Book Description
This book is the first to present a general overview of the tax treatments of various financial instruments in four important EC member states: France, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. International tax specialists from these countries have planned and drafted this text in accordance with the comparative and pragmatic idea underlying the Series on International Taxation. For a long time now, enterprises have been using various financial instruments to finance their operations and to reinvest their liquid assets. The variety of these instruments has increased over the past 15 years through the development of both hybrid and risk-covering instruments. This publication clearly states the most important tax differences and indicates those areas where EC harmonization is imperative. Furthermore, it allows the reader to examine financial instruments, not only in terms of their independent functions, but also their functions in the context of different tax systems. Audience: Ideal for consultants and students in international tax law.

What crazy concoction will Jan pull out of his bag of tricks?

A testatment to my obscure taste in comics........2006-03-01
I love this series. The writer of this comic new exactly what he was doing when he write this. If there was an American TV show of this I would watch in an instant. Alas It seems the availablilty of this comic is some what sarce where I live. You would think living near chiacgo and being next to a bunch comic stores would help right? NOOOOOOO! I can't find the second volume anywhere. (Except for here.) It seems this is a classic example of what I want to is what other people don't seem to be to interested in. I love watch the character Jan talk about food and how he can really manipulate to be just about anything he wants it to be. The only problem is that DIAMOND DIRECT DIDN'T HAVE ISSUES 2 AND 3! Comic book distributors didn't have the freakin' comics! I went to other store only to see the had all the later issues. My quest must continue!
A New Battle Begins.......2005-10-28
I highly recommend this series to anyone who has even a mild interest in cooking and/or the 'Iron Chef' tv series. This is shonen but, hey, I am still hoping Jan & Kiriko will end up as a couple eventually. Maybe Okonogi should lock them in the freezer together.
This is Volume 8 in the 'Iron Wok Jan' managa series and it packs a lot of goodies! First of all, it winds up the spring roll battle where Okonogi surprisingly enough becomes a serious contendor! Food critic Otani has not given up his long-standing grudge against Jan and uses his influence to place the mysterious Gogyo in the Head Chef position at Hotel Mirage (yes, that was Dan's position . . . ). But who are the two mysterious girls bearing a gift to Otani at the all-star opening bash at the Mirage? And a hyped-up televised battle begins between Gogyo and Jan (to be continued in Volume 9).
"This is my noodle cooking! Ready for this? Yaaaahhh!!".......2005-10-26
If you're curious about those small-format books with numbers on the spines that are taking up an ever-increasing amount of space in your local bookstore, or if you think manga are only about kung-fu psychic robots from outer space and saucer-eyed girls in sailor outfits whose magic unicorns help them become popular at school, the "Iron Wok Jan" volumes (17 and counting, last I checked) are an excellent place to see what the field has to offer.
All the ingredients (excuse the expression) of classic shonen manga - that's Japanese for "comics for boys" - are here: the grandfather whose memory must be honored, the stern mentor, the stammering sidekick, and the cute girls (who in this case are packing 42G casabas under their cooking uniforms). Then you have the stare of determination and the overcoming of obstacles. And of course you've got to have lots of gaping mouths, sweat beads and speed lines. It all adds up to a dementedly intense narrative that somehow manages not to take itself very seriously.
Volume 4, for example, has the arrogant demon-eyed Jan Akiyama fiercely competing against his proud but virtuous colleague Kiriko Gobancho and the vampy Celine Yang (who for some reason is translated as a southern belle) at the "Iron Chef"-like 1st National Chinese Cuisine Cooking Contest "to become the greatest chef in Japan". Although Jan and Kiriko have made a side wager that the loser must leave the restaurant where they both work, there is even more than that at stake. Ultimately this is a battle between the three contestants' respective *philosophies* of cuisine.
Jan, of course, insists that "Cooking is a competition". "I'll bathe you all in blood!" he taunts his rivals at one point - lolling a Gene Simmons length tongue. "Akiyama's cooking knows no defeat!" By contrast, Kiriko says that "Cooking is about heart" - and demonstrates it by choosing a dish that she invented to help kids eat their vegetables - "Coral noodles! This is my weapon!" And Celine, as befits a woman with her spectacular bust, holds that "Cooking is about abundance" - "To me, cookin's about how far you can go with flavah, aroma, and beauty."
Once the battle begins, the reader is treated to some bravura flurries of action cartooning at its best - especially when Jan pulls out the knife-shaved noodles trick handed down to him by his dead grandfather. (Who naturally appears spectre-like in the background to exhort him to valor.) Anyone who has enjoyed the original "Iron Chef" will feel right at home with the proceedings - complete with know-everything Dr. Yukio Hatori-style commentary by Kiriko's uncle as he observes from the stands filled with gasping awe-struck spectators, and Kiriko's post-battle reflection that "I did the best I could! There were no oversights."
So whose cuisine reigns supreme? Well, you would have to get Volume 5 to find out - since manga storytelling takes up vastly more pages than American-style comics. But if you enjoy food or authentic glimpses into a truly foreign culture, and don't mind some "salty" language that would never make it into one of our kid's titles, Jan will deliver the goods.
Or to put it in his own boastful words to the judges: "Got it, fellas?"
Out of television, in with illustration. A MANGA!!!!!!!.......2004-09-22
I absolutely love this book. A must-see!!!! Its tell the story of a young hot-shot, extremely cocky chef, Jan Akiyama, working at the Gobancho Resturant as a traniee but he is extremely proud to think that his cooking is better than others. He still have much more to learn. Sure, the comic genre will blow your big mind away when he comes up with something unique and creative dishes yet strange and bizzare. Its also feature some cool little martial art moves in the competition. Jan is not the only one, but there are other new prodigy in the cooking field is Kiriko Gobancho, and Cilene Yang (Big busty girl) complete against him as well. Each of them have different cooking philosophy. This comic will sure laugh your roundy belly till you pee in your pants. This is cooking manga managed to keep the reader entertaining than the cooking television. Buy it, I recommmend it.
Expertly served up, with lots of ham.......2003-04-12
This is volume one of the "Iron Wok Jan" series- new volumes are coming out on a monthly basis. It's a bit shy of 200 pages, b&w, in the original Japanese format (that is, backwards). This volume introduces us to cocky young chef Jan, who cooks only to defeat his opponents! If this sounds over the top, it assuredly is- but you'll be caught up in the high melodrama and the bizarre recipes. Now that Food Network is out of new episodes of "Iron Chef," there's no better place to get that "they're eating what?!" thrill.

Buy Now at Amazon Which is On Sale for Only $7.95.......2007-09-06
This book contains headlines, malapropisms, school essays, parental notes to teachers, lawyer-witness dialogues, signs and other assaults on the English language that provide hours of chuckles and retelling to those who have not read it.
When you read a want ad that reads: "Mixing bowl set designed to please a cook with round bottom for efficient beating," or the headline "Stiff Opposition Expected to Casketless Funeral Plan," you have to laugh.
It also reminds me of what a boss once told me: You can always deny what you said; you can never deny what you wrote.
This book is "overpriced, and worth every penny of it."
You can buy this at Amazon which is on sale for $7.95.
Have A Good Laugh!.......2007-05-10
This book was recommende to my daughter by a college professor in 1990. I bought it at the time and read it lying down. I laughed so hard, I had to sit up... I have bought several copies since then as gifts, as I did this latest one. I lecture on the Healing Power Of Humor, and use lines form this book. It is a book you do not have to read from cover to cover in order, you can simply open a page and have a good laugh any time.
Hilarious.......2007-01-20
My mom has had this book for years, and it is no wonder she never got rid of it even though it is now brutally beaten up. Organized into sections, the bloopers people have made in essays, signs, even newspapers are worth buying this book for because of how shockingly hilarious they can be. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fluent in English and has even a little sense of humor. It will keep you entertained for a long tme.
Sometimes anguishing, somtimes funny.......2005-08-24
As a compendium of humorous ways that people misuse the English language, "Anguished English" is comprehensive, if not superb. Lederer treats various categories of language errors - bloopers, mixed metaphors, mistranslations , etc. - in separate chapters. "The World According to Student Bloopers" -- a running history of the world allegedly taken from real student written responses -- is often hilarious. Who knew that King Solomon had 300 wives and 700 porcupines, or that Sir Francis Drake *circumcised* the world with a 100-foot clipper? I also enjoyed the chapter on two-headed headlines, some of which took some work to uncover their second meaning. "IKE SAYS NIXON CAN'T STAND PAT" is fairly obvious, but "CARTER PLANS SWELL DEFICIT" took a second or two to puzzle out.
The biggest drawback to the book is that other than or Lederer's short and sometimes forced introductions to each chapter, the book is basically a series of lists, ordered by topic, with no indication of source. Though written in 1978 before the Internet truly got underway, the book often resembles the annoying "funny" e-mails that circulate today on the web. In Lederer's defense, I suspect that some of today's e-mails are actually rip-off's of "Anguished English." But it would have added to his efforts if he had described the process of accumulating his trove of malapropisms, informing us about the source, rather than just laying them out, naked on the ice, as it were. That would have given the reader a bit more to chew on than the warmed over fare offered here, some of which seem too perfect to be true. For instance, it's hard to believe that the journalist who wrote, "IS THERE A RING OF DEBRIS AROUND URANUS?" didn't know exactly what he/she was doing. Yet this headline is offered as an unintentional mistake.
For all its faults and excesses, "Anguished English" is fun and sometimes interesting. Consider it a good buy for a young person interested in learning the subtleties of the English language by studying its misuse
Everyone makes mistakes.......2005-03-09
This book is a great wonderful reminder that everyone makes mistakes, and the are often quite funny! Anguished English will keep you in stitches. The "History of the World" as given through student essays is particularly interesting. Until now, I had no idea that the residents of Moscow were called Mosquitoes! Even more outrageous "facts" can be found throughout this delightful look at the English language.

HILARIOUS.......2004-10-01
This is one of the funniest books I have EVER read. I can't read it public as I inevitably end up laughing very loudly. Definately worth getting.
Funny, funny, funny!.......2003-06-27
This is one of the funniest books! Make sure you're sitting down, or better yet, lying down whe you read this book. You would also be well-advised to take this book in small doses, if you don't want to die laughing.... :-) Grammar has never been so funny. Then again, I'm not sure if I ought to laugh or cry at how the English language is murdered :-) The drawings in the book are also hilarious.
This book is a most enjoyable way to learn about how not to make mistakes in your writing. It has lots of great lines you can pull out to amuse people with, ( eg. Headline - Milk Drinkers Are Turning to Powder). It would also be great reading during the summer, in preparation for English classes. Absolutely loved it. I also hightly recommend his other books.
One of the few sure-fire laughs in print........1998-11-11
"The World According to Student Bloopers," a section of Lederer's book, has been widely pirated on the Internet and is thus familiar to many, even though they may not know its original source. There's a reason why this text has echoed around the world: One cannot read it without laughing. Other sections of the book, all of which deal with the many misuses, distortions and double-entendres encountered in everyday English usage, aren't quite so laugh-packed, but are still well worth the trip.

Book Description
The importance of temple ritual in constituting political dominance in South India has been well documented. In this vivid and compelling study of caste and ritual in rural Tamilnadu, Diane P. Mines focuses not only on the temples of the socially powerful, but even more so on the powerful temples of the socially weak. Drawing on phenomenological and existential anthropology, she argues that the village is a heterogeneous reality made and remade by its residents through their own activity. Exploring the intersection of politics, ritual, caste, and other forms of social inequality, this ethnography presents a new view of the village and argues for its reemergence as a unit of analysis.

Develop a champions repertoire.......2001-03-24
This book is just another typically fine book from Shamkovich and Schiller. They give a great account of what Kasparov tries to get in the opening and how he goes about them. The introduction is also great...the authors tell you how to develop an opening repertoire and what Kasparov does when his preparation goes awry.A great buy.
Customer Reviews:
Staggering.......2003-11-24
This is a staggering work by the greatest player to ever play the Scheveningen variation, and this is a dense stream of verbal explanation along with plentiful variations. This was published when Kasparov was world #2 in 1983, and he had something to prove. To read his analysis of the variation that he virtually owns is a major treasure for chess fans (it is as if Fischer had written a treatise on the Najdorf). It is surprising how verbal the book is, with constant textual evaluations and analysis of positions and ideas. This one knocked me off my feet, and made me a devotee of the Scheveningen. It must be tracked down and purchased.

Book Description
There are almost as many programming languages these days as there are dialects at a Washington cocktail party. Among them all, however, C++ remains a favorite, especially for beginners. C++ is fast, powerful, fully compiled, and portable. If you’ve thought about learning programming, it’s a great place to start. And if you’re already experienced with C++, you probably know a well-organized reference guide makes a programmer’s life a lot easier.
C++ All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies is a guide that grows with you. It’s organized into seven convenient minibooks, each devoted to a particular aspect of C++. So whether you’re a beginner just learning the lingo, or a veteran who wants to find out how to write a Web service in C++ .NET by using the Managed Extension to C++ (and who actually knows what that means!) you can find the answers quickly and easily.
If you’re about to venture into C++ programming for the first time, Minibook I begins at the beginning and covers all the basic stuff you need to know. You’ll be ready to join the big kids when you reach the subsequent minibooks, which cover
- Understanding objects and classes, including UML and design patterns
- Fixing problems, debugging your code, and choosing a good debugger
- Advanced C++ programming
- Reading and writing files, with coverage of stream programming
- C++ .NET, which shows you how to program for Microsoft’s latest product, create Web services, build assemblies, and more
- Visual Studio 6.0 and MFC, featuring a discussion of writing software for Windows with Microsoft Foundation classes
No matter how accomplished a C++ programmer you are – or aren’t – there will always be times when you need a reference guide. C++ All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies gets you started with C++ programming, takes you as far as you want to go, and makes it easy to find out more whenever you want.
Customer Reviews:
Good C++ book. covers many topics.......2007-04-17
This book is a great book for begginers as it teaches many of the begginer topics. I think he writes easy to understand language and teaches you well. If you are just begging programming i highly recommend this book although a 2nd edition is going to be needed soon as some of the software may be getting dated. anyways excellect book i recommend it for new comers. ( also note i code as a hobby so im no expert)
First few programs are Windows-specific - fails on a Mac.......2006-11-19
The very first program in this book fails in XCode on OS X for it uses a Windows-specific subroutine: system("PAUSE"); will not work on a Mac since this subroutine does not adhere to ANSI C++. The worst part is that the routine is being used in several other programs in the book. If you're thinking of learning C++ on a Mac, this is not your book. I don't understand how the author can claim the book teaches ANSI C++ when its first few programs clearly show it doesn't.
Don't be misled.......2005-12-08
The Title of this book is "C++ All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies".
However after reading this book it is quite obviously aimed at users of Microsoft products on Microsft systems. C++ is a multi-system language and any book calling itself a "C++ All-in-One Desk Reference" should be demonstrating the language in a pure form, such as the excellent "C All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies" book by Dan Gookin.
This book either needs to be rewritten to accurately reflect the title or the title needs to be changed to accurately reflect the content, maybe "C++ on Microsoft All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies".
If you need to learn C++ in a pure form then find another title.
Book has lots of topics, but it is not organized and written well........2005-09-06
In the first section, I found TOO MANY geeky jokes and I found that very annoying. I know I read Sams teach yourself C++ in 21 days a few years back, and I felt at that time I got a pretty decent understanding. Now, even though I'm just trying to refresh my memory on C++, I feel the book does not do a good job of teaching me...
That said, I like that the book has lots of topics, if I get only a general idea of stuff.
I would recommend, though, to check out other books and get a glance through this book to see if you can follow it before buying this one...
author-reader interaction style and very helpful.......2004-07-14
This book is all you need to get through C++ and MFC. It is fun to read because it feels like the author is really talking to you as he uses humor and gives some background info. I enjoyed reading this book and gained a true understanding of C++ and a few interesting facts about it like why it is C++, not just C+ (++ actually means +1 in equations for this language). this is a must-have C++ book.

Customer Reviews:
The Best "C" Book, Period........2007-09-07
If you need to learn the C language, there is no better book than the "C All-In-One Desk Reference". The book is FUN to read, and gently (and effectively) takes you from the simplest of C concepts like variables, conditional statements and loops, through pointers, references, and arrays, to advanced topics like double-linked lists. The book is OK as a reference, but it EXCELS at presenting the C language to the new programmer. No other technical book in my personal library has helped me (and my career) as much as this one.
Fantastic Jargon Free 'C' programming reference .......2007-04-02
This book is invaluable as a reference for the C programming language. It doesn't matter if you know a little or a lot about the C programming language this book caters for all levels. This book features a lot of working program examples and allows the reader to easily interact with the book whilst putting any knowledge gained from the book's content into practice.
Excellent Resource!.......2007-02-28
Great resource for any beginning programmer or Computer Science student. As a student-this book's information was arranged more logically than the textbook we were required to buy for my computer science class.
Plenty of examples!
The text is well written, and very easy to read-speaks to your level!
Excellent intro or review.......2006-10-18
If you are a newcomer to C, buy this book. If you are a rusty veteran, like I was -- out of practice with C but wanting to get back in -- buy this book. Start at the beginning, work thru the exercises, and you'll get to a respectable level of sophistication very shortly. Gookin is methodical, thorough, and humorous (without being silly), and covers all the main issues in C including pointers (several good chapters on this one point :-), functions, structures, and linked lists. The examples he gives you to help you thru the coding exercises are clear and easy to follow, and should serve as handy models for you own coding in the future.
It doesn't hurt to have a copy of Kernigan & Richie to review the standard functions and header files as he covers them, and to ensure that you become familiar with the KR writ.
a tad bit false advertised.............2006-03-16
This is a great book and I learned a lot about programming with it. Dan seems to be a good author, and he takes you through it one step at a time.
On the back of the book it says:
1.Understand the C skeleton and source code
2.Use conditional statements, constants and variables, strings,
arrays, and functions
3.Debug your code
4.Program games and graphics
5.Develop programs in Windows® and Linux®
Umm... litle problem on number 4...
This book has some sample game source code, which is pretty decent, but it barely even touches on graphics! I have a little programming experience, so I got this book to strenghthen my knowledge of C and to get into some graphics programming... and I didn't find any!
Overall, this is a great book to begin learning, and/or solidifing your knowledge of, the C programming language.
