Greatest Book of All Time.......2003-07-17
Edward Gorey was a master of the macabre. his books were morbid and strange (sometimes unsettling, even), and the pictures made it all the worse. despite that, he was a wonderful story teller. his books were scary, yes, but in a comical sort of way. my grandpa used to read this book to my sister and me when we were young (a little bedtime story-type deal), and the pictures used to scare us half to death, but the book itself was very amusing. it's the sort of book one would expect to find in a Goth's house, i guess. i definately recommend this book to everyone. it would make a great edition to a Gorey collector's stash, or just to an avid book-lover's pile!

"MELISSA HUNTOON
She stood on the spacious, pillared veranda of her ancestral home, Great Oaks, looking out over the broad acres that had belonged to her family for two generations, and her eyes burned with anger and humiliation.
Today, her home, this grand old plantation, would go beneath the auctioneer's hammer. The bank had already foreclosed on the house and two thousand acres of rich Mississippi bottomland. Now everything else would be sold to the highest bidder.
Two men eagerly awaited the auction -- Simon Crouse and Luke Devereaux. The art collector and the gambler. One would try to buy Melissa, the other would attempt to win her. But both would have to contend with the pride and fury of a girl turned woman....
Melissa would soon have to sink or swim in the raging tide of love."

Book Description
Seventy child-friendly recipes and cooking activities from around the world will draw the entire family into the spirit and fun of preparing Jewish holiday celebrations. Covering the ten major holidays, each of the activities has a different focus--such as Eastern Europe, biblical Israel, contemporary America--and together they present a vast array of foods, flavors, and ideas.
The recipes are old and new, traditional and novel--everything from hamantashen to pretzel bagels, chicken soup with matzah balls to matzah pizza, fruit kugel to Persian pomegranate punch.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent compilation of recipes for the holidays! .......2005-11-21
When Bon Appetit and other prestigous publications give this one rave reviews, that's a hint that you might have a "find"...and they are right. From Sabbath to Passover, there are recipes that are delicious, generally very easy to prepare and clearly explained. Although designed for children, I think this one would be excellent for anyone who wants to become an excellent Jewish cook. It is like having a crash course in both the essentials and some special variations.
The book is extremely attractive and there are additions which make it special, such as suggested prayers, historical info about each holiday, great illustrations, etc.
Although the vast majority of the recipes are very simple, when one is a bit more complex, there are often step-by-step illustrations. An example would be Children's Cholent, where every single part of the process is pictured, right up to putting the dish in the oven.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the recipes were unique or new to me.
ANOTHER PLUS: The author suggests which parts of the recipe might be appropriate and easy for a child to handle and which should be done with supervision.
An excellent resource I use again and again........2003-11-12
I couldn't disagree more with the first review. With two small children, I rely heavily on this book as Jewish holidays come and go and have enjoyed many cooking experiences with my kids as a result. Furthermore, the recipes are consistently delicious! My kids and I have prepared Yemenite High Holiday Stew and Bread for Yom Kippur, Apple-Honey cupcakes, Hamantaschen, Aunt Lisl's Butter Cookies, and the ice-cream cupcake menorah featured on the cover, as well as a tender and delicious challah. There are many suggestions throughout for ways children can take part in the cooking, and often the menu suggestions accompanying each holiday have given me ideas of foods my children will actually eat. As a cook and an authority on Jewish cooking, Joan Nathan is no slouch; her contributions to the New York Times cooking section are significant and her adult-oriented cookbook "The Jewish Holiday Kitchen" is an exhaustive resource of Jewish dishes that is equally wonderful. In fact, I was reluctant to try this book because I doubted she could switch gears and write a children's cookbook that was really useable, but I contend she has done it! I can't imagine my cookbook library without this book.
A remedial recipe book- very limited CRAFTY ideas.......2003-09-25
I would not even give this book one star. I was VERY disappointed with this book. I was expecting a CRAFTY kitchen book for childen based on the pictures on the front cover. This book primarily consists of traditional recipes for the holidays but gives instructions such as child mixes this.. adult stirs that. Example of receipes include: grape juice, hallah, chicken soup, matzah balls, pot roast, peeling a pamagranet, etc. There is nothing unique or special about these recipes. If you are buying it for your children- don't. and if you are buying it for the recipes- don't. There are many other better Jewish holiday cookbooks out there to choose from.

Book Description
When it comes to comparing holidays, Jews might seem on first glance to have the short end of the stick. Christians have chocolate bunnies, candy canes, and blinking Santas. Jews have bitter herbs, nasty fruit rings, and gefilte fish in a glass jar. But even though Jews may not get a tree (or cheeky elves that want to become dentists), they have something better: an amazingly rich holiday tradition that most people (Jews included) don't completely understand. Jewish Holiday Fun. . .for You! reveals just what the Jewish holidays are all about.
Barbara Rushkoff, creator of the cult-favorite Jewish-themed zine Plotz, uses her snarky sensibility to provide a satirical yet affectionate deconstruction of each holiday, giving each one its own special pop culture spin. Riotously irreverent, but still perfectly appropriate as a seder gift, this very funny book is for everyone who's Jewish or who wonders what being Jewish is all about.
Customer Reviews:
A must-buy and great gift!.......2004-12-07
This book is a hilarious and light-hearted primer for jewish holidays. Informative for jews and non-jews alike, it makes the holidays come alive. Written with a wicked sense of humor, this is great reading, and would make a great gift. It looks amazing too, so it could function equally well as a coffee table book and as a bookshelf book. If you like the authors excellent 'zine Plotz and website www.plotzworld.com you'll ADORE this book.
Judaism-Not just for Jews!.......2004-12-03
The above review already tells you what a great book this is, so I will not re-invent the above review. I will speak from my own experience having bought this book for 3 people and what they told me post-during-reading.
Character #1: My mom, age 50-something
Mom loved this book because of the parts she got, the parts she was not sure she got and the parts with stories and recipes that made her laugh and even remember some new stories to tell us (the offspring)
Character #2: My "jewish" gal pal from summer camp, age, late "20's":
Now she got almost all of it and called me twice during the reading to tell me how funny the part about...well, I will let you read that part. I think she just ordered some for her camp gal pals. Notice the jewish was in quotes...she is born jewish but is not observant in the nyc sense, but jewish in the mill valley sense...she loved it of course.
Character #3: My pagan-buddhist-god-no-wants pal:
He loved it because he viewed it as both comments on living today in America as a "something" as well as for the humor and what he called collage-pop-judaica-esque art.
So, do yourself and a loved one a favor...buy this book, makes a great gift ANY TIME OF Year...Yes, Jews and others can gifts at times that are not December-centric...
Enjoy :)
The Perfect Gift for Today's Jew.......2004-11-19
I got two. One for me, and then one for my friend Laura who is just Jewish enough to not want a Christmas present but not so Jewish as to want something all Jewy.
Barbara (formerly Kligman, before she got married to author Douglas Rushkoff) Rushkoff was the editor of a zine I used to buy at Tower Records called Plotz. It was this crazy arty take on Judaism and pop culture, with all sorts of modern references like the Michelin Guide or Cliff Notes. It was the precursor to all the 'hip' Judaism things coming up today.
Now she's done a book, and it's about the funniest thing I've seen since those early National Lampoons. It takes each Jewish holiday and then recasts in totally artfully and realistically reproduced version of a book or magazine. So Chanukah is done as a TV guide for Jews during Christmas week, where the I Love Lucy marathon is actually Jewish episodes of Lucy. And Sukkot is like this old Sears catalogue of Sukkah kits you can buy and put together.
The book is produced by Rizzoli, so every page is superthick paper and full color, like an art book. Turns out the whole thing was designed by Sean Tejeratchi, who was the zine artist for Craphound, the art director of NYPress, and a famous record jacket designer. That's probably why it looks so good.
I can't say enough about this thing. It's really a coffee table book quality volume, with down-home humor and media satire that should be great confirmation of values for real Jews and really funny for reluctant modern Jews, too.
Customer Reviews:
Not All Fun and Games.......2006-01-04
Models are fascinating and with television shows like America's Next Top Model and Project Runway, the industry seems glamorous and pure despite all the hard work that goes into it. Ian Halperin's book helps to ground the public a bit after being saturated with positive bias for the industry.
Halperin went undercover as a new model from Canada whose Jewish looks were constantly branded as being much more like an actor than a model. However, despite the little success he had in the industry, he unearthed countless awful stories about the abuses of the industry. Saying that it is wrought with sex, drugs, and manipulation is an understatement. There is story after story about abuse, underage and non-consensual sex, fraud, and corruption.
The only problem with this book is that the stories start to become repetitive which makes them lose their effect. However, this is not the fault of the author; even he acknowledges that he began to become numb to the horror stories. It is just that there seem to be no rules that apply in the industry which allows it to run wild.
The chapters in this book are relatively short and cover a variety of subjects. Halperin discusses incidents with small time models as well as major events concerning the "big six."
There is no bibliography in this book, but it is obvious that the author did a lot of research to get his information. He cites specific people when possible, explains why some sources are listed as anonymous, and uses other books like Michael Gross's Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women.
For Pete's (or Kate's) sake, Please Give This Book A Chance.......2005-01-19
Obviously, the review below is bogus, crafted by some bored dimwit with a nothing better to do in life. This book reads extremely well and is heavily documented. Frankly, I suggest that its lucidity and creative way it's presented makes it the top fashion book I've read, and I've read them all. Please, give it a chance, you won't regret.
STOP! a waste of time and money.......2005-01-07
The only reason this gets 1 star is you can't give 0.
It is poorly written, poorly executed and does not even make sense. It is obviously written by someone who has little if any experience writing anything much less a book. It has to be self published; there is NO publisher out there that would print this mish mash garble. The positive reviews are very suspect at best. If you read them they all have the same writing style, written by the same person?
SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!
Astonishingly Great.......2004-12-02
Being a former model for 12 years, I cannot thank Mr. Halperin enough for his incredibly candid account of what the fashion industry is really like. In fact, I think that his undercover experiences could potentially save models from having horrific experiences - if they read the book. When I was a model, I was sexually harrassed on dozens of occasions. When I complained I was usually told to shut up and keep it to myself - or eles, I would get blacklisted and never work again. Thank you Mr. Halperin for not shutting up and telling it like it really is.
The sensationalist cover should tip you off..........2004-11-23
This book is so poorly written that I had a hard time taking it seriously. I am mystified by all the positive reviews. Most chapters read as if the author scribbled them down in the span of a few hours. Despite being a journalist, Ian Halperin seems to have no concept of letting stories speak for themselves. He can't describe anyone without tacking on a string of generic adjectives. He uses clichés with abandon and repeats himself to no end.
Halperin's reasons for writing this book are confusing. In the preface, he writes, "I wanted to expose this industry that thrives heartlessly on beauty as deception." Although this sentence makes little sense, it is clear that the author is horrified by the abuses and corruption in the industry (This is the major theme of the book). Yet he continues, "Through the information I present, I hope to build self-confidence, fuel modeling ambitions..." Fuel modeling ambitions? The book is devoted to describing how most aspiring models end up emotionally destroyed, in rehab or dead. I read the book in full, but Halperin does not present any coherent strategies to help future models avoid the pitfalls.
Awkward and ungrammatical (and sometimes questionable) statements further erode this book's credibility. One chapter opens with this sentence: "The supermodels of the nineties became a generation's most sought after figure." The unsophisticated language doesn't help, either. Halperin writes that one model has "big b***s".
Finally, Halperin closes with a chapter on the murder of Gianni Versace that has nothing to do with the rest of the book. If you can ignore the sloppy and repetitive writing, perhaps this is a somewhat illuminating exposé.
Book Description
This new version of the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game makes it easier than ever to start playing D&D immediately. It contains everything you need to have exciting D&D adventures, including a complete set of dice, four double-sided map tiles, a rulebook for each player, a rulebook for the Dungeon Master, and 12 pre-painted plastic miniatures (4 characters and 8 monsters) from the popular Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures Game line.
Customer Reviews:
okay, then it's over.......2007-08-14
I recently bought this game because I wanted to get into D&D and thought this would be a good place to start. It is okay if you have never played before and want to learn alittle bit on how to play dnd but you have to use premade characters and the adventure is short and not that great. I bought the three core rulebooks last night so I could get me and a couple other people into it more and have more fun with it. All together I would recommend anyone that has never played and wants to play to pick this game up. You get some cool miniatures and almost a full set of dice.
Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game (2006).......2007-06-09
This product does a very good job of introducing the player(s) to the D&D world. I would suggest it to anyone who has no experience with RPG's and wants to get involved with the granddaddy of them all. It does a nice job of walking the player(s) and the Dungeon Master(DM) through a few scenarios; and is a nice starting point to see if the game will be enjoyable without a high initial investment.
Need an experience person to be the Dungeon Master.......2007-04-20
My son really is enjoying this game. It is a great game for introducing people to the world of Dungeons and Dragons. I would STRONGLY recommend that you have an experienced Dungeons and Dragons person to be the Dungeon Master. The adventure and rules are completely inadequate for a first timer to be the Dungeon Master in that they do not address the various scenerios that arise from the game or give enough background for the adventure. Without an experienced person being the Dungeon Master, the game could end up being a disaster.
Good (at least for beginners).......2006-12-28
I recieved this as a christmas gift and I had never played D&D or an RPG before and i was very plaesed with the result!
I opened the box and the first thing to catch your eye is all the wonderfull miniature each in its own plastic bag(i have ead a review on here about the game not coming with stat cards so you cannot play the D&D miniature warband game but you can download and print these off the D&D site.
The rules:nice and strait forward i understood them very fast(Yes, these are very "dumbed" down rules for all us newbies)i played a few rounds by my self (being teh NPC's and teh PC's just to get a hang of it(with can be fun) and then a round with my older brother who thought it was ok but didnt realy get into it, but the next night i played with my sister and now we have been playing it all the time(people say this is more of a mini battle game but me and my sis had a whole game with no die rolling just good old fashioned RPG-ing)
and now i want to advance more so I ordered the D&D players kit(the day after i got the basic game of course) wich looks great!
one of the things i would like better would be to have seperate RPG stat cards for all teh monsters instead of having to flip through teh pages of teh DM book...but thats no biggie.
So I personaly think this is a great game!
Comparisons are odious, but inevitable.......2006-09-29
The components in this set are:
* 12 miniatures (4 heroes and 8 monsters)
* 4 map tiles, illustrated in color on both sides
* 6 dice (basic, solid colors with white numbers)
* 1 glossy sheet of counters (treasure chests, doors, etc.)
* 4 character booklets, 1 per player during the first adventures
* 1 Dungeon Master booklet, containing five adventures for the characters at level 1
* Advanced Rulebook, which includes level 2 character sheets for the four characters and a sixth adventure for the characters after they've reached level 2 by completing the First Adventure Book
Contrary to the Wizards of the Coast web site, my set has 6 dice, not 7, and 12 miniatures, not 16. There is only one ten-sided die, not two. The actual game box lists the correct components.
I think the components are well worth the money. You get a nice set of miniatures (including a dragon), some colorful map tiles, and a few basic dice. The rules booklets are a different approach, and I think an improvement, from the previous versions' use of character sheets. Each player gets their own character information, plus the basic rules, in one booklet. The Dungeon Master gets a booklet for the first adventures and uses the Advanced booklet after that.
This game will most likely be reviewed in comparison with its predecessors, the earlier D&D Basic Game and the D&D Adventure Game. In comparison to the earlier Basic Game, this set has, on the con side, four fewer miniatures and less interesting-looking dice. On the pro side this set has booklets with more information for each player than just character sheets, character sheets for level 2 in the Advanced Rulebook, and a bigger, bluer dragon.
On the true neutral side, the adventures in this set are presented as a series of one-shot excursions, between which the characters return to town. I haven't played them yet, but I'm guessing this will give players the chance to learn more incremently, take breaks, and talk about what just happened in a different way than with the previous set, which had one, long dungeon. But, even the previous set advised a return to town before encountering the final monster.
Given the quality of components in the Adventure Game, which has a glossy paper map and counters instead of miniatures, and originally sold for just under US$10, this current set is a bargain at the current price.
I like the Adventure Game and I like both versions of the Basic Game. I do not see the Basic Game 2006 as an improvement or enhancement of either of these sets, but simply a different approach. Although you get fewer miniatures and dice without flash, you do get another way to learn the rules. The change from character sheets to booklets, the inclusion of level 2 character sheets, and the separation of the game play into shorter adventures leading to a final, longer adventure are the major changes I see in this latest set. All of these changes give new players a slightly different way to learn the game.
As I am interested in games as learning tools, and love to see games whose creators seem to care about making the learning process easier, I thought this Basic Set's focus on changing the pacing of the first adventures and the amount of information given to players was worth the purchase in itself. And, now, my black dragon has someone to fight.
For slightly fewer components and an interesting, new approach to learning the game, I give the Basic Game 2006 four stars.
Happy gaming.

Get instant access to the UNIX commands and functions you need with this fast and friendly reference guide to all things UNIX. UNIX For Dummies Quick Reference, 4th Edition, clues you in to the most popular and essential parts of UNIX: X Windows managers, text editors, sending and receiving electronic mail, and networking.
Starting with the UNIX shell and moving steadily deeper inside the UNIX environment, UNIX For Dummies Quick Reference, 4th Edition, cuts to the chase with clear, concise answers to all your UNIX questions. From the basics of entering commands, organizing files and directories, and determining which shell you're using, this valuable little reference book steers you in the right direction. More than 100 basic UNIX commands are alphabetically sorted for easy lookups, and advanced topics on X Windows managers, text editors, and online components are all just a few pages away.
Why bother with the hassles of sorting through thousands of pages of text when the answers you need are all right here, tucked inside a lay-flat binding that lets you keep your book open to the page you're reading. Could using a UNIX reference be any easier?
Customer Reviews:
Handy book, but you might need help if you are not technical.......2005-11-06
When I review Unix books, I come from a totally non-techical perspective. I always look at it from a lay-person's perspective, as someone who has to learn to use Unix because that is the only operating system available to use.
This is a handy referene book, if you have a basic knowledge of Unix, and are comfortable with using the OS. Sometimes, the explanations tend to be a bit lengthy, and that is something you will find in almost all Unix-related books. So, don't despair if you are unable to follow through completely, reach out to a live person to help you. At least that person will know that you tried to solve the issue, before asking for their help.
the Decent book!.......2005-04-08
Ok guys this book isn't bad. It is very descriptive and well written. The problem is there's much of water, long blah-blah-blah and so on. It takes too long to start and then looOOoong leaps from one real problem to another. But it is "for dummy" book it supposed to be like that with all explanations back to the beginning.
I have found here on Amazon training DVD "UNIX Essentials" by TechnoProfessor that nobody knows about. It is very cool one, straight to the subject, very useful. I coupled this book with DVD and I believe I learned more then my friend who attended $2000 class.
This book is good , but DVD is DVD, it is like you have class at home. This book is very useful though. When you start with UNIX it is like starting with violin:you have to practice every day and this book paired with the DVD gives much of what you will ever need.
Quick Reference is the strong point.......2000-10-11
The Quick Reference guide is exactly that. A quick reference to allow you to get specific information about the aspect in UNIX you are having a problem with. I have a couple UNIX books and I find myself coming to this one, because it keeps it in a nutshell. If you are looking for something to "learn" UNIX, I would keep looking, but if you have read the UNIX books and now you need "one" guide to keep at your fingertips, this would be it.
Book Description
Linux For Dummies Quick Reference, 3rd Edition, takes you straight to the heart of this revolutionary new operating system from selecting and installing the right version to handling standard networking and system administration tasks. The book features an alphabetical listing of common shell commands, keyboard shortcuts for working with e-mail and the X-Window system, and tons of tips on how to handle DOS, Windows, Mac, and UNIX files. And the book's special lay-flat binding means that the information you need is always right at your fingertips.
Customer Reviews:
A good reference.......2006-10-25
The "quick reference" in the title means that it's a reference, a tool, not a tutorial on when and why to use commands.
It's best function is explaining switches on commands. If you've ever wondered "I wonder if I can get grep to do THAT?" or "I wonder how to plug in sed here?" then this is the book for you. Any deeper knowledge required and you'll need to get one of the other books on Linux introduction.
And the author's preference for vi over EMACS isn't really proven, it's just that some of the more esoteric of commands in vi are not readily apparent, but lend themselves to description in a quick reference. I mean if you feel threatened by vi, please, by all means, use EMACS ;-)
Not exactly what I was expecting.......2003-07-08
I was hoping for a manual that provided more of a quick reference to both the basic wokings and commands of Linux than an intro to the various apps found within that OS, such as emacs, vi and pico. Knowing how to network, send email and FTP is all good, but those are topics that should be explained in greater detail in a regular IDG book, not skimmed over in a quick-guide.
Takes the edge off.......1999-03-17
I recently bought this for the IS manager that will replace me in weeks to come. I bought it for what it was intended to be. A "Quick Referance". This is not a book that will describe exact procedures, or how to negotiate your way through extedned server calls. It's great for someone with a working knowledge of Linux that finds themself asking "What was that command again?".
Nice reference!.......1999-02-07
It's not that bad, very usefull
Not for Dummies - or anyone else........1998-09-03
A strange and thrown together book. The most disturbing aspect being that the book dosen't really describe the included software. Long on theory and short on precise syntax, not well cross referenced and even the "Cheat Sheet" in front was of little help. I think most Linux users already know the *WHY* but a newbie needs exact and precise descriptions of what to input. On the plus side, the book would help take the edge off of the anxiety someone who had never heard of Linux (or computers) might be expected to feel. I found it money wasted.
