      Book Description

"A first-rate irascible American humorist...This man Grizzard deserves high honors in the field of fun."
      ATLANTA JOURNAL & CONSTITUTION
In his twelfth collection of outrageous writings, he's kinder. He's gentler. He's one unusual American with a whole lot to say about the things that vex us all: like Rice Krispies, funeral preaching, news that's unfit to print (or even think about for that matter), uncommon dawg tales, and the unavaoidable light at the end of the tunnel.

5 out of 5 stars A kinder, gentler Lewis Grizzard.......2004-05-07

The first several collections of Lewis Grizzard were culled from articles unapologetically written with a distinct Southern Flavor, which perhaps limited his audience. This collection, just as insightful as those previous, comes at a time when Lewis seems more at ease with his place and age and has little to offend anyone while offering his usual portion of fun.

Lewis Grizzard was, like his friend Weyman C. Wannamaker, a Great American. His writing celebrated his Southern Heritage and is full of stories about faithful dogs, good country music and women who looked so good they'd make a preacher break out in a sweat. Lewis loved his momma, his country and his culture, and he wrote about the things he loved in a way that if you didn't love them too, at least you could understand why he did. He is missed.

5 out of 5 stars Wit and Wisdom. Grizzard at his best!.......2002-05-21

Ahh...who couldn't like Grizzard? Except if you're a Yankee ;P Wish he was still around to write more. It's the only book of his I read (and won't be the last, I assure you) and I already miss him.

5 out of 5 stars Wit, Wisdom and down home Southern humor.......1999-08-16

Never get tired of this book. Funny, enlightening and very eye opening at times...

I read this book almost a million times and I always find something different to laugh at. It should become a classic someday in the world of comedy books.

Karal Ann Marling, a professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota, examines Elvis Presley, the cultural phenomenon, through the places he lived. From his place of birth, the two-room "shot-gun house" in Tupelo, to the fabled hilltop mansion, Graceland, Marling shows that despite international acclaim he never lost his Mississippi roots. Elvis often shared Graceland with "the guys"--an entourage of relatives, assistants and school pals--"like a teenager whose parents weren't home" and was not above putting a bullet through the television when he saw something he didn't like. Marling argues that through conspicuous consumption, compulsive refurnishing of rooms and garish decor, Presley knew he was thumbing his nose at good taste and consciously cultivating his own legend.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not for Elvis fans.......2006-03-21

The book generally present Elvis and his surroundings as seedy, degenerate. The 35 small, black and white illustrations, with their distorted dimensions, enhance this image.

I thought there might be a lot of information on Elvis's various homes. I was disappointed. The author wanders far afield of things Elvis. There is a significant amount of coverage on the homes of other celebrities, and there is an obsession with external columns. One chapter is devoted to William Faulkner. The final chapter describes the author's trip home from Memphis to her home in Minnesota.

I was surprised at the 12 pages devoted to "Sources". The book's text did not suggest extensive homework on Elvis, but the "Acknowledgments" give credit to four grad students for their assistance.

The page count breaks down as follow: Table of Contents - 2, text - 242 (including 16 chapters and an introduction), Sources -12, and Acknowledgments - 2.

The prose came across as meandering, often depressing, but eloquent blather, packaged under the Elvis name to sell copies. Perhaps writing in this matter purges the author of her own frustrations. Despite it's overall negativity, it was still interesting in its perspective.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating read, even for we non-fanatics........2002-05-29

My son brought this book home as part of a school project and I absentmindedly picked it up and started reading. It really hooked me from the start and I ended up reading it cover to cover in just a couple of days.

The author has a great way of meandering from subject to subject so that the book encompasses much more than just facts about Graceland. It studies how the houses that we live in represent where we have come from and where we are going, not just as individuals but as a culture and a country.

The book also looks honestly at Elvis Presley's life, without wallowing in the uglier aspects of his life and death.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis and his homes........1998-01-11

Elvis was the unique product of a very specific time and place; a cultural expression of that sweaty, hardscrabble slice of Mississippi River Delta biracial culture which has produced so much of the authentic in American music.
The singer's unusual and deep attachment to his context is well understood in this perceptive biography, whose author views and interprets Presley through his homes, from the shotgun shack in East Tupelo to the "Peckerwood Palace" of Graceland. Highly readable and of value to students of contemporary American culture, but committed Elvis fans will not be comforted by this unblinking examination of the King and his world.

(The "score" rating is an ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)

5 out of 5 stars Graceland speak about Elvis..........1996-12-09

Truly great book on the myth of Elvis Presley and also about the history of the past in the United States. We can understand in a better way what Graceland truly mean to Elvis... A superficial time-line concerning his life is also a great source of informations about the man behind the star... Edith Robitaille from Quebec, Canada.

The puzzles in this book will excite and entertain you. While many of them are based on routine puzzle themes, they are still of interest. Some are simple enough for middle school children and others are best left to adults. What makes all of this so much fun is that most times you canýt tell the difference at first glance. Which is what makes puzzles so interesting. The best seem easy when they are hard and hard when they are easy. There are 128 puzzles in this collection, and while there are some groaners and head slappers, none are dull. This book is well worth reading.

                  Book Description

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides a way to automate and manage the network configurations of devices that use the TCP/IP protocol suite. Without DHCP, network administrators must manually enter in IP addresses for each computer and network device and then manually change that address each time the device is moved to a different part of the network. The DHCP Handbook, Second Edition is a complete reference for understanding DHCP, deploying and managing DHCP services, and debugging problems with DHCP clients and servers. Chapters devoted to failover, authentication, Windows 2000, DHCPv6, and DHCP/DNS interaction reflect the recent updates to the standard and issues that are most pertinent to network planners and administrators. Throughout the book, the authors are careful to balance conceptual discussions of DHCP with detailed implementation examples and practical advice.

4 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about DHCP.......2007-01-09

The book is organized well, has an excellent index and provides detailed information from basic concepts through to advanced configurations, diagnostics and troubleshooting. I obtained this book because our organization had just deployed new DNS/DHCP appliances and there were problems with the DHCP failover configuration. This book provided as much detail as I could have asked for. It turned out that, (at the time of writing this review, Jan 2007) ISC DHCP failover is thoroughly broken. So although this book couldn't help me with our failover problem, I still recommend it for those who need a comprehensive DHCP reference.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent DHCP book for learning and reference.......2006-11-09

I have been supporting and programming dhcp for many years and find the DHCP Handbook an excellent reference for DHCP operations on Linux.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, in-depth coverage of DHCP.......2004-06-09

If you have to design, configure, and manage a complex DHCP environment, this book is an outstanding resource. I've used the first edition (first printing ;-) for years, and am in the process of purchasing the second edition.

In that time I've configured or set configuration standards for dozens of DHCP servers running the ISC DHCP server and dozens more managed by Lucent's VitalQIP DHCP service. I have not personally configured or managed a Microsoft DHCP server, but I've walked many consultants through setting up DHCP servers from Microsoft, Cisco, Linksys, etc.

The value of this book is its depth. Protocols, design considerations, conditional leases, client identification, authentication, failover, client issues, OS considerations, Dynamic DNS integration, migration between static and dynamic environments, and just about everything else you'll run into are well covered.

The authors are actively involved in the development of DHCP standards and the ISC DHCP reference implementation, so it's difficult to find a more authoritative source. If you can't find your answer in the book, the authors are active on the DHCP mailing lists (http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/dhcp/dhcp-lists.php).

The wealth of information can be intimidating at first, but if you're dealing with a non-trivial environment it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Er, as one of the authors..........2004-05-30

...I feel the need to address some points raised in a rather negative review that was posted here on Amazon. The reviewer did not like the DHCP Handbook, and preferred an O'Reilly book on DHCP for Windows 2000. I haven't read the O'Reilly book, so I can't really comment on its content, but I am guessing that if you are a Windows 2000 administrator, it's quite good.

The Microsoft DHCP server addresses a fairly narrow marketplace, and lacks some features that are present in the leading commercial and non-commercial DHCP servers. The DHCP Handbook provides some coverage of the Microsoft DHCP server, but does not specialize on the Microsoft product, so it is undoubtedly much less complete from that particular perspective - instead, the DHCP Handbook tries to provide general coverage of the DHCP protocol in a way that will be useful across a broad range of DHCP servers.

So if, for example, you want a detailed presentation on the DHCP failover protocol, particularly on how to administer it, you will probably have to find it in the DHCP Handbook. Also, there is some good coverage of DNS updates. And of course there is some very detailed coverage of the ISC DHCP server, which a Windows 2000 DHCP administrator will probably find useless, but a Linux administrator might consider helpful.

If all else fails, it's fairly thick, and might be useful in propping up your desk table if the floors in your office aren't level. :')

BTW, I gave the book four stars, because I think it covers the material well and is more complete than any competing book. I do not claim that our prose is the best, although any failings in that regard are probably mine and not Ralph's. As one of the authors I am obviously biased, so please take this rating with a grain of salt.

I am also the author of the ISC DHCP server and a developer on a team at Nominum that has produced an excellent commercial DHCP server, so my views on the Microsoft server may not be entirely accurate and should also be taken with a grain of salt - in particular, I have not played with the server that comes with WinXP server which, for all I know, dances circles around my paltry offerings.

all it is is a second edition of The DHCP Handbook: Understanding, Deploying, and Managing Automated Configuration Services. First edition was bad, this was better but non the least. Still full of technical flaws and bad advice. Get the O'reilly Dhcp book, you won't be disappointed. I'm using this as a coster for my coffe mug.

                  Book Description

DHCP is an authoritative overview and expert guide to the set up and management of a DHCP server. The book begins with a thorough technical introduction to DHCP--how it was developed, how it interacts with other protocols such as TCP/IP, etc. Part II discusses how DHCP operates; including initial configurations, handling rebooting and lease extension, and DHCP relay agents. In Part III, the authors share their expertise on the efficient use of DHCP in different environments. Part IV covers the technical intricacies of the interaction between DHCP servers and clients, and how to optimally manage each relationship. The final section covers network hardware, inter-server communication, security, SNMP, and IP mobility. The book concludes with several appendices that provide a rich resource for networking professionals working with DHCP.

I have been so disappointed by the book -the only printing material available today for ISC DHCP. Yes. This book will teach you something, especially some theoretical stuff for DHCP. However, when you finally site down to set up your first DHCP server for your LAN, even a very simple LAN, you would find that you have learned very little from this book. DHCP should not be that hard, but the authors made it complicated and confusing by putting too much theories and too few hands-on examples in this book.

For one of the most important parts in this filed, DHCP+DDNS, the authors did not provide readers any useful syntax and examples in the very short Chapter 22. The APENDIX B "ISC DHCP Server Configuration File Reference" is also poorly written. It is not organized alphabetically, and the authors asked you to refer to the index for what you want. When I try to search the word 'ddns-domain-name', I couldn't find it in the Index. In addition, on the first page of APENDIX B, the authors gave you two broken links to make you frustrated further. APPENDIX A is "Microsoft DHCP Server Examples." Where are the examples for UNIX? We all know that configuring DHCP on NT is a piece of cake.

My general impression is that the two authors know too much theories, but seriously lack hands-on experience on TCP/IP including DHCP. The other possibility is that they don't know how to make complicated knowledge and skills simple in order to make readers understand them easily. In other words, they are not good teachers and instructors. Good teachers make complicated things simple, and poor teachers make simple things complicated.

This book should have taught you everything for setting up DHCP, but it failed. You will have to spend lots of time to search the ISC DHCP archive, and ask people the basic questions about some syntaxes. The worse thing is that this is the only DHCP book you can get on the market today. The only good thing for me was that I bought the book from an eBay auction, and did not pay the full price... . The value of this poorly written book is definitely not worth the high price.

5 out of 5 stars Good beginners book and in the long run a good reference.......2000-08-30

This book will bring you up to speed very quickly if you're a beginner. If you already know about DHCP, this book makes a good reference manual. A lot of the content is repeated from one chapter to another, keeping you from having to flip back and forth to other chapters

5 out of 5 stars Outsanding, Accurate, and Comprehensive.......2000-08-03

This book provides an overview of the DHCP protocol itself, which is why I bought it. Byte-by-byte, the book explains the protocol and the client/server mechanism in play. But it also goes on to provide information about hte administration of networks using several different DHCP implementations. The more advanced information includes fitting a DHCP server into a complete network sever architecture--having your server interact with a DNS server, for instance.

Unfortuantely, the book does _not_ cover the meaning of--and often, not even deep descriptions of--the underlying settings. It doesn't make efforts at suggesting useful settings, or explain the tradeoffs that each setting might make. That seems fair: if it did, the book's scope would be pulled in the direction of providing a TCP/IP tutorial, too. For that information, you'll need to buy separate protocol-specific references.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book -- for all levels.......2000-01-04

This book is suitable for beginners because it starts from a basic introduction to the DHCP protocol and then progressively moves to more advanced topics, taking the time to explain things in depth along the way. It covers the ISC DHCP server as well as the NT 4 DHCP server, providing examples on both products. However, this book will also delight the advanced reader since it goes way beyond the RFCs into the subtleties the protocol as well as maintaining a reliable DHCP service. If you only buy one book on DHCP, this is the one to get.
