Next Best Thing to Owning the Movies!.......2007-09-11

I'll start this review by saying that, in fact, I haven't read THIS book, but I own Grant's older book from the '80's of the same title (which I bought from a used book seller for $3!), and I assume that this is the same material, but with some new stuff added. I plan to buy this newer book, because I can't wait to see this author's views on the subsequent movies that came out.

John Grant's description of the Disney movies and cartoons is amazingly detailed, and he profiles every character, from Mickey Mouse to obscure supporting characters that most people have forgotten about. While reading the entries, I remembered several movies and cartoons that I had seen as a kid, and forgotten about. It made me want to run out and buy all the old movies on DVD, so I could watch them again and relive this simpler time!

While Grant is definitely a Disney fan, he does look at the movies with a critical eye, and is willing to admit some of the shortcomings they had, including some of the racism that appeared in the earlier films (although I think he was a little too soft on this, which could be seen as insensitive to many people). He also has this charming, very British style of writing, that's addictive to read. Great escapist fun for any Disney fan!

When will there be a new edition of this wonderful book?.......2005-10-30

This is almost certainly the best book on Disney animation ever published - it is difficult to think of superlatives that other reviewers haven't already (quite rightly) used in their praise of it. (To the reviewer who complained about the omission of Eega Beeva: Eega Beeva is a character in the comics, not the animated movies.) Astonishingly comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, and written with the kind of stylish wit that makes the mere act of reading the text a joy in itself, the Encyclopedia deserves all the praise that has been heaped on it.

I have only one complaint. This is the third edition, and was published in 1998. Why oh why has there been no subsequent edition? What has gotten into Disney's corporate head that they have not begged Mr. Grant, well known for his extensive writings elsewhere, to bring the story of Disney animation up to date? Such a book is desperately needed!

Great Disney Resource.......2003-02-22

This is a definite must-have for any Disney fan. The book is divided into three basic sections: Characters in shorts, characters in television shows, and characters in features. Each category has a mention of every Disney character created until 1997 including interesting articles about them. This is also a great place to find information on lesser-known or forgotten Disney characters such as Spike the bee from a number of Donald Duck cartoons and Little Hans, a star of his own wartime propaganda film. Combine this with hundreds of pictures from the films and you have a book that is sure to be a favorite of any Disney fan.

No Disney fan should be without it!.......2002-12-17

First, while the title of this book is accurate, it is also misleading. This is no fluffy, flimsy book containing some fun descriptions of Disney characters from the latest popular films. This is an intense, in-depth look at EVERY Disney animated character since Walt began his career. The book is divided into two parts, "Shorts" and "Feature Films". The shorts have the usual gang, Donald, Mickey, Goofy, Pluto, and so on. After each characters bio is a list of every Disney short they've appeared in. Don't be worried or fooled by by this truly encyclopedic book - it is not a boring A to Z book. Color photos pop off of every page, including some from rarely seen Disney shorts. The feature films section not only includes detailed character bios, but plot summaries and "making of" details, cast and crew credits, and more. You buy this book, you will have a list of EVERY Disney short ever made (including the early "Alice" shorts and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit), every feature film in chronological order, and enough information about each one to be the champ of any Disney trivia game!

Excellent but not with every characters.......2000-11-02

Excellent Disney historic resource. If you're a Disney fan you will enjoy it, unless you're locking for a line about Eega Beeva, because you won't find any- a pity. Daniel

Fred Seibert IS an Original Cartoon!.......2006-01-21

I finally got my copy of Fred Seibert's long awaited "Original Cartoons" and it was worth the wait...or shall I say the weight! There is so much in this book...postcards from Fred's days at MTV Networks to Hanna Barbera to Frederator, and everything in between. If there ever was a true definition of a coffee table book...this is it!

As Animation World Network says "If one man can be credited with resuscitating American commercial animation from a near-death experience in the 80's and 90's, the credit would have to go to Fred Seibert"

Bravo to Fred and Eric for a very enjoyable look back...and forward!

I acquired this book when I was in high school, having just discovered Monty Python. I was fascinated by the strange cutout animations that joined the skits, and that's what drew me to the book originally. Now, it is a rare, classic treasure. Mainly, it is a book overviewing cutout animation. The fun part is the documenting of a body of work that Gilliam has now moved away from as a film director. There are a few political cartoons, not used for Python, and some pages of raw sketches that show the darker side of animation. Plus, as a bonus, you get a running gag about a black spot and a badger that keep trying to hijack the actual book as you read it.... Technically beneficial to animators, a Holy Grail of acquisitions to Gilliam fans.

Terry Gilliam is a wonderful animator, the success of Monty Pythons Flying Circus was to a large part because of his graphic abilities. Everyone who has seen the opening titles with the big foot squash will know what to expect from this book. In this book, he goes to great lengths, to help you make graphics that can be funny. Even more importantly he shows you how to make animation with very little effort. This book was a lifesaver for me when I made my first Hollywood animation back in the early 1980's. Absolute essential reading for every cut-out animator or pixilator, and recommended to all who aspire to amuse others. Suitable for all ages, as my three children loved it.

Surprisingly insighful.......2006-06-22

Frankly I read this book - a gift from a semi-warped friend - expecting some cheap thrills and a few laughs. I got plenty of both. However, I didn't expect such a well-written, insightful look into just why these crazy auctions "work." Moreover, author Chris Cihlar has put some creative energy and novel thought into modern American promotion, and in doing so gave me some new ways to think about my own future marketing of "normal stuff" on eBay.

But the book is mostly a lot of fun to read and there's enough substance to read it more than once - especially if you like to laugh out loud. P.T. Barnum would have loved this one.

I can't wait to see the movie.

I found out about this book from someone posting a link to it on my website! When I saw that I knew I just had to have my own copy! I bought it on Amazon, And started to read it as soon as it arrived. I love the book! I think Mr. Cihlar did a brilliant job to show the true eBay celebs and not the "self-Proclaimed" wanna-be's! It's awesome that Mr. Cihlar put together ORIGINAL auctions that were first brought to eBay by the original sellers. The funny part was that so many have copied each of these auction ACTING like they were the first one to think of it! What a crazy world we live in! I have been selling on eBay since 1997 and have seen many sellers call themselves EBAY CELEBRATIES. The title came from THEM giving that title to themselves! Begging for members to watch them, to notice them to buy stupid items from them. This status was not earned , it was created by the sellers. If you are looking for the great American novel this is not it,,,,but if you are looking for a fun read with wry humor that comments on pop culture this is it. It is much more than just a rehash of famous ebay auctions,,,nice commentary and insight with a touch of humor. You will enjoy this whether you are an ebay addict or have never looked at it.

Hard to put down once you pick it up.......2006-05-31

I heard about this book and originally intended to make it a gift for a friend but I ended up keeping it for myself. We have been passing it around the family and everyone is getting some pretty good laughs out of it. It's funny how a book about Ebay auctions is so hard to put down, particularly by the non-Ebayers in the family. I highly recommend this book to keep around the house / gift for anyone / or for those in love with modern pop culture.

Bailey's book deals with the attitudes towards English and how they have changed over the centuries. For this purpose the author has collected an impressive amount of evidence which he presents in a convincing, not overly academic way. Bailey deals both with attitudes towards English in Great Britian itself and abroad, that is in the former colonies. A highly recommended book!

Tried to covered a broad concept and has done it well. He is more a video expert than an IP expert but given the breadth of the concept he is trying to cover, I must say, he has done a great job. I would have given him 5 starts if he had not use the term "signal" in the IP and RTP discussions.

If you are professionally involved in video, this book serves as the perfect first stop reference that will give you a quick understanding of what the technologies are for and how they interrelate. At Last, the Answers!.......2006-03-03

As a video engineer for over 30 years, I am constantly amazed by what passes for reference work in the field of television, communications and computers. Most of the technical books answer a few questions at best and are very good at putting one to sleep, very quickly!

Not so with Mr. Simpson's book. "Video Over IP, a Practical Guide..."is,indeed, just that. With the convergence of entertainment communications and computers, the plethora of acronyms in this field is worse than it's ever been. Video over IP cuts through the clutter and provides concise, easy to understand answers. Mixed in are real life application descriptions, and practical examples that describe the technology clearly and in a way that can be understood by engineers and managers alike. An example is Mr. Simpson's analogy comparing MAC addresses and IP addresses, where the MAC address is similar to an automobile's VIN number and the IP address, which may vary over the life of a piece of hardware, is analogous to the registration or plate number. Brilliant! Couple this with the review and checklist update at the end of each chapter, and what we have is an excellent reference work that is both easy to read and up to date. A must have for anyone in the video, telecom or entertainment fields.

The author is a highly-respected expert in this field and speaks with authority on the subject, yet has written a volume that is very readable and useful as a reference. I can highly recommend this work as an up-to-date review of the topic.
