      Book Description

The twin sons of Harry Keogh, the Necroscope, have taken very different paths. Nathan as his father's powers--to talk to the dead, to travel instantly through space. Like Harry, this new Necroscope fights evil wherever he finds it.His twin, Nestor, has become the most horrifying evil imaginable: a shape-shifting, blood sucking Wamphyi Lord! Devoid of human feeling, Nestor and his companion, the beautiful, malevolent Wratha the Risen, hunt without mercy. The battle between the brothers mirrors the war between vampires and humans. On mankind's side: terrible weapons brought from Earth by Nathan's allies. But the vampires are numerous and powerful, and neither side has a clear advantage....until Nathan and his legions of the dead discover a way to destroy the vampires forever. In the midst of a titanic battle, Nathan makes a desperate move that forever changes millions of lives and two worlds: the vampire world....and earth.

      5 out of 5 stars NECROSCOPE Series.......2005-08-10

I have never found a book by Brian Lumley that I have not thouroghly enjoyed, nor have I found one that I have not wanted to put down. If you choose to try his books, any of them, I recommend that if it is one of a series, that you buy the entire series. Otherwise you will regret not having the next book to pick up and start reading right away. I bought the series for my girlfriend and she felt the same way.

5 out of 5 stars OUT OF BREATH.......2004-04-25

THIS IS THE FINALE TO THE BLOOD BROTHERS TRILOGY AND WOW, ALMOST TOO MUCH TO TAKE IN.IF YOU READ THE FIRST 2 BOOKS OR ALL OF THE SERIES THEN YOU WILL LOVE THIS. LOTS OF MAYHEM AND ALMOST TOO MUCH GOING ON BUT I LOVED IT.LUMLEY'S VAMPIRES ARE FEROCIOUS. GUESS THATS WHY I LOVE IT.TONS OF SUBPLOTS AND AGAIN GREAT CHARACTERS HAD ME RE-READ THIS AT LEAST 4 TIMES.RECOMMENDED!

1 out of 5 stars Tedious and badly paced.......2004-03-30

I did my best to finish this book, but I found it tedious and unenjoyable. The plot is thin and it develops too slowly. The action scenes are poorly paced, completely unexciting to read. Most of the verbiage focuses on long exposition about the thoughts of the book's many (way too many) main characters.

The story viewpoint shifts from character to character, but not in a logical, episodic way, like in the Lord of the Rings switching from Frodo to Aragorn when each is at a stopping point. Instead it's stream of consciousness: 1) a good guy thinks about a bad guy 2) we see what the bad guy is thinking about for while, then the bad guy thinks about his henchman, 3) then we see the henchman and he thinks about his girlfriend ... etc for 800 pages.

Next time: less telling and thinking, more showing and doing.

      3 out of 5 stars Left Behind............2003-09-16

Don't ask me why, but when I was about half way thru this book I started skimming page after page. Similar story lines rehashed over and over, yet written from a slightly different character perspective to appear a little different. Lots of wordy paragraphs with no real action. It reminded me of reading the long drawn out "Left Behind" series. In defense of Lumley, he most likely felt compelled to explain the same past events over and over in every book of the series. With this being the 8th book, most of it ends up being a rerun for the faithful readers. Also trying to combine horror, science fiction, romance and spiritual themes in one book was just too much. Too many loose ends. I was bummed when finishing the first five books of the original Necroscope series, because I was left wanting more. With this trilogy I glad I done and am going to take a break from Lumley for awhile. Obvously you can't read the first two books and not this one. Just don't drop to many $$$ to complete the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly my favorite book ever...........2003-08-31

The subject says it all. Easily the best vampire novel written since Dracula, and that's a lot of books. Heck, one of the best horror novels ever written, period. The conclusion to one of the best series (really, the vampire world trilogy is a continuation of the Necroscope trilogy, so you should consider both series as one large series) of books I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and it's well worth every page. There is not one single dull, dry moment in this book. You can read it on its own...but to get the full effect, read the other books (at least the Vampire World trilogy) first. Then be prepared - this book packs one HECK of an emotional wallop!

My hat is off to Mr. Lumley. The best book, bar none, I have ever read.

2 out of 5 stars Yay, Cool Powerz!.......2003-11-22

I appreciate all the cool powers in the WoD, but this book exists solely to give big vampires big powers and show them off. Methuselah's of course exist and I won't deny they're awesome might, however the WoD has far more depth than this book presents (not asking for perfection either) and while I think it's a decent read for a different genre, the WoD is lost.

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2000-12-19

I really enjoyed reading the trilogy. I found the book to be well thoughtout and action packed. However, I think the author perpetuated many ethnic stereotypes that were unfounded. His prejudices toward particular social classes and races were evident in his writing. I hope his other books are not similar.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-07-20

For those who had never read nothing about Vampire, the Mascarade, this is a great novel to begin. It explains, just in the first pages, who and from where the cainites (o vampires) come. It has a good plot, with secrets, difficult to see, at first at last. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2000-05-15

Bloodwar is one of the best written books I've read. If you're going to read this book find a time when you're not going to be interupted. It grabs you like a snake grabs a mouse.

Excellent writing and character style. I read this one first and was happy that i wasn't completely lost as can sometimes happen. This is also my first clan novel and i found the story and history intriguing.Horror novels never give me the creeps ,but the characters were so vivid that i succumbed to the fear.

                          Book Description

Are children today growing up too soon? How do they - and their parents - feel about media portrayals of sex and personal relationships? Are the media a corrupting influence, or a potentially positive and useful resource for young people? Drawing on an extensive research project, which investigated children's interpretations of sexual content in films, TV and print media, this book considers how young people (ages 9-17) use such material to understand their experiences and build their identities; and how they and their parents respond to public concerns about these issues. The book offers a clearly-written and entertaining insight into children's and parents' perspectives on these difficult issues - perspectives that are often ignored or trivialized in public debate.

This book opened my eyes. After several years of handicapping, I became lazy. I began to look for angles and spot-plays without properly analyzing the races first. Since reading this book, I have begun to do my homework and the results have been impressive. Handicapping is hard work, BUT the results are well worth the effort. The author uses his 30+ plus years of experience to teach readers the importance of Pace, Speed, Value, Medication & Equipment, as well as Par times and Track variants.. Betting strategy and Money-management are covered too.

In addition, the author is available via email and telephone, and has a sincere interest in seeing his readers succeed.

Tanenbaum’s renowned writing style and painstaking research make this one of the most accessible and accurate books available, maintaining the author’s popular method of presenting a computer as a series of layers, each one built upon the ones below it, and understandable as a separate entity. A CD-ROM for assembly language programmers is available for teachers. For all computer professionals and engineers who need an overview or introduction to computer architecture.

I'm only 1/3 through the book so far, but it's been good. There's even a few snippits of dry humor that make it a little more interesting. As far as breadth and depth of material goes, it starts out assuming you know very little about hardware/architecture, and takes you step by step from there. Assuming the book stays as interesting and downright wooty, I'll give it 5 stars. It's not very often that I find a computer book that I'm willing to read cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Classical CS authors.......2005-10-12

Tanenbaum is one of the CS classical authors. Any CS student or instructor should own a copy of this updated edition of Structured Computer Organization.

The book structure remains the same, but there are many important updates, mainly in the examples and case studies. Tanenbaum's style is also the same: a bit arid and telegraphic, specially for newcomers, but his approach is much better for an introductory computer organization and architecture course than the books by Patterson/Hennessy (which are mandatory reading for any CS student/instructor as well).

I have basically one criticism to this book: it is very pricey! Particularly for an instructor whose wages are not paid in dollars...

This book is very vague. I found the main characteristic of Prof. Tanenbaum's book is that he likes to use abstract algebra to deliver his example. For example, in chapter 1 he talks about Languages, Levels and VM. He uses L0, L1, L2 to represent languages and M0, M1, M2 to represent virtual machine. For people already have prior knowledge of programming such as C, Java, when they read this they could easily reference to something they have already studied, but for me I still can not relate them very well. In contrast, in Randal E. Bryany & David O'Hallaron's book, the beginning of book gives out a concrete example: the C programming Language. I found the latter always work better even after took the architecture course two years later.

My point is for people who want to have clear idea of real world, you should pick another book. This book might be suitable for architecture theory(hopefully).

Ignore the other reviewers comments who are lazy and/or incapable of doing the end-chapter problems, it's amusing how many people repeated that(like parrots).
Some problems take more time and require compact understanding of concepts explained so far and some are easy, I used the book for an independent study course and it's readable, presenting a good deal of material, and includes quite funny comments in the text. I recommend it.

Andrew Tanenbaum might be the best there is when it comes to the study of computers but, unless you're a "thorough geek," you'd wish other technical writers would step into the fore.

Tanenbaum's books all use the same single technique to help students remember important ideas: bold letters. That's it. You'd be hard pressed to understand the main concepts most of the times because, like a forgetful professor, he'd sometimes mention it in passing (without bold font) that you think they weren't that important. Until one pops up in one of his chapter problems, then you're through.

He does not provide any solutions at the end of his books. One gets the sense he wrote his books for the instructors/professors who are too lazy (or uncreative) to come up with their own sample problems for the students. I wish they'd write computer science books the way mathematicians write their books: They assume their students are "mathematically-challenged" so they go that extra mile to make sure the students get the point. They provide answers to odd-number problems, for one. They also make sure the layout of their books are arranged so that students don't miss the main ideas. With Tanenbaum, you'd have to dig everywhere; you don't know whether to search in the current, previous, or the following chapters for help in answering the problems.

I still have a few more semesters of computer science; I'm almost sure all the textbooks would be written by Tanenbaum (again!). I dread the thought.

So, Tanenbaum, if you're reading this: Please, please, look for another publisher and editor who would help you in the layout of your book. And please, please, provide some answers to some of your problems for the students. At over a hundred bucks, I want my money's worth!

                          1 out of 5 stars A very frustrating book.......2003-11-07

At times this book had some interesting points to make, but it was mostly nightmare to try to learn from. I agree with all of the previous negative reviews that mentioned the book's vagueness and lack of answers to the chapter's questions! I found myself frustrated when I repeatedly read the same page over and over again. It is possibly one of the worst text-books I have ever read. I actually read this book in my class and I received terrible grades when our tests ended up being based on those end of chapter questions without answers. When I wondered how the rest of the class got good grades, it turned out because most of the class was cheating (many got caught during the final!) and getting the answers from google searches. So maybe I learned something from this book and maybe I didn't, but I would recommend against buying it unless you have to.

                            Book Description

The Design and Implementation of a Log-Structured File System presents a new technique for disk storage management. A log-structured file system writes all modifications to disk sequentially in a log-like structure, thereby speeding up both file writing and crash recovery. The log is the only structure on disk; it contains indexing information so that files can be read back from the log efficiently. In order to maintain large free areas on disk for fast writing, the log is divided into segments and a segment cleaner to compress the live information from heavily fragmented segments. This book presents a series of simulations that demonstrate the efficiency of a simple cleaning policy based on cost and benefit. The author has implemented a prototype log-structured file system called Sprite LFS; it outperforms current Unix file systems by an order of magnitude for small-file writes while matching or exceeding Unix performance for reads and large writes. Even when the overhead for cleaning is included, Sprite LFS can use 70% of the disk bandwidth for writing, whereas Unix file systems typically can use only 5--10%.
The Design and Implementation of a Log-Structured File System demonstrates how a log-structured file system can be used more efficiently than existing file systems. This new system is well suited to the technology facing the disk storage manager.
