Information On "Out Of The Mainstream" Subjects Too.......2001-01-15

In 1958, in a small avante-garde art film theater in Dallas, Texas (Yes, Dallas!) I saw a Russian made film of Dostoevsky's "The Idiot." A stark, realistic, black and white film, it made a lasting impression on me.

In later years I could never find a reference to this film anywhere. I almost began to think that I had imagined seeing it. Finally, along came my copy of FILM DIRECTORS: A COMPLETE GUIDE. There it was! I really had seen it. It was directed by Ivan Pyriev, a Soviet director who had died in 1968.

My point here is that this guide to directors is much more than one might guess, having complete sections on subjects such as "Notable Directors of the Past," and being cross referencing by film titles.

It is of course, useful for more mundane purposes such as finding the names of agents, or winning your bet on film trivia.

How to approach the Holocaust and its relationship to late twentieth-century society? While some stress the impossibility of comprehending this event, others attempt representations in forms as different as the nonfiction novel (and Hollywood blockbuster) Schindler's List, the documentary Shoah, and the comic book Maus. This problem is at the center of Michael Rothberg's book, a focused account of the psychic, intellectual, and cultural aftermath of the Holocaust.

Drawing on a wide range of texts, Michael Rothberg puts forth an overarching framework for understanding representations of the Holocaust. Through close readings of such writers and thinkers as Theodor Adorno, Maurice Blanchot, Ruth Klger, Charlotte Delbo, Art Spiegelman, and Philip Roth and an examination of films by Steven Spielberg and Claude Lanzmann, Rothberg demonstrates how the Holocaust as a traumatic event makes three fundamental demands on representation: a demand for documentation, a demand for reflection on the limits of representation, and a demand for engagement with the public sphere and commodity culture. As it establishes new grounding for Holocaust studies, his book provides a new understanding of realism, modernism, and postmodernism as responses to the demands of history.

Contemporary Theory Meets Historiography.......2000-12-05

When discussing a particularly strange moment in Philip Roth's _Patrimony_ where a Holocaust survivor's memoirs turn out to be an account of his sexual exploits, Michael Rothberg points out that "there might be something pornographic about making images and ultimately commodities out of the Holocaust. It is as if the fundamental obscenity of the events themselves cannot be represented without a _pornographic_ contamination of the person doing the representing." Throughout his study of Holocaust representations, Rothberg is painfully aware of this danger of contamination and commodification at the same time as he himself, of course, has become part of this ever-increasing discourse on the Holocaust. What saves him and his book is not only an awareness of the dangers and his consequent self-consciousness but also the very method and theoretical apparatus that underlie his study.

As the title _Traumatic Realism_ indicates, Rothberg strives to think simultaneously the two opposing tenets of Holocaust representation: on the one hand, we find an obsessive demand for realism in the form of verifiable truths, facts, and details; on the other hand, the utter extremity of the Holocaust seems to have removed it from our field of experience, thus foreclosing any ability to represent it realistically and as continuous with our reality. This focus on the extraordinary results in representations that fetishize the impossibility to comprehend the Holocaust by stressing its traumatic aspects only.

Rather than trying to decide on one approach or the other as the "right" one, Rothberg succeeds in showing how both modes are compelling and necessary at the same time as neither one can be sufficient or comprehensive. Nor does he attempt to find a common ground between the two by creating a happy union but instead emphasizes the radical antinomy the two constitute. In all the various texts he discusses--philosophical, literary, and cultural--Rothberg exposes the tension between the two approaches within the texts themselves, i.e., he shows us how the representations already have this dichotomy built in.

One particularly compelling example is his discussion of Charlotte Delbo's trilogy _Auschwitz and After_, a powerful account that coincidentally is used as exemplary by two very opposing theorists, Lawrence Langer and Tzvetan Todorov. Using Delbo's moving testimony, Rothberg shows how both Todorov's emphasis on the normal and everyday as well as Langer's attempt to establish the concentrationary universe as utterly exceptional and extra-moral are insufficient. In other words, his discussion reveals the need to simultaneously think the opposition, an approach warranted by both the structure and contents of many survivor testimonies that perform the juxtaposition of the normal and the unthinkable at the same time as they describe the absurd contradictions and oppositions of camp life.

Moving easily between a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, Rothberg discusses Holocaust representations as varied as Ruth Klüger's highly self-conscious eyewitness testimony, Art Spiegelman's comic book _Maus_, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. One thing all his selections have in common, however, is the tension between the traumatic, nonrepresentable scar left by the concentrationary universe and the need and desire to account for the camp world in all its parts.

_Traumatic Realism_ is a well-written book that revisits familiar sites like _Maus_ and _Schindler's List_ with new and insightful readings at the same time as it introduces some lesser-known texts like Delbo's and Klüger's. What distinguishes his book, however, is the clear thesis that drives all his readings, and it is this thesis that has an impact beyond the scope of the particular texts discussed. Bridging the traditional gap between postmodern and poststructural theory and historiographic approaches to the Holocaust, Rothberg shows himself an expert in both as he lets the two encounter one another and communicate over some of the less traditional texts of the literary canon of the Holocaust.

Personally, I found the book exciting and stimulating, both in its command of theory and the ease with which Rothberg integrates it as well as for his close readings and particular interpretations. I would recommend this book to any student of Holocaust literature and anyone interest in the issues of representation in the postmodern age.

One of the most invaluable references I have in my library.......2006-10-13

I'll keep this brief, as my title says it all. I have been developing access applications on a professional level for many years. Have several applications that large companies use to run there business. This cookbook has helped me in more ways then I can count. I wish I could find more like it. I use it just as a cookbook. Look thru to find a similiar situation that I am trying to solve. The examples are written very well. The code is very exact and on the money. While most of the examples listed are not always exactly like what I'm trying to solve, it definitely gets the creative juices flowing on how to solve my problem.

The other good things, there are several useful "tips" that you can use to implement in many of your applications that will help the users have a better experience.

Definitely a must have if you wish to write serious applications.

Recipes for Access Developer Success.......2005-05-21

The Access Developer's Handbook Set (search ISBN: 0782140114) and in particular, Volume 1: Desktop Edition (search ISBN: 0782123708) is my definitive resource to approximately 4 years of Access development. I've got more stickies and highlights in this set than all other Access books combined. So when I came across the Access cookbook and realized that the same two indispensible authors (Getz & Litwin) put together a resource of Access developer solutions, I had to have it.

This book has not let me down. It is certainly geared towards the intermediate to advanced Access professional developers who already understand the basics of Access and more importantly, who also understand the shortcomings of Access and the benefits of getting around those shortcomings. There are about 170 solutions in this book that are segmented into 18 chapters of high-level topics such as Queries, Forms, XML, UI, VBA, Windows APIs, even Smart Tags. I would be really surprised to find someone who picked up this text, thumbed through the solutions, and found that there was nothing they could get out of this book.

I would say that if you are developing a professional Access front-end and/or database, you owe it to yourself to buy this book and review each solution before you release or ship your product. I did, and found either new answers and existing improvements to many of the things I was struggling with during my development cycles.

Access Developers.. this is a must have!.......2005-01-20

When I started my job, my first assignment was develop several Access databases. What they wanted was beyond what I knew of Access. After buying this book and Access Database Programming and Design, I was well on my way to develop a quite advanced Access database application. I would ask myself, "I wonder if I can..." After consulting this book for the anwser, BAM! I found it there. This book covers everything from simple VBA to advanced techniques such as incorporating a email system into a database, linked dropdown combo boxes using SQL, and creating VB Form control that tells you who all is currently in a database using ADO and VBA! I would say anyone wanting to cook a mean Access database should definitely pick this one up. It is an invaluable reference if you want to develop professional Access databases with incredible functionality!

I'm a ColdFusion guy, so read this review with that in mind:.......2004-11-12

This book I would recommend for people who use Access as their back end, and need to add some automation to their back end. It deals mostly with using VBA to solve problems, like:
* How to create an input box where you can get some better info than the standard VBA one
* Call Excel functions, and apply them to Access data
* Figure out which users have a shared database open, if you're
doing a blended Access/CF solution
* Managing report printing (see next set of bullets)

I recommend checking out this book under the following circumstances:
* You have internal and external clients hitting your database. In a situation like that, you can have your internal users access the database using a well-designed Access application, which this book will give you some tricks on how to create.
* In the alternative, you want to manage and analyze your data, and create print reports. That's where Access just as a stand-alone application gives a substantial advantage over any Web technology.

For a ColdFusion developer, there are some topics in this book that probably wouldn't do much good:
* Adding Smart Tags functionality to a database - if you're expanding beyond the reach of Microsoft Office, Smart Tags prove to be a nifty proprietary parlor trick
* Using Access' security management tools to manage user rights to database objects. If I run a Windows server, I would use Challenge and Response to create NTFS based permissions on my pages in my application that manage data. Otherwise, I'll use application-based usernames and passwords, same net result.
* Exporting Access data as XML using pre-defined schemas. Not bad, but ColdFusion has far better technology.

Don't get me wrong - those last three bullets are not any disrespect to this well-written, well-organized guide. I'm just looking at, "What topics would interest you if you're a ColdFusion developer?"

If you do want to learn more about Access database development as an art unto itself, this is not the place to begin. This is the place to arrive at.

Unique resource for experienced access users.......2004-07-29

Those familiar with Access may not be familiar with O'Reilly's Cookbook series. The Cookbook series takes common tough problems and provides simple recipes, often with multiple alternative takes, to solve the problem. The value is not only in reference, it also shows you new techniques for using Access or VB is new ways that you may not have thought of.

I highly recommend this book for any experienced Access user, or anyone looking to become an Access expert. This book will stretch your skills and make it easier to nod your head yes when your boss asks you to solve some tricky problem.
