Book Description
Here comes a new edition from one of the most popular manga series in the romantic comedy genre. Bashful college student Yusaku is madly in love with gorgeous Kyoko, the widowed manager of his apartment building, the comfortably shabby Maison Ikkoku. As Yusaku and handsome tennis coach Shun vie for Kyoko's affections, the other Maison Ikkoku residents - a motley crew of volatile personalities - can't resist meddling in their affairs.
Customer Reviews:
THESE PEOPLE DRIVE ME CRAZY.......2005-09-12
Yusaku is a college student who never seems to do good on his exams. Does he blame himself? No, he blames the apartment house he lives in, named Masion Ikkoku. More to the point, he thinks that his fellow residents are ruining his life! Akemi, the bar-maiden who likes to walk around in her see-through nightie, becomes infuriated when Mr. Yotsuya, the enigmatic man with no job, is obsessed with her and peeps on her through a hole in Yusaku's room. Mrs. Inchinose's main job seems to be getting drunk and she also likes to join in with her kid son Kentaro in running down Yusaku as a failure and calling him "Mr. Flunk-out"! He's fed up with all this and decides to move out, but just at that moment in walks the new manager, the beautiful Ms. Kyoko Otonashi, and Yusaku is a complete goner, losing his heart at first sight.
Maison Ikkoku is a brillant piece of comedy from the creator of Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi. The great thing about this series is that it appeals to an older audience. It's treatment of romantic entanglement, slapstick humor, and mature innuendo appeals to men and women readers. Takahashi's main strength here as elsewhere is the creation of appealing characters and stylish design. Never an inauthentic moment. Classic.
Funny and very sweet........2005-05-30
Maison Ikkoku is sweet. Honestly. It's not a typical romance story-- the characters are funny, the plot is flawless-- even the art is just perfect. Here is the story...
Godai Yusaku is a hopless flunk-out that lives at the run-down boarding house maison Ikkoku (hence the title of the series.)THe neighbors there are completely annoying and entirely hopeless- there's the annoying, gossipy Mrs.Ichinose and her equally annoying son, kentaro, there's the sassy, calm, and entirely sexy barhostess, Akemi, and there's also the annoying and mooching peeping tom, Mr.Yotsuya. The manager has just quit, leaving the goofy tenants to torture poor Godai over and over with their late night partying and endless gossiping. Jsut as Yusaku has decided that he's had enough, he meets the new manager, the lovely (and recently widowed) Ms.Kyoko Otonashi. Of course he falls head-over-heels in love with her, but erh love for her late husband, Sochiro, and their nosy and insane neighbors keep them from tying the knot.
Both charming and heartfelt, this series is absolutely flawless-- no Rumiko Takahashi fan should be without it in their collection.
WONDERFUL!!!!.......2004-01-26
This is quickly becoming my favorite series, the plot is excellent, the characters are wonderful (it seems like I know a few of them), and the artwork is wonderful too. This is an absolutly FLAWLESS manga. But one thing that I noticed, dosen't it seem like in all of Rumiko Takahashi's mangas that there is a character that is a dopy guy? ex: Ranma, Yusaku, Inuyasha, and that guy from Lum. I'm just saying...
Charming romantic comedy.......2003-12-11
There are generally romantic plots in Rumiko Takahashi's works, but never more so than in "Maison Ikkoku." More sedate than "Ranma 1/2," less fantastical than "Inu-Yasha," this is a straightforward romantic comedy with a hysterical cast.
Yusaku is a struggling young student in a shabby apartment, with possibly the worst neighbors in the world (a pervert, a hard-drinking gossip, and a sexy waittress). Nobody takes him seriously; his nickname is "flunk-out." He's about to storm out, claiming that nobody could study in Maison Ikkoku, when the beautiful Kyoko walks in the door, announcing that she's the new manager. Yusaku immediately is smitten with her.
Unfortunately their relationship gets off to a rough start, though Kyoko is kind and supportive of him. First his neighbor claims he's peeking into her room. Then Yusaku accidently gets into a few compromising situations with Kyoko -- and suspects that she has a boyfriend named Soichiro (which is also her dog's name). When the landlord comes to visit, Yusaku finds out who Kyoko's mystery man is, and why she still thinks about him.
Takahashi's artwork is a little rougher and smudgier here than in her later series, but closer to how people actually look. And, in keeping with that, they act very much like real people. Some of the supporting characters, in the first volume, border on caricature, but the primary people are 3-D. And while there's plenty of humor, Takahashi tugs at the heartstrings in all the right places (such as Yusaku wondering how he can ace his test without Kyoko encouraging him, or Kyoko thinking that Yusaku didn't mean it when he said he loved her).
Without Chinese curses or rampaging demons to deal with, the inhabitants of Maison Ikkoku can themselves be formidable problems. Misunderstandings, teen crushes, drunken proclaimations of love in the streets, domineering relatives and lost "perfect" spouses make it a lot harder to fall in love. You know what's got to happen, but somehow the Real World always intrudes.
Yusaku is a lovable naif. The poor guy wants desperately to tell Kyoko how he feels, but there's always something in his way -- especially his own financial shortcomings. Kyoko is a fantastic portrait of a woman who, while determined to stay faithful to her dead husband, is starting to appreciate her hapless tenant.
Those who enjoy a funny, sad, almost-squeaky-clean almost-romance (like most of Takahashi's other works) will definitely like "Maison Ikkoku." Move in and join the ruckus.
Changed my mind.......2003-12-05
Just after I posted my previous review (which I wrote before reading it in that format) I went through the book--and my god! they didn't change anything! While that may sound good, it isn't at all! The episodes that appeared in the original run still refer to Godai as a flunk-out instead of a ronin, which wouldn't be so bad if they had a least changed his situation--he still says that he's trying to pass mid-term exams, and not college entrance exams. To compound things, the four inserted episodes that appeared in Animerica Extra do say Ronin and entrance exams, and then it switches back again after them. I had to mark up my book to make the corrections that it would flow right. Horrible, lazy editing job, I must say. Shame on you Viz!
That said, the series is still very good, though there are certainly some quibbles with some other translation choices (the scene where young Kentaro should be saying "I know what it takes to make a woman happy. The most important thing a man can have is a big. . ." and gets stopped by Godai [only to find out that he was going to say "house"] isn't as funny or that sensical in its current form). Even in this form, Maison Ikkoku is a classic manga worth reading.

Good "Bathroom" Reading, But Otherwise Stale.......2007-09-11
Having grown up as the son of an insurance lawyer, I certainly have heard some weird tales from the legal profession. I have also seen my fair share of books about wacky laws and stupid things said by lawyers, judges and plaintiffs.
I was hoping this would be another funny book, but it really wasn't. Not many of the entries are funny and the author writes as if he were writing a writ. Much of the material comes from 16th century England, and doesn't translate well into modern times.
If you're looking for a good "back of the toilet" book, this is by all means good bathroom reading. It is not, however, worth the price to sit down and read.

I find this book to be interesting and entaining reading.

Book Description
This book offers the first detailed account of the popular film as it changed during the tumultous decades of Indian nationhood. The study focuses on the cinema's characteristic forms, its range of meanings and pleasures and ideological construction.
Customer Reviews:
Factually unsound. Weak undersatnding of Hindi language........1999-07-10
The problem with all Indian cultural analysts living outside India including those writing on cinema is that while they fulfill a mandatory understanding of the cultural theories in vogue at the undergraduate level in the US, Europe and Australia, they display a singular lack of sensitivity while dealing with the material at hand. Their survival, therefore, depends almost entirely on their reader's lack of knowledge of the field of study which will include amongst other things the native language, the local history as well as the local lores. On all these counts Ms Chakravarty's book is sadly lacking in a defined sincerity of purpose. There are pieces of information which cannot bear testimony - the relationship of Ali Akbar Khan with the Navketan Productions, for one. There are descriptions - such as the music composer SD Burman being described as a baul singer - which are downright ridiculous. And, of course, her command of the Hindi language is unquestionably poor! Surely the West and the East deserve a better introduction to the Indian cinema than this book.
Factually incorrect, knowledge of Hindi highly suspect!.......1999-06-28
As a student of cinema and history, I am amazed at the attention this book on the popular Indian cinema has been able to garner. The book is full of such obvious howlers as for instance the translation of BR Chopra's "Naya Daur" as not the "New Epoch" but as the "New Race". It seems that the writer has been somewhat overwhelmed by the rural tonga race included in the film. I wonder if, with that kind of understanding of the broadly "Hindustani" language, it is really possible to write the kind of seminal film and cultural study that this book is being so unabashedly advertised as by the likes of Robert Stam and the OUPs of this planet. Having gone through the book I have been able to find at least 71 similar mistakes. Just because India is far off and Hindustani an unknown quantity, one doesn't have to jump to Ms Chakravarty's defence.
FINALLY was able to find and buy this book, worth the wait!!.......1999-01-01
Anyone who is a fan of the hindi film genre must read this book. It goes in depth on how the film industry aided India gain national pride during early years of independence and how it became the national pastime. I recomend this book to Indians and NRI's alike!
Great Book for the Study of Indian Cinema.......1997-11-27
This book offers an in depth study of Indian popular cinema, concentrating mainly on films made during the 1950's and 60's after India gained nationhood. The book provides insight into how Indian cinema dramatically influenced popular culture by reinforcing values or creating new ones, and highlighting/recreating Indian history through film. The book also sheds a great deal of light on the symbolisim that is a part of all Indian films. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has a love of Indian cinema or who may want to learn more about it. A good historical analysis with many good photos.

Some good info.........2006-03-25
This book gave me some good information about places to get married. It had a little bit more "fluff" that I had to sift through to get the information, but it was useful.
VERY CONVINCING.......2005-01-02
My fiancée is a huge Vegas fan. He tries to go there once a year with the guys. He gave me this book as a joke, hoping that I might consider Vegas for our nuptials. Well, guess what? I'm thinking about it. Like most people, I think, I have always considered Las Vegas weddings a bit cheesy, but that's all in the past. As the author points out, Vegas stands for fun with glitz and glamour thrown in. Well, I probably won't get married in Vegas (although I now know where to turn for chapel-shopping), but I can certainly see why so many people visit Las
Vegas again and again.
GREAT POP CULTURE BOOK.......2004-12-16
Last March my wife and I had a renewal of vows ceremony at a Las Vegas wedding chapel with an Elvis impersonator. This book perfectly captures the fun and excitement of our experience. This book makes a perfect souvenir of the occasion. We are giving copies to all our guests who had joined us. For all pop culture buffs this is a perfect book for their personal libraries.

Few Elvis fans take their devotion to the King more seriously than Joni Mabe. She divides her life into two parts: pre- and post-Elvis's death. On August 16, 1977, Mabe realized the depth of Elvis's impact on her heart and mind, and she turned her artist's skill and eye to commemorating all that was--and is--the legend of Elvis Presley. In Everything Elvis, she acts as curator to her impressive collection of Elvis memorabilia, amassed over the past two decades. The pages are filled with images such as the official Elvis prayer rug, a wart removed from the King's foot in 1958, 8-tracks from the '70s, an Elvis car shrine, tickets to a 1976 concert, and some of Mabe's own Elvis creations. The lush color photos are accompanied by a chronology of Elvis's life after his death, making the book itself an essential piece of Elvis memorabilia.
Customer Reviews:
you won't believe how much is in it!.......2004-10-26
I came across this book kinda by mistake but I'm so glad I did. It's a little gold book with a beautiful shot of young Elvis on the cover, and the inside is even better. It covers every aspect of the King's life and beyond - from cars to Graceland, from the impersonators to the merchandise, from girls to stamps. It's obviously written by a fan but she doesn't make him a saint - she's funny, affectionate and touching in turn.
You may think you know all there is to know about Elvis but I guarantee there'll be something new in here. And if you're a new Elvis fan, this is a fantastic place to start. Go buy it.
Everything Elvis rocks! .......2004-10-22
Even if you thought you knew all there was to know about Elvis, this book is so full of information there's bound to be something new for you to discover. It's a great reference for lifelong fans, and a fantastic introduction to the King for new converts. It covers not only his life, but his influence on popular culture, the impersonators, Elvis Presley Enterprises, the merchandise, Elvis tourism - the whole phenomenon. A great little book.
The only Elvis book you'll need.......2004-09-13
This fabulous little book really lives up to its title. It tells you all about Elvis, the legend, his influence, his music and so much more, all in perfect bite-size chunks. The writer is obviously an Elvis fan but she certainly hasn't made him a saint. It's funny, affectionate, mind-blowing and moving in turn. A must for anyone who loves Elvis, loves music, or simply loves life and popular culture.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Book-BUT !!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-06
This book has the information you need for lightwave. Very informative here. However my only complaint with Lightwave books is that they are all in Black and White. I do not understand why they cannot make these books with full color gloss pages like the Maya books.I love to read computer books that have lots of graphic explainations.
Black and white books are for programmers, not artist.
Otherwise than that this book will give you what you need for lightwave
excellent book- the best book of textbook to learning lightwave........2006-07-05
The book, Inside Light Wave 8, has straightforward techniques approach to Learning LightWave Skills and Knowledge.
I was a professional Graphic Designer who wanted to move over to the 3D world, I desired to be a power-user at 3D animation. So I purchased Dan Alban's "LightWave [8]," extremely good learning tool. Dan's book got my doing just about anything I could imagine.
(In Depth book cover almost everything. Big pictures illustrations and nicely written make learn easier. Ya gotta get this one.)
This is an excellent book it is a most get. Although I got it for advanced how tos; there is beginner level help here as well. A lot of the dudes and dudettes that I've learned from through downloading Internet QuickTime movies from the Newtek website and other places, these movies are excellent show and tell ways to learn. But with expressions and certain dynamic it is good to have it in a book form as well.
Good, but inconsistencies.......2006-02-16
This is a great text for beginners in Lightwave. However, there are myriad typographic errors and there are references to keystrokes and panels that are incorrect. This content was released during the beta for Lightwave 8. As a result, there are changes in the software that are not reflected in the content.
I contacted Dan Ablan and he provided me with the correct information. It is not often that authors are so accessible. I'll be looking forward to the next edition.
Good, but with glitches..........2005-12-17
I got this great book as part of a training class that I took, and it really does provide a solid entry-intermediate level course in Lightwave. The book comes with a ton of extras on the DVD, projects, objects, scenes, textures, etc. My one complaint after working through the book for about a week is that some of the steps in the tutorials are wrong. Things like "you should have 9 polygons selected at this point..." when you really only have seven, the measurements and settings for the corvette backdrop image are off, etc. Nothing major, but it's a little frustrating when you're a newbie, and trying to wrap your head around the concepts.
Great book.......2005-10-02
This book is great for beginners. As I am a beginner, I learned a great deal with this book. There is a lot of tidbit of information in this book and a lot of good examples and tutorials to learn how to go about it. This is setup with the easier tutorials first and then it gets deeper into the program. It also starts with the basics in the beginning for those that are not familiar with Lightwave.
Another thing I like about it is that it actually shows you how to model starting with a box. Most show you how to trace and model from the tracing/and or splines.
I would definitely recommend this book for a beginner and a person that knows some about Lightwave. It has a lot of information and tips that are very useful. I still use it often and refer to it also for information.
