science Fiction, if you prefer, of the Victorian and Edwardian period).
The book covers all rules for "generic" adventuring in the period, detailing both the standard RPG topics (like combat and skill advancement) and specially designed systems for covering genre-specific stuff like "lost-world" dinosaurs and wondrous scientific discoveries.
The game system was developed just for this line, and has been available by electronic distribution for years, ensuring a good playtesting. It has been used either as a standalone product or as a sourcebook for other game lines (like Space 1889 or Castle Falkenstein).
If you like the idea of adventuring in the worlds of Wells or Verne, Forgotten Futures is a must-buy: it is very playable, well-researched and comes with a lot of period-specific material.

Cisco Catalyst switches, a common ingredient in many campus, metropolitan, enterprise, and service provider networks, are complex devices that require many configuration steps for proper operation. Not only are the required commands difficult to remember, but locating reference material on them also requires extensive research that is both time- consuming and difficult to complete in the field. Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration is a quick and portable reference guide to the most commonly used features that can be configured on Cisco Catalyst switches.
Derived from the authors' notes about how to configure a variety of Cisco Catalyst features during the course of their preparation for the CCIE(r) exam, Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration is an indispensable tool that helps you perform the most popular deployment tasks. From the first page, the authors zero in on quick facts, configuration steps, and explanations of configuration options in each Cisco Catalyst feature. The different variations of the Cisco Catalyst operating systems (COS and Cisco IOS(r) Software) are shown together for side-by-side comparison, making it easy to move from one Cisco Catalyst platform to another.
The book presents concise implementation advice for families of Cisco Catalyst features, including configuration fundamentals, Layer 2 interface configuration, Layer 3 interface configuration, VLANs and trunking, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Layer 3 switching, multicast, server load balancing, access control, switch management, quality of service (QoS), and voice. Additional appendixes provide you with critical details on well-known ports and addresses, specialized switch modules, VLAN extension, and a cabling guide. The quick reference format allows you to easily locate just the information you need without searching through thousands of pages of documentation, saving you time and helping you to get the devices up and running quickly and smoothly.
Whether you are looking for a handy, portable reference to more easily configure Cisco Catalyst switches in the field, or you are preparing for CCNA(r), CCNP(r), or CCIE certification, you will find Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration to be an essential resource that will save you hours of research time.

beginners level.......2006-03-05
I'm not writing this to discredit the book. I think it is very well done. I just think it should be made clear that this is a beginners level book. There is a lot of emphasis placed on translating cat os into native. There are also numerous examples of how to configure various topologies. I think it is very well done. However, anybody who can read and use the univercd, will have a wealth of knowledge, far beyond what can be contained in this book, within a few mouse clicks.
If you are familiar with only one of these operating systems and require knowledge of the other. This is a good buy. I always had trouble trying to interpret the logic used the catos. But, concerning gaining a deeper understanding of switching, I didn't get anything from this one.
A good book at showing Cat configs.......2006-02-03
CiscoPress's "Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration" by Hucaby and McQuerry is a very strong attempt at documenting the configuration implementations of Cisco switches. Any Cisco Switching book is going to need to make a decision as soon as the first page - and that is how best to document the two separate and totally different versions of Cisco Catalyst operating systems - COS and OS. This book takes a different tact - and one that I think works very well. Instead of splitting up the two OS domains and describing each in their own respective sections - the authors have decided to show how to implement both types of commands at the same time. This little difference is profound in the way it helps demonstrate the use of each command and eliminates redundancy found in other all-in-one switching books.
It is important to note that this is not a Switching-101 book. You definitely need a decent understanding of the various subjects - Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP), Virtual-Trunking Protocol (VTP), etc... The book does a good job at discussing the different implementations of Vlans and Trunking (Chapter 6).
One reassuring item to note is that I did not find any typos in the book. I have used this book while studying for my CCIE R&S lab (I think a lot of CCIE candidates forget that the `S' in R&S stands for Switching). I have also used this book for real-world implantations. I feel the utilitarian value of this book is much higher than Hucaby and McQuerry's similar book on Router configuration.
I give this book 4 pings out of 5:

Excellent Reference for Everyday Switch Administrators.......2003-11-09
I am a network engineer and use the Catalyst 2900, 2950, 3500 and the 4000's on a daily basis. We do a lot of VLAN configurations, trunking using 801.q, static port access, along with other various switch configs. This book has been indispensable for my daily routines. There has not once been an instant where I couldn't find the answer to what I was trying to accomplish when configuring a Cisco Catalyst Switch. This also gives you the commands for COS and IOS and also tells you which switch supports what and which switch doesn't (example: the Catalyst 2950 supports 801.q by default, where others support ISL by default). I highly recommend this book for all your switching administrative needs.
A must for Engineers.......2003-04-14
The author has put together a very clear and concise book which is essential for engineers. Whether using it as a reference or to read it cover to cover it is well worth the purchase. A+
Great Book!.......2002-11-24
This book covers 2900 Series up to 6000 Series Catalyst Switches including Catlayst 3500XL and 2900MXL Series. This book is not for CCNA wannabe's, cause it doesn't include Catalyst 1900 Series. Besides, you should know Cisco Switching before attempting to read this book. This book is more help on your day to day Cisco Catalyst administration job.
This book beats Cisco LAN Switching (CCIE Professional Development). It covers those topics that Cisco LAN Switching lacks - from Switch Functionality, SE Configuration, creating VLANs & Trunking, STP, Multilayer Switching, to QOS. More examples than LAN Switching.
This book, together with the Cisco Routers for IP Routing Little Black Book (by: Innokenty Rudenko) and Remote Access for Cisco Networks (by: William Burton and Bill Burton), your daily administration of Cisco devices will be easy as you have never imagined. Of course you need at least a CCNA Advanced Level or a CCNP level to use these three books.
I'm a CCNP/CCDA supporting Internet Data Centre / Internet Service Provider Core Routers/Distribution Switches/Access Switches and I found that this book is valuable to my daily administration tasks. I highly recommend this book for Cisco Catalyst administrators.

Cisco designed the Internetwork Operating System (IOS) to adapt to many different situations, which is part of the reason it has so many commands--the official documentation fills more than a foot of shelf space! Cisco Field Manual: Router Configuration extracts the most widely used router commands from that body of documentation and, without dumbing them down at all, presents them in a way that's extremely helpful to people who want straightforward answers about what they need to do in order to make their equipment do what they want. The best way to use this book--and it's a great value for everyone short of a very experienced IOS expert--is to look in the index for the subject that interests you (configuring access lists around NetBIOS names, for example, or setting up Quality of Service for voice traffic), then flip to the pages that explain what you need to do.
For the purpose of exploring a typical example of this book's coverage, suppose you want to provide Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services with your Cisco router. This book, in a three-page spread that combines explicit command listings with explanatory text and background information, tells you exactly what to do at the IOS command line. Where you have a choice to make, such as whether you want to specify a Domain Name Service (DNS) server in your DHCP broadcast, it's clear what your options are and how to implement all possible choices. After the step-by-step procedure that covers all typical cases, there's a complete example--in the form of a complete input and output listing from the IOS command line--that shows the configuration process from start to finish. --David Wall
Topics covered: Assuming very little about the background of the reader, this book explains how to make Cisco Systems routers do what most people need them to do. Bridging, virtual LANs (VLANs), Quality of Service (QoS), access lists and other aspects of security, and routing-protocol tweaks are all covered here.

Good intro to various functions - but not for advanced implementations.......2006-02-02
"Cisco Field Manual: Router Configuration" by Hucaby and McQuerry - you figure with a title like that you would have your one-stop shop for configurations of Cisco routers. Sadly, you will be going to the Cisco website before too long for more advanced configuration examples and explanations. While the book does do an excellent job at introducing a variety of functions - (CDP
, logging, SAA), and interfaces; after these areas the book starts to lose it's value.
For example - the chapter on routing protocols starting on page 253 is extremely introductory (yes, only one chapter on a book of routers, which, the last time I looked routes based upon ROUTING protocols). The EIGRP discussion does not mention that the netmask can be applied to the end of the network command - yet the book discusses `variance' and how to apply metric weights (now which command(s) do you think a Net Admin will apply more often?).
And then you much watch out for the typos. For example - on page 367, you would be stuck if you applied the command `priority-group 2' when you just finished configuring custom-queues.
Overall, I was hoping to have a book I could stick in my laptop bag and use as an instant-reference if I was stuck for a configuration. If I was using this book, I believe I would still be searching for that answer.
I give this book 3 pings out of 5:

Outstanding practical guide.......2003-10-20
I had the pleasure of being one of the technical editors for this book. It was my eleventh book edited. I've long since lost count of the number of technical books I've readm but this book stands out from among the others as one of the best I've ever seen.
It has a simple-sounding objective: to show how to do particular tasks. It came from the CCIE lab study notes of the authors. As such, it does not promise to explain theory or design. It just shows how to do something.
Want to configure "X"? Turn to the page and see the steps. It doesn't matter if "X" is dynamic access lists, NAT, DHCP, Frame Relay, DDR, HSRP or scores of other things - this book is the best "how-to" source I've ever come across.
If you are studying for a Cisco cert or just want a reference manual to help you through unfamiliar tasks at work, this is one of the must have books. I use it in my every day work and in my teaching. You will, too.
IT covers most about Cisco Router configuration, but..........2002-11-30
it doesn't explain it well. I can also use TAB and ? keys in the keyboard when I'm inside Cisco Router, better than using this book. What lacks here are sample configuration in a given situation or scenario, and more explanation of the commands and command options. What this book did was give the command and command options.
"Cisco Routers for IP Routing Little Black Book" by Innokenty Rudenko is still the best handbook, combine it with "Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration" by Dave Hucaby, Stephen McQuerry, David Hucaby, and "Remote Access for Cisco Network" by Bill Burton, William Burton you are ready for the real-world task of configuring and troubleshooting Cisco Routers and Catalyst Switches.
Good reference guide........2002-11-22
The authors did a great job of presenting the relatively basic information on configuring Cisco routers. You will find quite a few useful IOS commands discussed in the book that will want to keep it as a handy reference. I would also suggest looking into getting "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. That book would take you deeper into mechanics of modern routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP), along with a discussion of Cisco IOS commands.
Step by Step Configuration - Priceless tool.......2002-06-24
This is a truly practical book. It features material most often configured on Cisco routers and gives the reader a step-by-step description of how to implement it. This is not a book for people seeking to learn networking, or the theory behind protocols and IOS features. It is just as the title says, a manual with "no nonsense" how-to's. A good quick reference when you don't have the Cisco documentation CD and need to implement something fast.
